You know george is a gelding trajan hey can you read anything you can detain me on a purpose in your life do something meaningful. He did not have a fair trial at either the guilt phase or the punishment phase and what ought to happen is at the courts going to reverse everything and allow this case to start over the worst Case Scenario is that the courts are just going to look the other way. And theyre going to say yes there might have been serious error here but none of that would have made a difference and if that happens then 3 or 4 years time 5 years time ken you would be looking at execution. Thats the worst Case Scenario and thats there are people right now working in arkansas to make sure that happens. As we speak. And so what are you working on at that will think i wont i dont have time for you i dont have time. To talk about killing me. Arkansas law allowed. They could charge kenny with capital murder even though he didnt have the gun didnt pull the trigger didnt intend to kill anybody. And he had a lawyer who had 800 other clients that one year. That lawyer had 4 other capital cases the same year he never done it complicates and the kicker is he was a part time public defender. The trial was a disaster. And 11 white one africanamerican jury convicted him a couple of murder and off he went to death row imagine living in your bathroom for the week what hes done for 23 thank you all for. Micrographs friends arent slights against you know whites or men for example theres their slights against women or nonwhites so its always you know the idea is that statements that directed toward a Privileged Group are interpreted differently than a statement directed toward an oppressed group and so thats kind of the whole framework and its its a political framework thats used the result is of course focusing at least on certain kinds of minor slights and saying well rather than a north shore then we need to call attention to them but its not all slice so its very political in this country. I mean youre. Welcoming our viewers from around the world live from Central London this is our to u. K. The number of daily coronavirus dance hits a record 563 now this is the British Government is on the flop is still failing to meet its promise testing targets but Health Bosses claimed it is being ramped up. To the experts say there could be signs of a virus slowdown but if its too early to know for sure. Number 10 resists calls to release the data in full down the citron on the road concerns are going up designed to track infected patients and board all this could also be used as a form of social control. The un delivers aid to the gaza strip amid warnings that the densely populated territory could see a devastating Virus Outbreak with a Health System already ravaged by is of the israeli egyptian. Also in the south Study Reports a spike in significant levels of depression and anxiety just one day of to britains lock down we hear from professor behind the recession and ill be talking to him express in Nurses Mental Health in the late. Britain has experience its worst day for corona virus deaths with more than 500. 00 in just 24 hours thats as the government comes on the farm for its Coronavirus Testing Program as ministers admit it will still be weeks before the 25000 a day target is reached all thousands of Health Workers condemned the lack of protective equipment with some frontline staff claiming theyre threatened with the sack if they reveal the true scale of the crisis with the latest. Joins me now here in the studio so bring us up to speed them with the latest developments over. Weve been hearing from out sharma the business secretary who was updating the country when it came to the latest death figures and weve had that confirmation that the past 24 hours have been the worst so far for the u. K. In terms of deaths with regard to 19 a rise of 563. 00 deaths over that period taking the total 22522350 people who have died as a result all after having tested positive for cocaine 1000 its not clear yet how many of those have died as a result of cold 9000 directly and how many have had the virus contribute to preexisting problems in any case that is a rise in the number the largest rise thus far we also saw during that press conference an update when it comes to the testing figures and how many tests are going to be conducted by the government by Senior Public Health of england official on the oil. The number of tests undertaken in the n. H. S. Public health in an combined Testing Capacity is it just increasing at the moment so that will be a relatively small number but there is capacity for example stay for almost 3000 and that will increase as we get to 25000 capacity but the important capacity is in the 2nd strand where we will have 5 and have 5 centers where people can drive through and get their testing done in order of priority and it has chief executives are identifying the priority and the intention here is to get from posen is to hundreds of thousands within the coming weeks now we know the government have said that theyre aiming to reach 10000 tests day they did reach that figure yesterday having tested 10000 people perhaps aided by the new centers set up in ikea in north london where nature staff were being tested so they are meeting that target however the government have said that they hope within the next fortnight to Start Testing up to 25000 people a day and weve been hearing from the housing secretary robert general who said that the general environment has been really challenging for the government but. We do need to ramp up production very significantly it isnt easy to get your test in a global condone because theres a great deal of demand. Now as mr jenner mentioned the Global Demand for those testing kits has meant it difficult for and made it difficult for the British Government to source however there were those who say the government had months to prepare they knew way ahead of time after seeing what was happening in china that this crisis was going to come in they should have prepared then in any case comparisons have been made between the United Kingdom and for example germany where up to 70000. 