Signing off, that does it for us. Today, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump laid out in a set of speeches. The Stump Speech he always gives. We are going to continue to watch. We carried this economic speech in its entirety for almost an hourandahalf yesterday. We are told the rest of his speech will echo what we heard yesterday. Basically saying. For years now since he was defeated by President Biden in 2020, and forced to leave the white house, trumps economic message has been the same. It has been a message of doom and gloom. Now it is centered around the idea the biden administration ruined the american economy. But that idea is getting less and less believable. The economy is doing really badly. The third straight closed. The S P 500 also closing at all time highs. No Vice President in history has done more damage to the united States Economy than Kamala Harris. The dow is up 67. The nasdaq up 43. S p 500 up seven and a quarter. Extending into further record territory. Kamala harris is a one woman economic recking ball. That will drive our country into a depression like in 1929. Let the balloons release. The Blue Chips make history for the fourth straight day. Trumps economic pitch is built on the premise the u. S. Economy is a disaster. But that is simply not the case. And it is becoming harder and harder for the Trump Campaign to pretend it is. This weekend, trumps running Mate Jd Vance went to a Grocery Store in pennsylvania to talk about the price of eggs. A series of awkward interactions with customers. Jd vances Chip Malfunctions when he is forced to interact with Human Beings in everyday settings. Vance claimed the cost of a dozen eggs had skyrocketed to 4 a dozen even though right behind him, literally, you can see multiple cartons of eggs on sale for 2. 99 a dozen. Dont get me wrong, inflation is still a real issue. It has come down considerably since Peak Summer of 2022. It is down to 2. 5 . A three year low. And many americans know that. Because most americans buy their own eggs and know what they cost. Thats the underlying issue with the broader trump stance narrative. It is not based on anything. His vision for what he would do is so disastrous, trumpS Pitch is essentially a combo of tariffs and Tax Cuts. That is so bad, even the deeply conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board, even they are not buying it. Donald trump is giving u. S. Companies a reason to think Kamala Harris might be better for their business. He is making tariffs his highest priority and that wont help the economy if he wins. To hear trump tell it he will cut taxes left and right and replace the revenue that would have been gained from the taxes with massive tariffs. Of anywhere between 10 to 200 on all imported consumer goods. Thats the plan. If it sounds weird to you, thats because the math doesnt work. Trumps own Alma Mater found that trumps system would add almost 6 Trillion to the national debt. And those prices from the massive 200 tariff . They would be passed directly onto the consumer. The american ones. The Center For American Progress found trumpS Plan would cost the typical american family somewhere between 2,500 and 3,900 more just to buy the same stuff they are buying now. In poll after poll, both nationally and in the Swing States that will decide this election, american voters say their number one priority is the economy. That presents Vice President harris with a very real opportunity. The Washington Post compiled Polling Averages from when Donald Trump was running against Joe Biden. Trump led biden on the economy by 12 points but now trump is only ahead of Kamala Harris by six points. She cut that gap in half. So it would seem that at least some people are listening to what trump is saying on the economy and listening to What Harris has to say about the economy and they are turning toward harris. Now dont get me wrong. Six points is still six points. And that is why today while trump was giving his economic pitch in north carolina, harris was in pennsylvania making her pitch. And while a lot of the substance of that pitch was based on Policy Proposals we have heard from harris before, 25,000 down Payment Assistance to first time home buyers, increasing a small start up Business Tax Credit to 50,000, increasing the child Tax Credit to 6,000 for the first year of a childs life. While the meat of her pitch remains similar, the way she haS Presented those proposals felt designed to appeal to the very specific voters she very much still needs to win over. The cost of living in america is still just too high. You know it and i know it. Look. I am a capitalist. I believe in free and fair markets. For Donald Trump, our economy works best if it works for those who own the big skyscrapers. Not those who actually build them. Not those who wire them. Not those who mop the floors. Well, i have a very different vision. Joining me now is connecticut senator Chris Murphy who is on the Ballot Running for a third term alongside the Harris Walz Ticket this november. In addition to having math on her side, which is no small thing, there is also the reality that she has to combat the fact she is an incumbent and also running on the idea of change which is important to american voters. I want to play a little sound from Jd Vance tonight. He is responding to harris economic address today. Lets take a listen. Lets dispense with this idea that Kamala Harris is going to fix the very problem she caused. Kamala harris is why we have Sky High inflation. What is the appropriate strategy for democrats on that . That is the only rejoiner you really get from the trump team. If she was going to do all this stuff, why hasnt she done it yet . Yeah. Listen. I mean, she has it right. Donald trump cares only about himself and his maralago friends. We know that because he was in power. And what happened when Donald Trump was in power . His only domestic accomplishment was a massive Tax Cut for himself and his corporate friends. The economy was in ruins when he left. Unemployment was skyrocketing. People were out of work. Of course in the middle of a pandemic that was mismanaged by Donald Trump. And we are living every day in a economy getting better. Inflation is coming down, more people are at work and we are rebuilding industrieS People thought were dead like the Microchip Industry that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have restarted. You have to hammer home the contrast over and over again. People know it, they believe it. They know Donald Trump only cares about himself. That his only accomplishment was a massive Tax Cut. Kamala harris has to be bold. Every single Campaign Stop of talking to people about what she is going to do. Invest in the middle class. As you said at the outset of this show, when the american people listen to these two messages are increasingly coming to the conclusion that Kamala Harris is for them. And Donald Trump is for just him. And his maralago cronies. I spoke to a few undecided Union Voters. And what is, among the things that was remarkable about that trip was the degree to which against all odds, all the things you just reminded us of, Donald Trump still in their imagination is better on the economy. I want to play this