Happening especially now its so late in the season for the hurricanes. That was donald Trump Yesterday in georgia, but not only did forecasters indeed know about the Size And Strength of Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Season still has several more weeks remaining. Well bring you an update on Recovery Efforts and show you President Bidens fiery response to trumps false claims. Also ahead, well bring you the latest from the Middle East as israel launches a Ground Offensive into Southern Lebanon after weeks of deadly Air Strikes targeting hezbollah militants. And, of course, well preview what could be the final debate of the 2024 president ial race with the Running Mates set to square off Tonight Right here in new York City. Good morning, and welcome to Way Too Early on this tuesday, october 1st. We are in october now. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us. And we have a lot to get to this morning, but well begin with breaking news. The israeli military has started a Ground Offensive in lebanon. Overnight idf officials announced the troops crossed the border for a targeted operation, posting this video on Social Media. The israeli military notified the u. S. About itS Plan and says the goal is to push hezbollah further away from the border. This comes just days after israel killed the terrorist groups leader, Hassan Nasrallah. We will have full analysis what the incursion means for the wider region and hear what President Biden had to say yesterday. Thats straight ahead on Way Too Early. And Foreign Policy including whats happening in the Middle East will likely be a key Topic Tonight as minnesota governor Tim Walz and ohio senator j. D. Vance face off in the first and only Vice President ial debate. Cbs news will host the event here in new york. It will be moderated by Cbs Evening News anchor norra odonnell, and face the nation moderator, margaret brennen. Cbs says there will be no live Fact Checking by the moderators, but the broadcast will feature a Qr Code on the screen, which will link to a realtime Fact Check being done by cbs journalists. There will not be a live audience inside the Debate Hall for the 90minute debate. But unlike the two president ial debates so far this year, the microphones will not be muted while the other candidate is speaking. We, of course, will have much, much more on the debate throughout the morning. Meanwhile, the Death Toll from Hurricane Helene continues to rise across six states after the devastating storm ripped through the southeast. As of now at least 125 people are dead florida, georgia, south carolina, tennessee, and virginia. A third of those deaths were reported in North Carolina, where at least 40 people died as a result of catastrophic flooding, leaving entire communities under several feet of water. About 2 Million customers still remain in the dark across those six states. Rescue operations are currently underway as families desperately wait to hear back from missing loved ones. Tomorrow president Joe Biden will take part in an Aerial Tour of asheville, ncaa, to survey the damage there. The survivors, i want you to know the administration is going to be there. And we just talked about this, well finish the job. Its going to take a hell of a long time and a serious amount of assets. Were making sure the hospitals are up and running and they have the capacity to deal with the concerns of people and the means. So there is a lot to do and this is just beginning. And weve been through this before but not like this. This is the worst ever. Additionally, Vice President Kamala Harris canceled several planned campaign Events Yesterday to instead visit Fema Headquarters for an Inperson Briefing on the storm. The White House says harris has been in contact with governors Brian Kemp of georgia and Roy Cooper of North Carolina. The vp has also been in touch with several mayors from that region. She said that she will be on the ground in the impacted area as soon as her Visit Wouldnt disrupt ongoing emergency operations. Lets take a listen to some of harris remarks. To everyone who has been impacted by this storm and to all of those of you who are rightly feeling overwhelmed by the destruction and the loss, our nation is with you. And President Biden and i and all of the folks behind me are with you. We will continue to do everything we can to help you recover and to help you rebuild no matter how long it takes. And i do believe the true character of a nation is revealed in moments of hardship. Over the past few days our nation has endured some of the worst Destruction And Devastation that we have seen in quite some time. And we have responded with our best. Meanwhile, President Biden laid into donald Trump Yesterday after the former president falsely claimed that the White House was ignoring Storm Aid requests from georgias republican governor. While visiting the peach state yesterday, trump claimed multiple times that biden wasnt responding to calls from Georgia Governor kemp. But earlier in the Day Kemp told reporters that he did speak with biden and that the president offered his assistance. Take a look. The president just called me yesterday afternoon. I missed him and i called him right back. And he just said, hey, what do you need. And i told him we got we need, well work through the federal process. He offered if theres other things we need just to call him directly, which i appreciate that. The governors doing a very good job. Hes having a hard time getting the president on the phone. I guess theyre not being responsive. The federal government is not being responsive, but theyre having a very hard time getting the president on the phone. He wont get on it. And of course, the Vice President , shes out Someplace Campaigning looking for money. The governor needs to hes been trying to get them, and im sure theyre