00 people are being tested daily and so there are those including former director of the World Health Organization Anthony Costello who says that the reason the u. K. Hasnt been able to do the sufficient amount of testing is that it simply failed to organize itself properly and he said what about the n. H. S. How are staff coping at the moment but weve seen n. H. S. Staff repeatedly stressing and complaining that they havent received enough personal protective equipment p p d and weve seen a letter being written to the Prime Minister by an Umbrella Group called every doctor its been signed by 10000 n. H. S. Workers and they call on the government it hits who World Health Organization guidelines and provide workers with medical masks i protection clean scrubs and so on and say that due to a lack of equipment n. H. S. Staff are dying now n. H. S. Staff have responded all the n. H. S. Themselves have responded and said that they welcome any concerns that their stuff raised and that they support them in the process of doing just that. Once a Major Incident occurs it is vital that the public receive fast authoritative open clear and consistent information from there and h. S. Which is why in line with longstanding Emergency Preparedness resilience and response protocols official communications are therefore always coordinated nationally staff continued to speak in a personal trade union or professional body capacity and this is selfevident from print and broadcast Media Coverage throughout this incident that staff are able and do in fact speak freely our staff have been speaking freely but the question as to whether the n. H. S. Has supported them in that remains to be seen because there are many n. H. S. Staff and workers have come out and said that theyve been told and threatened should they go public with their concern that that essentially would be the end of their careers and they could lose their jobs so many questions there for the National Health service and its Senior Management swanson he said thank you very much indeed for that detailed update it comes as government officials cautiously claim britain is showing early signs of a slowdown in the spread of the virus is the n. H. S. Chief Steven Powers said that while were not through the worst of it yet there are signs of recovery is in the number of u. K. Cases but recently there is a little bit of a plateau i think its really important not to read too much into this because its early days were not out of the woods were very much in the woods and its really important that we keep complying with those instructions. Downing street top epidemiologist professor Neil Ferguson also admitted there may be some evidence to suggest that lockdown measures are working however he also stressed that it is too early to know what effect this will have on the death rate but experts also caution against over interpret the figures the infection rate could be an underestimate given the lack of testing and the death rate could be an overestimate as it indicates all deaths occurring with the virus not sold the jute to the virus. Every dimeola just were University Dr mike tilsley agrees that its still early days. Theres a lot of what seems to be conflicting information coming out at the moment i think it is true that the maybe some promising signs in the might be a slight drop in the number of hospital admissions thats happened over the last couple of days what i would say is were still in the relatively early days in the u. K. Is seeing the impact of the most severe social distancing message that came in a week ago and yet theres a certain lack time because when someone gets infected they may not show symptoms for up to a week or even 2 weeks later so a lot of the cases with still seeing reported will have been infected prior to the introduction of these measures so there are similarly signs in the data that we may be starting to see a slowdown but we probably really wont be able to towel for maybe a couple of weeks time whether we really are starting to plateau in stating a drop or experience of modeling this type of that the damage what youre seeing is that the bang conventional thinking. I know what i will say is that no epidemic is like the one before so theres always going to be slight differences because every to say that comes is going to have slightly different transmission characteristics its going to have a slightly different death right slightly different sort of infection time and so forth but broadly speaking the way that an epidemic the high it behaves in the same sort of way that you get an increase in cases the initially looks like its exponentially growing and can be quite worrying of course for lots of people and then well start to see tailing off and plateau ing before starting to decline the real uncertainty actually comes when we get into this declining phase because its not automatically clear that of course it will decline and then it will die out you can possibly get a sort of an infection tile that can carry on for a certain length of time and a lot of the things we need to think about when we get beyond that a is how to manage that and how to put in measures to enable us to sort of get out of these most of a lockdown procedures as quickly and as efficiently. Its possible yes i just on that point do you anticipate the lockdown measures could be eased in the near future and when i say that in time for mid summer perhaps i may she said this is a really really difficult question to ask and so i will say one of the key things will be looking at sort of woman 2 weeks time whether the really is evidence of a reduction in the daily number of cases and that will give us a real indication as to whether people are complying. The government is under pressure to release the data that justified last weeks lockdown prior to the announcement number 10 said reported public interruptions informed the decision but opposition leaders want more transparency weve handed over extraordinary powers to the government for obvious and good reason but its important that the government is clear and transparent about how and why those powers are being used it would be better if the government is as transparent as possible the data should be published the government is yet to respond to the request but says it received information from a range of sources all compliant with current data regulations number 10 also said it would publish data when legally possible and if it helped the public to better understand the threat. Where its possible to publish data and where we think doing so will give the public a better understanding of the threats of the virus when we are committed to doing so. But the concern over days of privacy comes as the government plans to release an app that would inform the public all the nearby virus carrier has developed by n. H. S. England innovation on