Being taken care of. And it really is its unamerican, it really is. People are scared to death. People know their lives are at stake, all that theyve worked for, all that they own, all that they value. President
Joe Biden Yesterday
addressing misinformation on
Helene Recovery
efforts spread by
Donald Trump
and his allies. And that comes as
Hurricane Milton
is gaining strengthen in the gulf and expected to make landfall in the next 24 hours. Well have the latest
Storm Track
and a live report from florida straight ahead. Plus, a new book by longtime journalist,
Bob Woodward
, is putting
Donald Trump
s relationship with russian president vladimir putin back in the spotlight. And meanwhile,
Vice President
Kamala Harris
continues her media blitz, making more high profile appearances with now less than four weeks until election day. Good
Morning And Welcome
to way too early on this wednesday, october 9th. We are now 27 days until the president ial election. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us. We have a lot to get to this this morning, and we begin with the latest out of florida where
Hurricane Milton
has once again strengthened into a category 4 storm. Milton is expected to make landfall late tonight or early
Thursday Morning
with forecasters warning it could be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record. Right now preparations and evacuations are currently under way as residents scramble to flee, triggering massive
Traffic Jams
and fuel shortages. Officials say that the very dangerous and massive milton appears to be headed for tampa, where the
Storm Surge
could reach up to 15 feet of water, causing major flooding, rainfall, and damaging winds. Joining us now live from
Fort Myers
, florida, just down the coast is nbcs
Jay Gray
. Jay, good to see you. Give us a sense of the scene there. What sort of preparations are under way . Yeah, jonathan, what weve seen the last couple of days is people sandbagging, boarding up for the
Monster Storm
heading this way that, unfortunately, seems to be growing in intensity and overall wind field. This footprint of the storm is growing as it moves toward the coastline here, and its a situation where weve now run out of days, were down to hours and that time to prepare, that time to get ready just about over at this point especially if you want to move to higher ground as things start to get dicy through the day today, and as you talk about once this storm makes landfall, it is going to be really a record with driving rain, and
Winds Gusting
right now upwards of 200 miles an hour as part of this storm, and its making its way towards the coast as we talk about it, and folks here i talked to somebody who left their home, moved to higher ground telling me these are the toughest times right now waiting, watching to see where this storm will strike and what it might leave behind. Jay, you of course, have covered dozens of storms over the years, and give us your perspective how this one feels and watching approach on the radar and such a massive storm and just also the toll it takes on residents going through this yet again. Yeah, look, this is one that ramped up very quickly and went from just a tropical storm to a
Category 5
hurricane in a matter of maybe a day and a half we saw it increase by 100 miles an hour, the winds with this storm with less than 24 hours. And so it certainly got the attention of everyone here including our team, and its amazing to see just how strong, how defined this storm is. And thats whats concerning, a very small eye in this storm and a growing wind field. Its definitely different than most of the storms you see. This is one of those storms that is on pace to be a historic storm, and thats frightening if youre along the coast especially if you call the area where this storm is going to strike home. So a lot of people very concerned, and you talked about it. This is an area that understands storms and understands this one is different. Helene just a couple of weeks ago still dealing with that and dealing with piles of debris that are still out and could become projectiles as this storm moves onshore. But also two years ago, and
Ian Ian
ravaged this region. Its a storm that tore apart so many homes, businesses. And theyre still rebuilding from that two years ago. So there is a sense of fatigue from the storms here. There is a real sense of why over and over again does our area see this type of storm and a lot of frustration for a lot of people who are now concerned about what comes next. Nbcs
Jay Gray
live for us from
Fort Myers
, florida, thank you. Of course well have live reports on the region throughout the day here on msnbc. President
Joe Biden
has postponed a trip abroad in order to, instead, oversee the response to that hurricane. The president was supposed to travel tomorrow to germany and then onto onto angola. The
President Yesterday
urged floridians to follow
