Tonight on the reidout watch his rallies. He spends full time engaged in grievance about what has happened to him. He spends full time perpetuating lies and misinformation. He spends full time talking about fictional characters, you know, i mean name calling. And name calling and demeaning people, belittling people. What he does not talk about is you. Vice president kamala harris on the view today with a strong rebuke for donald trump. Part of a wideranging media blitz that included 60 minutes last night and howard stern and stephen colbert today. Meanwhile, donald trump skipping 60 minutes because he didn't want to be fact checked. Plus, stunning revelations in bob woodward's new book including details on how trump secretly sent covid tests to vladimir putin when those tests were still so hard for americans to obtain. And then trump secretly stayed in touch with putin after leaving office. And the texas senate race is surprisingly close. We're going to talk to ted cruz's opponent, congressman colin allred. We begin tonight with just four weeks to go until election day. A number of states have already begun early voting and as the candidate make their final sprint to the finish line, now is the critical time for each to get in front of as many voters as possible to make their case. Today, vice president kamala harris continued her media blitz in an effort to reach a wide variety of audiences on different platforms. This morning, she joined the ladies of the view where she rolled out a new policy about expanding medicare to cover the cost of long term care at home. To your point about being in the sandwich generation, there are so many people in our country who are right in the middle, they're taking care of their kids and taking care of their aging parents. And it's just almost impossible to do it all. Especially if they work. We're finding that so many are then having to leave their job, which means losing a source of income. Not to mention the emotional stress. And so what i am proposing is that basically what we will do is allow medicare to cover inhome health care. Finally. Right. She then went on the howard stern show on sirius xm, discussing an array of topics including what she thinks this election is all about. I do believe that this is an election that is about strength versus weakness. Yeah. And weakness as projected by someone who puts himself in front of the american people and does not have the strength to stand in defense of their needs, their dreams, their desires. The work that must happen to make sure that we are a secure nation, that we are nurturing and protecting our alliances around the world, that we are supporting america's military, that we are fighting to bring the cost of living down for working families. That we're building businesses, building growth. She will also appear on the late show with stephen colbert tonight. This comes after harris already appeared on the podcast call her daddy, one of the most popular podcasts in the country, especially among women. And after appearing last night on 60 minutes. An interview that all major party candidates for president have done for more than half a century. That is, until donald trump canceled last week. Among the various reasons why, according to truffle's campaign, is that 60 minutes, a news program, would have the audacity to fact check the interview. Here's the reality. Trump could do the interview because at this point, he requires the safety of his maga security blanket. Yes, trump may have done a number of interviews but they're almost always with conservative outlets and trump supporters. Most recently with fox's laura ingraham last night and right wing podcaster ben shapiro today. All trump is doing is speaking to his base and his die hard supporters as he faces softball questions with little to no pushback or no followup at all. Allowing him to just regurgitate alternative facts and misinformation with each breath. The two campaign strategies couldn't be more different. One is trying to reach out to diverse audiences while continuing to roll out substantial new policies. The other is remaining in his echo chamber, repeating the same debunked lies in an effort to inflame voters with his deceit. Joining me now is fernand amandi, democratic pollster and msnbc political analyst. Molly jong fast, vanity fair special correspondent, and tara setmayer, cofounder and ceo of the seneca project and a former gop director. My thanks to this fantastic panel. I'm going to start with you, molly. We're going to play scott pely. His explanation of why trump pulled out of the 60 minutes interview. The campaign offered shifting explanations, first, it complained that we would fact check the interview. We fact check every story. Later, trump said he needed an apology for his interview in 2020. Trump claims correspondent leslie stahl said in that interview that hunter biden's controversial laptop came from russia. She never said that. Trump has said his opponent doesn't do interviews because she can't handle them. He had previously declined another debate with harris, so tonight may have been the largest audience for the candidates between now and election day. I mean, molly, that was a doozy, number one. But let's be clear. If kamala harris were to pull out of that 60 minutes interview, the media would lose their minds. Many in legacy media have been super critical of harris for not doing a lot of interviews, so they say. When in fact, the truth is donald trump is the one who continues to refuse to sit down with anyone who is not a friendly face. Sounds like yet another double standard. Yeah, i mean, look, trump is always compared to always given a pass, compared to a normal candidate. He always gets away with stuff that a normal candidate would not. What's important about harris and her strategy which i think is very smart, she's going to where voters are. Where the voters she needs are. For example, howard stern has a lot of white noncollege educated men. That's a demographic that she's going to. Can call her daddy was actually a really brilliant strategy because those are women of child bearing, reproductive age largely, though older women listen to it too. And they need to know about the project 2025. And the plans that this republican president would enact if he were elected. Fernand, trump refuses to do the 60 minutes interview, complaining