Print The history of the Black community in San Diego is a proud one, and Shelby Gordon has seen and experienced this pride in more ways than one. The San Diego native is the marketing manager for the San Diego History Center, which launched its new “Celebrate San Diego: Black History & Heritage” exhibit this month. It includes items like a local athlete’s participation number from the 1972 Olympics, a program from the centennial anniversary of a local church, and old copies of a community newspaper featuring stories and news about the Black community. “I think one of the interesting things about the physical collection is the utter pride Black San Diegans have in their lives and their contributions to their community,” she says.