Evacuation Orders
and says hes been in contact with florida governor ron desantis. You all have been reporting on the highways, shoulders being open, everybody heading out. And if youre
Evacuation Orders
, you should evacuate now. Now, now, now. You should have already evacuated. Its a matter of life and death. And thats not hyperbole. Its a matter of life and death. Last night i spoke again to
Governor Desantis
and caster i made it clear to them they should reach out directly to me with anything else they may need as this storm hits. I gave them my personal number to contact me in the
White House
. The governor of florida has been cooperative. He said hes gotten all he needs. I talked to him again yesterday. I said, no, youre doing a great job, all being done well. We thank you for it, and i really gave my personal
Phone Number
to call. So i dont know, there was a rough start in some places, but every governor every governor from florida to
North Carolina
has been fully cooperative and supportive and acknowledged what this team is doing and are doing an incredible job. Weve got a lot more to do. The president s trip likely to be rescheduled with germany by
The End
of the month. Meanwhile, the former president continues to lie about the federal responses to
Hurricanes Milton
and helene. In a post on social media yesterday, trump called the response to helene the worst in u. S. History. Meanwhile, in a
Wall Street Journal
oped published yesterday, trumps running mate, ohio senator j. D. Vance continued to run with a lie started by
Trump Last
week. Writing this, under ms. Harris and mr. Biden, fema has funneled millions of dollars to nongovernmental organizations whose stated goal is facilitating
Mass Migration
into the united states. Of course, none of that is true. Although, it is
Something Trump
did as a president right in the middle of
Hurricane Season
back in 2019. Meanwhile, while campaigning on
Trumps Behalf
in
Arizona Yesterday Majority
leader
Steve Scalise
also pushed that lie. Lets take a look at that and then the response from
Vice President
Harris Yesterday
to the misinformation being spread by trump and his allies. Fema among a whole bunch of other federal agencies have been using your
Tax Dollars
that is supposed to help you as a american citizens, if you get some kind of disaster and every community gets them. They use that money helping illegals here that they brought into america to get
Hotel Rooms
that theyre destroying, free cellphones, food, shelter, all of those things. And then when an american needs help from their federal government, they say, oh, were spread too thin or were out of money. Its profound, and it is the height of irresponsibility, and frankly, callousness. So lives are literally at stake right now, and the
Idea Somebody
would be playing political games for the sake of himself, but this is so consistent about
Donald Trump
. He puts himself before the needs of others. I fear he really lacks empathy on a very basic level to care about the suffering of other people and understand the role of a leader is not to beat people down, its to lift people up especially in a time of crisis. Still ahead here,
Vice President
harris goes on a media blitz, sitting down for three separate interviews yesterday. Well take a look at what she had to say during those stops. Plus, were going to dig into some of the revelations from
Bob Woodward
s upcoming book that reveals behind the scenes conversations with trump,
Joe Biden
and more. Those stories and a check on the forecast when we come right back. K on the forecast when we come right back pete g. Writes, my tween wants a new phone. How do i not break the bank . He spends fulltime perpetuating lies and misinformation. He spends full time talking about fictional characters, you know. A lot of namecalling. He doesnt talk about your childs names, he talks about his names. People are ready for a new generation of leadership thats about fixing problems. Meteorologist Michelle Grossman for the very latest on the path of
Hurricane Milton. What can you tell us . Jonathan, still look at a catastrophic storm that will make landfall in the next 24 hours along the west
Central Coast of florida. Looking at winds 160 miles per hour, a
Category 5 storm. It ramped up once again to that category yesterday evening, and were expecting a major hurricane as it makes landfall some time very early
Thursday Morning. So right now the location 300
Miles Southwest of tampa, florida. Its moving quicker than it was yesterday. To the
North East at 14 miles per hour, and this is the path, the latest path of what we expect. As we go throughout time here, expect it to keep that strengthen as we go throughout wednesday and making
Landfall Early
Thursday Morning as a category 3, category 4 storm. We are looking at that chance for life threatening
