Romania's 2020 beer sales volume flattish, brewers invest 72.8 mln euro

BUCHAREST (Romania), April 7 (SeeNews) - Romania's beer market was flattish in terms of volume in 2020 with sales of 16.5 million hectolitres, up a mere 0.5% year-on-year, the Brewers of Romania Association said.
During 2020, only one in twelve beers was sold in entertainment, hospitality and restaurant (HoReCa) units due to restrictions on gathering at public places imposed to limit the spread of the coronavirus infection, the association said in a statement on Tuesday.
Before the pandemic, one in five glasses or bottles of beer was sold in HoReCa units.
"Restrictions imposed due to the situation generated by the coronavirus have strongly affected the hospitality sector and, implicitly, our industry. Losses caused by the closure of HoReCa units were partially offset by retail purchases, as people started to consume beer home, and by the fact that 2020 was a year with good weather," Brewers of Romania president Dragos Constantinescu said.