it works by using shortwave signals to detect nearby phones in your area those who have tested positive can tell the up which then informs those nearby to protect the infected uses identity these alerts would also be delayed but at the heart of the population needs to use the app to be effective the data wont be stored by a central system which crashes hope will allay fears about previously and hacking but an open letter from experts of the government is also on the technology could be used for nefarious purposes any Technology Initiatives put in place now to suppress coronavirus must protect human rights be proportionate and work within the rule of law not least because they will set the template for what comes next in the delivery of Health Services in the u. K. The combination of this new coronavirus bill with existing far reaching data gathering powers creates the risk that location and Contact Tracking Technology could be used as a means of social control still to come this hour the u. N. Sends more than 4000. 00 food parcels in a single day to palestinians in gaza and the us is Health Ministry declares it needs 20000000. 00 to fight the outbreak. But also Study Reveals the number of people who are 40 depression and anxiety spikes a day after the coronavirus lock down were joined by the professor behind the research and an expert in Mental Health all the front line and i just thought. The world is driven by a dream shaped by. The day or thinks. We dare to ask. Theyre just taking over all the alternative all critic taking and killing because i say the stage show the water pump cold real choices binary choice and only choices if you say her elbow are available and both binary thing is not a chance for the states to slow to provide a new architecture revive the quartet and start negotiations with. Israel if they dont invited to negotiate them by to think about whats being put on the table. From. The un has the over 4000 paul sills in the single day to help palestinians on the gaza strip amid fears the territory could experience a catastrophic help break off coronavirus says hamas has Health Ministry says it needs 20000000. 00 to fight the virus while building new facilities to stop the fragile Health System collapsing. Is in tel aviv. Well when youre talking about gaza you need to realize that were talking about one of the most densely Populated Areas on earth there are 2000000 people here who live in the space of 140 square miles so any kind of virus any kind of pandemic is going to ultimately run the risk of becoming a catastrophe as you mention the United Nations relief and works agency has been distributing food parcels it also talks about the being not enough testing equipment in the strip and in this respect israel is trying to bring in some equipment and testing tests so that people can conduct what is needed to happen inside the strip now we have in terms of figures up to 12 people who are confirmed dead but that figure is unfortunately expected to escalate this is a shortage of facilities and in this respect too large facilities are being built and 18 facilities are being converted into clinics at the same time the Health Ministry has said that it needs some 20000000. 00 in this respect the ta has offered to give 150000000. 00 in aid to try and help ease the situation in the gaza strip the situation is made that much worse by the seas that has been imposed by israel for the better part of 14 years so that siege has seen a much needed basic supplies been able to enter the gaza strip at the same time a harsher rules are being implemented rules that are preventing people from gathering in large crowds and rules that are also stopping Street Vendors and any kind of street markets from happening now across the border in israel where i am on wednesday we saw the highest wise in the number of people testing positive for covered 19 in this respect there are more than 5500 israelis who have tested positive the chief of staff is under quarantine and you have 21. 00 israelis who have died the unemployment figure also stands at one in 4 now this is a figure that is the highest that this country has ever witnessed and it came into effect just in the last 23 weeks when you have all the drama and all the lockdown khurana vi. As i spent the better part of today in measure of him it is one of the neighborhoods for the ultra orthodox religious jews and these are the areas that are the worst hit in the hospitals 40 to 60 percent of patients come from the ultraorthodox jewish communities and this is because these communities are not here into the lockdown just on sunday there was a funeral with more than 400 people they continue to flout the rules and gather for prayer meetings for weddings for funerals i was with there on patrol with the police and we were pelted with stones and eggs in the ultraorthodox screaming at the police to leave the neighborhood but the police of course insisting that theyre going to stay there and try and bring these and to coronavirus orders into place as the country sat up its efforts to try and deal with this point and pandemic humanitarian campaign im a talker and told me earlier that people need to consider the Mental Health of those living in an area that has been under siege. In order to protect a population that is in such a densely populated area where medical facilities also sparse and so difficult to get into it is more than just ensuring that the right test strips are there and i do you units are present group that has no cure or vaccine so the only way to support a patient is by a jury good idea of the citys gulzar just does not have that but beyond that it protecting it is not the physical well being of the person only as a board and as that is the Mental Health of those individuals who lived under siege for 14 years in such a tightly closed space that is regularly bombed is something that is your belief so karuna in goals that doesnt go on the back a very strong Public Infrastructure really moving vehicle and an economy that is able to withstand it it comes on the back of so shortages Living Conditions and this could very very easily escalate and they are preparing with to quarantine. Is it is an 18 additional facilities or is that not enough. I dont believe it is at all because quarantine will only stop. Additional people coming into the facility into the gaza strip where you already have individuals that are living in a multigenerational found millys very very tight building accommodations this could this could be dissolved stress and forcing any kurds you. See and having people isolated which is been a very effective measure going to other places is just bought a luxury that gazans have. The number of people reporting significant levels depression and anxiety spiked a day after the Prime Minister announced the coronavirus Lockdown Research carried out by the universitys sheffield and ulster highlighted that on tuesday the 24th of march a day after the announcement of lock down 38 percent of participants reported significant depression and 36 percent had anxiety in comparison the day before that lock down just 16 percent reported that same depression while 17 percent anxiety or rates of both also remained hider in the following week with just over 20 percent reporting depression and anxiety to the study also found that those aged under 35. 