Transcripts For MSNBC The Beat With Ari Melber 20240928

Another week of shows. We are grateful. The Beat Withari Melber starts right now. Ill tell you one quick thing. Its Veep Night. Our first ever Veep Night because we have Julia Louisdreyfus. Amazing. Ill Run Upstairs and watch. I hope you do. I hope you have a great weekend. Ill see you, nicole. You too, have a great show. Thank you. Welcome to the show. Julia louisdreyfus makes her debut tonight. The reason she is here is that she is, as you may have heard, a big Kamala Harris supporter. She was out at the dnc with the democratic governors. Shes hosting a big, big colbert, Larry David, Jason Alexander, Veep Costar Event for costars this weekend. Thats one of the many things shes doing. Why is she doing it . How can you see it . All of that is what she will tell us in a couple minutes. We begin with a busy day on the campaign. 39 days until november 5th. Tonight we can tell you that over half the country has voting available. I have told you how we are living through different times, even if we still have the old terminology. People say election day. I say it sometimes. Its a holdover. This is election Month Or Month and a half. 26 states now allowing some kind of early voting. Whether that be by mail. As soon as you get a ballot, you can mail it back at the time of your choosing or even some sort of early voting underway. That might be good for whichever candidate has the momentum now. Democrats increasingly think it is Kamala Harris. She arrived in arizona where shes doing a record with visit to spotlight immigration. Shes expected to go after trump as shes been doing on different policy issues across the week. Since becoming the nominee, shes been also trying to do a time of political jiu jitsu. Everybody knows that trump has thought immigration is his issue. Hes thought that all the way back from 16 when he talked about a wall that if you check, never got built. She is trying to turn the issue against him. Well, first of all, we do have a broken Immigration System and it needs to be fixed. I went after transnational gangs, Drug Cartels and Human Traffickers that came into our country illegally. Im the only person in this race who actually served a Border State as Attorney General to enforce our laws. We can create a Path Way to citizenship and secure our border. He killed a bill that would have been a solution because he wants to run on a problem. Now what do americans think . It is a tale with kind of two sides to it. On the one hand, Kamala Harris still trails trump by a lot on an issue that matters to many americans, and especially in those Border States. You can see he has a 21point edge. On the other hand, democrats were running in those states and around the country with the nominee recently, the current president , who trails trump by far more. So by strict political math, the new nominee is doing better than the old one but still trails republicans. Now, i can tell you that the Harris Walz Cochair was just with us and heres what he told us on this issue. Immigration, this is pretty striking. There are so many people who are critical of Donald Trump On Immigration. If you remember what it was like, my question for you is about the politics here. Right now, trump is still 20 more trusted On Immigration than her. Why is that . How do you change that . I would say two things. Every day the Vice President has been in this race, she has beaten him on every day shes been in this race. Shes moved ahead and closed the gaps and she will do it On Immigration. We negotiated a Border Bill. The toughest Border Bill that has ever been negotiated. The only reason that bill failed was because Donald Trump wanted to use that as a political wedge. He put himself again ahead of the Safety And Security of the people. And the more you tell that story, the more people will go, look, we can have safe and tough borders and we can also be a nation that has a good legal immigration plan. We have to get that done. So thats what were hearing from the very top of the harris campaign. Meanwhile, on foreign policy issues, former President Trump met with zelenskyy in new York Right after harris held her meeting at the White House. And i mentioned this in our coverage this week. In contrast, i want to show you tonight, its striking. You live in america or youre watching the news, you are familiar with all these debates about platforming and how much should you show different people, Donald Trump and some of his now convicted aides have been caught lying. Some of them caught in defamation schemes. Theres always a question of how much do you want to show that and how thoughtfully should you do it . Ive told you that weve tried to really be journalistic. So we can factcheck. When sources are on, we factcheck in realtime. What im about to show you, theres a reason for it. Its not just a factcheck thing. It is a who do you want with the nuclear Codes Thing . The war in ukraine is one of the most significant international issues around. And while Donald Trump says hes been president and hes walked the walk and talked the talk, Take A Look at how he actually sounds, what hes actually saying, when hes dealing with not only these issues on the Campaign Trail but with the leader of wartorn ukraine and all the deaths and all the difficulty that country is going through, and contrast that to what Vice President harris is doing when shes been in similar scenarios. The contrast is worth seeing. Ive been proud to stand with ukraine. President trump did nothing wrong. My support is unwavering. You said it loud and clear. I will work to ensure ukraine prevail in this war. And really ended, essentially, ended the impeachment hoax. We cant compare two visions for how to deal with thatter with a because Donald Trump didnt even pretend to talking about much about the war or the