Good evening. Im Alicia Menendez here with symone Sanders Townsend and michael steele. As of this minute, we are 34 days from Election Day 2024. A short time ago, democratic governor Tim Walz of minnesota and republican senator j. D. Vance of ohio faced over the first and only Vice President ial debate this cycle. Folks, lets be clear. The debate might have seemed normal but must nothing was normal on what happened on that stage. J. D. Vance tried to rewrite swaths of Terms Policy positions. Flat out lied about issues like abortion, Health Care, and immigration. Arguably the biggest moment of the night was the final moment. J. D. Vance was on the Debate Stage tonight. Mike pence, Donald Trumps former Vice President had the audacity to certify the 2020 election results. Here is what j. D. Vance said when he was pressed tonight and trumps long running election lies. Would you seek to challenge this Years Election results even if every governor certifies the results . First of all, were focused on the future. It is rich for democratic leaders to say that Donald Trump is a unique threat to democracy when he peacefully gave overpower on january 20. This was a threat to the democracy and away we have not seen. It manifested itself because of Trumps Ability to say, he is still saying, he did not lose the election. Did he lose a 2020 election . Tim, im focused on the future. Did Kamala Harris Censor Americans was speaking the mind in the week of the 2020 covid situation . Spirit that is a damning nonanswer. I see a candidate who refused, and now again, im shocked by this, he lost the election. America, you have a clear choice on the selection and who will honor the democracy and who will honor Donald Trump. What did you make of that moment . It was, okay, theres a lot to unpack. I will start with this. This for 8. 5 rounds was the polished Yale Debate Champion doing what they do. Ducking and jiving and moving and sliding. All of that. Walz was holding his own and putting out Policy Threads and laying down stuff like that. That moment, that moment in the ninth round after losing on points for eight rounds, knockout. Because, i dont care where you are on policy, and yes, its important. It is so important and theres so much stuff to get to from abortion to the economy to whats happening right now in israel. You have to fundamentally understand The Truth. If you cannot in 2024 answer that question, you are unfit for office. It doesnt matter what else you did for 89 minutes. That last minute, you cannot answer that question because the guy who was watching that you are performing for will kick your behind when you get off that stage, tells me and should tell the country you are unfit for office. Everybody who will analyze the hell out of this and give his answer his do. Brother, you can debate, baby. Theres no question you can debate. We knew that going in. But you know where you screw up . When you look the country in the Eye And Lie to them. You cannot say that your boss, the guy you are shilling for lost that election. Because you know what . Is Minnesota Nice said tonight, your behind is on that stage because Mike Pence would not do what you just did and that is lie about what happened on January 6. I want to be clear. I agree with with the chairman just said. That January 6 exchange was, i think, a very important moment in this debate because, you know, Mike Pence is available. He didnt want to do it. This is very clear. I felt for a lot of this debate that it was existing in a reality we dont actually live in. That is how i felt. I really did feel there was all this, i agree with you, but let me give a different point. I think there was a Little Too much of that. Everybody in the debate, i think, showed up as someone i had not seen before. Thats not the Governor Walz i am used to seeing. I think thats a function, thats not an indictment on him but the debate strategy, and im being specific when i say that. I think j. D. Vance showed up as someone we dont usually see at all. He cares about the women that died from the policies that Donald Trump said . I think amber should be alive today. She should. Lets talk about why she is not. The moderators who may have great respect for, thats not what margaret does on sunday. Thats not what nora does. Given that, within that alternate Reality Everyone would love to live in, and again, whats the Vice President like to see . I am burdened by what it is. I think we need to live in the exist in the reality of what this election is and what the electorate is seeing and how the candidates actually are. Donald trump is at that time but the republican ticket. Given all of that, the January 6 exchange was strong, and the Abortion Portion where Governor Walz, i think, really did defend , i think it mightve gotten lost for some people because it was not a forceful delivery. For me the debate is about Performance And Policy and the clips. A lot of people will experience this debate from the clips they see on our show that we will have right now in local news and social media. Those are two livable moments that should be turned into ads to help bolster the case. I also think the second exchange on housing was very important. Housing is the number 1 issue for a lot of folks across the country. I dont want people to be upset or get anxiety or anything. I dont want people to get mad at me. All i can do is tell you The Truth. The truth is when you talk to people across the country that are not every day and im not talking about High School students or college students, im talking like millennials millennials like myself. People who are on the College Campus, maybe theyre older, younger people, i have been dismayed and michael youre on a College Campus on a regular basis. The number of young people who say i dont know if im going to vote. What was your take . My take is the January 6 moment clarify the other lies that you sought j. D. Vance