Raising the age of juvenile jurisdiction will improve odds of rehabilitation

As a longtime Fall River resident, and current social work student at Bridgewater University, I am compelled to alert the community to an important policy issue. Raising the juvenile jurisdiction age provides youth offenders with the best treatment possible for rehabilitation. Although youth offenders should be held accountable for their crimes, the consequences should remain within the juvenile system if we are to rehabilitate them.
The Department of Youth Services is committed to improving outcomes of children via services and programs and should invest energy and resources to promote raising the age of juvenile jurisdictions. Senator Joseph A. Boncore and Representatives James J. O’Day and Kay Khan have worked tirelessly to extend treatment opportunities to youth offenders by raising the age of juvenile jurisdictions through Bill H.3420. However, attention to this bill is lacking due to the time that has lapsed since the original filing.