gravity of the situation. Even standing next to the leader of ukraine. He ran it back six years to his own politics with some misinformation and claims about his own political and domestic impeachment which you may recall involved very credible evidence with witnesses including his aides to get a Hoax Investigation of the bidens going. He said that both Russia And Ukraine should get some sort of fair deal out of the war and you have all of his attacks on nato to boot. Thats one contrast. In the campaign, i can tell you there is a focus on the Running Mate for Donald Trump, j. D. Vance. Both Vance And Walz have a spotlight on them. Trump is refusing any other debate so thats coming tuesday. A lot of attention on both of them. More scrutiny on vance because the Washington Post has unearthed what were private messages that he sent in 2020. So this is him and his views writing in 2020 when he said trump has so thoroughly failed to deliver on economic populism, i think he will probably lose to biden in 2020 which he did. If you go back one more cycle, before vance thought trump would get power, he was even bolder, famously calling his now top of the ticket Running Mate reprehensible and, quote, cultural heroin. He has tried to distance himself as a person interested in politics. He said that was all before trump became president. So the 2020 talk here, while not as strong as the heroin lingo, shows that well into the end of the first term of Donald Trump, he still viewed him on policy, on substance, on economics, as a failure. You can compare vances wellknown and established attacks on trump to the Way Harris and biden get along as vp. Just today, President Biden announced record job growth. From the beginning, the president has been very direct and clear about our perspective. And i can think of no one more committed to achieving our collective goals than president Joe Biden. President biden set an ambitious goal. Todays numbers reflect the point that President Biden has made many times. Americas economy is strong. Whats the message to iran in. Dont. As President Biden said, just dont. Exactly. One word. Pretty straightforward. One ticket has had unity, which has now even involved the succession of Vice President harris coming to the forward. What democrats call bidens selfless and heroic act. Tell other Ticket Cant keep it straight whether they even agree that Donald Trump is a good president or should be president. It depends how far back you go on what j. D. Vance has said. Whats going on in the polling . How do we make sense of it . I told you we are very careful and precise. As you remember in past election cycles where the polling didnt come true, a lot of it wasnt there to begin with. A lot of these on social media, ill show you. This let me finish this point. Before i show you the favorability which is worthwhile, ill show you the national polling you hear about on social media, it doesnt even correspond to not a election that will happen, right . You can see Hillary Clinton is up by a couple points but we use the electoral college. If you want a temperature, the favorability, well put that back up for you. The temperature is good news. There is momentum for harris as her favorability has surged. You see something that has happened recently. Whether you look at it as an effective campaign. Voters who hadnt thought about her much. Shes gotten a lot more attention and been on the debate stage. Whatever you attribute it to, this is solid. Elon musk talked about it. It is the problem of her favorability. Thats since july. Harris, though, is not taking anything for granted when you go to the states that will decide this thing, we have evidence that shows why her campaign is targeting the Blue Wall. She has spent now 136 Million on ads there, tv and radio, focusing on the Blue Wall of the rust belt. Pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin. Thats more than some of the other states that were by some of them part of the biden winning coalition that you see on the right side. Harris also directing all of her time on the ground which matters because you reach voters in person and you drive local mead coverage. So Harris And Walz rallies, you probably caught some of them. Theyre usually in the rust states. Michigan, a priority at 5. When i told you Julia Louisdreyfus is coming up, she will be in wisconsin with some other stars backing Harris And Walz this weekend. A lot of attention on the Blue Wall that failed for hillary, that health for joe, that Kamala Harris sees as her key in turning the momentum that i showed you into the right statewinning coalition. If you have the majority of votes in this country, that doesnt mean you become president. One of the many weird things about this democracy in the united states. How does this all work . Well hear from someone who has run for the democratic party. My special guest on a big Veep Night here when were back in 60 seconds. N were back in 60 seconds. Good to go off the grid. Ill talk fast. We love you. Youre here for us. We booked you. We made this choice. For anyone watching, yes, julia is next. I think thats fair to say. I cautioned about the polling, howard, because both things can be true. You can be surging, you can be popular, you can even have more votes in the country. But it does come back to those states. When you see the harris numbers, explain it to us. I didnt see arizona on there. Theres another state i think we can win. What i see is what i thought i saw when she got the nomination. Were now very much in play in georgia and North Carolina where we werent before. And of course, then the core states that you talked about, pennsylvania and the two midwestern states. I think i would rather be us than them right now. But theres a lot of work to do and 39 days is a long time in politics. Lots to do still. Yeah. I mentioned the