Souderton holds off CB East with 4th-quarter drive, improves to 3-0

FRANCONIA – Danny Dyches was certain about what needed to happen as the Souderton football team faced a 3rd-and-8 from the Central Bucks East 43-yard line trailing by a point in the fourth quarter. “I didn’t really get any yards the last play, but the next play I knew I had to bounce back,” the Indians senior wide receiver said. “And I knew I had to get the first down.” Hauling in a screen pass from quarterback Ben Walsh, Dyches darted inside around a pair of blockers then cut left to it down the sideline for a 21-yard gain while a late hit putting the ball on the Patriots’ 11. The Indians collected just seven more yards, requiring Rylan Zuk to connect on his third field of the second half. The second kick sent his try from 21 yards out through the uprights with 3:22 remaining to cap the 12-play, 73-yard drive and put Big Red back in the lead. “We’re used to adversity,” Dyches said. “We always know how to handle adversity so we knew what we had to do and went down the field and we scored. And that’s all that matters.” CB East’s bid for a late winning drive reached the 50 but stalled there – Hunter Smeltz’s pass breakup on 4th-and-8 securing a 23-21 victory for Souderton in Friday night’s matchup of 2-0 sides.
