To get her Food And Water after hurricane helene. Good evening. Once again, i am Stephanie Ruhle and we are not just 34 days away from the election. To make a special Counsel Jack Smith. He says his Selection Interference Case against Donald Trump should go ahead despite the supreme Court Ruling on president ial immunity. In a newly unsealed find filing, smith says trump resorted to crimes to stay in office and was fundamentally acting as a citizen, not president. The finally also gives more detail about What Smith found in his investigation. According to a Grand Jury testimony, and aid rushed to trump on January 6 to tell him that an angry mob was threatening vp Mike Pence. Donald trumps response quote, So What. Trumps campaign says the filing is riddled with falsehoods and called it an unconstitutional witchhunt. Tonight the Trump Team filed a motion asking for more time to submit their response. More on this story coming up. It is just the latest headline to a potentially big shakeup in the president ial race. The southeast is still recovering from hurricane helene. Tensions in the Middle East are escalating in a strike is now shut down ports across the East And Gulf coast. Here is Gabe Gutierrez with more. We met tonight, a Triple Threat is looming over the president ial campaign, the rising tensions in the Middle East, a Deadlock Port Strike threatening to raise prices. We are hearing from the folks originally. Reporter and, the devastating aftermath of hurricane helene. Theres a lot of work thats going to need to happen over the coming days, weeks, months. Reporter today, Vice President harris visiting the Storm Zone around georgia, two days after former President Trump went there. With that lets get smarter with the help of our Leadoff Panel tonight. John allen is here. Aaron haynes, editor at large for the 19th and molly john fast, special correspondent for Vanity Fair and msnbc contributor. John, since moments before the show i saw you feverishly moving around candlesticks in the core behind you. Im just so grateful your Table Skipping for the show so you get to go first. Jack smith. Somebody may have forgotten about jack but he didnt forget about us. What sticks out to you . I was just going to say my wife, stephanie, also named stephanie, would kill me if she thought i forgot the pumpkin and skull. And i love them both. Halloween is my favorite holiday so thank you to stephanie. Lets talk about Jack Smith. What stuck out to you in the filing and you think its can have any effect on the 2024 raise . What sticks out in the filing i think is where the fight will be, which is over the discussions Donald Trump had with Vice PresidentMike Pence and whether those things are allowable as part of the prosecution given that the Supreme Court has made this distinction basically saying that the official asked acts of a president or not something he can be held accountable for so the question is which of the conversations between Vice President pence and President Trump when President Trump was trying to get him to overturn the results of the 2020 election might be admissible and so there is a lot of discussion in this filing of just what Mike Pence told folks. In fact, i thought one of the most interesting things is that he had five pages of contemporaneous notes about one meeting in which the prosecutors say Donald Trump was told by a lawyer that his plan to help parents basically reject the certification of electors was illegal, and so i think we are seeing the outlines of that fight. The other big thing here of course is Jack Smith basically laying out his entire case against Donald Trump with co conspirators, names redacted, but people know who they are and you know, doing that right now before the election, so the question is, that you post about whether this is going to have an effect im not sure that it will. I do think it is a jarring reminder of just what happened during that period of time but i also think most americans have made up their minds about it. It is not something they particularly want to talk about. Last night Jd Vance not only had January 6 brought up to him and i thought it was much more poignant that his commentary on January 6th was the fact that he would not say that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. That, the possibility of recurrence, i think is a lot more on the minds of voters, particularly democratic voters but also maybe some Swing Voters, then whether Donald Trump is guilty of crimes from four years ago not because of the time distance is so much for just because voters tend to look forward, not backward. Yeah, and some are getting worried about January 6, 2025. Aaron, when you look at hurricane helene, what is happening in the Middle East and the Dock Workers strike what you think could have the biggest impact on the election. We always talk about the october surprise. We are getting a lot in the month has barely started. I think the way that you framed this at the start of the show is exactly right. Theres so much happening in the country, so much happening in the world that is bringing the stakes of this election into stark relief for many of the american people. You know, i do think that President Biden and Vice President harris being in North Carolina and georgia today, that is meaningful. This is what the president does after a disaster. Hes going to florida and georgia tomorrow to see more of the storms impact in this region and this is what particularly this president is known for, given his empathy. You had former President Trump in georgia last week though, surveying the damage. These trips are detour from the Campaign Trail but they do focus Voters Attention onto ongoing efforts to rebuild after this devastating storm in the midst of the Election Season and it shows how a Working President can behave and respond to this moment. I think it does matter. By the way, early voting is about to begin in both of these states is folks are still going about the business of putting their lives back together but with five weeks to go until election day, everything feels political. The Dock Strike you mention, labor is a huge constituency for both Trump And Harrison even if youre not in the union, that is a supplychain issue. Experts say it might not affect people immediately but depending on how long this lasts, it could be something that affects people who are not necessarily part of a dockworker who is trying to push for better conditions for themselves. This could be something affecting a lot more people across the country. Absolutely. Four or five weeks from now they can walk into a Grocery Store in the Produce Section is empty, they could say this is not working for me despite the fact there is little the president can do on this and at this point he said he doesnt want to get in the middle of it. Molly, this time Last Night there were heartaches