New Newton senior center costs $2.5M less than renovation

Wicked Local
A new senior center will be built in Newtonville for $2.5 million less than renovating the current building if the city follows recommendations put forth by the Newton Center for Active Living (NewCAL) Working Group.
Josh Morse, commissioner of public buildings, during a Zoom meeting this week, updated city councilors that many stakeholders – including the Design Review Committee, Council on Aging, Commission on Disability, community members, neighborhood businesses, current senior center patrons, and others – supported new construction over renovating the old, historic building at 345 Walnut St.
In a straw vote, the councilors present at the meeting also favored a new facility.
