Welcome back to The Weekend. We are just 45 days away from the Election Date and Vice President harris has gone on offense on reproductive freedom to during an event in Georgia Harris Focus on reallife dangers of restricting abortion access. This is a Healthcare Crisis in Donald Trump is the architect. He brags about overturning Roe V wade. In his own words quote, i did it and i am proud to have done it. He is proud. This crisis made possible by a Trump Staff Supreme Court. This Movember Voters will weigh in for the first president ial election since two years ago. Joining us now is our professional institutional law from georgetown. Also with us msnbc legal analyst, fresh off her sold out show at the 92 y with her Friend And Sisterin law podcast. Welcome to you both. Welcome, ladies. Michelle, i want to start with you and help us set some kind of text on how this debate, we all know since the dog decision, how politically things have changed. Given the more recent and doubling and tripling down that we have seen from many on the right, it is not just about abortion, it is about how women are the Root Cause of the problem. We need to control you all. Mark robinson, you got pregnant because you did not keep your skirt down. You cannot make it up. You cannot make it up yet these narratives coming from the right are so far removed from the arc of the abortion storyline. What does that tell you about this moment in the eyes of voters, especially young women who really seem to have something to say about this . Thank you for having me back on the show. Look, cruelty is the point behind all of this. I have been saying this is the new jane crow. Lets keep in Mind Mississippi brought forward the challenge before the Supreme Court. This is a mississippi that came from. The mississippi that placed lakh women in slavery, that denied them the opportunity to vote, that restricted them and their children from walking in parks, laying in swimming pools, even being able to play checkers and chess and it was actually written into law. These times are chilling and horrific. As the Vice President was mentioning deaths are resulting from this atmosphere. To your point, this is taking pages a playbook from back pre slavery. When you look at arizona in 1864 abortion laws, not before arizona became a state but importantly it is before slavery was abolished in this country. We must understand and connect the old threat to the new. What was old is new again. We fail ourselves and our democracy if we do not get that. Some people have said this has been a 50 Republican Campaign that is wrong. Roe v wade was a 72 decision, five of those justices were republican appointed. Ch of tho appointed. This is new, extreme and dangerous. I want you to weigh in, jill , and everything that michelle just shared. Also, part of what is complicated we have talked about it, people feel it is something far away and removed from their lives and what has happened to women it is a reminder that it is real. Take A Listen to what her Mom And Sister had to say during the unite for america live stream. I want you all to know, amber was not a statistic. She was loved by a family, a strong family we would have done whatever to get my baby, our baby the help that she needed. I am beyond hurt. I feel guilty. I wish i could have helped her. We had no idea. We trusted them to take care of her. They just let her die because of some stupid abortion ban. If you watch that you think to yourself, that could be me, my daughter, my Best Friend and then all of a sudden this becomes very real. You have it exactly correct and i think the messaging is so important. Also, for michael i want to say, i think young men are realizing the risk this is posting. It is messaging that is important to make it apply to everybody in their life today. I think Vice President harris did it in terms of talking about the schoolchildren and picks her day being evacuated. It brings it to real life to every day to things that are not just a legal problem, it isnt just the Supreme Court, it is how it is affecting. I think this kid from georgia was one of the most dramatic and moving things i have seen on this issue. Michelle, bringing into focus , as the Amber Thurman Family did so well. It really kind of stops you in your tracks, you have a piece talking about clarifying the Health Exceptions written by, noting quote, republican legislators have rejected small efforts to expand and clarify Health Exceptions, even in georgia which is one of the nations highest rates of Maternal Mortality and where black women are three times more likely to die from Pregnancy Related Complications then white women. That storyline is a consistent narrative to what you were just saying, how that old is new. Those breads are still being applied together with so many women in a way that we are seeing now that is killing them. That is absolutely right we have seen an increase in infant mortality, infant morbidity. The u. S. Led all of the industrial world and Maternal Mortality. We rank about 55th in the world. This is only exacerbated. To be clear, these legislators knew what was coming. In louisiana, there are doctors who more than once, there have been two or three hearings were doctors have come forward who said we have had eightyearold patients who are and pregnant. Do you really expect for an eightyearold girl to go through Pregnancy Labor and delivery and become a mother at nine years old . The testimony i read it i have seen it and you have lawmakers turning a blind, cold i to it. There are Little Girls in the united states going into Elementary Schools as parents, as mothers and to jills point, it implicates boys too, who are these girls . Some are adult people, but we are talking boys who are 12, 13 years old becoming fathers. What sense does