total vote because theres no other democracy where you have to constantly balance between what the people choose and what some other arbitrary very ancient system will allot. We try to do both here. I have new polling, governor, when you ask people, should we do this by democracy, its not close. Partisan issues are close. The Trumpharris Decision is close. But look at this. 58 of people in gallup this month prefer a Democracy Vote which they call the popular vote. Only 40 , electoral college. Should americans care about trying to change that structural inequity . We have to change it. Our foundational Electoral System was affected very much by slavery. This was an effort by the small states, and the Slave States to make sure they didnt lose their influence in the compromises that were in the design of the constitution and so forth. So we have two problems. We have a constitution that was built around the notion of slavery and we have a corrupt supreme court, which has already elected one president , or selected one president , george w. Bush, by improper means, and which has also made some outrageous, recently, some outrageous claims that i think most of the constitution people would turn over in their grave if they ever saw it. This crackpot rightwing theory about the immunity of the president s being able to do whatever they please. We need fundamental restructuring to keep our democracy. We dont have a functional court system. As one of the justices coined the phrase, a bunch of political hacks. She was trying to claim they werent political hacks but they are political hacks in the majority. Two of them are clearly corrupt. So we have a big, Beat Withari Melber starts right now. Ill tell you one quick thing. Its Veep Night. Our first ever Veep Night because we have Julia Louisdreyfus. Amazing. Ill Run Upstairs and watch. I hope you do. Com Hire President Joe Biden did something truly, literally, historically unusual this year. He exited a president ial race after winning the nomination, during the general election campaign, famously clearing the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to step up. We lived through it. We went through it. It was still a move so unprecedented, bold and dramatic, that many people, political writers and journalists observed it sounded more like a Plot Twist dreamt up by hollywood than something that would really happen. In a way, it was. Quite recently, the hbo hit Show Veep which ive been mentioning to you tonight actually had such a twist. A sitting president who happened to be a male stepping aside during the campaign and his veep who happened to be a woman stepping up. Now, in that case, the Veep Character became president immediately and the fictional president fully resigned. Gary . Yeah. Im going to be president. Of course you are. Theres always hope, maam. We have plenty of hope in this world. No, no. I mean, potus is going to resign. And im about to become president of america. That kind of joy has spread for at least many democrats and people who oppose trump since Kamala Harris did become the nominee this year. While that Emmywinning Show has long been a hit, we can report for you that after harris stepped up this year, the Hbo Streaming views for veep didnt just increase or double, they quadrupled. Maybe it shows art can predict life in certain ways and life likes to Take A Look back at the art and the culture. And veep also confronted and satirized all the absurdity, the cruelty, and the unfairness in American Politics including the specific, unyielding pressures against women on gender politics. You could say as a woman i believe no, no, no. I cant identify myself as a woman. People cant know that. Men hate that. And women who hate women hate that. Which i believe is most women. How about giving a little thanks to the women like me who built the ladder that you used to get up on to your soap box. How about for once in your life, you stop whining, you stop complaining, and just man up you heard it there. Even within the argument against that kind of sexism youre left with the sexist patriarchal language that suffises english. We would think especially for Women In Politics, and thats not just our observation. There are many Women In Politics who have said that including the eight Women Leaders who are governors who spoke with Julia Louisdreyfus at the dnc this year. Shes a big supporter and shes back this weekend convening a performance of that very episode i just mentioned where the veep steps up as the potus steps aside. And shes doing it in this Special Wisconsin Democratic event with some other stars. Her costars from Veep And Stephen colbert and Jason Alexander, it makes it a pretty special night for any fan of that whole Veep Seinfeld Universe as well as democrats. The event draws attention to these themes and it will be a fundraiser in that key bluewall state. You can see there on pretty beautiful promotional materials complete with the Cheese Head Hat there. Wisconsin is one of the top four or five most important states for Kamala Harris. How is dreyfuss preparing for this political performance . What does she make of the Plot Twists in this very real Campaign Season . Well, we will ask Julia Louisdreyfus who brings her veep cred to join us right here after this break. Here after this break. But who passed them to her . It sounds like a compliment but its true. She won the prestigious mark twain prize. And as we were discussing a little earlier, everyone knows her from the hit series veep. Shes also an snl alum. Did you know that . If you want to go back to something we love around here, of course, an essential and beloved figure in seinfeld, one of The Greatest Hits of all time. Shes also long advocates on many causes important to her, everybody gauged in democratic politics, emceed in 2020, and this year at the dnc she led