GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is struggling with twin problems — rise in daily waste output and a severe manpower crunch. As per the latest data, waste produced in the city — home to about 10 lakh people — is almost 450 tonnes a day. More than 50% of cleaners’ posts are vacant. “The sanctioned posts for cleaners are 1,440, while the current number if just about 600. So, over 800 posts are vacant. To cover a city like Guwahati with this kind of manpower is heavily challenging,” a senior GMC official said. Ninety NGOs, which have been given contracts by the GMC, collect garbage from door-to-door and dump it at the Boragaon dumping site, while regular employees clean roads and public places.