00 live in a city with low incomes and with Health Conditions reporting higher rates of anxiety depression those whose income has been hit by the outbreak were particularly at risk but i was joined by the expert behind the Research Professor richard bent all he told me that there are different possibilities why it may have happened. We we we were bit surprised to see that spike the figures you referred to of a number of people who responded to the survey on those particular days who were part of what we were to recognize thresholds for exhaustion depression levels which would normally suggest the need for some kind of help of some sort so yes now we were a bit surprised and obviously reversed different possibilities what may have happened well no question is fewer people responded on tuesday than on the other days and we think thats possibly because people were trying to make sense of the lockdown and decide what to do about it and were bit too busy to fill in surveys that said we have checked so that isnt that didnt seem to be a greater proponents of people with past Mental Health difficulties because we did ask about that. Although it does seem that people with previous mental out difficulties appeared to be particularly affected your point to make is that is that this spike only lasted for a day in a way its not because the question as opposed to measure is personal i asked people about a standard questionnaire which was used in services sort of supposed to measure symptoms over a week you said i guess people responded just a according to have they were me feeling at that moment. Or for more on this im not joined by an expert in nursing and Mental Health Jennifer Hawkins jennifer hello thank you for joining us and good evening its one thing for those cooped up at home to have that Mental Health impact but tell us about the front line. Well its not just nurses its all Health Care Workers and that includes 1st responders and carers in the Community Many are experiencing the same manic diet say and theyre overwhelmed by whats happening and i think the physical and mental to mounds of long shifts and excessive were let out of fear of catching the fire s. Specially difficult for Health Care Workers at this time and talk. Fear of catching the virus of course we are reporting as so many others are the lack of protective kit that can be helpful for keeping people in the good placement to me no no it doesnt and i think theres also this worry about what what are you going to be going into what the Staffing Levels going to be like because while weve had reports of frustration and anxiety in relation to lack of protective equipment but thats not the only issue being raised by our staff there are many of the staff that are already or 6 or the work load is high and there is course a lack of beds which is adding to the frustration of people caring for these Little People because we have huge admiration for doctors and nurses who are trained to deal with traumatic situations but this kind of pandemic its something very different it is something very different i mean an organization thats helped the Health Care Workers with their Mental Health we have long been campaigning for 24 how our Mental Health helpline dedicated to supporting Health Care Workers because of the kind of work they do to service has. Been in need of this for a very long time so thats interesting that Mental Health of nurses and doctors care work is not just forgotten in a crisis like this but actually has been forgotten altogether it has yes and thats because theyve been under increased demands in their work and in fact the recent research that came out not so long ago its nurses were one of the highest percentages of population for suicide. So what more then should we be seeing from the government what can it do well the government has to be fair given 5000000 in funding to some Mental Health charities including mine to provide services to people struggling with Mental Health but once again we need something just solely for Health Care Workers that dedicate it to them knowing what the current of work history by and not should be out in 24 hours a day and 7 days a week this is for all Health Care Workers including doctors the helpline nates be manned by clinical staff so they are signposted says to the correct support and you know on some fast track counselling for people they need to how it could just very briefly what are you doing that is your charity at a time like this how are you able to help well which were seeing an increased amount of traffic and we are all volunteers we take the cools off of workers on the emails and on the telephone and what were actually doing at the moment is sign post an end to the appropriate charities and giving them some advice on how they can help. Jennifer thank you very much indeed for joining us here on the u. K. Really appreciate your time good luck with all your doing thank you. And finally over the long term means britons are spending a lot of time at home as per the government advice to stop the virus spreading its got to be business as usual for key workers including us journalists bring you all the latest information on take a shot it was dusty takes a look behind the scenes at the precautions we are taking here. Are you running to get too close to the biggest story in town in fact the only story in town is of course the Coronavirus Crisis with breaking news its organized chaos and it is in the driving seat jen is working flat out and correspondents like me in the deep end but with this story is simply cant be like that the government advice is to stay at home in order to stop the spread and anyone that can work from home at all t.