Storm Surge, a threat to life and property, also very heavy rainfall, up to 18 inches in some spots, and catastrophic winds. Winds gusting over 100 miles per hour. Thats going to bring
Power Outages for weeks. Now, as we look at tropical alerts, notice they extend from the carolinas to the state of florida, also the bahamas. We have a
Hurricane Warning for orlando, tampa,
Fort Pierce and
Fort Myers, and were going to see a
Storm Surge. Thats going to be the biggest impact and historical storm as we go throughout the next 24 hours. A 10 to 15foot
Storm Surge. That is unsurvivable where you see the purple there including portions of of central florida, sarasota, tampa, also looking at very high
Storm Surge in
Fort Myers, also marco island. And were going see
Flooding Impacts as well. Flash flooding, streams and rivers will be swollen. The ground is saturated already so life threatening and catastrophic
Flash Flooding is expected, up to 18 inches in some spots. And were going to see rain across the state of florida. And were also looking at those winds. This will be a major impact because those grounds are so set. Stow
Hurricane Force
Winds Gusting from ghost to coast. And jonathan, were going to see widespread
Power Outages not just days but were talking weeks. This is going to be a story to to watch over the next 24 hours, certainly one for the record books and the cleanup afterwards. And anyone in the
Storms Path again please listen to local officials. If there are orders to evacuate, please do so. And we, of course, will stay all over the storm in the days ahead. Michelle grossman, thank you so much. Back to politic and get to long time journalist

Bob Woodward reveals that former president
Donald Trump has maintained close contact with russian president vladimir putin since he left office. The upcoming book titled war cites an unnamed
Trump Aide claiming that the former
President And Putin have spoken as many as seven times since trump left the
White House back in january of 2021. The book alleges that as those conversations were happening between trump and putin, trump was also pressuring republicans in congress to block
Military Aid to ukraine and to do what ukraine needs to defend itself against russias invasion. Additionally, the book revealed back in 2020 trump secretly sent
Putin Covid tests for his personal use when many americans simply couldnt get them. Woodward, of course, the renowned journalist who uncovered watergate, concludes trump as president was, quote, worse than richard nixon. The book goes on sale next tuesday. A
Trump Campaign Spokesman issued a response to the title stating in part this. None of these stories made up by
Bob Woodward are true and are the work of a truly demented and deranged man who suffers from a debilitating case of trump derangement syndrome. Meanwhile, at a
Campaign Event in detroit yesterday, trumps running mate, j. D. Vance, was dismissive when asked about woodward. I honestly didnt know
Bob Woodward was still alive until you asked me that question. Thats what little i know about
Bob Woodward is that he is im going to use a word here. He is a hack. The guys a hack. So have i talked to
Donald Trump about his calls with vladimir putin . No, ive never had that conversation with
Donald Trump in my life. But if
Donald Trump even if its true, is there something wrong with speaking to
World Leaders . No . Is there anything wrong with engaging in diplomacy . Joining us now white
House Correspondent for
Politico And Coauthor of the
Play Book you gene daniels. There is an issue when someone is engaging in diplomacy when that person is not the president. Theres only one president , of course, at a time. Eugene, give us the reaction here to this new
Explosive Reporting from
Bob Woodward on these calls in particular. What is the
White House and the biden administration saying, and what does the
Harris Campaign say about trump continuing to consort with someone who has an avowed enemy of the united states, and someone whose military continues their invasion of ukraine . One, the aides that we talked to say that it is absolutely as you just alluded to quite abnormal and not something that is done in this country to have former president s especially dealing with calling on behalf of the country in any way, shape, or form other leaders, especially our adversaries. That is not something former president s do or have done largely because they respect the at this point, the men that have been in office after them and allow them to have that kind of
Foreign Policy movements the way that they want to do it. And the second is, you know, a lot of the aides that i spoke both within the
White House and on the
Harris Campaign say that this is more of the same, that they feel like this reporting is just, you know, us watching over the years how former president