going to come through, but hes been calling the president , hasnt been able to get him. Of course, none of that true. Later in the Day Biden was asked about trumps claims while the president was taking questions from reporters in the oval office. Heres what he had to say. Hes lying. Let me get it straight, hes lying. And the governor told him he was lying. Ive spoken to the governor, spent time with him, and he told me hes lying. I dont know why he does this. The reason i get so angry about it, i dont care what he says about me, but i care what he communicates to the people in need. He implies were not doing anything. We are. We are. Joining us now white House Correspondent for the hill. Alex, good morning. Thank you for starting us off today. Lets be clear, you heard it in President Bidens fiery response there. Trump is lying, and the consequence of those lies could be to convince people of North Carolina to not seek federal aid because they think it wouldnt be coming. It is. So lets talk about the politics of this storm. Trump rushed to georgia, rushed to the disaster zone. Biden does an Aerial Tour tomorrow. Harris will get there in the coming days. Talk to us about how the federal government can help but also how this is suddenly going to be an issue here in the 2024 race. Yeah, i think its been politicized as soon as trump hit the ground in georgia, as soon as he started criticizing the federal Governments Response, President Bidens response to this effort, it became a political issue. We know that the president got so angry, as you showed in that clip, because of like you said the consequences of, you know, somebody in North Carolina, somebody in georgia, somebody in florida not thinking that federal assistance is on the way because of the former President Trumps claims. Earlier in the day yesterday President Biden made clear that he doesnt want to go to some of these damaged areas until its hes not interfering with any Disaster Relief efforts. You know, Thats Something we hear from him during all of these times of crisis during hiS Presidency of hes really aware of i dont want to get there too early and mess up some of the response. He stressed that, meanwhile, the former president was already on the ground. They kind of had this unspoken Back And Forth already going on yesterday, and it really came to a head when the president said that in the oval office. And Vice President harris has said that she plans to go as soon as she can, doesnt want to be disruptive either. So ive sure this isnt going to end soon with the former president continuing to bash them for not supposedly moving quickly enough. Youve been writing about how biden told Reporters Yesterday hes considering asking congress to return from recess to get some Storm Relief Funding bill passed. How likely is it that will happen . Yeah, so theyre on thiS Pretty long recess until election day, not coming back until midnovember. And the president said its likely im going to need a supplemental funding package, and that would require them to come home or come back to washington and leave home. I do think the odds of that arent too far off considering this also could be seen as a Messaging Package for some folks in an election cycle. They can say we stepped up, we helped people in need, we gave up our recess to get this done. And considering how catastrophic this event is, i think congress might want to come back. Of course this is very busy time for congress. Everybody in the house is campaigning. The senators are up for reelection. But at the same time this is an unprecedented crisis, as the president has made clear. What were seeing in a state like North Carolina is historic. So if they can come back for a day or two and get this done, it would definitely be an interruption, but i think it might look good for everybody in washington if they can take a break from campaigning. Alex, very briefly. North carolina is a battleground state. Quick thought, how do you think itll play into Tonights Debate . Yeah, its definitely coming up in the debate because North Carolina, like you mentioned, is such a critical state both campaigns are focused on, georgia as well. So the fact this is impacting these critical swing states, i think were just going to hear the moderators say what else can be done . What would be your Response Effort if you were in these positions . And im sure that some of this criticism at the Bidenharris Administration or at trump going yesterday is going to come up from the candidates. White House Correspondent for the hill, alex, thank you for starting us off. Well talk to you again soon. Next up here a lot to get to. Were constantly engineering new ways to get the entertainment you love to you faster and easier than ever. Thats what i do. Is that Love Island . Welcome back to Way Too Early. Its exactly 5 30 a. M. Here on the east coast, 2 30 out west on this Tuesday Morning. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for being with us. We turn back to the Ground Offensive the israeli military has launched in lebanon. Troops crossed the border overnight for a targeted operation aimed at pushing hezbollah further away from israel. This, of course, comes just days after israel killed the militant groups leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Both sides have escalated their attacks in recent weeks. According to the Lebanon Health Ministry more than 1,200 people have died there since midseptember. Its not clear how many of those killed were hezbollah members. Last night u. S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin expressed his support for the Ground Operation, writing in a statement that israel has the right to defend itself but that a diplomatic resolution is still required. Earlier in the day President Biden appeared to have a stronger response to israelS Plan. I just the