View Comments More than 100 people gathered in the rain at Lee Victory Recreation Park Wednesday to celebrate the opening of the all-inclusive Freedom Playground. The playground accommodates all ages and abilities. Smyrna Mayor Mary Esther Reed thanked the community for its dedication toward the new facility. . "A true feeling of community is what made this project possible," Reed said. "Individuals and organizations in our community have always been willing to step up when they see a need." The playground is tucked behind the U.S. Marine Capt. Jeff Kuss Memorial, dedicated to the Blue Angel who died in June 2016 during a practice run for Smyrna's biennial Great Tennessee Air Show. Design of the playground gives a nod to the Blue Angels, complete with a blue and gold color scheme and a mock tail fin embossed with Kuss' No. 6.
