The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday ordered notice to the Centre and the State in a public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to the authorities concerned to collect and dispose of ‘ghost nets’ (fishing nets lost or abandoned at sea) from the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice M.M. Sundresh ordered notice in the public interest litigation petition filed by K. Pushpavanam of Madurai. The petitioner complained that the ghost nets were responsible for trapping and killing millions of marine animals every year.
