New Mexico Democrats Plan Cannabis Legalization Proposal The state’s 60-day legislative session starts Jan. 19, and adult-use legalization is one of the legislature’s top priorities. New Mexico’s Democrats are planning a cannabis legalization proposal as the state’s 60-day legislative session kicks off Jan. 19, according to a KOAT report. Although the legislature has failed to pass adult-use legalization bills the past two years, voters did not reelect some more conservative Democrats who opposed the issue in the 2020 election, and lawmakers now see a path forward for policy reform efforts, KOAT reported. Rep. Javier Martinez is leading the effort to legalize cannabis this year, and told the news outlet, “I think we're going to make this a very good bill and I think we're going to pass it.”
