Royall House and Slave Quarters Awarded Cummings Grant COURTESY OF ROYALL HOUSE AND SLAVE QUARTERS The Royall House and Slave Quarters is one of 140 local nonprofits to receive grants through Cummings Foundation’s $25 Million Grant Program. The Medford-based organization was chosen from a total of 590 applicants during a competitive review process, and will receive $250,000 over 10 years. The Royall House and Slave Quarters function as a site of memory. As the only known remaining free standing quarters where enslaved people lived and worked in the North, the museum bears witness to their lives, to the intertwined stories of wealth and bondage in pre-Revolutionary Massachusetts, and to the resistance of enslaved people.
