There were contested races for Select Board, School Committee, Municipal Light Board, Board of Library Trustees and Town Meeting. The polls closed at 8 p.m. Voters also had the option to cast a ballot by mail thanks to expanded rules that allowed any person taking precautions related to COVID-19 to qualify for absentee voting by reason of physical disability. Small business owner Christopher Haley, a newcomer to the political scene in Reading, unseated incumbent Vanessa Alvarado for a three-year seat on the Select Board.
