Brooklyn, how we doing . When the host and Creative Director of Msnbc Life and we are so excited to welcome you to our very first of soldout fanfocused event. Thank you. This is where you get to meet and greet your favorite msnbc personalities live and in person , and i can let you guys in on a little secret. Steves khakis are just the same as in real life. Over the course of the day, we will give you our take on the state of this crazy election. Are you enjoying it so far . Its only september. All right, lets get this thing kicked off. You may have seen them reporting from the dnc. They are going to tell you what it was like to be there in that electric atmosphere, but first theyre going to dig into what is at stake in november. Please welcome to the stage, the host of the readout, Joy Read and Alex Wagner. Thank you. Add a selfie. So smart. Hello. Thank you all for coming. How amazing is this . Amazing. Thank you, brooklyn. I think we are going to just jump right in because really what we are doing right now is just recreating what happened in the democratic national [ inaudible ] with fewer potato chips, unfortunately. We have no table. If we had chips, the chips would be in our seats. Can we talk about how much fun we had . We had too much fun. At a point i did actually feel bad for everybody in New York. Who here was at the convention, was anyone here at the convention . It was more amazing than i thought anybody thought it would be and we got to be there and soak in the magic with my longtime friends, one of my favorite people in the world and also at msnbc, and we had an endless supply of fried snacks and then Kamala Harris got the nomination, so what could be better than that . The thing that is so interesting as we have had a journey. One of the first shows that i used to go on, on a regular basis, and one of the first people that let me fill in for her, was miss Alex Wagner so we do go back a ways. We seen a lot of elections come and go. Rank this one in terms of the intensity of the vibes and the feelings around it. I think this one holds even more weight because when Barack Obama was running, he was not running against Donald Trump, so there is the trump factor, which is us standing on the precipice of end times, and then there is the kind of candidacy that Barack Obama represented and when Kamala Harris represents, which is the trajectory of american Society And Culture and what it means for us to be whether we are trending more toward a more inclusive and diverse society. I think in the post obama, trump years, a lot of people question mike did Barack Obama come too soon . Was he an aberration . Was it just eight years of us glimpsing prematurely into a future that was a long way off, and Donald Trump seemed to be such a repudiation of the moral arc of the universe bending toward justice. The harris candidacy, i think, represents an affirmation that the path that Obama Sort of opened up for the country might actually be its destiny, and that and so you know, it is not just a democrat might save the country from Donald Trump. It is a democrat who could meaningfully move the ball forward and finally shatter that last glass ceiling, so it is you know, exponentially, the levels of import, the stakes are so incredibly high and i think that has given rise to a joy that is really powerful. It is interesting because think about the trajectory that happened in 2008. You had this incredible thing that happened, a country that was born a slave colony, series of Slave Colonies elect its first black president , a remarkable achievement than four years later is he is re elected and it seemed this inexorable path was toward a woman being president and that got interrupted by Donald Trump and that was a shock to the system that then produces The End of a right that for a lot of women, was unthinkable, right they would never lose. Now that is part of the context of another woman stepping forward, getting the nomination and you know, it is remarkable that the question of whether the country was what President Obama represented or whether it is what trump represented as a live question for a lot of people and increasingly, there is this sense that maybe trump is the aberration and i think that is an important thing but i just think of it maybe. Well see how it goes. If that happens, one of the people who will deserve the most credit is an older white man named Joe Biden. Right . Yeah. By the way, i have to throw this in, because you were there in the Spin Room on the night of the debate. I sure was. The debate that kicked all of this off. At the time, what people were doing in the Spin Room is trying to say i know, its going to be fine. They were spinning as hard as they could. I remembered talking to Gavin Newsom. All the republicans came out. It was like stephen miller, Matt Gaetz and Crystal Acevedo and all the trump people, nobody wanted to talk to them and then Gavin Newsom came out and everyone is like, lets talk to the democrats and see how they are feeling after this. The panic that sat in after the first 10 minutes of the debate was like nothing ive ever witnessed. The phones were blowing up and there were so many questions about biden, about the party, about the country and what has unfolded in the course of the last eight weeks, six weeks. I have no sense of time anymore. Its been 2000 years. Just to talk about the Joe Biden of it all, this man who will be seen potentially as the fulcrum around you know, two black President S, but not only right . So like, he is there and provides a very important role for Obamas Candidacy and his presidency and then as president himself, in the wake of the covered disaster and economic calamity that was largely the fault of Donald Trump and then potentially does something that no one has ever