a shocking 270000 now leading the way is the u.s. with more than 340000 confirmed cases with reported deaths topping 10000 and recovered cases at almost 19000 and a sobering message to all americans breaks for the most difficult and the hardest week ahead as the pandemic deepens meanwhile coronavirus patients around the world are rushing to joint studies and tests for a drug for the virus then kovan 1000 continues to affect world economies and markets and oil prices as well we're going to discuss all of these developments in the next 30 minutes with our whole team of reporters there in front that rachel blevins and ben swan we'll start things off with parent over in the newsroom parents some of the it was a heart stopping morning by the u.s. surgeon general that these 2 weeks will be the most difficult for all americans take a listen. because this is going to be the hardest and the saddest week of most americans lives quite frankly this is going to be our pro harbor moment our 911 moment only it's not going to be localized it's going to be happening all over the country now over the weekend president donald trump said the u.s. bought quote a tremendous amount of hydroxy chloroquine adding there are strong signs that it can treat the corona virus but it has yet to be confirmed it's a great malaria drug it's worked unbelievably powerful drug on malaria and there are signs that it works on december strong signs i want people to live in i'm seeing people dying. and i've see people that are going to die without it. now trump added that these difficult weeks ahead could also mean the u.s. could be turning a corner trying to strike a more optimistic tone in the fight against covert 19 however doctor is that he felt she says there was only anecdotal evidence on hydroxy chloroquine and that the drug has major potential side effects especially on the heart now the surgeon general is urging those to still practice social distancing and staying home to help flatten the curve with most states issuing stay at home orders but still 8 governors have offered a variety of explanations as to why they have not followed suit and fair very is some hope right with some new predictions on how there might not be as many deaths that was originally predicted that's right so the university of washington's institute for health metrics and evaluation already had one set of numbers published april 2nd but just 3 days later those numbers were lowered drastically take a look here the 1st one originally was predicted that more than 93000 people would die from coronavirus but that number went down by nearly 11000 published again 2 days later now then the next one is as far as hospitals in i.c.u. beds it was predicted that there would be a need of almost 141000 regular hospital beds and 29000 i.c.u. beds but those numbers went down again 212-1000 around 10000 as far as ventilators many were worried about having a shortage of them will originally it was thought to have a need of more than 31000 now just under 19000 so why the sudden drop well middle of the model is based on key assumptions that all states will lock down will be on the april 30th guidelines that were put in place by the white house so while this is good news the i.h.l. me says that the more people that don't stay home or practice social distancing those numbers very well could go back up manila. there are thank you and since the outbreak of kobe 1000 scientists have been desperately searching for a treatment some now hoping the answer may be found in a drug that has shown promise when combating past versions of the corona virus artie's rachel blevins is joining me here at the news desk for more so rachel what is this drug exactly how much do we know about it so the dr that scientists are focusing on right now is the anti-viral drug does appear and it hasn't been approved by the f.d.a. yet but they are looking at it as a possible treatment for code 19 now we're seeing studies happening around the world a lot of which are being championed by the u.s. national institutes of health it's launching a massive clinical trial that will survey 440 patients 75 sites around the world who have been hospitalized with a coded 1000 diagnosis now in this randomized double blind study patients will test the impact of the entire viral drugs does appear versus a placebo now scientists are saying the hope here is that patients who are already have the virus will take the drug and then the drug will work to essentially stop the virus in its tracks take a listen. this is a. drug that is designed to screw or stop the virus from. so once the bar is going out more money more. systems. eating process now these studies are just getting started but we have already seen hundreds of patients who have said they are willing to participate and hopes that they'll find a treatment and so rachel where did run does appear come from and do we know anything about side effects so the drug was actually created to treat but scientists noted that it showed promise when looking at previous versions of the chrono virus such as mers and sars now the american biotech company sciences is now working to ramp up their production of this drug and the c.e.o. of the company actually spoke out about it and he confirmed that more than 1500000 individual doses are available for compassionate use expanded access and clinical trials and will be donated for broader distribution following any potential future regular regulatory operations now that regulatory approval and is the incredibly important part there because the drug is still considered experimental and it could be months before the f.d.a. gives its stamp of approval to any kind of drug treatment for kobe had 19 now as far as the side effects previous trials when looking at ebola patients found that this drug could increase that increase the risk of liver damage and it also found that there were other side effects such as knowledge and vomiting that have also carried over to cope in 1000 patients so there's still a lot we don't know that we could find out through future clinical trials certainly a lot of stuff