Today in 1892, the General Electric Company was formed—otherwise known by its acronym, GE. Since then, it’s been an American standard, not to mention a so-called blue-chip stock. It all started with Thomas Edison, whose research was funded by Drexel, Morgan & Co., a company founded by J.P. Morgan and Anthony J. Drexel and whose separate companies could be merged under one corporation called Edison General Electric Company.