Fact Israel may be now launching a limited operation into lebanon, are you aware of that . Are you comfortable with their plans . Good im more aware than you might know, and im comfortable with them stopping. We should have a ceasefire now. Joining us now editor at the insider, michael weiss. So good to see you. First, lets start with what do we know about this operation . What its goals might be. What limited means by israeli likes is up for debate. Youll recall, jonathan, the u. S. Didnt want israel to go into rafah. The israelis said, yes, were going to do that. Thats in gaza, and the agreement was to make it the size of the kwigz they sent in. They kept stacking brigades into one division making it two divisions. I think theres a through line here for a war, which is the u. S. Says we would like you to do x, the israelis say thank you very much and they do y. And they get away with it. Taking out Hassan Nasrallah was something the u. S. Explicitly told them dont do, and they did it anyway. It seems this has been a spectacular success for them. And every analyst im talking to now including hawkish ones encouraging this incursion are wary dont let Exacttle Victory Masquerade as strategic defeat. Indeed keep it limited. Obviously they have to take out the launch pads and eliminate the hezbollah operatives south of letani. That for them is a red line. They have to do that. So certainly thats key. U. S. Officials telling me certainly no tears shed for Nasrallahs Death and a lot of blood on his hands including american blood. But there are real fears this could spiral. A lot of people, analysts from the region and here in the united states watching to see what iran might do. Whats your sense, though . Because every time iran has had the ability or had the moment to really hit back, theyve chosen not to. Or simply cannot. I would describe the Campaign Israel has waged in lebanon as one of the three ds, discombobulation, decapitation. Blowing up the pagers and beepers of hezbollah, the people you rely onto run this vast apparatus, this administrative terrorist state, that was a success. Decapitation, within the space of nine days, ten days they took out the entire senior Command Structure of hezbollah and assassinated the leader, a man who commanded a lot of respect in the country. Demoralization, and this is key. Their greatest weapon now iS Psychological. Im monitoring whats happening in arab media, and theres a lot of, you know, mourning and tears for nasrallah. Theres also a lot of conspearicism and a lot of recrimination. People are saying im not making this up in Lebanese Society oh, hes not really dead. This is all a feint to trick the zionnist entity. He killed quite a lebanese, politicians, a lot of Suni Arabs in syria. Theres a sense of reckoning thats taking place now, and the repercussions it might have for the lebanese state are profound. Now, the israelis could sconder all that if they do launch an All Out War and all of a sudden everyone rallies around the flag. Is there a sense right now what hezbollah has left, what sort of armaments do they have to fight back . I spent close to two decades hearing hezbollah has rearmed since 2006 to such an extent they will over 100,000 rockets. Theyll Rain Fire down on israel. No doubt they did rearm this way. My question is to what extent has the israelis completed degraded their arsenal. Ive seen reports its been substantial the amount of rockets and missiles taken out. Remember hezbollah dragged Reb Noninto this war by launching rockets into israel on october 8th, right before actually well before israel went into gaza. A lot of lebanese are saying we did get to vote in all this. Again, coming back to thiS Point this could be the beginning of the end for hezbollah at least so far its the most formidable iranian proxy. They spent 20 years, almost 20 years really anatomizing this organization and infiltrating the hell out of them. Now we will see. President biden already calling for a ceasefire. Israel going into question how limited is this operation . Well talk to you again real soon. Next up here well go live to cnbc for an early look whats driving the day on Wall Street after the S P 500 hit another record close. Plus thousands of Dock Workers are now on strike across the united states. Well have the latest on that and the impact this could have on not only the Shipping Industry but also our national economy. Way too early will be right back. Economy. Way too early will be right back it wasnt hard with cologuard®, i did it my Way Colohuh . Cologuard cologuard is for people 45 at average risk, not high risk. Ask your provider for, Cologuard Time now for business, and for that lets bring in cnbcs Carolyn Roth who joins us live from london. Good morning, carolyn. Stock futures flat so far this morning after the S P 500 closed at a record to end september. Whats driving the market on this first Trading Day of the month . Look, were going to be getting corporate Earnings Today from the likes of nike, the company also getting a new co, so theres a lot of excitement around that. But i just want to put the recent Market Moves in perspective because, hey, weve been up some 20 for the S P this career, roughly up 9 for the major averages thiS Past quarter alone, so maybe some investors are pausing for rest here. But obviously were still watching what the fed is going to be doing going forward. Speaking of the fed, federal Chair Jerome Powell said he still sees a soft landing for the u. S. Economy. Tell us more about what he said. Yeah, that was very important, and it looks like the fed iS Pulling off the unimaginable feat, a soft landing and also protecting the labor market. He said this is also important for the rates market. He said the next cut iS Probably not going to be a jumbo cut, meaning a 50 Baize Point Cut but a couple of 25 basiS Point