trying to modulate his positions on abortion, On Immigration, on Health Care. They are all lies. The fact he then, in the 9th inning, could not help but say, im liking about this. What else are you lying about . That is why the format was a little bit funky. I want to listen, just to give a sense. Here is j. D. Vance trying to defend Donald Trumps, quote, concepts of a plan when it comes to replacing the affordable care act. I think, a lot of people have criticized this concept of a plan remark. Its very simple common sense. Is Tim Walz knows from 12 years in congress, you dont propose a 900 Page Bill standing on a Debate Stage. And can we listen to j. D. Vance of preexisting conditions and will talk about the two of them together. Look, we have laws and regulations in place right now the protect people with pre existing conditions. We want to keep those regulations in place but we want to make the Health Insurance Marketplace function a little better. What Governor Walz just said is not true. A lot of what happened in the recent obamacare was crushing under his weight is a lot of young and healthy people were leaving the exchanges. Trump actually helped address the problem and he did so in a way the preserve Peoples Access to coverage who had pre existing conditions. Donald trump tried to in the room with all of that was supposedly happening . The whole formulation around, repeal and replace and listening to, before trump showed up, what the Game Plan was. After trump showed up, what the Game Plan was. Trust me, america. Saving obamacare was not a priority of Donald Trump. That was one of those moments where you go, he lying. America should look at that moment ago, if you lied about this and this is before we got to the Big Lie about January 6. What if they dont know he is lying . Thats my biggest concern. There are people dont know that that is a lie because it sounded normal. He was like trump helped fix a lot of it. The governor came back and clearly laid out what the plan he is describing was what lake was like before preexisting was covered and j. D. Vance was like, Donald Trump strengthened obamacare. You have to tell us whether the lion did not happen. For people who dont know better . For me, thats were some of the Breakdown Tonight with the governor in his response, you know, i agree with you. I agree with you. When Mitt Romney is your president ial nominee, you can say that to the Vice President ial candidate. With Donald Trump is your president ial nominee . You cant give that kind of runway. Because everything that is setting up to that moment is a lie. When j. D. Vance knows well that No One in that administration was about Saving Obamacare when for four years what do we hear . Repeal and replace. They did not put a plan on the table. There was no plan out of the republican caucus for obamacare to replace obamacare. He couldnt do infrastructure for god sake. They are still talking about Reinvigorating Manufacture and meanwhile Joe Biden and Kamala Harris did that. I dont know if this stuck out to you. I know, we know that the Vice President , whoever it is, they are number 2 on the door, not number 1. Tonight, No One made the distinction. The Vice President does not actually you know what i mean . You been number 2. Not every single time j. D. Vance needed to be corrected but one point in time it needed to be corrected. There are people out there, voters, democrats are trying to get to think the Vice President has power to do something. Joe biden is president. Joe biden negotiated the prices. The Vice President was there and helped. Joe biden is still the president and i dont know what advisers are telling the democratic candidates they should not speak about the democratic president. Bad strategy. Jd what do you think you will be doing is Vice President of the united states . What you think Donald Trump will let you do . Come on, man. You be sitting on Massachusetts Avenue hoping you can go in the car and get to the White House. He leaned back in his chair and people watching this, you dont know what that means. That a tell that theres more to get to over these next two hours. After the break, Texas Congresswoman Jasmine crockett will join the conversation and she is live. You are watching the coverage of the 2024 Vice President ial debate. What i know under Kamala Harris, more people are covered than they have before. Those of you listening, this is critical. Donald trump all of a sudden, go back and remember this, he ran on the first thing he was going to do on Day One was to repeal obama care. On Day One he tried to sign an Executive Order to repeal the aca. He signed and will also to repeal the aca but lost to the Supreme Court. He wouldve repealed the aca had it not been for the courage of John Mccain to save that bill. Hat bill. Why choose a mobile network built for places youll probably never be. Instead of for where you are most of the time . Xfinity mobile was designed for where you need it most. Xfinity internet customers, ask how to get a free 5g Phone and a second unlimited line free for a year. Look, The One thing and probably surprised to hear me praising Joe Biden, but The One thing Joe Biden did as he continued some of the trumps tariffs that protected manufacturing jobs. Its a one issue, the most pro Worker Part of the biden administration, The One issuer Kamala Harris has run away from Joe Bidens record. Think about this. If youre trying to employ Slave Labor in china at Three Dollars a day, youre going to do that and undercut the wages of american workers on the Sever Country stands up and says you are not accessing our markets unless you pay middle class americans a fair wage. We have a new statement of from the Harris Walz Campaign Chair about the Vice President ial debate. quote, tonight Governor Walz should exactly why Vice President harris picked him. Hes a leader who cares about the issues that matter most to the