done other than george washington, is to take the power and make sure that the line of succession is clear and final. I mean, the extraordinary nests of those acts will never be forgotten. Absolutely on the thing about it is i liken him to a character in Game Of Thrones who faced Nancy Pelosi, the most powerful woman other than Kamala Harris ever in american history. The most successful and powerful speaker i would argue ever in history, the most successful Speaker And Somebody who you know, its not as if she was the only person. Across the democratic party there was this incredible anxiety she was just willing to say out loud on television so its not as if shes orchestrating everything that happened but she was willing to put yourself out there because of her power and because of the esteem she holds in the party and she said, this is what needs to happen and it was not just her again. Its really important not to say that is just her but when President Biden says all right, im going to accede to the wishes of my party but im going to do the thing that to me in my view confers the most power. Im going to name my successor. Im doing this on my terms and i named this person as my successor. Thats a power move. It is also we just have to contrast the two parties in this moment because as you say it is Nancy Pelosi leading the charge and i think insofar as you have to lead the charge is going to be a difficult position but doing it in the most respectful way i think you can try and do such a thing, the democratic firmament like managing the trips, having to go public sometimes, democratic voters making their wishes known and then when Kamala Harris steps in, rallying around this person with an Enthusiasm And Joy and electricity that none of us could have predicted. It is a party and i say this after cheney announced listen, like you want to see what a high functioning, inclusive, Well Oiled Machine looks like, look at the democratic party. That is one of the things that was so remarkable about the convention. You saw, you know, republican former members of the Trump Administration walking around giving love all over the place. You saw adam kinsinger, people who ideologically disagree, it shows you that you have one political party that is inclusive of everyone. Its prodemocracy. Still to come, jen psaki, Kate Shaw, Ari Melber, Andrew Weissmann , stephanie ruhle, Lawrence Odonnell and of course, Rachel Maddow. donnel course, Rachel Maddow. Professional dancers ok stay connected during your move with the best in home wifi. Easily transfer your services in the xfinity app. Bring on the good stuff. We are back with Joy Taylor and Alex Wagner. Weve got to talk about kamala debbie harris. She has sent to the moment and people want to question her background. Basically she is alex plus me, okay . Youre welcome. Look at this stage, get it in your mind. Our moms noticed. The guys i like we dont care. [ inaudible ] she is asian, too. Dont forget that on your television show. My godmother, theyre out of control. She is a polyglot human being. She is what america is. This is how you build america. It is the immigrants that come in and they come in and they become part of this country. She has stepped up and stepped into this moment in a way that i think a lot of people fail to anticipate because they were not covering her and were not paying attention to her and us two people who did cover her and did pay attention to her it wasnt surprising but lets talk about how they stepped into it. Can we just have an agreement that campaigns dont need to be two years long . Give it to me. Three months undone. I think its like certainly media is a huge part of this. Also, Kamala Harris has grown. Shes able to define herself. She is able to speak with confidence. She is able to laugh and be joyful in a way that is exhilarating. Ive said this before, for women who watch other women have to sacrifice so much of themselves to be national figures. Its just a thrill to watch someone out there who looks like shes having fun, who looks like she is relishing this not solely because of duty, but because she wants to be there and goes and talks to people on the Campaign Trail and enjoys it. That is something that i think her ability to conduct herself with confidence and is this something that is really come to the forefront and lost four years and i think the experience of washington is oh, youre now a swamp creature. The reality is you can learn some things on the job. Maybe having someone who has learned a couple things is a good prerequisite for being president. She would be one of the most experienced figures ever to take office if she were to win the White House. We also have to talk about her running mate. Your first big decision is a president ial candidate is to choose your partner and President Obama, youve got to choose your Road Dog and President Obama chose Joe Biden. He really was one of the most effective vice President S ever. Very smart choice. Lets talk about Coach Walz, you all. First of all, he knows how to order a donut. Maybe just like some grasp of humanity. If you guys have not seen the Jd Vance in the donut shop video, like it is actually we played it on Alex Wagner tonight and people were mad at me. They were like why did you subject me to that. Its worse than a cringe. Its almost as painful as him being on the podcast with the gentleman that said boy its good that you have that indian motherinlaw to nanny your kids. When Jd Vance starts talking about ovulation and menopause, i turn the volume down. But, i will say one wonderful thing there are so many wonderful things about being at the convention but before, you could tell what the mood of the convention speaker, the main speaker is going to be when they bring out the song science, right . Like thank you, joe or we Heart Joe was the sign the first night and then on tuesday . Walz was going to speak. They started bringing a sign that said Coach Walz and like big heads and i was like oh, this is going to be like a Pep Rally because hes the governor of minnesota. They didnt say Governor Walz or Congressman Walz or mr. Wells but it was like Coach Walz. Then you could hear like Marching Bands like returning this and the homecoming. I 100 and by the way when i tell you i think the Minnesota Delegation is still in the arena they were leaving. We were literally leaving. People were cleaning around them and theyre like no, there still party. Were here, were happy. Were like everyones gone and there like we dont care. Theyre still there. Weve got to talk very briefly about the other side because it is been a challenging few weeks, months for trumpet vents. They have had a rough time. They have had a rough time and this is a point will need to discuss with friends and neighbors more because so much of the year was spent talking about Joe Bidens cognitive abilities. If you have listened to Donald Trump, the man is giving rambling, incoherent answers that very much beg the question if he is still playing with a full deck of cards and that part of the conversation im not trying to be a just. My mom is 80 and she could out debate Donald TrumpIn A Heartbeat but i do think if we are concerned about the mental Health And Acuity and cognitive skills of the commander of our armed forces and one of the most powerful leaders in the free world, all republicans should have one of the same conversations democrats have about just how functioning Donald Trumps. I think its even more important have that conversation because you have a group of people from the Heritage Foundation and from his former administration that have already made plans to run the country. Theyve already written it down. Its called Project 2025 and if Donald Trump is not at his full cognitive capacity than one wonders who would be making policy, who would be Making Decisions and the obvious answer is that the readymade playbook is what we would be living under and that playbook is things like getting rid of the department of education, national abortion been, renaming the health and human Services Department the department of life, essentially having a handmade menu. In which Robert F Kennedy junior would be attached to in some fashion. That is the reality of what we are staring down as a democracy. Are we going to have bear carcasses in the White House being served for dinner . Thats how you get a brain warm. I really need someone to tell them thats how the work gets in the brain. Carcasses by the side of the road. Dont eat them. Im not a fan of much of what cheney has done with his life. I think it is so indicative of a party that has shrunk itself, has atrophied to the point that even the staunchest most hard line conservatives in the Capital C Sense of the world feel like they have no place there and that tells you that first of all there are huge questions about her Twoparty System, whether we can go on like this even if trump loses, like what becomes of the republican party, what are its values, what does it mean to have a Twoparty System when one party is not interested in governance at all. And when it is protected by an arcane Electoral College that advances it even when it cannot win majority. We have a problem in an anti participation democracy. And the Supreme Court Run by conservatives. I know we have some legal experts like Chris Hayes and Kate ShawComing Up. Thats a deep tease for later. Coming up, three iconic women take the stage together for the first time. Jen psaki, Senator Claire Mccaskill and Andrea Mitchell are here with their inside take on the state of the race in this final stretch. Ce in this final stretch. Three more of your favorite stars are going to be together on stage right now for the first time ever. Theyre going to give us an inside look at the state of this race in the final stretch. One of them worked at those as a white House Press Secretary for President Biden. One of them won a Senate Seat as a democrat in a place that is very red. And get this, one of them has covered every president ial election since 1972. Please welcome jen psaki, Andrea Mitchell, and claire mccaskill. Thank you. This is such a good crowd. Thank you guys for having us. Let me start with you, claire. Vice president harris obviously would be a historic president on multiple fronts. She does not wear that on her sleeve. She did not wear white the night of her speech. She does not talk often about being the first. What do you think that tells us about her. You know her well. Why is that . I think she understands that to be elected president of the United States, you first have to convince the american public that you are qualified to do the job, that you are capable of doing the job. Some things can be left unsaid. If you lead with that, then it becomes a topic. She doesnt want the topic to be her gender or whether she is black or whether she is south asian or any of that. She wants the conversation to be about what she can do for you. That is what she wants a conversation to be about, and the discipline she is showing about doing that, not going there, you do see a lot of pictures, which is not by accident, where she is doing they call them otrs, when shes out and about she stops for young girls of youve noticed, you see in the media more often shes talking to young girls. That is sending that message without her having to say a word , and a much more effective way to do it but she wants to make sure the american people know she is ready to go Toe To toe with kim jongun. I want to ask you. Youve covered the Clinton Campaign very closely and you covered other prominent