he's going to be fact checked. He complained about being fact checked at the debate. Looks like he's never going do another debate. Is it because he's a pathological liar and can't tell the truth or is he just too scared to be in a format or platform where he's never going to be able to just run his mouth with impunity or both? he was a pathological liar in 2016, in 2020, and has been ever since. I'm not so sure it's that as much it is trump showed in that debate that there was a way to get to him. Which is to make these crazy kind of appeals to ego that he quickly jumps on. He also understands if he's in any kind of what you might call a legitimate media journalistic environment where he's called on the carpet for a statement he made in the past, he falls apart. I think this is as much a campaign decision by the trump campaign as it is a trump decision. You think he's listening to people telling him not to do this? i absolutely do. And i think trump even himself recognizes the more people see him, the more people hear him, the worse he's going to do in this campaign. They're trying to hide him now and see what they can do to get him across the finish line. That debate was revelatory, that's why kamala harris is desperate to have more debates and why trump has backed out of any opportunity to go one woun again with kamala harris. Like his campaign is like weekend at bernies getting him across the finish line. It's not just interviews. Axios did a study of how many rallies trump has held this campaign cycle compared to 2016, and you can see it up on the screen right now. This was back in september, and it's substantially less. Even in the friendliest environments when he has a tell aprompter, a crowd of fans and no interruptions, trump still doesn't perform on the level he once did. I want to emphasize the verb perform. Are his advisers, to fernand's point, telling him to limit his exposure or in my opinion, i don't think the guy can do it anymore. Yeah, i think it's a combination of both. It's clear that donald trump is not the same guy that he was in 2016 or even '20. It's deteriorated considerably. Even his bronzer isn't as good. He's struggling and we see it happening in the way he talks, the way he misspeaks. He's rambling more, slurring his words more. Trump is not well. And his advisers see that. The more he's out there, the more people see it. He just physically cannot do it. He tries to blame everybody else. He blamed the secret service. He's blaming the venues, blaming democrats, blaming the weather. Whatever. Instead of the fact he can't handle it anymore. And he is the oldest person now in this race. He does not have joe biden as a crutch to blame for being the one that is too old and unfit to do the job. That's why he's obsessed with constantly bringing up joe biden and constantly projecting about how come they just switched him out? because now you're the old guy and everybody can see it. It's more pronounced. And the other thing too about this is i don't know necessarily that he's listening to his advisers, that he understands and recognizes that he can't do it. I think they know how to stroke his ego enough because he will never admit that he's not good enough. He'll never admit he's failing. He'll triple and double down. He'll say he's the best, that he's better looking than harris, whatever nonsense he was saying. He'll never admit that. Instead they're putting him in areas where he is adored. We know that the adulation is his fuel. So they're limiting the rallies by manipulating it in a way that makes it seem as though he's in friendly territory so he's still around people who adore him. I don't see how this straltagy is adding voters. The more he's out there, the more people are repelled by him. The other people who are the boot liquors that are just there to make him feel good about himself, they're figuring out a way to shield him so he doesn't have to look in the mirror literally and see how terrible everything looks for him. And that is something that i think there's a double standard here because we're actually talking about kamala harris maybe making a couple missteps during her view interview today or she's out on a media blitz because she has to have more policy. But donald trump has said a series of insane things in it last five days including talking about bad genes for migrants and lying about hurricane disaster relief that can cost lives but we're not talking utthat. We're nitpicking kamala harris' policy positions. I think that has a factor also, it plays a role also. It's a double standard. Let me be clear. There's no nitpicking going on from me when it comes to that. And let me be clear, the rally goers are also leaving his rallies too. So even in the rallies they're not staying. Quickly before break, you know, one of his friendly interviews, though, was last night with fox's laura ingraham, and he actually did get some pushback on the misinformation he's been spreading about the biden/harris hurricane response. Molly, if he can't even get a friendly face in laura ingraham on fox, if you lose your fox crowd and you're fact checked on fox, do you think it's making a difference to the people watching him on that place? that was an amazing moment. I actually didn't believe it, and i had to fact check it myself because i couldn't believe that that had actually happened. You have to wonder, like, how many lawsuits, at what point does fox just say, we have to fact check this? and look, it was about the hurricane. He and his allies have spread a lot of misinformation about the hurricane and cnn had a piece about all the sort of the whole week of lies about that last hurricane. Which is really dangerous. And really, really scary, and there is another hurricane coming, so it really is just so perilous, and i did think it was an incredible moment to see her fact check him, and again, the lie was harris wasn't in north carolina and in fact she was. That was also important, too, because it's impacting his voters, and fox news viewers. I think they were giving him a mulligan on that because they don't want to see their viewers and his voters suffering also, trying to give him an out on that. That's my cynical take. We don't want anyone suffering. Don't go anywhere, we have much more on kamala harris' media blitz. That's coming up next. Ow white. And let me tell you, they feel amazing. Ok, here