He said his choice has been clear and he invoked Vice President harris in standing with him. We know there are conversations at a high level between the u. S. And ukrainians that speak to a Potential Disconnect here, and i think the event thats on President Bidens schedule later today speaks to that. Hes going to be hosting other G7 Leaders where theyre going to make a joint declaration about the Reconstruction And Rebuilding of ukraine. That title alone suggests a hope for an End Point that comes sooner rather than later. But i think as interesting as it was to hear from President Zelenskyy to the broader u. N. Today talking about the continued threats that ukraine faces, the warning against a frozen truce rather than a lasting peace, his commence were much more blunt yesterday to a smaller gathering, the u. N. Security council, when he talked about the need not just for plans, we need action, he said is needed. He said that russia can only be stopped by force. And so President Zelenskyy will be attending this meeting later today. This will be the first opportunity he may have to discuss with President Biden one of the major asks that ukraine has been asking of the west, not just the united states, but the ability to use some of those weapons that have been provided to ukraine to strike deeper into russian territory. This Meeting Today will come ahead of a more formal sitdown that President Biden will host President Zelenskyy at the White House tomorrow. President zelenskyy will also be meeting with Vice President harris. But, ana, to the political dynamic at home, interesting our team covering President Trump reporting this morning that he will no longer be meeting with President Zelenskyy. Thats a meeting thats not on his schedule, a significant development as weve heard trump on the Campaign Trail really criticizing President Zelenskyy, talking about how every time he comes to the u. Igor, coming back to what we just heard from zelenskyy, he really stressed the nuclear threat. What is zelenskyy hoping to achieve with his Speech Today and what do you see as his hurdle . First of all, i have to point out the fact that the nuclear threat is real. Its not a game, its not a strategy. Its a real threat. The case with the Zaporizhzhia Power Plant that happened in 2022 is a real case. And god forbid, if one of the missiles goes astray, it will be chernobyl 2. 0. The threat is clear and President Zelenskyy is trying to get the world to wake up to the fact were on the brink of a nuclear tragedy is nobody is paying attention. There was more to his speech. First of all, there was a comment that i think was a jab at President Trump, a direct jab, because nobel peace prize, that was what President Trump was interested in back in 2019 when President Zelenskyy had his first runin with him. And, also, i think the most important message was about peace, the real just peace. Because the quickest way to peace is actually losing the war. But losing the war means losing a sovereign nation, losing 40 odd million europeans to a dictator. So what President Zelenskyy is trying to get to here is to get the world to wake up to the fact that we need not just a frozen conflict in two weeks or so. And i think to that point he emphasized its not just about ukraine. Ambassador mcfaul, zelenskyy echoed something weve heard from President Biden, that vladimir Putin Wont Stop at just ukraine. Here is that section of the peace. No just peace without ukraine, and i think every leader, every country, that supports us in this, that understands us, that sees how russia, a country more than 20 times larger than ukraine in territory, still wants even more land, more land, which is insane. And is seizing it Day By day, while wanting to destroy its neighbor. Ambassador, what do you think was his Target Audience Today . Mr. Trump, mr. Vance, on the Campaign Trail, theyve been talking very flippantly, naively, about im just going to call up these two guys and tell them they have to have peace, and when you look at what they mean by that, they mean telling ukrainians to give up their territory. Land for peace. And President Zelenskyy is making Crystal Clear that hes not interested in that kind of peace. First and foremost because he doesnt want to give territory to an imperial invader and i thought that framing was also important at the United Nations to remind the world this is imperialism, but, secondly, been there, done that. Putin took territory in 2014 and he didnt stop. And i think President Zelenskyy wants to remind people that that is not a just peace and its also not a permanent peace by just trying to force ukraine to give territory to putin. That Wont Lead to a sustained peace. Ambassador taylor, the word he kept coming back to was peace and hes been talking about a Victory Plan lately hes planning to lay out in maybe some of those closeddoor meetings. But he didnt talk to a Victory Plan today. What do you make of that . Ana, he told many of us that his first description of the Victory Plan was going to be to President Biden, and he has a short opportunity to do that today and a longer opportunity to do that tomorrow. I think he will hear a general outline of the Victory Plan, which he has been clear about. Its how to put pressure on the russians to realize that theyre not going to win this war. To realize theyre not going to be able to take over ukraine. To realize that ukraine will continue to exist because the americans will not give up, the ukrainians will not give up, the europeans will not give up. Thats his Victory Plan. Its a demonstration, its got military components, it has economic components, diplomatic components. We heard some of those diplomatic Components Today in his tenpoint Peace Plan which he described in his speech just now. So that is the Victory Plan, and it is to put pressure on the russians to realize theyre not going to win this war. And we all talked about how Donald Trump sees this conflict very differently. Here he was speaking about u. S. Aid to ukraine just yesterday. Watch. Every time zelenskyy comes to the united states, he walks away with 100 billion. I think hes the greatest salesman on earth. But were stuck in that war unless im president. Ill get it done. Ill get it negotiated, ill get out. Weve got to get out. Biden says, we will not leave until we win. What happens if they win . Thats what they do, they fight wars. Somebody told me the other day, they beat hitler, they beat napoleon. Thats what they do, they fight. Igor, whats your reaction to that . Well, its kind of difficult to react to that with a straight face. Ill do my best. First of all, he said, what if we lose this war. So the fact that President Trump is proposing to lose this war to putin, the question that i have, as a member of the Western Civilization is why . Whats his motivation to propose to lose to putin . Ill leave that question open. Ambassador, how strong is the resolve of the other leaders listening to that speech to keep spending money, to keep Sending Resources to help ukraine, especially as they hear trump basically saying, if i win, the ukraine Aid Era is over . I think the resolve is strong within the nato alliance, especially those closest to the war. You saw some very strong speeches at the United Nations supporting the war and explaining why this idea of pulling out will not lead to peace. I want to emphasize that. Trump has a mythical argument here that if i put pressure on zelenskyy to give this territory to putin, theres going to be Peace In europe. Thats not true. Weve been there, weve done that. Remember, this war started in 2014, not 2022. And i want to remind your listeners, President Trump was president for four years during that war, he did nothing to stop that war. Why should anybody believe that hell be more successful this second time around . But the Bottom Line is, there wont be peace unless the russian soldiers are stopped, just as President Zelenskyy said. So if you want peace, we to give them the means to stop the russian invasion. Ambassador taylor, to that idea of what those means are, we know zelenskyy is making this Big Push for allies to provide these longrange missiles so that he can hit further into russia. Do you think that allies and western nations will back that . Absolutely, ana. I think they may have already decided to back that. We will hear sometime soon what the nations have decided. I think that they will decide, as they have in the past every time theyve had to make a decision like this, whether its a Weapons System or the ability to shoot into russia, 10, 15 kilometers, theyve always had a hard time, taken the time to debate, too much time to debate, but then theyve made the right decision. I believe, yes, they will make the decision to allow ukrainians to use longrange weapons at military targets inside russia, and that will be part of this Peace Plan.
