Mountain Scene By TRACEY ROXBURGH Coronet Peak finally managed to get punters on the hill yesterday after this week’s polar blast delivered enough white gold to get the Queenstown skifield across the line. Originally scheduled to open on June 19, Coronet’s been plagued by one of the warmest Junes in recent memory, hampering attempts to make snow, or keep it. But when the Arctic blast arrived this week, the snowguns fired up, and they’ve been been blasting out 320 litres a second since. The arrival of 25cm of wind-affected snow earlier this week was the finishing touch. Ski area manager Nigel Kerr says about 1300 got their fix yesterday, with the Coronet Express and Meadows chairlifts running, along with the conveyor carpets on beginner slopes.