Donald Trump as president and after has praised president putin, the way that hes done things, believed him over the intelligence agencies. You were there in helsinki when he did that in that press conference. And so they see it as more of the same. Theres no reason at this point because it is
Bob Woodward. He is for a very long time convinced very smart and wellconnected people to tell him a lot of information. And so that they seem to believe in it. For them its more of the same, and theyre probably going to continue to use this as a reason why they feel like
Donald Trump shouldnt get back into office because in their eyes you
Cant Trust him. Eugene, lets look at some of the other headlines here from the upcoming woodward book, a lot of them about
President Biden, how he feels about trump. Spoiler, not too kindly. Also expressing real frustration about
Attorney General garland, how slow the pace of the investigations into trump proceeded, and also the probe into his own son, hunter biden. And then real frustration with prime
Minister Netanyahu, a continuing story line, the two men likely to speak again later today as israel gauges what sort of response to deliver against iran. On netanyahu, whats really interesting is that when you talk to aides within the
White House and you ask them how the
President From, you know, the day the president walked in and how theyve felt about netanyahu, they always use the same word with me, and they have a strong relationship but that
President Biden
Behind Closed Doors kind of, you know, speaks truth to netanyahu and they go back and forth in this aggressive manner. And it was always very obvious after
October 7th and as israel continued to started to bomb areas in gaza and then invade gaza that the
White House and
President Biden himself was getting frustrated especially with the toll that it was taking on the civilian and the innocent folks in gaza. So it wasnt surprising to see to see it here that that frustration existed. Theyre going to have that. Soon it will be a complicated call as they always say that they are, so thats not a surprise. Not a surprise how he has talked about and thinks about former president trump. Youve reported the kinds of ways in which
President Biden talks about
Donald Trump
Behind Closed Doors, and so a lot of the things in here are exactly what youd want from a book that is about how the administration is. It either confirms or doubles down, triples down on a lot of the things we have been hearing and more importantly reported throughout getting into a lot of detail, the is what reporters and voters need. Lastly and briefly we mentioned in the show
Kamala Harris media tour yesterday. Whats the reaction from her team as to how they think it went, and should we see more of it . They feel really good. They only have a few weeks left. I dont know if theyre going to do this threeday, fourday fullcourt press every single week. They have to get her out there, they know that. This is what theyve been trying to do. They feel really good about it. They said of all the things shes doing including this

Weve taken all the necessary preparations. You know, weve made sure our
Storm Drains have been cleared. We picked up debris. Weve opened up the
Parking Garages for people to park in at higher elevation. Weve issued a state of emergency. Theres an evacuation order. Police have gone through neighborhoods announcing to people, weve gone into some of the older the
Retirement Homes and encouraged people to go to shelter. Now its up to the people, and whats left for us is to see what happens with the storm and then how we respond. So youve been two decades as a public servant including as a member of the
Fort Myers police department. You, of course, responded to a number of major storms like this. As milton is so huge as
It Barrels towards florida, what is your level of concern compared to some of the previous ones . I have gone through a lot of storms, and ian has been by far the worst one. But ill be honest and ive said this publicly, i am very concerned about the storm, the size of it, the strength, the
Storm Surge, all of it. Ive encouraged people to please pay attention to this storm and follow the
Evacuation Orders. So, mr. Mayor, in the wake of
Hurricane Helene just two weeks ago or so, theres been a lot of misinformation, disinformation put forward by public officials and others. Theres been a real concern that misinformation is leading people to not seek help from the government, to make bad, hazardous decisions. How worried are you as this storm approaches about similar disinformation about the storm . Well, the misinformation, disinformation is always going to be a problem. We encourage people go to our site, the city site. Go to the
Lee County
Government Site and the state site. Theyre going to get the right information. I think people are believing whats being put out there because weve seen more