this make . It is cruel to her children, cruel to our society and cruel to people who have to endure this. As we sit here talking about morality and the severity, you have Donald Trump untruths social saying in all caps, you will no longer be thinking about abortion because it is now where it always has to be with the state and a vote with the people. The states are going to restrict it. It is up to the federal government. Let me just say in terms of trump and bands, this is their attitude towards women, toward postmenopausal women whose only purpose in life is to babysit grandchildren and if they did not have children they are useless to begin with because they are a childless cat lady, i am a childless dog lady. I think we need to look at the overall attitude toward women as equal partners, have equal rights, we have to get in a plug for that because we are not equal yet. The fact that the Supreme Court and republican candidates for president and Vice President can treat us that way means that we really need more protection. That idea that alecia just spoke to, leading this Trump Quote saying, its in the states and the states are going to decide if people get to vote, it will be that easy until it is it. It isnt in california, maryland , washington, oregon, New York say, since you give us that power we want to vote a different way and the response from republicans, i think we need a national ban. Which is called for and project 2025, which we should pay attention to, it is that Page Book back to the past. There is something else, michael. Keep in mind voter suppression. It is real in the state of georgia. If you are black you will wait in line 3, four, five, seven hours to cast your vote. Legislation has been passed and no one could give you a cup of water. They cannot give you a sandwich. We have to keep in mind that turning this back to the states is actually giving us a photograph of what was taken from the united states in the 1960s when black people really had to suffer in order to vote. Lets talk about mississippi again where black people had to guess how many bubbles on a bar soap, Jelly Beans in a jar, recite the State Constitution in order to vote. I am sure people say you no longer have to guess how many bubbles on the Soap Or Jelly beans in a jar, what does it mean when last year the ballots are run out and they are not available because they are in a black district and youre trying to vote and there are no more ballots for you to vote. This kind of is what can be expected this november. Michelle good One And Jill winebanks, thank you for the conversation. Up next, trump is ready to dispute the election results five days before November 5th. He is ready. Early voting will start in georgia in 24 days, just yesterday the pro trump republican majority of the State Election Board voted to overhaul its election process, 24 days before the election now, Poll Workers in georgia will be required to Hand Count. You heard me right, Hand Count the millions of ballots across the state it is a move that will take time, cost and incredible amount of money and according to georges on republican Secretary Of State, pave the way for chaos. It is the latest sign that margo republicans are trying to swing the election in Trumps Favor and i will tell you why because they are scared. It is an effort that will most certainly stretch well beyond election day. Folks, buckle up and get ready because it is serious what is happening at georgia. Joining us now is the founder of democracy mark, help us understand what is happening in georgia. That is my question, what the heck is happening in georgia . What is happening in georgia is what Donald Trump predicted. He went to a political rally and in the middle of the political rally, where he is usually incoherent talking about windmills and birds and fictitious murderers and sharks and electric roots, he managed to name three members of the State Election Board offthe cuff, to shout at them out. One of them seemed to be in the audience. He said, when he gave that Shout Out that they were Pit Bulls and they would help his victory. It is obvious that has been his plan and these three Maga Board members have been hard at work passing new rules that they do not have the authority to pass to try to help him. Speaking of those new rules, you had georgia Security General say that this exceeds the Board Statutory Authority quote, review the proposed rules reveal several issues including some of the proposed rules, if passed very likely exceed the Board Statutory Authority and in some instances appeared to conflict with the statutes governing the conduct of elections. Help us understand what this means in the context of rulemaking in this case. It is not a law, it is not something that can get overturned or the government gets to veto. How does this change the game in terms of trying to undo this . Is there a way to undo this . For the nonlawyers out there, when a conservative republican, which the Attorney General of georgia is says that other republicans appear to conflict with the statute that means that they conflict with the statute. They are saying it in a polite literalistic terms that these rules are invalid. The State Board of elections does not have the power to come up with rules that are in conflict with the law. Their job is to fill in gaps around the small technical matters on how elections are done. It is not trying to rewrite the election as this was done here. These rules i suspect will be struck down. Help me understand something with this is from nbcnews A List of people who are accused of serving as fake electors in 2020, at least 14 are back, five in pennsylvania, six in the michigan. How is that possible . It is possible because we have learned nothing from history. The fact is after January 