Today, in deed, marks the Oneyear Anniversary of the deadliest Terror Attack in israel. Last year hamas fighters stormed across the gaza border, rampaging communities in southern israel. They killed about 1,200 people, and took more than 250 hostages. The biggest massacre happened in the desert where thousands of people were attending the supernova music festival. 364 people were killed there, many others kidnapped. Videos of some of the abductions were shared widely on Social Media including a girl who was later rescued by israeli defense forces. Now more than a year later, hundreds still remain captive in gaza, including seven americans. Its believed more than 30 of the hostages are now dead. After October 7th, israel declared war on hamas, launching one of the most intense bombardments ever recorded in modern warfare. More than 40,000 palestinians have died since. Its unknown how many of those are hamas members. Certainly many innocent civilians and children. Several other iranianbacked groups have also been Trading Fire with israel in support of hamas. The houthis in yemen have been targeting ships in the red sea. In lebanon, attacks have escalated with hezbollah. Last year they launched a Ground Invasion into lebanon. And tensions between Israel And Iran have been rising since tehran launched two miss aisle attacks. Both were thwarted by the u. S. Along with western and arab allies. Joining us from the site is Nbc News international correspondent raf sanchez. Raf, so good to see you this morning. Please, give us an update on what israel is doing to mark the anniversary, and a feel of the nation as they look backward but also is grappling with further violence. Reporter jonathan, good morning. One year ago, the October 7th attack began right here. There were some 3,000 people, most of them young, attending the supernova festival, place of joy, a place of music. Then suddenly hamas gunmen began closing in on all sides, and you can see that this site is now a vast memorial to the more than 300 people who were killed here. Their names, their faces, their stories being remembered. And, of course, its not just those who were killed. There were 40 people taken hostage from this site. And, jonathan, almost unbelievably, nearly half of them are still Hostages Inside Gaza today. The fact that there are around 100 people still held in captivity one year on is an open wound in israeli society. This is not a case of looking back on pain from a year ago. This is every day, agonizing pain continuing here. Now, there was a ceremony at Sun Rise attended by the israeli residents. They played the last track where the music stopped and the shooting started. Weve been Hearing Shooting continuing all day. It is coming from gaza, which is just about two miles that way. Weve seen israeli gunships. It is a reminder on the other side of the border in gaza, there are no memorial come Member Rags going on. There are just palestinian families trying to survive another day as this war drags on. Israeli forces have issued a new set of Evacuation Orders for people in northern gaza. Theyre once again being displaced from their homes, and it is a reminder that this is a very active conflict on multiple fronts, jonathan. International News Correspondent Raf sanchez. During an interview with 60 minutes, Vice President Kamala Harris was press odden the conflict going on in the Middle East and whether the United States, which sends billions of Military Aid to israel, still has any sway with israeli Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu. In a Preview Clip of the full interview, which is set to air later today, harris is asked about how netanyahu has resisted pressure from the biden administration to agree to a ceasefire deal, how hes ignored call from the u. S. About not going to lebanon, and how he has promised retaliation for irans missile attack, which could potentially expand the war. But it seems that prime Minister Netanyahu is not listening. Well, bill, the work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by israel that were prompted by or the result of many things including our advocacy of what needs to happen in the region. Do we have a real close ally in prime Minister Netanyahu . I think, with all due respect, the better question is do we have an important alliance between the american people and the israeli people, and the answer to that question is yes. So Vice President Harris And Governor Tim Walz are ramping up their Media Appearance this week in an effort to reach larger audiences ahead of the rapidly approaching election. Tonight 60 minutes will air that full interview with harris while walz will make his late Night Tv Debut when he sits down with jimmy kimmel. Hell also put his fate with the popular podcast smartless. Tomorrow harris will be on the view, the Stephen Colbert show, and more. Harris is looking to shore up support from latino voters. Joining us now, Senior National Politics Reporter Jonathan allen. Good to see you. Its been a steady drumbeat of democrats for Kamala Harris. They were talking on the Morning Joe about that. Had a major story about it. And they are now shifting tactics. Talk about what they hope to do with this Media Blitz. Jonathan, i think the short answer is they hope to shake up the race a little bit to lift the trajectory of the Harris Walz Campaign to try to reach more voters, both their Base Voters and also in some cases some independents. It depends on the venue theyre dealing with. Most of these interviews are stillIt In that category of kind of friendlies for the democrats. Theyre not venturing out into the sort of most dangerous territory of the highprofile independent, except for The One 60 minute interview Vice President harris did. From a strategic standpoint, theyre looking for votes, and theyre very quick to reach a lot of voters if youre doing big media, right . Its a lot easier than traveling from state to state. It cant be said enough how this has been the sort of secret Story Line on democrats in the last couple of weeks. Ive heard from democrats, yes, A Thousand times yes, they need to do this. Jonathan, youve been reporting how some of the messaging on the Harris Campaign Ticket is going negative on trump. Yes, jonathan. A lot of the campaign has been going negative on trump. But what were seeing is a shift, a combination of kind of two things toward if not entirely negative, a lot more contrast, which is a little more positive about the democratic candidate, a little more negative about the republican candidate, and then the straight negative. You see the ads being placed around the country. Thats partially due to being where we are on the campaign season, but you often see this shift to the negative. Also one Campaign Official told me, theyre concerned that the numbers arent moving, you know, with the current mix that they have with the ads and what theyve been doing. Look, its a close race. We know its been a close race all along that hasnt changed and both sides are looking for what they have to gape. The Harris Campaign has to remind voters what they dislike about trump. Certainly there are super pacs affiliated with trump who are hammering harris with negative advertising. But lets talk about the ticket itself and whether they plan to do more major interviews. Lets be clear. Trump himself does not sit for any adversarial questioning whatsoever. Its friendly audience after friendly audience. Any change coming there . I dont expect that, jonathan. Weve already seen that former President Trump doesnt want to do debates. Weve seen him skip out on the 60 minutes interview. Usually both candidates sit down with 60 minutes. I dont see that being beneficial. One of the reasons is he may remind Swing Voters what they dont like about him, exactly what the Harris Campaign is trying to do. So i expect to see him also, you know, spending most of his time with what we call friendlies. I believe hes supposed to be on the Hugh Hewitt show. Hughs a great interviewer, but hes reportedly on the republican side. Thats a good point. We have four weeks to go. Jonathan allen, thank you for starting off the morning.
