Blake Barrett played his 100th game for Coastal Rugby earlier this year. His father Kevin was instrumental in setting up the club 25 years ago, a milestone it will celebrate this weekend.
A secret meeting down a rural dead-end road more than 25 years ago, proved vital for rugby around the coast.
Farm life changed in the mid-1990s and the Okato, Rahotu and Opunake rugby clubs were struggling to find players. What’s worse, those available were thinking about joining old foes.
Described as clandestine, the meeting was held at Kevin Barrett’s house and players committed to join forces to form the Coastal Rugby Club in 1995.