6, rather than coming to a national consensus what had happened was simply beyond the pale. It set people out of bounds for further involvement in life. That started with Donald Trump and it extended down to a large number of people including members of congress, including the current speaker of the house. Also, as you say these fake electors. Rather than that being the national consensus, too many people particularly in the republican party were willing to make a deal with those insurrectionist and fake electors and the others who were involved in trying to overturn the outcome of the election and now we are paying the price of that. We are back in a polite society and the republican party are considered normal political actors within the major political parties. We have seen in the past, history has taught us that when you do that you pay a price in the long run and i fear that is where we are. We are there also because this is possible because people did not heed the warning from some of us who were saying, you need to pay attention in the off year elections to what is happening. These individuals are running these local board of elections and now here we are facing the reality that if you want to stabilize The System, what the Trump Maga World learned is that do not attack it from the outside deconstructed from the inside. That is what is playing out. What is the recourse available at this point . You and your legal team have been phenomenal is standing in the Courthouse Door waiting to come in and bring in cases and make the noise, what else should we be looking for to help deal with what is going to come starting right now with early voting and certainly will come to a head on November 5th . We all have a role to play. I am proud of the work that i and my lawyers at my Law Firm do every day, to fight for Voting Rights in court. I am proud of the job that hundreds of lawyers around the country working for the democratic party, working for other Nonprofit Organizations do every Day And Fighting for democracy. This is not just lawyers preventing the worst of the worst from happening. Every person who is listening to this, every person who believes in free and fair elections and a better future for our country will make sure they are registered to vote, they will check and make sure they are registered. They will have a plan and know what the rules are and they will vote but i think if we all do that and we participate in this process and we do not let the cynics win, Donald Trump wants you to believe that all is lost. They want voters to believe there is no point in it is pretty because The System is rigged. We will fight that to make sure it doesnt happen but we need to make sure everyone is registered and everyone votes we want to talk about another fear of another January 6th and much more. Other Januar 6th and much more. What makes it possible is unmatched Connectivity And 5g solutions from tmobile for business. Tmobile connects 100,000 Delta Airlines employees. Democrats who have spent much of the president ial campaign reminding americans what happened on January 620 21. On Capitol Hill some are voicing concerns about January 6, 2025. As the Investigative Counsel Jacob wrote, the attack on the capital was not a single isolated event but the movement is still fighting. Jacob joins us now. David, we were talking a little bit before we came back on about what this January 6th scenario looks like in 2025. Very different from 2021. I think it is going to be one of the things where you are going to see more explosiveness around the country as opposed to the building behind you. How do you see the dangers forming and taking shape right now ahead of what may come next year . Thank you for having me. I totally agree i think what we are seeing is the potential for a lot of violence in State Capital communities around the country, counties try to certify the result. I think individuals who witnessed January 6 understand there will be a lot more security this time around, there is a national Security Event designated for January 6th in d. C. But what we are seeing across the states is that we will have people be encouraged to go to the County Seat of government, to the state seats of Government And Protest there and potentially become violent there. I think that is important when you look at what is happening in springfield, ohio, we are having even if we are not going to do the right thing it is not just the election results it is things like immigration and migration and other issues that are the cherry on the top. That is correct. The form could look a little different. This is another scenario that is nagging top speaker democrats, may find himself in a position that he could stop the counting of electoral votes and possibly for the election to the house under the Competition Provision under the amendment. Talk about that. Lets do everything we can to make sure that is the next speaker and there is no insurrection like Mike Johnson being in that chair. I have been a early Alarm Ringer about Mike Johnson. Mike johnson was, other than Donald Trump the single most responsible federal elected official for what we saw on January 6th. He led an effort by house republicans to throw out the results in four states in the u. S. Supreme court and then on the floor of the house on January 6th. I do not take Mike Johnson lightly. I will say this, congress enacted a new law, the electoral count reform act, it makes it much harder for a Mike Johnson to do the kinds of things that others might be inclined to do. It is also helpful that Kamala Harris as a Vice President will preside over the joint session. I do not discount worries of Mike Johnson because i take him and Donald Trump literally and seriously. I have a lot of confidence that Hakeem Jeffries