Pete Buttigieg’s piano, which remained in March when he sold his grand white house on South Bend’s North Shore Drive, plays a starring role in the cabaret show that South Bend Civic Theatre will stream Friday through May 30.
On your screen, you’ll see pianist Juan-Carlos Alarcon play as 21 different acts come to sing beside him in “Beautiful City: A Community Cabaret.” They croon beside large windows in the 1905 neoclassical home that the former mayor, now U.S. transportation secretary, had bought in 2009. Civic’s executive director, Aaron Nichols, was just moving into the house as its new owner when the performers set up their casual lounge-like set. With Nichols’ permission, of course. In fact, it was his idea to host it there.