female candidates. Is this a sign of progress . Is this a sign of a different strategy . What is the design of . I think it is a sign of progress. Its so exciting to me as someone who broke into a business frankly for i was first the only woman in the newsroom in philadelphia, the big town i started out in, and in this radio newsroom, i only could get a job by working the Night Shift where i wouldnt be seen during the day and i was called copy boy. I was a copy boy, so there is a lot that is changed. In our profession, just look at the women who are leading our networks. Our buses are women, our camera people, editors and my colleagues. The difference in politics has been so profound. I covered Hillary Clinton when she was the First Lady in 1991, so for all those years i was a white House Correspondent and Hillary Clinton, by talking so much about gender perhaps that was not a good tactic for her to emphasize it as much as she did, made it possible for Kamala Harris not to have to talk about that, and the other piece of that is that she was so active after the jobs decision, so she has been the primary advocate against dobbs and for reproductive rights for the administration. That has been one of her signature moves. No question. One of the things ive not won a difficult senate race, nor have i been covering president ial politics since 1972 but when i became the White House the Press Secretary the first day i was so relieved. It was an honor. It was thrilling. I was so relieved in this wonderful woman texted me and said you did great, you did great. One suggestion. You should look like maybe you are wearing some makeup when youre out there and it was not a bad thing and they use this as an example because there are different there are all sorts of pressures on women, right . Are you likable, are you friendly, are you approachable, are you also strong and fierce. Im not going to do the Barbie Monologue but you get my just here. There are also things that are very campaigning is a lot of work on candidates and you have to kind of look at for pictures. I mean, what are the things that people are not aware of their challenging when youre running for a highlevel office as a woman. I think that one of the brilliant things Kamala Harris has done a she is adopted a uniform. Right . I always was jealous because you know, i can decide to i wear a suit like they do, the floppy tire, or can i wear pants all the time, do i need to wear a dress . She just from Day One set its pantsuit, baby. She rocks the pantsuit. This can be pantsuit all day long. I will not be surprised if she turns up in the pantsuit for the inaugural ball. I think she has figured out that if we focus on the things that are irritating to us as women, we take up too much energy. Like have you noticed how much she is embracing loving to cook . Yeah . I mean i love that. You guys mightve noticed i bake. So that is a huge progress because back in the day, if you were a woman candidate, when i first started running eight years ago, you know, i never wouldve done that. When i was running for d. A. In Kansas City i would not even put my children in the picture because i was afraid they would think oh, shes going to be abandoning her children to be the prosecutor and shes probably not tough enough to be the prosecutors a look at the progress we have made. There has been huge progress. We can now cook. We can bake, and we can be commanderinchief all at the same time. Absolutely. Even someone at the pinnacle we have a supreme Court Justice, katanji brown jackson, and i know her from washington. I know her as a clerk at the court. I know her as a judge, now is a supreme Court Justice and she makes this book about the turmoil she felt because her husband was a medical student, she had two small girls. She was just beginning in her job and had to decide whether she could go and pick up the kids at school. We all share that when we have kids whether we are old or young, on gender, we sure that in that is a bond and ive learned that in my profession with reporters, that is unbreakable. If you respond as people and dont feel you have to hide that part of your life. I will tell you, Andrea Mitchell is like the kindest person to other women. She is. Will surprise you at all. It is very true, very true. I want to get to some Audience Questions and i could keep talking into your forever but we have other panels. I want to ask you about October Surprises. It is the things that are unexpected so i want to take you back into the editorial meetings in rooms because by the way, every news organization, every Campaign Plans for all of the possible things that could happen so you see where this is going. Andrea, what are the things is a longtime journalist youre watching for, could happen, may not happen, but over the next 60 days. Just think about the iran hostages and Jimmy Carter and what happened right before his election. The night before the election he was out crisscrossing the country, flew back. I was standing on the south lawn. He had to come back because there was a possibility never going to be released. They were released by iran at 12 01 when Ronald Reagan had just been sworn in. That was the worst possible surprise. There was Access Hollywood. That was a huge surprise a couple of days before the debate in the debate had to be than the Trump Campaign tried to trot out all of these women that had made accusations against Hillarys Husband in the past and see them in the Front Row in the president ial Debate Commission would not let the debate start until they moved them aside. They were there to create that stern a distraction so there were a lot of October Surprises and the fact is this is going to be a close election, everybody, and nobody should make a prediction about this. We