american people in the debate, americans got to see a real contrast. A Street Taco focused on sharing real solutions in a slick politician to spend the whole night defending Donald Trumps division and failures. Joining us, live from the Spin Room is democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett of texas. Shes one of the national cochairs for the Harris Walz campaign. Good to see you, congresswoman. Thank you for being with us. I just want to get your thoughts about tonight. I think we have settled here at the table that there were some moments like, for example, the January 6 moment that kind of hit a lot of nerves. What, for you, stood out as a clarifying moment for this debate . I think the Health Care conversation was another one of those conversations. You know, j. D. Vance was given a tough job. He had to defend the indefensible. He went in there and he was doing his darndest, right . Standing up for January 6 and making sure he could defend concepts of a plan. The reality is with the governor laid out is if you have preexisting conditions, you definitely will be left behind when we look back to what the world looked like before the affordable care act. It was daunting. The conversation. J. D. Vance tried to dance around and said i think republicans are talking about it the right way. No. The problem is how you talking about it but what you have done about it. We are only having these conversations because you had the audacity to install these radicals on the Supreme Court that have decided to throw us into chaos. If i have to be honest, thats the only thing that Donald Trump is really good at is finding us in a space of chaos. When we look at the border conversation, i think we really couldve highlighted the fact The One given an opportunity to be this bipartisan being that we saw j. D. Vance trying to be on the stage today, j. D. Vance voted down the bipartisan bill on the border. The same way that he voted down an opportunity to protect ivf when there were republicans that didnt. He talks a good game. He was slick with it. At The End of the day there was only one person who came with receipts and a record and that was definitely the governor the talked about what his state is doing, and honestly, if you want a country that looks like a place in which Amber Woods would be alive, that is what we were given the vision of when we heard from the governor. Congresswoman, lets talk about some of those receipts receipts, Governor Walz talking about infertility and Republicans Project 2025. Take a listen. There project 2025 is going to have a registry of pregnancies. Its going to get more difficult if not impossible to get contraception and limit access if not eliminate access to Infertility Treatments. For so many listening, me included, Infertility Treatments is why i have a child. That is nobody elses business. Those things are being proposed. To catch all on this is, the states will decide what is right for texas might not be right for washington. That is not how this works. Its basic human right. I thought it was strong the governor said how can we as a nation say your life and rights as basic as a right to control your body is determined on geography as someone who is in one of the states it was name checked there. Texas. How do you respond to this assertion from j. D. Vance and come down to the states . Its a joke. Honestly, for him to sit there and say amber should be alive. I agree. Just like when there was an opportunity to talk about Gun Violence, all those kids should be alive. There are things we can do. You were supposed to be running for office to make sure that we dont have to continuously send thoughts and prayers because you are actually implementing policy that will better peoples lives and protect them, and they dont have any plans to do that. The governor is right. Magic 2025 seeks to go further than what we are experiencing right now. It seeks to literally get rid of our ability to access contraception, and the fact i am a woman that lives in texas and i dont have the same access to Health Care as someone that lives in a quote unquote woke state, doesnt make sense. It should not be that literally, i may lose my life trying to bring a life into this world because the doctors are concerned they are going to go to prison, and instead of falling back on the Training And Expertise they have, theyre trying to Video Figure out with idiots in the legislature decided theyre going to do when most of those people, if not all the people making the laws, literally have no expertise whatsoever in anything that has to do with women bringing forth children in this world. You know, as i listen to you, it really strikes me that tonight on the Debate Stage, Senator Vance sounded like someone is. Someone sympathetic to women and children. Someone that agreed with Governor Walz on how to tackle some of the big issues and said theres ways they can work together. It was as though he was building a new platform in real time on national television. What does a campaign do with that . With this many days as we are having this conversation, we are a little over a month out from Election Day, and people are already voting in many of the key critical states. I know one of the ads to your campaign and a text noting the January 6 exchange has been flipped into a add but what else . How do you reach people in close some of the gaps that exist, not just with moderate voters or independent voters or the undecided voters that everybody thinks they know, but i am talking about base democratic voters . Here is the deal. I think people who are tuned in and watching msnbc or a, b, c or whichever network they are watching, even fox, the people who are in the news and watching the news, think they made up their mind. Regardless as to whether they may say they are undecided, think theyve made up their mind. Whether or not they want to reveal is another iss
