Your Email Address Share Updated: 3:45 PM MDT Aug 4, 2021 New Mexico United and the Somos Unidos Foundation have announced the signings of Yoely Tafoya and Miles Merritt to its Academy roster.Tafoya is a midfielder from Sandia High School and was the top goal-scorer for the Matadors as a freshman. The 18-year-old has played club soccer with Rio Rapids and Zia Youth Soccer League.“Yoely has shown a dedication to learning and developing his game,” said New Mexico United Academy head coach, Paul Leese. “He possesses great close control which allows him to be dangerous in attacking areas, and he can also create opportunities for his teammates.”Merritt is a midfielder from Sandia Prep and won a State Championship with the Sundevils. The 17-year-old has played club soccer with Rio Rapids and New Mexico Soccer Academy.“Miles is an intelligent, hard-working midfielder with skill to match,” Leese said. “We are already seeing his impressive talent, work ethic and leadership qualities in training, and we are excited to see him compete in match play. He is an exciting addition to our team.”All players in New Mexico United's Academy are awarded a full scholarship into the program. They include registration, travel, equipment and coaching costs. The scholarships are made possible through the Somos Unidos Foundation.
