forming overhead i witness and saying that buildings in the vicinity shook that at the same time there was widespread destruction and it destroyed everything in the area now hundreds of people are thought to be injured we are receiving confirmation that 10 people have been injured but we are hearing from the health minister and others that that number is likely to be much higher the health minister saying a very high number of injuries and extensive damage so we are expecting any injuries could run into the hundreds they were all thoughts that people are still trapped beneath the wreckage and the emergency workers are trying their best to reach them hospitals in the area were initially put on high alert but now because of the high number of people that have been taken to nearby hospitals those hospitals are closing their doors and saying that they simply pushed to maximum capacity and we know. over at least one hospital that was itself hit with the blast now we are receiving contradictory reports as to whether or not there was a 2nd blast there's no confirmation of this and if it did happen indeed where it happened some reports suggest that it happened at the give us an idea put into context explain to us the role of hezbollah in all of this. well in recent days there has been a a flare up of tensions between hizbollah and his role so there was initially some reports that this could be an israeli strike but those were immediately shut down so if we can put that to one side the idea that his as a political player with that has your brain in connections linked to fighting against israel and that has reached the maintenance recently within lebanon itself hizbollah is an important political player and in recent years it has gained a lot of support and again a lot of momentum with more people supporting it having said that it's caused great division between the various sectors of the live in these public so where you are suggesting that his below in many ways behind this is something that people perhaps might ask but they would be cautious to say until there was some kind of investigation that was done hizbollah has supported a lot of courses within the lebanese society but there are there are sectors of the society who are against has been so that again contributes to the sectarian strife that we see within the country pull us live thank back to our breaking news a massive explosion has been seen in the lebanese capital beirut smoke is rising above the capital after a large mushroom cloud now these are live pictures from there just earlier we just saw it was night time now there as we can see as a say these are live pictures coming from there so the picture not at all clear compared to what we saw earlier where we saw huge explosions possibly 2 explosions there the aftermath and the air itself is centered around the city's port and lebanese media is reporting that the blast occurred in a far works warehouse and lebanon's health minister said that a very high number of injuries have been sustained as well as extensive damage we were talking to an eyewitness a little earlier who was 2 kilometers away from the center of the blast and he heard it and felt the blast saying that. glass was being sprayed huge vast distances from the epicenter of the explosion and we're hearing that 10 people have so far been confirmed dead but there are obviously concerns of many many more casualties this is a city already in crisis due to the pandemic the coronavirus pandemic where hospitals are already at full capacity and they are now said to be overwhelmed by casualties and it comes at a very sensitive time though for the country's status its economy very close to collapse and a lot of political tension as well so we hope to be hearing further from there we heard earlier from our correspondent paula slipper who is giving us a bit of a background into the context the political situation at the moment but i'm talking to our eyewitness earlier we know that this is a country at the moment going through severe economic crisis huge tensions and this is yet another blow. testing the resilience of the lebanese people now these are pictures showing the aftermath of an explosion which happened in the proletariat there are reports that this could have occurred in a fireworks container in the port but nobody has yet to explain or confirm exactly what caused this huge blast as you can see there on the screen captured by social media and the impact it's having there in the local port itself i'll be speaking pretty serious and you know i have to remind you also that lebanon is going through a very serious economic crisis and also we have to quote on the virus outbreak so this adds to it and the situation is becoming more and more challenging we all seeing of startling pictures images but we are not hearing anything so when it happened what did you hear even though you were 2 kilometers away yes well there were 2 explosions we heard 2 explosions now we're not sure but there was that a kind of the 1st explosion we can see from the footage that was. there that there was a 1st a fire and a small explosion and that was followed by a lodge explosion and there are reports that say that there is a is that warehouse in the number 12 warehouse in the airport that contained some fertilizer and some fireworks how this is a very early to confirm this is the only place that minute he reports that we're out so we're not sure about that so we'll have to wait until the investigation you know moves forward the important thing now is will it i should be the one that people look at hospital although the explosion took place. maybe 2 i don't know how half hours to 3 hours it's all there are still instance you've got a very very explosive social context in which this is taking place and as we've just heard you have on friday the verdict in the trial all these people accused of blowing up russia kerry and prime minister 2005 so this could be the rest terrible accident but it's the worst possible training for such a patient because there are going to be a lot of people who will say in the middle east not nice to have an accident stand him. lebanon has seen plenty of situations like this though it's a country that can cope with this sort of thing. well you have to cope with this whole train in one sense people will have to pull shows together to rushing off the dust and deal with the wounded and bury the dead the problem is that because this is a car crash a nation of crises and we've heard already the moment crisis that really has ruined the lives of 80 percent or more lebanese in the last few months you have the health crisis caused by the coded infection you have also calls refugees from syria too and you have the political interesting so. people will wonder whether not so much that lebanon will survive on the map but whether it will not all of us internally break up into the kind of factions fighting that made life a misery for people a generation such so what would be the why don't we general implications if in effect lebanon collapsed. lebanon is to some extent opposite kate wait syria for instance that the effect on the syrian government will be quite from because to some extent despite the fact that many refugees from president assad's regime live in lebanon also it's a contact with the outside world. there's the whole question how this relate to israel is really government has rushed out a statement saying it's not it's doing is denying claims between the different groups but also ramifications in the neighboring area which is not exactly stable the best of times very complicated situation internal factions as you say within the country self and i've read some of your items in the press and he explained so brilliantly. can you give us a brief idea of what is actually happening internally apart from what's happening extending the pressures on the country. you have this great economic crisis that isn't caught created by. the tensions between entire lebanese really between those who were friends of the saudis and of rich gulf states who previously put money into lebanon but in the last few months particularly with the economic crisis caused by cold in the downturn in all prices on able and willing to support lebanon so much because they say that the governing alliance between hezbollah the shiite group and the christians would interest in doing something they don't like so the road you know which has been pulled monthly platinum american sanctions on lebanon's banks that deal with syria as well as of course caused the crisis with a country that is so dependent on importing things of crude steps to always