still in the air lastly rachel we're hearing a lot from the trump administration on the topics of treatments i mean what more do we know about this or that or any other thing president trump has repeatedly touted the drug hydroxy chloroquine which is typically used for malaria as something that could help with the coronavirus and she essentially said it does last a briefing that americans should be able to use it because they have nothing to lose take a listen no he had to say. i want people to live and i'm seeing people dying. and i've see people that are going to die without it. and you know the expression when that's happening. they should. really do we have to we also have this medicine has been tested for many years for malaria and for lupus so it's been out there. now scientists are warning against this approach and they are noting that this drug also has side effects which include an increased risk of cardiac arrest when used on patients that have underlying conditions or who are taking other medications so they are talking about the importance of waiting for regulators to find a drug that they deem as helping with the coronavirus and they're also talking about talking to your doctor before you introduce a new medication it absolutely there's a lot of moving parts when it comes to your health so i always check with the doctor rachel thank you so much for filing that report thank you. the british prime minister boris johnson has been admitted to hospital following doctor's orders his office saying as a precautionary measure since the prime minister has had a persistent high temperature and cough meanwhile the queen has issued her 1st official statement on the virus in a televised recording where she a plot of the efforts of health care workers and urged the citizens of the u.k. to stay strong listen we should take comfort that while we may have most still to endure better days will return we will be with our friends again. we will be with our families again we will meet again. but for now i send my thanks and romish good wishes to you. all right for more on all of this well go to former u.k. m.p. george galloway i said george 1st i would like your thoughts about what's happening with the prime minister he was 1st confirmed with coded positive on march 27th he may have had it longer nobody knows for sure he has now checked into st thomas' hospital and dominic rabbit is now running the show while bojo is down pick it up from there for us george. will he's going to spend another night in hospital this is an extremely serious situation for the head of the british government in the midst of such a crisis as this to be by some reports it's been denied but by some reports in an oxygen tent receiving oxygen treatment no you plan they cannot run a country least of all in the middle of a pandemic from inside a hospital bed or still more inside on oxygen sure the system of british government is now being severely tested the picture on board a strong person is still in charge is currently still being maintained his designated sub dominic rob is a distinctly on adventure of us on the exciting dollar figure who is incapable in most people's eyes of robbing the country in a way that her majesty the queen did last night unsure you're going to ask me about the contrast between the steady calmness of the 93 year old monarch the shambles that is at the top of the british government right this moment was very marked indeed and you're right george we are going to touch on what queen elizabeth had to say we just a moment ago played out a little bit of her statement. sensually trying to keep everybody's chin up through this crisis as the u.k. nears the anticipated apex timeline similar to that of the u.s. and today the duchess of cornwall has been released from quarantine after her husband prince charles prince charles obviously the son of queen elizabeth is confirmed positive so how do you think the queen's words are being received across the nation. well there was a tour de force speakers are republican nor monarchist of any kind but 5 minutes from queen elizabeth if you'll forgive me putting it this way it was well 50 hours of donald trump the podium rumbling contradicting himself blaming people see green shoots and then drum playing on them giving endorsements to drugs that then have to be backtracked and so on 50 hours of donald trump hasn't rallied america hasn't united america but 5 minutes of queen elizabeth that a remarkable job and how the wartime feel about it and that's appropriate for this crisis she of course lived through the war and she recalled the memories of children being evacuated separated from their parents their family and so on and she ended with a lens wonderful last line we'll meet again which is a very beautiful song our job we want to look up on you tube we'll meet again was a very powerful message from the queen i must say contrasts sharply with this state of chaos are going to tell you in manila there's a stage of chaos at the top of the british government this evening nobody knows who's in charge i agree with you george on on every level there especially here on this side of the pond we are certainly a lot of people i should say are still looking for that moment of unity to arise from president trump podium that we've yet to see that lastly now. spurred by this pandemic spain is the 2nd hardest hit nation behind the u.s. with around 140000 cases so far last night the minister for economic affairs not a account beano made a public statement that the government plans to implement universal basic income now spain would become the 1st state in the e.u. to give this a go she says she expects u.b.i. to stick around beyond the crisis how do you view this move. well i'm not automatically a supporter of the system but the longer this emergency lasts the more obvious a solution at least in the short term it is it means that absolutely everyone who wherever they work or if they don't work there too ill to work gets a universal basic income. universal basic income is enough to live on there's no claiming of benefits there's no waiting