"We're turning it back into a full-fledged gym," said Michael Johnson, Director of Community Development Block Grants and State Housing Incentives Program for the county and Panama City. The improvements will also include expanding the half-court gym to full-court, serving the public and competition basketball as well, Johnson said. The project is currently in the proposal phase, which closes at the end of the month. However, the gym is expected to be ready for use sometime in May, by the start of summer vacation. With the severe damage and functional loss of the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center caused by Hurricane Michael, the renovated Village gym will serve as another line of support for the recreational needs of the Glenwood area as the future of the MLK rec center is being realized.