will be in the speaker chair. Number two, if not, the new law will hopefully protect democracy. Jacob, to your point and zeroing back in on george a little bit, it is sort of a lapel, if you will, to what you refer to. I want to play some from Stacey Abrams talking about the georgia Election Board and why it is bad for democracy. More than 3000 counties, they have to certify those ballots, they then had to get it to the Secretary Of State and then certify that the the electors can cast their ballots by november 17. If that does not happen that whole sequence gets delayed, there is no remedy except for it to happen when the u. S. Congress convenes the following year. Wait for it, congress then gets to decide if you can so dissent and so concern, you can delay the process enough that you can then claim conspiracy and then claim. That is the plan they have. This is a wellfunded plan that is playing out across the battleground state. That goes to the heart of what you are saying, that strategy has moved outside of washington and is now sort of hand to hand, if you will, among the states in those Battleground States especially. What is really important to remember from that clip is what we found in the committee is the reason January 6th was almost a moment of national catastrophe for us was not just because of the schemes that Donald Trump and others were trying to effectuate in the states, it is because of the possibility of Mob Violence that threatened congress and the Vice President and others in the states. That delay that she was talking about opens up, it opens up the possibility that extremists could come in ginned up by hatred, immigrant hatred, hatred of lgbtq people that has been soaked for years and then having that hatred harnessed and then being told the reason they need to hate and they need to act out is because the election is stolen from them and people are trying to plan society with something that is to them mathematical to what they believe america should be. What we see is the interweaving of this legal scheme to delay the Haitian Hasten of results and is certain population with the possibility of extremist vigilante activity. That is really dangerous and it is more dangerous when you consider that this will be happening in smaller locations, much more vulnerable locations to bomb threats, smallscale Extremist Activity where the capital might be much better protected. Ouch. You think about how this plays out but it is not just a headshake or, it is a bellringer for sure to get out and overwhelm The System with our votes. That is how you begin to attack a lot of this. Thank you both very much for being a part of the conversation. He launched a new crypto currently currency startup. It was not a Campaign Event but a business announcement, 50 days before the election. After recently saying that crypto was a scam, Donald Trump owns more than 1 Million in crypto. Trump viewed the presidency as a Get Rich Scheme and he views this campaign as a Get Rich Scheme. All of those schemes are detailed in the new book, Lucky Loser. Suzanne craig and Russ Buettner are pulitzer prize or reporters and their review of that book how Donald Trump squandered his Fathers Fortune and created the illusion of Success Announcer i love when we have Authors Onset because they give me the opportunity to activate my inner. Congratulations to you both. I love it. He has been lucky and he lost a lot. He was born into a very wealthy family, his first stroke of luck, that alone brought him 400 Million and the amount of money he got along the way, his second amazing stroke of luck is getting on the apprentice. People were surprised. It is one thing when you have a rich dad, you inherit a lot of money, for Mark Brunet, there is a Television Host how much could he be making . He struck this incredible deal with Mark Brunet not only is he pay to host the show but he gets the product money, thats when his mother had a corporate name and there is a payment that would go along with that, he got hundreds of millions of dollars from doing that at some of the licensing deals, it was almost like a second inheritance. I want to play a little sound for you, my friend, from way back. This is Donald Trump when he was first running for president in 2016. Lets take A Listen to what the man had to say it has not been easy for me. It has not been easy. I started off in brooklyn, my father gave me a small loan of 1 Million and i came to manhattan and i had to pay him back and i had to pay him back with interest. Donald was E Sinche was a young man that his father was a small timer. He said that to make his own accomplishments seemed more heroic. He has been saying he made that into billions of dollars which was not really true for years if ever. The repeating of that and the fact that it is not easy to check on the operations of a small privately held business, there is no corporate board to check no public reporting, people repeated it for decades without any way to check it. Now through the years, on television and newspapers it has had an effect that really has lasted and the apprentice come as sue said, escalated, amplified that claim and made him look so superpowerful, so super accomplished that he has created an impression that lives to this day. The loan from his father was structured that he never gives the money back. It is alone and then turn into an investment and written off. People can read about it in the book. We talked to experts who thought that was illegal. His life is incredible. Really the effective thing that Donald Trump did is he bought he has lost money but he has this expensive yards you have pictures of him on it, he has helicopters, that is from these shows like lifestyles from the rich and famous with robin leach. You said he hit the jackpot with