is your paperwork, if you want to review it and make sure everything's in order. These factory floormats, are they really as good as weathertech? you know, laser measured? [suspenseful music] no. Nothing comes even close to laser measured weathertech floorliners. They offer the ultimate protection. Front, back and even up the sides. For a full line of premium american made products order at wt. Com nothing protects like weathertech. My panel is back with me now. Fernand, molly, and tara. Fernand, kamala harris was on the view today, and she actually responded to trump's lies about fema on the view. Take a quick listen. It's profound and it is the height of irresponsibility, and frankly, callousness. People are losing their home with no hope of ever being able to reconstruct or return. And the idea that somebody would be playing political games for the sake of himself, but this is so consistent about donald trump. He puts himself before the needs of others. I fear that he really lacks empathy. On a very basic level, to care about the suffering of other people and then understand the role of a leader. Fernand, as a fellow floridian, we have been preparing for a category 5 storm. Kamala harris has such a great point, though. As a leader, you don't just represent republicans, if you're a republican. You represent all fellow americans. But the absurdity we have been hearing is that the whining and complaining from the republicans that this has been a completely political or this has been the politicization of these storms and yet we even have ron desantis that won't take kamala harris' phone calls. This is divide and conquer politics. Their used to be some safe zones you would never politicize, foreign affairs especially when the american president was traveling overseas or natural disasters, anything that impacted at home. The trump philosophy has always been as follows. Democrats are incompetent. Joe biden and kamala harris do not know how to administer so they have to create this lie world, this alternative reality where the economy is in the tank despite the fact the economy is stronger than anywhere in the world today. That the administration is incapable of responding to events, which is absolutely untrue. We have seen the response in western north carolina. It's massive. It's unprecedented. And it was immediate, unlike what we saw in the trump years where the responses to these natural disasters were slow and halting and president trump if at all. Then he would play favorites. We know of circumstances, in north carolina when he was president, he didn't want to send money because it was a democratic governor he didn't want to give a win to. This is part and parcel of the trump playbook. Divide and conquer and lie, lie, lie. The problem now, katie, is you have other sources that are amplifying that, willingly. Elon musk and x is using his platform to disseminate and triple down on these lies. So that's the problem that we're seeing today, and they're being protected also by the rightwing media systems. Fox news and other that are amplifying these lies. I want to make sure people understand this is exactly the truth. Fema has provided more than $286 million with an additional $180 million in mission assignments to federal partners with nearly 7,000 federal personnel deployed including fema staff. There's been a huge, as you say, response from fema. So molly, trump also said in an interview with hugh hewitt yesterday that he's been to gaza. But the new york times fact checked trump's worst nightmare here, fact checked what trump said. They said there's no record of trump going to gaza, and when asked to clarify, a campaign aide said that gaza is, quote, in israel. And because trump has visited israel, well, you know. Molly, trump lies like he breathes. At the same time, and this is the double standard we have been talking about. Tim walz gets dinged because he made comments about visiting tiananmen square in the '80s, which was a while ago. Molly, trump's comments about visiting gaza, why are they not getting the same treatment? it's a false equivalency. The difference between making a mistake or you see a news outlet will make a mistake and apologize, versus brazen lying propaganda. And it's really unbelievable. It happens all the time. Look, i thing it's important to mention, if harris had done this, people would be losing their minds. And i also think, we talked about this earlier. Trump is diminished. He's the oldest person ever to run for president now. He's the oldest person ever to run for president. So he is not the person he was in 2016, and i think you see that with questions like this, with answers like he's been to a place he's never been to. Yeah, and tara, here's the thing. You keep on hearing criticism coming from the republicans and the gop about the fact that kamala harris is going to untraditional media platforms to be able to speak to americans. I think it's been a brilliant strategy to be able to reach voters that maybe aren't the typical person that would be somebody listening to her in the immediate sense. But the hypocrisy is so rank in my opinion. Just because it may be an untraditional place like a podcast, like call her daddy or even the howard stern show, in my opinion, and i'm asking you, if it's a conversation where she doesn't get the questions in advance and there's no issue that's off the table, why does it make it less of a quality conversation? it doesn't. It is a smart strategy. She's legit meeting people where they are. The call me daddy podcast gets 5 million downloads a week. Donald trump is ranting like a lunatic on a fake social media site that he created as a way to like hide money. Are you kidding? they're talking about that? they're going after kamala harris, who has gone on 60 minutes, been interviewed by cnn, who hasn't refused to debate, who does real interviews and is also employing a new modern day media strategy. Meanwhile, donald trump is doing things that are not appealing to mainstream voters. And he's on altright social media outlets. Like, the false equivalency here is laughable, and they're just matt because they can't put donald trump into these other venues because he can't handle it. Period. And she can. It would go down the toilet super fast for donald trump. My fantastic panel, thank you so much for being with me tonight and getting us started.