for people to pay you it's a single payer if you like that payout being the state it's quite a revolutionary idea it's not one but i signed up to myself but the fact that the spanish government of gone for is going to make it the biggest experiment in u.b.i. the hours of our being in the world i think spain is. need of a rallying point and this might just be got jerry though in parenthesis minoa britain the shipping got to be worse than spain. italy just imagine well we will obviously hope for the best but we will prepare for the worst george we'll leave it right there george galloway thank you my friend. but you're. right we will be back in just a minute with a lot more news for you so tight. i'm going to fulfill repeated purposes probably to the people come on you know we will box thank you to those. in the room we really owe. the money. now you want to. know. all 5 the. big. i don't trust medical authority at all ever and the reason for that is i had this horrible auto mean just sort of growing up and it turns out it was completely alleviated with very drastic dietary measures and i went to a number of doctors to discuss what happened to me and i was basically laughed at like diet has nothing to do with our immune disorders so my suggestion to people who have health issues they can't figure out if they're going to see a medical professional and they've been going for 10 years and they're still in the same place and they should probably take it upon themselves to start testing things out testing out diet testing out exercise and try. and figure out things on their own. big questions are surrounding oil markets and oil prices today probably the biggest question though how much well oiled supplying countries actually cut prices and when right now russia and saudi arabia say they are very close to a deal to cut oil supplies so joining us from our global coronavirus update desk is investigative journalist and co-host of boom bust that's one ben good to see you so tell us what does this deal between the saudis and russia actually look like. well again as you said that they are saying they are very very close to a deal here the problem is very very close means that there is no deal so far but consider the fact that right now you have russia and saudi arabia agree in principle trying to come to an agreement to cut about $10000000.00 barrels per day from oil production supplies essentially out of that deal from what we understand russia would cut about 1000000 barrels per day in terms of production the saudis about $9000000.00 barrels per day now if that's just the saudis or if that's the rest of opec is not clear but that's at least the deal in principle right now the problem of course is that as that is taking place the 2 sides are not quite in agreement in terms of what that means for other countries and their participation as well now hold on here there's a little bit of i don't know if it's a misunderstanding or but it seems like both countries are saying i'll do it if you guys do it no you guys go 1st so how is this ever going to get accomplished. yeah well part of it is a we'll agree to do it if other countries get involved as well because remember russia and saudi arabia are not the only oil producing countries in the world so when president putin says that he sees in principle that russia can probably cut about a 1000000 barrels per day in terms of oil production he says there's a caveat to that which is that the united states has to cut production as well the problem is that the u.s. obviously is like the number one producer of energy in the world right now president trump is very proud of that but the u.s. has not agreed to do that so trump is trying to right now negotiate between the saudis and the russians to cut oil production but does not want to cut shale production of natural gas here in the u.s. and the russians are saying no no no no no if you're going to ask us to cut you've got to cut as well instead trump is threatening actually tariffs on oil imports if russia and saudi arabia don't play along ok real quick let me get this straight then president trump is playing a game of chicken with russia and the saudis and not wanting to make any moves that right. essentially that's what's happening and the saudis in response to that because however the u.s. goes so go the saudis the saudis response to that is to say well the russians are trying to create a problem between us and the u.s. by introducing shell into this and this isn't about show it's about oil look it's about energy and russia saying if you want us to cut that the u.s. has to cut the saudis say they want to cut and the u.s. says they don't want to cut so whenever one says we're very very close to a deal i take a step back and say let's see when an actual deal gets done right let's see the details fine print all right ben swan thank you for that update. thanks manila. and elsewhere around the world japan is set to declare a state of emergency in tokyo and 6 other regions as the number of infections continue to rise prime minister shinzo lobby is expected to make the announcement tomorrow japan is also set to roll out a one trillion dollar stimulus package to protect their economy. and iran is vowing to never seek help from the u.s. in its fight against the corona virus outbreak a foreign ministry spokesman rejected the possibility and accuse the us of trying to use the current situation to force iran into negotiations in the middle east iran is the worst hit by the virus and is an urgent need of medical equipment the country has about 60000 confirmed cases with 37000 reported deaths. but over in the philippines where a man was shot dead at a coronavirus checkpoint the man who was reportedly intoxicated at the time was confronted by a village official or not wearing a face mask so when response the man threatened a law enforcement using a skate he was then shot dead by a police officer so this is the 1st incident of police shooting a civilian after president roderick go to target a war and troublemakers and those defying orders that they would be shot dead. all right