fittingly a panel of democratic Women Governors. Now shes at work in wisconsin. Julia louisdreyfus, thank you for joining me tonight. Thank you for having me. Yeah. Im excited to let people know about this event that were having on sunday at 7 00 p. M. Central. So figure that out for your time zone. Well do an actual Veep Reunion Slash Table Read of that very episode that you referred to, the crate episode, episode 9 of season 3, and well, were going to read it as a cast with some special guest additions, as a matter of fact. Weve got, we have Larry David joining us, believe it or not. I strongarmed him into doing that. And he is happily being a part, as well as Stephen Colbert and Jason Alexander and kevin smith. So its turning into quite the shindig. Its a huge shindig. And it captures a thing weve seen this cycle that we dont see every cycle. Happiness, joy, culture, something that you create and were interested in around here, so lets show a little bit of the crate episode, one of the classics, and then you can tell us why you picked this episode and what people might glean from it this weekend. Lets Take A Look. Okay. So, so, as weird as this may seem, were still running a campaign. Oh may god, right. So somebody has to be here. Obviously, i have to go with you because im apply campaign manager. I want to talk to you. And you have to come with me. Thats what all the chicks say. And mike, i need you. Yes, you do. And obviously, i need to come with you. I have no soul. And gary . I need you to stay. Tell us about this choice and what a Table Read is. Oh, okay, sure. Well, we chose this particular episode because once President Biden very heroically decided to step down as candidate and Kamala Harris became the candidate for the democrats, this particular episode was sort of, i dont know, is memed a verb . I dont know. It was being memed everywhere. And in fact, veep itself on hbo, the viewership of veep went up some insane number. Like 365 . In veep, which is crazy, in veep, i play a very unhappy Vice President , and at a certain point in the run of the show, i have the opportunity to run for president. Now, i do want to say one thing about the character that i play on veep. On veep, i play a very, shall we say, almost narsistic sociopathic, Mega Maniacal Type of person. I am not a Kamala Harris type. I am possibly much more like someone from the other party whose name i shall not even utter. So, however, we take great fun, the entire run of veep was all about Poking Fun at the politics of politics, and sort of behind the curtain. Thats what were doing in this particular for the whole see my Character Sort of get what she wants and then what she does with it. I love that you bring up memes. This is not a Table Read, as you know. This is just a news interview. But youre a Meme Madam is also a thing from veep. And memes have played a big role and sometimes memes are jokes or theyre negative. Theyre dunking on someone. We see a lot of young people really surround Kamala Harris as this sort of digital excitement and a meme army, theyre calling it sometimes. Wow weve pulled that scene and some of your memes, madam. So lets look at that as well. This is a different episode where your character who is not really like Kamala Harris at all, the interest in veep seems to look at the absurdity of politics and all these things. Look at the meme moment. I came here to tell that you youre a meme maam. Speak up. An internet phenomenon. There are photo shopped versions of this. With the declaration of independence, the 2004 tsunami. Its just a meme maam. Not a may not maam. Sometimes they blow up and become a Super Meme like downfall. What did you say . When we did that scene, the whole idea of memes was sort of a new thing. Wasnt like it is today. I mean, where its probably actually in the dictionary for all i know. So we thought we would just have fun with it. And of course, i played a character had a is not particularly current, and so we sort of drove that home a lot to make her seem as square as humans possible. And so, but wasnt i cant remember what year it was. That was maybe like we shot that in i dont know. 12 . 11 . Something like that. So memes were like a new deal. So it sort of made sense that she would think he was just speaking jibberish to her. Well, thats interesting. I didnt recall how much a Throwback It was. It speaks to how the art in the show sometimes does channel, doesnt only channel, it predicts it. Heres are the two memes. Ill just read them out. Theyre already calling you black wednesday, your aide is telling you. And your character says, jesus, its only wednesday. Who hasnt felt like that. And then political one is who would win . Your character selina meyers, napping, i believe, at the u. N. , or the real veep on top of it. And i wonder if you would like to deal with that. That the show deals with real dynamics. Youre advocating for a Reallife Veep now that is so different from your character. In my show, i played someone who, listen, its difficult to be a woman in politics, period. I mean, evidence, the fact that there are less Women In Politics in the real positions of leadership. And i think theres a, i think that we made fun of that. We made fun of that fact in this sort of upside down way, making the show. I played a character who was a woman but who also hated being a woman and didnt want to define herself as a woman because she thought it wouldnt be an asset. She didnt want to call attention to that fact. We were turning it Inside Out and back on to itself. But i think that the more women we have in government, the better government might be, might be led. Its interesting. I had this experience recently where i led a panel on, with eight of the female democratic governors, i should say, the eight democratic governors. And it was a remarkable experience to have a conversation