could talk about blue walls and 270 and Steve Carnegie is the expert but he knows better than anyone. Ask Hillary Clinton about 11 days before when all of a sudden youre flying to iowa to come up with a new laptop and more emails than the Fbi Director says two days before the election on a Sunday Night he says oh, nevermind, we were wrong. And we saw the polls just go down. When we saw the Access Hollywood tape, it was the same day that the u. S. Government finally put out the statement that russia was behind the hack, so it was the same day which is you forget. Its like oh, this is the same day. Access hollywood, that will not change things. It didnt. Clear, what are you looking out for . Youve run many tough campaigns. What are they red teaming about . If you look at all the things we just discussed, probably they were not discussed ahead of time. Thats why there were surprises, so i dont know that i can Guess What the surprise will be because if i knew what it was that it would be a surprise. I would be telling you guys right now but i will tell you what im holding out for. Im holding out for a Philadelphia Rally where the Warmup Act as Beyonci And Taylor swift. Coming up, Chris Hayes brought a very special guest to join him on stage. You are watching msnbc live, democracy 2024. Are watching ms, democracy 2024. As got our kids . Kidding. Someone has them. So, were going to talk a little bit about the election that is Coming Up in particularly, the legal landscape around it, something you spent a lot of time thinking about it. Youve been sort of practitioner, too. In a previous life you worked a little bit on the campaign and the transition. I wanted to start with a question about how folks are not necessarily legal experts were watching this, what youre looking for in terms of issue spotting. There was a lot of irrigation in the last 2020 election. It was all frivolous and did not amount to anything but what you are looking out for in the legal landscape both now and to election day. I think at the outside outset, margins are everything. We have this idea of a margin of litigation. If an election is close enough in a particular state, negation could turn it into a w. It could change the outcome. We weres. Really having a state within the margin of litigation and 2020 so you had pretty close outcomes in wisconsin, arizona, and georgia but not in a couple hundred votes or even love thousand votes, which might have put us within the margin of litigation, and thus really have thrown into question the outcome in those states so if we have states that are close to the cycle, then i think a lot of the focus will shift to the courts and so we are seeing right now some of the groundwork for some of those potential postelection lawsuits being filed around things like Absentee Ballot Return deadlines, the ability to correct a ballot that has an omission or an error on it because there is a strong presumption if you file a Lawsuit Afterthefact challenging election rules that are in place before the election, thats a Very Steep Hill to climb to succeed so i think that is why we assume some of those lawsuits will be filed now so the likelihood of success and potential impact on the national electoral map really is going to turn on how close the results are in these critical battleground states. Lets stay on that. The notorious Donald TrumpPhone Call to Brad Roethlisberger in georgia. You will remember that. Boo, yes. I i agree with that. Bad call. There is a very funny quote. He goes fellas, i just need 11,000 votes, Come On. Thats a lot of votes like you cant you know, in the case of florida famously in 2000 that margin was 537 votes or something like that. So, the margin really does matter. What you are saying is like if you are in the category of 10,000 votes, even 5000 votes, the litigation is not going to be determinative either way. It is unlikely. It is the margin and what the legal teams look like, in some ways, and this is something i have especially since the cheney announcement, ive really been thinking about this, that there could be this kind of moment of reckoning for the legal profession because we know from here that Donald Trump is said very clearly hes not going to accept any outcomes in which he is not the victor and so he will bring lawsuits to challenge results and states he loses. We know this and how plausible those lawsuits will become i think turns in part on how close the results are but also what kind of team of lawyers is able to assemble and i really do think this is a moment when conservative lawyers, republican lawyers could basically say, you cannot sign on to facilitate an antidemocratic effort, and effort that is just a Power Play in search of a legal theory and that is what it would be, and effort to subvert the results in a state using whatever facially possible legal set of claims you can manufacture but you cannot sign on to that and remain a member in good standing of the legal profession. I actually think that would be a very powerful message. Yes. This is someone who is saying we already have enough folks, we dont need any more votes. He told dr. Phil the other day, why, i dont know, that if jesus counted the votes in california he wouldve won california. I missed this. I did not make that up. So, you know, his contention is that it is impossible for him to lose, and anything that he loses is rigged. The other thing i want to talk about, you brought up Book Review called let the people choose the president , a book for getting rid of the Electoral College, and youve made this point before and youve made it to me in private and also publicly and things youve written for the New York times oped page. There are a bunch of reasons the Electoral College is bad on first principal democratic grounds, on the fact