the apprentice but i thought you were going with he hit the jackpot that allowed him to create himself as a businessman and what he might have lacked in a way of is this he built in a way of a brand for the television show. I think that is supercharged with he had been trying to do. Keep in mind after lifestyles of the rich and famous, he did have a lot of Business Failures that i think really hurt him. When Mark Brunet comes along and cast him in the show, they looked at actual really rich people, Warren Buffett was one of them. The producers decided that Warren Buffett and Jack Welsh are actually dizzy and they are not really able to watch the show. Warren buffett was probably not as as a Donald Trump was. Those guys are really busy. Lets go to a guy who is not real busy, Donald Trump. Here is the thing that i find the most intriguing. A lot of it was such a fake. From the book. From the book we talked about trump lying about Construction Progress be Donald Trump kept the truth to himself. He did not have things underway because he did not have the money, he directed his Construction Supervisor to hire every piece of Earthmoving Machinery that he could find. The day the Holiday Board visited dozens of bulldozers and backhoes pushed mounds of earth around the 2. 6 Acre Site in an elaborate ruse with no purpose other than to full his new business partner. That, Ladies And Gentlemen sums up Donald Trump. It is all fake, fake, fake. The fact that this is his Story Line and his ultimate legacy and yet it has this veneer that he is a successful businessman, he is the tough guy, he is all of this, it is all fake. It is worse than smoke and mirrors. I could not have said it better. That was impressive. I think we see that especially in the latter part of his life, that was a time of his early part of his life, after the Apprentice Money came in and tens of millions of dollars came in he tried to create largescale businesses. He built the tower in chicago with Hotel Rooms and apartments, what he did not tell the world is he declared worthless on his federal tax return. It was such a failure it had no value to him at all. He spent lives of dollars, to had millions of dollars remodeling the old Post Office in washington, d. C. Into a hotel. That lost money every year he opened it and a couple years ago he had to sell the thing. He is getting all this money that he can use to look wealthy and he is creating differences from that. He is having to support the businesses with his entertainment money. That is the illusion that you are getting that is smoke and mirrors. A lot of our viewers they why are we still talking about Donald Trump . Part of it is his success is built upon lies and part of our job is to debunk those lies especially given the consequences that those have. I love where you end the book we write as much as the illusion of success is the ultimate creation of trumps first 70 years, the illusion of his persecution may be his final masterpiece. Right. This is a theme throughout his life. He has been a victim over and over. We see it coming back right when he started working, the language he uses in all of the cases were somebody comes after him and questions that he is a victim. There is a lot of themes running through the book. We do not go into the white house, but we go back 100 years and we tell the sweeping narrative, at The End of it you know the guy will be in the white house. The other thing you do is create a Call Eric with the american Directorate Electorate and that he is aggrieved and they are to and that is why he ought to be there. He is like they are coming up to me they are coming after you. Thank you both. The new book is called Lucky Loser it is available on amazon. A lot more for The Weekend. [music playing] we will stop on this truth of Donald Trump, a fraud and a person who created an illusion of success and the fact that it has been absently sticky. The fact that as we sit here the elections will largely be determined on what voters think of the economy. There is some sense of him on the part of voters that he is their candidate. You really drill it down you talk about policies and other things in your life it is Kamala Harris. She is still contending with yet another version of a big ally. It is. It is amazing to me that someone can look at the absolute failures of the man and think that somehow hes good at what he does. You go back to the decade in which Donald Trump supposedly had his best success. He had recorded more than 1. 1 Billion in Business Losses on his tax returns. Five bankruptcies. People look at a small Business Owner who goes bankrupt and they are like, we are not doing business with them again. This guy has five and they are like, hes the greatest thing for the economy. The fact that Wall Street played this game with him for as long as they did is also another fascinating part in how he punk, he punks people into believing he is something he is not that he is the ultimate in fake news. He is the ultimate in fake Leadership And Business sense. I am stunned that people allow themselves to be duped the way that they are giving this Man Loan after loan knowing he did not pay the last one back. This reminds me of something that former first Lady Michelle Obama said during her speech at the Democratic National Convention which is, the rest of us dont have the luxury of this is not how Business And Finance work for anyone else. He is in a rarefied position and the fact that he continues to be recorded and seen as someone who is successful and upfront to everyone who is out there hustling, working hard, doing the right thing, and may not be seeing the same results. And then lying about it. He got a 400 Million loan which was converted into an investment so they could write it off to start his business.