everywhere. It has now been 24 hours. Cooler heads have prevailed. What is yours thinking . Its interesting because it is almost as if the pundits all said right after it happened that vance had won because he was smoother. He was able to get a lot help her quickly, a lot of it not true, but very smooth and very fast, like someone who has had a lot of experience debating. Meanwhile, walls sort of looked a little bit scared and pale. Perhaps it was a moment for bronzer. No, im just kidding. You know, and there was this sort of kneejerk reaction that perhaps a vance, by lying so effectively and being so sort of congenial in a certain way, may have sold Trumpism Without Trump, which has been sort of the long dream of the Republican Party but i do think that since it has been 24 hours, we are seeing that actually a lot of voters really like walz better, and you even saw that on the right there is a statistic that sort of 25 of the right wingish voters who watched it found they liked walz. So, that midwestern nice, i actually do think translated, and maybe he did not get quite all the hits in, and he was maybe not able to provide the realtime Fact Check in the way that in an ideal world, he wouldve been able to but his personality still transmitted in a way that voters like to make you think vance, if you want to spend time being worried, you can worry about that vance was able to make Trumpism Without Trump seem a little bit more possible and i think that might have implications for 2028. Laid out then, aaron, because Jd Vance came across smart, quick incapable but as molly just said, the things he was saying smoothly, fast and speedily and capably, they were filled with lies. He lied about the nationwide abortion ban. He lied about the affordable care act. He would not confirm the outcome of the last election, so which matters more to Swing Voters . And i cringe when i say Swing Voters because i dont know if i believe there are any swings or undecideds left, but i leave it to you. Yeah, i mean look, i think both candidates pretty much met expectations. I think we know that debating was Jd Vances strong suit. Tim walz said that he was not the best debate about what we think as journalists, as pundits, is not necessarily the same thing that voters think. Which one of these candidates was the one voters found more relatable, right . Former President Trump was really the only person out of the four people we have not seen in a Debate Setting that the american people really are very familiar with. The rest of these candidates are still very much trying to introduce themselves to the american people so i think weve now had a chance to see all four candidates in the Debate Setting and it is unclear whether we will again but i do think having more interviews with Vance And Walz would be helpful but i think what they also do on the Campaign Trail over the next five weeks is probably going to matter a lot more than what we saw Last Night. John, isnt that funny . The rise of Donald Trump in politics we kept hearing over and over, he doesnt speak like a politician. Hes not slick, hes not quick you know, he just speaks like a regular old person and that connects with people. That is exactly what we said about Tim WalzLast Night and he was criticized for them when democrats are slick and fast and cool and elites from Ivy League schools they get crushed for it and that is exactly who Jd Vance is. I dont know. I guess i would look at Barack Obama and say here was a guy who is pretty smooth and quick and adroit on his feet and had education and democrats loved him and a lot of independence loved him. I would say this though, stephanie. I think there was an implicit rejection of Donald TrumpLast Night, which is, we saw a normal debate, a simple debate. The debate were both candidates expressed compassion for people who dont share their political affiliation or who dont agree with him on policy and that in and of itself is really the first time weve seen a debate like that in about a decade now since trump got on the scene. I also think that while it is interesting to watch and while there are Permission Structures created, say for on the republican side for people who are already leaning toward Trumpet Trump but dont believe everything he says, nobody is voting in the selection based on these Vice President ial candidates. If you dont know how you feel about Donald Trump, love him or hate us him, if you dont know how you feel about kamala harris, love her or hate her, you missed the movie. That is what you vote on. It will be people going well you know, i really like the cut of Jd Vance is so forget all the things i dont like about Donald Trump or man, Tim Walz, hes so friendly. I like him better and think it would be a better present that then kamala harris. There is nobody saying that. No, but there are a lot of people out there saying that they like or dislike a candidate enough that theyre going to get off the couch and go vote. In 2016 a lot of people did not really know who Donald Trump was. They were excited about something new and different and now we might be excited or not about him but you know every single thing there is to know. Molly, aaron, john. Thank you all so much. John, again, love the skull. Last night Jd Vance told you to think back to the years of the Trump Administration so before we go to break i actually want to do just that because today is October 2nd and i want to give you a reminder of what was going on every October 2nd during trumps presidency, what Jd Vance thinks was the greatest time ever in this country. The country was reeling one day after the deadliest Mass Shooting in u. S. History at a Music Festival in las vegas. The focus was on how to stop gun violence, a member of White HouseTalking Point said this. Quote, new laws wont stop the madman. In 2018 the Washington Post Journalist was murdered in turkey. Eventually, the cia concluded the leader of Saudi Arabia ordered the assassination but then, trump backed Saudi Arabias rulers and took absolutely no action for the killing. In 2019 trump was fighting the inquiry that would eventually lead to his impeachment. In between, because the investigation bs. In 2020 after months of downplaying the seriousness of the covid19 pandemic, Donald Trump announced that he tested positive for covid and he was then taken to walter reed. That is what the Trump Administration was really like so if youre wondering what Jd Vance was talking about, the trump years, there you have it. When we return, the new evidence on special Counsel Jack Smiths explosive court filing. We are going to get into it. Later, no sign of progress as a Port Strike is underway across the eastern gulf coast. I will talk to Governor Westmore of maryland about the impact it is having across his state. We are still following special Counsel Jack Smiths explosive new filing in the Inter