sound. For everybody to hear from one of the people Donald Trump has entranced. How well he has shepherded the american economy. Lets take a listen. Can you talk to me a little bit about what in particular he said that has appealed to you . The economy. The economy was the best it has been in a long time under him. Immigration was under control for the most part. Obviously, you are still going to have some. But for the most part it was far more under control than what it is right now. Those are the changes i would like to see. We will set aside the immigration piece. Just the economy piece. I understand why Kamala Harris is making economic speeches. Sitting down with our colleague stephanie ruhle. She has to make the case. But how do you reach that guy . He doesnt think about covid or Donald Trumps mismanagement of the crisis. Doesnt think about anything other than inflation. Thats the case to be made . We do live in a shirts and skins world today. There are many voters who maybe come to Donald Trump through cultural issues. Through hiS Position on choice or immigration. Some voters do want that wall and dont want immigrants and decide to endorse every single one of hiS Positions without a lot of deep analysis. But, the thing that Donald Trump i think did well in his first campaign was identify the way the global economy has screwed the american worker. There are a lot of folks who remember the fact that Donald Trump was talking about china when a lot of other people werent. As it turned out, he did nothing to rebuild industry. He helped companies out source more work. Kamala harris had a specific plan to reindustrialize the united states and bring jobs back from china. But you have to recognize that we got it wrong for a long time. I think if you want to be honest with the american people, the american people want you to be honest with them. You have to level with them that republicans and democrats made a bad bet on globalization. And admit that failure. And chart the plan on how you are going to solve the problem and i think there are a lot of people out there that are not always convinced that democrats understand how badly things went wrong. So being clear about the mistakes we have made allows you to authentically communicate the real solutions that somebody like Kamala Harris has to correct for those mistakes. Donald trump invokes his Tariff Solution every third word on the stump. Do you think that is a potential weak point for harris to exploit . He is talking about slapping John Deere if they move to mexico. With 200 tariff. That is a catastrophically bad idea on multiple levels and i wonder how you think Vice President harris and democrats should talk about it. It iS Pretty simple. You dont have to get into the weeds of tariff policy. HiS Plan is really simple. A massive Tax Cut for him and his friends. A massive Tax Increase on everybody else. Why . Because all that Donald Trump cares about is himself. He will sell Anybody And Everybody out in order to help himself so his economic plan is to screw you as a means to help himself. I just think that is a simple accurate and winning Message Juxtaposed against Kamala Harris plans which is to raise taxes on the very wealthy. That was the overwhelming response i got from young male Union Voters in michigan. When i asked them how they were going to vote. They get more news from social media. These are the undecided. The unhappily committed and uncertain voters who can make the difference in this tight president ial election. They are challenging old perceptions about how identity affects voting. That Rivetting Story fits in with my own reporting. Thank you for being here. When biden there was someone who said i dont want either one of them. You are make ago distinction here. You are saying they are undecided or unhappily committed and describe the choice ahead as the lesser of two evils. How is that different . So the reason they dont hate both candidates is they dont know enough about Kamala Harris to hate her. Your segment portrayed it perfectly. These are young people, they tend to be more black, more hispanic than the overall Voting Population and they are very disgruntled with the way things are going. Concerned about run away inflation. The price of Health Care. The fact they cant buy a home because of interest rates. And they are not just obsessive about politics. They are not watching this show every night. They are definitely not. They are probably never watching this show and they are probably never watching the New York Times. They exist in a different universe of information. To call It Information implies there is an interest in current events. It makes when i came out of that meeting i thought it will be really hard for the Harris Campaign in particular to disabuse these young men of the notion that Donald Trump was better on the economy and make the argument. Just to get the policy out there. What a lot of these voters say in addition to the lesser of two Evils Line which by the way is something i heard from more than one person i interviewed. And these are people that were selected for new york timeS Polling at random. So this is not, this isnt like, we sat a bunch of people down. Something like that. These were people randomly selected in a poll. And i called a lot of them back. They felt better about the trump years. Inflation was a lot lower and they dont spend a lot of time thinking about the Count Trover City he creates. Look what happened after the debate and the ridiculous line about eating cats and dogs. They may have heard of that but it is not in their News Feed constantly. So, if it is, it is something they kind of tune out as noise. I found the same thing talking with the folks i spoke with. And not only are they not swayed by trumps inflammatory rhetoric, a lot of them recognize that Kamala Harris has a better temperament. Is more of a byeS Position to be president. But that is not moving them into harris corner. They are Human Beings full of contradictions. We contain multitudes. So you can say i think Kamala Harris acts more president ial. And at the same time, say you know, i think that Donald Trump needs to shut his mouth and doesnt represent what i want to see in a president. And they do think that he would be more respected by world leaders. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact she is a woman. Some of the voters i spoke with were skeptical that the country would receive having a Feel President in a positive way. I dont know if that is true. There have been plenty of female Chief Executives Around The World. They have gotten there first, but there is a big Question Mark over who she is and what she stands for still. Because remember, she has only been a candidate for two months. Usually by thiS Point, we know these people for two years. She hasnt had that luxury. I just feel like there are deeper breaks that im not sure more time would necessarily heal. This idea of masculinity and that democrats are antimale. It is very hard for a woman to argue that she iS Pro man given the fact she is trying to be the first Woman President in american history. I wonder if that on its own is enough to make it a Steep Cline for undecided who are mostly men. Young men. It is a good point and i