that huge swaths of the country, every voter in wyoming, every voter in california has basically no say over the electoral outcome. That is bad. But, the Rube Goldberg Machine that is the Electoral College is like an attractive nuisance. It is like an uncovered Swimming Pool for Donald Trump to go play in, right . Because it is a complicated machinery, there is all sorts of dates and points of intervention which he tried to exploit less time that are going to be around this next time. Right, so not justice antidemocratic character but the complexity of the Electoral College, the different deadlines that happened in each state and then in congress, each of those is a potential vulnerability and an opportunity for Exportation And Mischief and that is i think the democratic deficits in the Electoral College and some states are big problem but this is a big problem as well and there has been some reform in the Electoral College. The electoral Reform Act somewhat claims that this rickety 1887 statute that governs how we transfer votes into president but there are still opportunities for Exportation And Mischief and i think that is still a huge part of the problem so if you needed another reason to be skeptical of the Electoral College and committed to reform its susceptibility to exportation by bad actors is an important one. This also connects to your first point about the way margins matter, the closest election of our lifetime, which was 2000 national popular vote, Al Gore won by 500,000 votes. He lost florida by 500 votes. Its impossible to imagine a national popular Vote Margin that is 500 votes. Even in a very close race the law of large numbers is going to be Tens Or Hundreds Of Thousands but a defining state could be pennsylvania could come down to 1000 votes so you also are inviting a situation in which the determinative result is within that margin of litigation but if everyone just counted every vote across the nation youre not going to end up in a margin of litigation. And increasingly larger margins. If it comes down to a state like pennsylvania where we are within a couple of thousand votes potentially only because of the Electoral College we could even be in a position in which the courts are all of a sudden going to be deciding who the next president is. That brings us to our first question here, and this comes from jeffrey Level L literal. From the bronx today, which relates to this. Can the Supreme Court overturned the 2024 election of Donald Trump loses . You mentioned Bush Versus gore so there is the president of the Supreme Court deciding the outcome of an election but as we have been talking about, that only really becomes a possibility in which there are results that are close enough that it has some plausibility that was psychic and thrown to question the results in that state and then yes, someone could get the case before the Supreme Court and i think there is reason to be very alarmed about what weve seen from the Supreme Court in the last few years, and what it might do if given the power to outs decide the outcome of a president ial election. Yeah, you dont want to give this Crew A Second Run ItBush V gore. That just seems like a bad idea. This question is from shareefa, in pennsylvania. We hope shes registered to vote. She asked both of us what percentage of the day do you both discuss politics . What would you say . We have a little screen time app that tells us, you know. We should. A fair amount of time. I mean obviously, the vast majority of what we talk about is the logistics of our children. Sports, practices, then maybe the latest Registration Data out of pennsylvania. We do talk about the stuff a lot. Sometimes we talk about in constitutional law you kind of think about high politics and low politics. I would say partisan politics, not much really at all, but like high politics, thinking about the nature of government i mean were not talking about that everyday either but theres a combination of the two but the actual partisan politics, not that much. Low single Digit Percentage of the day. We were on vacation when the announcement came from President Biden that he was going to not pursue the nomination and then endorse Kamala Harris. We did talk about that a little bit on vacation, just a little. It came up. Strike that was it for our afternoon session, but we were just getting started. From Monday Night handoff to Center Stage Brooklyn academy of music in New York city. Here are Rachel Maddow and Lawrence Odonnell. [ cheers and applause ] [ laughter ] hold on. Twirl. No, twirl. Twirl Twirl Twirl me oh god now i twirl you no . [ laughter ] before the night is over you will let me twirl you. That was not in the rehearsal, rachel. [ laughter ] i forgot to go to the rehearsal. I think its obvious to one here, and i think ive said this publicly, my favorite part of the show happens to be the highest rated part of the show. Which is the moment when rachel says good evening to me. [ laughter ] which some of you may have noticed i might enjoy a little too much. But, heres what happened to me. When i run into fans of msnbc on the street or somewhere, first thing they will say to me is my favorite thing about your show is the rachel handoff. [ laughter ] and i get it. Im sure they speak for millions when they say thats. But [ cheers and applause ] but, thanks to twitter there are other views of the handoff. For example Oh No this is important, the timing on this, written at 10 04 p. M. So you can imagine the depth of feeling of this particular tweet. Okay . To me. Okay . I just Cant Watch the handoffs from Rachel Maddow to lawrence. I have to change the channel. I cannot watch rachel being kidnapped for 15 minutes to read i think that side of the audience deserves a fair hearing. My favorite thing is that