on stage with them because there was a camaraderie in place that was familiar to me but also unfamiliar in a setting like this. I thought, wow, this is lovely, how, people are not necessarily competing with one another. Theyre listening and talking to each other. And i think our country could use a lot more of that. Its such an important point you raise. A lot of our viewers, i suspect, saw some of that. We have it on the screen right now. We also pulled just a short clip from it. Since you brought it up, lets Take A Look. Okay. We are very honored to have eight highly intelligent, highly capable Women Leaders for the 21st century with us, or what j. D. Vance might call a coven of semi men strating witches. Yeah. It is a huge advantage to be underestimated in any debate in any way you show up. Im curious, given the Role Youve really stepped into, what did it may not to these other Women Governors to have you mixing that, your humor, your art, you say more with a joke than you can say any other way. Yeah. Because they are constantly navigating being the leader for all and being told to raise above everything, but facing discrimination, sexism, double standards, withering constant scrutiny as women with their looks, their status, the Family Relationships in ways that men are not. Youre being told to rise above while not being treated at all equal and being treated as less than. Well, i mean, what are you going to do about it . I think making fun of it is a very good step. It points out the absurdity of the situation. And i think can drive home a point in a way that has teeth. And i was happy to lend my sort of Skill Set to that arena. Im not a politician. Im not an expert on various issues that were up against today. But i do know, i do feel strongly about who our leaders should be as an american citizen, and i would really like it if the discourse could become kinder and more effective. And i think that that will be the case with Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in office. Because i think they are people who are for the people. They are not, they are not trying to line their own pockets and just get power for powers sake. And i should, i would be repolice if i didnt also mention that as women, our rights are under attack, a womans rate to autonomy over her own body is obviously a huge issue that im hoping will drive people to the polls and theyll vote. Obviously, Kamala Harris is for a womans right to chaz, as is Tim Walz, as is tammy baldwin. So im here to stand for that and for what is good and true for all people. Yeah. And i dont know how much you want to get into it or not today. Your call. You did share your Health Care battles. Yeah. And the issue of womens Health Care, womens choice, which you just alluded to, in reading, i read a lot of people felt it was inspiring and important the way you were able to share your journey and your most recent film, people to know you to be so funny. Your most recent Film Deal with Mortality And End of life issues. If you would care to share, we are that fits into advocacy that youre doing because this is so real to peoples lives. Ill just say that im a big believer in Health Care for all. And im a member of a union, a proud member of a union and i have health insurance. For that im very grateful. I cannot imagine having had the Health Scare that i had. I had cancer seven, eight, seven years ago now, and not having Health Care coverage is just about as terrifying as anything i can imagine. And i really, im concerned about having trump in office because i fear that hes open to cutting social security. Hes open to Cutting Medicare benefits. And not and against, really, fundamentally, supporting peoples health. The citizens of the united states and their health. And Kamala Harris is all for expanding Health Care for the citizens of the united states and god love her for it, its so fundamental. Its hard to even put into words, its so fundamental. Thank you for sharing your time and thoughts with us and joining us. As weve said throughout the broadcast, you have this interesting Table Read. And the wisconsin democratic fundraiser, one of the many interesting things youve done on the Campaign Trail so everyone can tune in to that. Its this sunday night. Everybody, please join the fun. It will be an absolute gas. So that thats some of what is going on in politics. We turn back to an important legal update. Jack smith is barreling forward on that case. In a new filing this week, he wants to publicize, to release to the public, materials about that Coup Evidence and indictment. That would include Grand Jury testimony, interviews with Chief Witnesses in the case, top White House officials, and even former Vice President pence. We covered earlier in the hour how democrats have made an issue of Pence And Truch not being on great terms. Well, this goes into things we might not even know about what pence told federal investigators about what trump did and asked him to do leading up to jan 6. Smith argues this is in public interest. He filed a new indictment that narrowed charges. Trump is no longer charged with the Doj Interference Plank of those plots. That is because Jack Smith reading the supreme Court Ruling thinks that the court would find that the kind of official act that you can no longer prosecute a former president for. But a bunch of other stuff, Jack Smith thinks its fair game. Donald trumps team has the means and ability to fight against the release of this information. They previously claimed that even discussing this, even having the open court hearings about it is unfair to Donald Trump politically. The judge has rejected those kinds of argues so far. Another reminder of how Donald Trumps efforts to steal the last election are still ricocheting, and again, if he loses, this is a case waiting for him on the other side of november.