Businesses Downtown Board up, and i believe were seeing more people actually leave these evacuation zones. All right, well, of course, we wish you and your city safe. Good luck and that everyone can. All right. Well, of course, we wish you and your city safe. Good luck, hope that everyone can stay safe. Mayor
Kevin Anderson of
Fort Myers, florida, we appreciate it. Thank you. Up next here, well turn to politics and dig into the comments that

Bob Woodward details how republican
Senator Lindsey Graham blamed the culture of maralago for
Donald Trumps inability to put the 2020 election behind him. So in a conversation with colleagues, graham reportedly said, quote, its the attitude down in maralago. You know, all the people he hangs around with down there. They constant feed this narrative. He thinks he lost because of all of these bizarre conspiracies, he didnt. Biden won fair and square, graham added. Trump doesnt like to hear that. I imagine doesnt like hearing that quote either. Joining
Us Congress
Investigations Reporter for the washington post, jackie alemany. Jackie, good to see you, certainly when
Donald Trump was in office, his aides would always get nervous, when hed go to bedminster, they werent sure what his friends would say to him, hed come back with a crazy idea. Some say it helped perpetuate the big lie. Absolutely, over the past four years, as the former president built this cocoon around him and filled his club with all of these people who told him exactly what he wanted to be hearing, especially in the wake of january 6. But, you know, in typical company and fashion, there was really theres really been little they can do about that. There are people like nick fuentes, lora loomer, all of these have made their way around the campaign. But lindsey grahams very candid
Ontherecord Account of what maralago, akin to north korea, a praise thats lavished trump at times. Is a rare
Ontherecord Account. Right its another moment, where we have a prominent lawmaker say one thing behind the scenes about trump that he would never see in a public setting in front of the media, lets say. That to that point it continuing even now to a very dangerous moment for our country. Donald trump is the
Lead Spreader about part of the disinformation about the response to helene. And now we have an even bigger
Storm Bearing down on the florida coast. Just talk to us about that dynamic. I mean,
Anna Paulina Looma represents that part of the area where when they came out on tv and said youre going to be killed. She appeared on stage with
Trump Last week. These are lawmakers directly emboldened by trump and rewarded for this propaganda and disinformation. He was even corrected on twitter for demanding that fema provide funding for
Hurricane Relief, even though just two weeks ago she voted against in congress that would have brought more funds to fema. Shes also one of the
Lead Spreader of misinformation that fema has directed funds to help illegal immigrants, rather than
Hurricane Relief, that, of course, is false. Of course there are issues to take up with fema. Every single
Hurricane Weve had, you know, these are really challenging situations with com especially in places like rural
North Carolina. There are real issues that, you know, constituents and lawmakers can take up with fema. But its certainly not the issues that were seeing
Republicans Rally around right now. And talk to us a little more about how the storms become politicized. Of course, theyre moments when politics should be set aside. President biden tried to defuse it yesterday, spoke yesterday, said he spoke to the governor of florida, they had a good conversation. But with the desantis team, his team saying they wouldnt even take a call from
Vice President harris. Yeah. I mean, the timing of itself lends itself to
Pure Politicization of it. Again, this
Anna Paulina Looma is running against in a district that is extremely maga. And st. Petersburg is actually more of a blue city. And this is something thats catching up to her. Shes having to explain why he voted for
Hurricane Relief funds right in the midst of
Hurricane Season. Naturally, youll see republican lawmakers on their heels trying to explain why they didnt support additional funding. And lastly, gives us a look into the senate race. Senator baldwin got polling in the race shows a tightening of the race. I mean, democratic lawmakers across the board, especially, wisconsin, montana, theyre in really tight races. Texas as well. We knew texas was always going to be a long shot but wisconsin and montana were the two hot spots that were especially looking at. Tammy baldwin, again, its turned into a tossup, a place where she would have been a bit of a shooin. Jon tester now. And seems to be behind a fairly vulnerable and weak republican candidate. Its unclear if this is purely
Kamala Harris effect. Or what. But the senate democratic forecast is not right. For sure. And the signs that wisconsin is also a visit for the president ial race in a key battleground.
