Welcome back to The Weekend. We are just 45 days away from the Election Date and Vice President harris has gone on offense on reproductive freedom to during an event in Georgia Harris Focus on reallife dangers of restricting abortion access. This is a Healthcare Crisis in Donald Trump is the architect. He brags about overturning Roe V wade. In his own words quote, i did it and i am proud to have done it. He is proud. This crisis made possible by a Trump StaffSupreme Court. This Movember Voters will weigh in for the first president ial election since two years ago. Joining us now is our professional institutional law from georgetown. Also with us msnbc legal analyst, fresh off her sold out show at the 92 y with her Friend And Sisterin law podcast. Welcome to you both. Welcome, ladies. Michelle, i want to start with you and help us set some kind of text on how this debate, we all know since the dog decision, how politically things have changed. Given the more recent and doubling and tripling down that we have seen from many on the right, it is not just about abortion, it is about how women are the Root Cause of the problem. We need to control you all. Mark robinson, you got pregnant because you did not keep your skirt down. You cannot make it up. You cannot make it up yet these narratives coming from the right are so far removed from the arc of the abortion storyline. What does that tell you about this moment in the eyes of voters, especially young women who really seem to have something to say about this . Thank you for having me back on the show. Look, cruelty is the point behind all of this. I have been saying this is the new jane crow. Lets keep in Mind Mississippi brought forward the challenge before the Supreme Court. This is a mississippi that came from. The mississippi that placed lakh women in slavery, that denied them the opportunity to vote, that restricted them and their children from walking in parks, laying in swimming pools, even being able to play checkers and chess and it was actually written into law. These times are chilling and horrific. As the Vice President was mentioning deaths are resulting from this atmosphere. To your point, this is taking pages a playbook from back pre slavery. When you look at arizona in 1864 abortion laws, not before arizona became a state but importantly it is before slavery was abolished in this country. We must understand and connect the old threat to the new. What was old is new again. We fail ourselves and our democracy if we do not get that. Some people have said this has been a 50 Republican Campaign that is wrong. Roe v wade was a 72 decision, five of those justices were republican appointed. Ch of tho appointed. This is new, extreme and dangerous. I want you to weigh in, jill , and everything that michelle just shared. Also, part of what is complicated we have talked about it, people feel it is something far away and removed from their lives and what has happened to women it is a reminder that it is real. Take A Listen to what her Mom And Sister had to say during the unite for america live stream. I want you all to know, amber was not a statistic. She was loved by a family, a strong family we would have done whatever to get my baby, our baby the help that she needed. I am beyond hurt. I feel guilty. I wish i could have helped her. We had no idea. We trusted them to take care of her. They just let her die because of some stupid abortion ban. If you watch that you think to yourself, that could be me, my daughter, my Best Friend and then all of a sudden this becomes very real. You have it exactly correct and i think the messaging is so important. Also, for michael i want to say, i think young men are realizing the risk this is posting. It is messaging that is important to make it apply to everybody in their life today. I think Vice President harris did it in terms of talking about the schoolchildren and picks her day being evacuated. It brings it to real life to every day to things that are not just a legal problem, it isnt just the Supreme Court, it is how it is affecting. I think this kid from georgia was one of the most dramatic and moving things i have seen on this issue. Michelle, bringing into focus , as the Amber Thurman Family did so well. It really kind of stops you in your tracks, you have a piece talking about clarifying the Health Exceptions written by, noting quote, republican legislators have rejected small efforts to expand and clarify Health Exceptions, even in georgia which is one of the nations highest rates of Maternal Mortality and where black women are three times more likely to die from Pregnancy Related Complications then white women. That storyline is a consistent narrative to what you were just saying, how that old is new. Those breads are still being applied together with so many women in a way that we are seeing now that is killing them. That is absolutely right we have seen an increase in infant mortality, infant morbidity. The u. S. Led all of the industrial world and Maternal Mortality. We rank about 55th in the world. This is only exacerbated. To be clear, these legislators knew what was coming. In louisiana, there are doctors who more than once, there have been two or three hearings were doctors have come forward who said we have had eightyearold patients who are and pregnant. Do you really expect for an eightyearold girl to go through Pregnancy Labor and delivery and become a mother at nine years old . The testimony i read it i have seen it and you have lawmakers turning a blind, cold i to it. There are Little Girls in the united states going into Elementary Schools as parents, as mothers and to jills point, it implicates boys too, who are these girls . Some are adult people, but we are talking boys who are 12, 13 years old becoming fathers. What sense does this make . It is cruel to her children, cruel to our society and cruel to people who have to endure this. As we sit here talking about morality and the severity, you have Donald Trump untruths social saying in all caps, you will no longer be thinking about abortion because it is now where it always has to be with the state and a vote with the people. The states are going to restrict it. It is up to the federal government. Let me just say in terms of trump and bands, this is their attitude towards women, toward postmenopausal women whose only purpose in life is to babysit grandchildren and if they did not have children they are useless to begin with because they are a childless cat lady, i am a childless dog lady. I think we need to look at the overall attitude toward women as equal partners, have equal rights, we have to get in a plug for that because we are not equal yet. The fact that the Supreme Court and republican