BACOLOD CITY - The Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Negros Occidental is taking measures to address the 282 percent increase in local dengue cases as of the third week of May. Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Tuesday the figures can be considered "alarming," but he noted the rise in cases is part of a three-year cycle of a surge in the number of the mosquito-borne disease. "Our PHO is aware of the situation and taking remedial measures, mostly reminding people to keep our surroundings clean," he added. Latest data from the Department of Health-Western Visayas (DOH-6) show Negros Occidental continues to have the highest number of newly reported cases in the region, with 96, based on the Morbidity Week No. 20 updates. The new cases indicate an increase of 282 percent during the week covering May 15 to 21 this year compared to the cases logged for the same period last year. During the period January 1 to May 21, 2022, Negros Occidental recorded a total of 657 cases, including five deaths. Lacson said Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, provincial health officer, explained to him that a surge in dengue cases happens every three years, and the last time there was a sharp increase in cases was in 2019. "The instruction is still the same, "Clean your surroundings." Don't allow stagnant water to remain in your area," he added. In this capital city, dengue cases also increased by 72.5 percent as of the third week of May. Data from the City Health Office (CHO) showed some 138 cases, including four fatalities, were reported since January 1, from only 80 with two deaths during the same period in 2021. Dr. Grace Tan, chief of the CHO Environment Sanitation Division, had earlier said they are sustaining the campaign to combat dengue by encouraging the barangays to do the enhanced "4S". "4S" stands for "Search and destroy" mosquito breeding sites; "Secure self-protection measures" like wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts, and daily use of mosquito repellent; "Seek early consultation"; and "Support fogging/spraying."