cuts. The next couple of moves are going to be a lot smaller. Were expecting two 25point basis cuts this year. A Story Weve been keeping an eye on the last couple of days. Thousands of Dock Workers on strike this morning at the Nations East and Gulf Coast ports. Tell us the latest. What could the implications be . Look, the implications here could be huge. Jp morgan out with a note saying the economic costs here could be 5 Billion a day. This is a huge number. And, again, the ramifications here is 50 of all Container Trade that goes in or out of the u. S. Is affected by this strike. Obviously theyre battling out over wages and increased automation when it comes to the ports. Also an analyst i talked to this morning said he expects the disruption to last roughly one week, but then four to six weeks to roughly recover from that. With that, were getting dangerously close to the all important Christmas Shopping season. For consumers what this might mean is obviously the pricing, the affordability, that might be an issue when it comes to certain items like, again, fresh fruit or toys, electronics but also some shortages on certain items. All right, cnbcs carolin roth, live from london, thank you as always. Next up here a judge in georgia has struck down the states sixweek abortion ban. Well dig into that ruling and the political implications next on Way Too Early. Implications on Way Too Early. Llergy reliefs fast and lasts a full 24 hours so dave can be the. Xfinity internet customers, ask how to get a free 5g Phone and a second unlimited line free for a year. Welcome back. Well talk to you about a victory for Abortion Health Care in the state of georgia. A Fulton County Judge yesterday struck down the states strict sixweek ban. That ruling now allows the procedure to resume and makes it legal up to 22 weeks of pregnancy in that state. The ban was originally signed into law by republican governor Brian Kemp back in 2019. The superior Court Judge explained in his ruling that liberty in georgia includes the power for a woman to control her own body. But he added that the power is not unlimited. Stating this when a fetus growing inside a woman reaches viability, when society can assume Care And Responsibility for that separate life, then and only then, May Society intervene. Joining us now Associate Professor of Political Science at fordham university, christina greer. Certainly reproductive rights, Abortion Health Care will be an Issue Tonight in the Vice President ial debate between ohio senator j. D. Vance and the minnesota governor Tim Walz. And we know that abortion looms as one of the decisive issues this november, as it has in every election since dobbs. You do you see it playing out this evening . Oh, itll definitely be front and center, john, because its not just about abortion or a womans reproductive freedom, were actually having a larger conversation about a womans right to choose. And so when the conversation came up during the president ial debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, Donald Trump punted and said, you know, well, thats Jds Issue i dont want to really talk to him about that. Hes been incredibly draconian and said in several issues over many years how he feels about abortion and a womans right to choose. And so hopefully Tim Walz will be able to pin him down so that all the viewers can see just how he and Donald Trump plan to move forward. Theyve bragged about the political justices they put into office in the past. So well see how j. D. Vance tries to walk back some of his conversations or his statements about ivf, about reproductive freedom. Ill sure Hell Frame it as, you know, this is something about the sanctity of life even though weve seen time and time again republicans supporting the death penalty, failing to support children in schools, in prek, Inhousing And Education programs. I mean the list goes on and on especially, you know, even with meals, as Tim Walz haS Pointed out several times. So christina, what else are you looking for this evening from this debate, whether in terms of Style Or Policy . Well, i think its going to be both, jonathan. So many people are tuning in just to see not necessarily Substance And Policy issues but, you know, who makes them feel better, if you will. We know j. D. Vance can come across very angry even though hes incredibly smart. But Tim Walz i think will be a great framing of some of the policies so many people claim they cant see in Kamala Harris. So thats been the biggest critique of the democratic ticket. What are the policies . Even though if you play the tapes Donald Trump has failed to present any articulate ideas in the past several months if not years. So Tim Walz, i think, is going to reiterate a lot of what Kamala Harris has been staying on the Camp Pain Stump and various interviews just because some people, honestly, jonathan, they cant hear it when it comes out of a womans mouth. They cant hear it when it comes out of a woman of colors mouth. I do think that j. D. Vance will have a showing, but if he doesnt nail the conversation about reproductive justice and a womans right to choose, i think itll be off putting for the rest of the debate. Yeah, thats a really good point. Lastly and briefly at least as of now there is no other debate scheduled. Trump has said he likely Wont Contest with harris again, so this will be it. But traditionally do Vp Debates matter much . Traditionally they dont, but, jonathan, as weve talked time and time again this is not a traditional campaign. Weve never seen a woman of color at the top of the ticket for a major party. Weve never runway for election day. Weve never had an incumbent president essentially say, im going to step aside and put forward my vp. This is not a traditional time. We have so many issues domestically and internationally where were seeing young