candidates for president and Vice President can treat us that way means that we really need more protection. That idea that alecia just spoke to, leading this Trump Quote saying, its in the states and the states are going to decide if people get to vote, it will be that easy until it is it. It isnt in california, maryland , washington, oregon, New York say, since you give us that power we want to vote a different way and the response from republicans, i think we need a national ban. Which is called for and project 2025, which we should pay attention to, it is that Page Book back to the past. There is something else, michael. Keep in mind voter suppression. It is real in the state of georgia. If you are black you will wait in line 3, four, five, seven hours to cast your vote. Legislation has been passed and no one could give you a cup of water. They cannot give you a sandwich. We have to keep in mind that turning this back to the states is actually giving us a photograph of what was taken from the united states in the 1960s when black people really had to suffer in order to vote. Lets talk about mississippi again where black people had to guess how many bubbles on a bar soap, Jelly Beans in a jar, recite the State Constitution in order to vote. I am sure people say you no longer have to guess how many bubbles on the Soap Or Jelly beans in a jar, what does it mean when last year the ballots are run out and they are not available because they are in a black district and youre trying to vote and there are no more ballots for you to vote. This kind of is what can be expected this november. Michelle good One And Jill winebanks, thank you for the conversation. Up next, trump is ready to dispute the election results five days before November 5th. He is ready. Early voting will start in georgia in 24 days, just yesterday the pro trump republican majority of the State Election Board voted to overhaul its election process, 24 days before the election now, Poll Workers in georgia will be required to Hand Count. You heard me right, Hand Count the millions of ballots across the state it is a move that will take time, cost and incredible amount of money and according to georges on republican Secretary Of State, pave the way for chaos. It is the latest sign that margo republicans are trying to swing the election in Trumps Favor and i will tell you why because they are scared. It is an effort that will most certainly stretch well beyond election day. Folks, buckle up and get ready because it is serious what is happening at georgia. Joining us now is the founder of democracy mark, help us understand what is happening in georgia. That is my question, what the heck is happening in georgia . What is happening in georgia is what Donald Trump predicted. He went to a political rally and in the middle of the political rally, where he is usually incoherent talking about windmills and birds and fictitious murderers and sharks and electric roots, he managed to name three members of the State Election Board offthe cuff, to shout at them out. One of them seemed to be in the audience. He said, when he gave that Shout Out that they were Pit Bulls and they would help his victory. It is obvious that has been his plan and these three Maga Board members have been hard at work passing new rules that they do not have the authority to pass to try to help him. Speaking of those new rules, you had georgia Security General say that this exceeds the Board Statutory Authority quote, review the proposed rules reveal several issues including some of the proposed rules, if passed very likely exceed the Board Statutory Authority and in some instances appeared to conflict with the statutes governing the conduct of elections. Help us understand what this means in the context of rulemaking in this case. It is not a law, it is not something that can get overturned or the government gets to veto. How does this change the game in terms of trying to undo this . Is there a way to undo this . For the nonlawyers out there, when a conservative republican, which the Attorney General of georgia is says that other republicans appear to conflict with the statute that means that they conflict with the statute. They are saying it in a polite literalistic terms that these rules are invalid. The State Board of elections does not have the power to come up with rules that are in conflict with the law. Their job is to fill in gaps around the small technical matters on how elections are done. It is not trying to rewrite the election as this was done here. These rules i suspect will be struck down. Help me understand something with this is from nbcnews A List of people who are accused of serving as fake electors in 2020, at least 14 are back, five in pennsylvania, six in the michigan. How is that possible . It is possible because we have learned nothing from history. The fact is after January 6, rather than coming to a national consensus what had happened was simply beyond the pale. It set people out of bounds for further involvement in life. That started with Donald Trump and it extended down to a large number of people including members of congress, including the current speaker of the house. Also, as you say these fake electors. Rather than that being the national consensus, too many people particularly in the republican party were willing to make a deal with those insurrectionist and fake electors and the others who were involved in trying to overturn the outcome of the election and now we are paying the price of that. We are back in a polite society and the republican party are considered normal political actors within the major political parties. We have seen in the past, history has taught us that when you do that you pay a price in the long run and i fear that is where we are. We are there also because this is possible because people did not heed the warning from some of us who were saying, you need to pay attention in the off year elections to what is happening. These individuals are running these local board of elections and now here we are facing the reality that if you want to stabilize The System, what the Trump Maga World learned is that do not attack it from the outside deconstructed from the inside. That is what is playing out. What is the recourse available at this point . You and your legal team have been phenomenal is standing in the Courthouse Door waiting to come in and bring in cases and make the noise, what else should we be looking for to help deal with what is going to come starting right now with early voting and certainly will come to a head on November 5th . We all have a role to play. I am proud of the work that i and my lawyers at my Law Firm do every day, to fight for Voting Rights in court.