people care about international issues in ways that we havent really seen since the vietnam war. We seen sort of this isnt going to be a party realignment. We have thirdparty candidates hanging out there, possibly chipping away in key, important states. Some of the issues we thought wed settled, we are now having a conversation again back on the table, especially when it comes to reproductive justice and a womans right to choose. This is not ordinary times, sadly. No, and it hasnt been for a long time. Long time. The Debate Tonight at 9 00 p. M. Eastern. Associate professor christina greer, thank you so much. Up next, Donald Trump is again sowing disinformation. This time, about the Governments Response to Hurricane Helene. What he is falsely claiming about the Recovery Efforts. Then, coming up on Morning Joe, more on tonights Vice President ial debate between Governor Walz and jd vance. Then, Jim Clyburn and Jaime Harrison will join the conversation. Also, Country Music superstars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood will be our guests. Morning joe a few moments away. Away sday. Help Fuel Today with boost high protein, complete nutrition you need, and the flavor you love. So, heres to now. Now available Boost Max Welcome back. In the aftermath after Hurricane Helene, Donald Trump is falsely accusing the biden administration, along with Governor Cooper of North Carolina, of going out of their way to restrict aid to communities affected by the storm. Lets look at what trump had to say when nbcs Garrett Haake questioned him about the post. Are democrats intentionally not getting service to republican areas . Do you have any evidence for that, mr. President . Contributor and author of the book how the right lost its mind, our friend, charlie sykes. As we notd earlier in the show, Governor Kemp said President Biden offered whatever help he needs. Biden angrily denounced trumps lies. This is dangerous stuff, though, because it may convince those impacted by the storm not to seek federal help. It is yet further lies and divisive politics from Donald Trump. Adversity will sometimes, you know, expose what we are made of. In thiS Particular case, this adversity is once again reminding us about the character of Donald Trump. His willingness, hiS Pension for demagoguery, selfserving, and flat out lies. I mean, he has been, you know, engaged in a series of lies. You know, saying Joe Biden didnt talk to the governor when, in fact, he did. Making up the story about not serving republican areas, which is a complete, total lie. Then putting out Social Media posts saying Kamala Harris pictures are fake. Whats interesting, look, part of this is not new at all. That Donald Trump is a serial liar is something weve seen over the last nine years. But increasingly, Donald Trump is just making stuff up. You know, not even shading the truth or exaggerating, but just absolute fabrication. Its really a sign of how, you know, egregious dishonesty is. His lies have evolved and gotten worse. Also, there will be a lot of lies discussed tonight in the debate between Senator Vance and Governor Walz. One, in particular, would be about, id assume, springfield, ohio, and the false claim that haitian immigrants are eating pets, a Lie Spread by jd vance. How do you think this goes down tonight . I am interested to see how cbs handles factchecking, whether or not theyve been browbeaten into factchecking for the various candidates. Itll be an interesting test. Again, this is also such a revealing lie because the lie has been debunked. Its been challenged by the republican governor of ohio repeatedly. Yet, the Trump Vance Campaign continues to push it. This is just a reminder of the degree to which they are addicted to these online memes and narratives, and how unshakable they are in pushing them, even when they have been exposed as lies. This is something, a pattern that i think we need to keep in mind, especially as we go up to the election. Its going to be interesting to see how these two men handle this and how the moderators handle it. By the way, i think it is going to be an interesting debate. You have two men polar opposites, yet they have the same audience. Theyre both appealing to white, working class voters. This is obviously one of the things, not just white working class voters, but working class voters. Itll be interesting to see how they frame all of this. Were getting reports that Tim Walz is nervous. You know, when he was selected, he told Kamala Harris that he was not an experienced debater. Theres a lot of unknowns about this debate, but i do think the question now, how will they handle the lies . Will this be another forum for misinformation . Yeah, e thats a great point. Usually Vp Debates dont matter much. There are exceptions, but they tend not to. This one feels like it might, though, for all the reasons you laid out, and also simply because things are so close. In an election where margins are razor thin, maybe something like tonight does break through. Thats exactly right. This is 2024. We have had two of the most consequential president ial debates in american political history. They completely transformed the race. Yes, they rarely make a difference. The most decisive Vp Debate i can remember was lloyd Benson And Dan quayle. Yet, that made no difference whatsoever. But to your point, there are a lot of voters who are still just tuning in and who are going to be hearing this for the first time. So, again, dont discount this. Also, dont overhype it. At least for now, we do not expect another trump harris debate. Tonight could be the last word. Msnbc Contributor Charlie sykes, thank you, as always. Thank you for getting up Way Too Early with us on this Tuesday Morning to all of you. Morning joe starts right now. Live picture just before 6 00 in the morning. The united states capitol.