i have no freaking clue what you are going to say. Ever. Like you know what . There are other shows, and there are other things, my host is going to ask about this thing on the show. That does not happen with me and lawrence. And so it could be me and your mom are talking about what we are going to do for thanksgiving okay, youre coming for thanksgiving to know. It could be this thing you just did. I have a better guest than you Coming Up. It could be this thing that you said in your block which i forgot, because it was 44 minutes ago was interesting that i would like to ask you in Depth Followup questions, and i dont remember what it is, so there is, the one thing to note is do i look frozen in that moment . Because if you are speaking, we have this worked out between us, if i look like i might be paralyzed lawrence knows to keep talking until i come out the other side of the shock and have something to say. Its the issue in your relationship that is not going badly. And so you dont bring it up in therapy. Because, its not broken. And i we dont have time for this on tv, this is all the stuff we dont have time for on tv, i need favor. Im enjoying trouble with my publisher. I am literally years behind on the deadline for my next book which will be my third book, which no one knows, because there is so much distance between the books people forget. The Topic Or Title . There is a title. So you know. When im making my excuses to the publisher about well i got to cover the Trump Trial in the campaign and all that, i know that looking in the background, and they say this out loud every once in a While While is the fact that in the number of years this book has been overdue, you [ laughter ] you have chosen to produce a couple of giant podcasts, or as much work as a book one of them Steven Spielberg is not going to turn into a movie you have a documentary out now. And, youve produced a book or two in the number of years i have delivered nothing, so my favorite is rachel, would you please stop . [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] when you like to do a Book Or Podcast together . We could do that. We are getting somewhere. [ laughter ] if you cant stop, because i have a suspicion you cant, do you believe it could ever be possible to teach a guy to multitask . I mean listen. The reason i have been able to get the stuff done you so generously described is because i have driven myself down to a nearhusk of a person, whereas you have a full, rich life, with humans, activities, relatives, lawrence came to my book event, by boat. Who goes to a thing by boat . Because he was boating i dont boat. I dont do these things. I have nothing in My Life, lawrence for you. Oh, from the audience, sharifa i apologize for stepping on your question a little bit and getting a Head Start on this question, which is how do you decide topics and questions for guests and contributors . My question is how do you decided two days ahead of time . [ laughter ] the reason is easy, its the best part of the job definitely is getting to decide what to talk about. What counts as the news of the day that you have something you want to offer or hear from a guest about. That process to me is the most difficult and most intellectually engaging in most rewarding part of it, much more rewarding and difficult than the actual writing what there is to say about it, and i value the Editorial Freedom we have got. Msnbc is not one of those networks where there is some boss chomping a cigar who says these are the six things are going to cover today. And you are booking my frat brothers. By the way. We are not kind of like that at all. We get to choose what to it is the art of what we do, not the science. I tried to come to it as late as possible. So, i am a collector of lazy excuses that are legitimate, okay . The first one that i ever had was on my first book that was so long ago Larry King had a Radio Show. [ laughter ] so Larry King, who had the biggest Radio Show in america was a big deal for, just before we start he turns to me and says i never read the books. Its talk radio, right . Because, if i read the books i might think you are too interesting. I have to hear it here, the way they are hearing it, then i will know how long i want to listen to this. Good evening he starts the show, thats the last thing i hear, and i think this is genius, the laziest possible choice. I dont like to book Guests Way in advance, its not a very guestdriven show, but i do like to pick topics when things occur to me. When it comes to whos coming on the show to talk about it, that, i still think its magic. How do you persuade a person to Come On television and talk about a News Story . I have no idea, and im too afraid to call people. So other people have to do that work, and i make people do it late in the game, which is cool. We stopped doing the hand off for years. Do you remember when we resumed it . Well, it was a little more important to me and [ laughter ] everybody who accuses me of being so needy in those handoffs is underestimating the neediness involved. I got knocked out of the show for almost 4 months. I was in an accident in a taxi. Broke a lot of bones and had to learn to walk again. I was finally coming back, i was so profoundly out of it i didnt know how to do the show anymore. It really was like you know, throwing a baby into The Deep End of the pool. I had no idea how to come back into this. And at the very last minute very last minute, i said ask rachel to say good evening to me tonight. And this miraculous thing happened, because i was in the studio in l. A. , and rachel was in New York, and she did that thing. The good Evening Lawrence and i, who was completely really disoriented to the point where i was not sure i could get to the first commercial. I wasnt sure i could get through this weirdness of doing this coming back to the show. Rachel said good evening and started talking to me, and the one thing i knew how to do was talk to rachel. And so we talked. [ applause ] and ive never said this, but what she was really doing in this astonishingly maternal way that she didnt even she was using a power in that moment, she was reaching down to that little boy and picking him up off the floor into his High Chair [ laughter ] which was a High Chair, because i can actually sit i had to sort of lien against it, and, saying its going to be okay, you can do this. And so yeah. It means a lot. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] and so and so the next night the next night i said tell rachel to say good evening to me every day. Shes been stuck for 10 years now with that. Whatever you do in your life for work, never organizing principle you have the involves other people in your life, first of all, make sure you have something in your life that involves other people, even if you work alone, some aspect of your life has to have regular engagement where you look them in the eye, and if you are lucky enough to have colleagues, who are mutually supportive mutually respectful, brilliant, and kind, even in different circumstances and when you disagree, never let that person go. Im just usually starting at this time, so we are good. Problematic since we all go to work at the same time. Symone has been working on this special and they refer to The Switch from biden to harris as The Switch. Thats what young black women when we spoke with them they said you know since the Switch Melissa and i were like what switch . [ laughter ] at the nail shop, they said The Switch at the top of the ticket, so since The Switch a lot of voters are thinking expensively about what they will do in this election. Black women chief among them who will make a difference in the margins, because thats where this is going to be won or lost. Our special you Cant Watch on msnbc on sunday, September 29th at 9 00 p. M. Mark your calendars. Never miss an opportunity for a permit. And the reason i bring it up is because i think it opened aperture for a lot of demographics. I focused a lot on the lucky no vote, which will be huge in arizona and nevada, but its also going to play a big role in pennsylvania, in wisconsin, in north carolina, and in georgia. To your point, not the same Vote Share as in arizona or nevada, but this will be an election that is played and won on the margins. There was something that happened with latino voters when there was The Switch. Which is when it was biden and trump they didnt like their choices. With harris at the top of the ticket the numbers have changed. They have normalized, they are not at 2020 levels of support for biden, they are nowhere near obama levels of support, i think folks look at that and say whats happened . There are a few things happening. I think number one its important to recognize a majority of latinos will vote for democrats. Theres also some Softness And Openness to Donald Trump. Our colleague has a great book, defectors, coming out about this, which i highly recommend. At The End of the day it comes down in focus groups, the fact they still see him as a business man, that that image of him i know but it is indelible and tractable, and they know what they think about him, so the new information is going to be about what he is going to do in a second term, and there is still a lot of voters who want to know more about emily harris. And you see her campaign is already doing that. They are talking about her economic agenda. They are going to have to go out there and play hard, which you advocated for since your time at rnc. If you show up for voters they will show up for you. We put an amazing coalition around the cycle the irony is because then obama care, the affordable care act, was a major portion of the conversation, there was conversation about the individuals right to choose and make choices for their healthcare, and here we are today, my party is sitting here saying you dont have that choice ladies, when it comes to your own body and healthcare. And that for me is one of those areas where coalitions which were formed in places like kansas and ohio where republican women are not aligned with their party on this issue, which is why you see the Harris Team making a concerted effort in their national Bus Tour to have that personal Oneonone Conversation with this emerging coalition of voters around that issue, but also around issues you mentioned a bit before that dont have a partisan tag attached to them. Why . We have not done policy in a long time until the biden era where we got infrastructure. We got [ cheers and applause ] we got inflation down and a number of other issues, and by the way, republicans signed off on that as well. They were part of the vote it was a bipartisan which again, says a lot about this President S ability to lead, and the way he has led, its been from my perspective as someone who is involved with politics, he was good at it. So, one of the aspects of this whole coalition i find somewhat amusing is that trump has been applying the black community with cheap leather sneakers and menthol cigarettes. This is the direct appeal to black men, and what i keep trying to tell republicans now as i told them in 2010 and 2009 is that brother is going to be fine until he gets home, and all of a sudden hes not going to be standing there looking at Donald Trump going yeah, im with him. But my point is thats not how you build a coalition, and the fact that you inc. So little of our community and the black and brown community to think that that is how we will vote and why we are going to vote for you the outreach, if we can call It Outreach the outreach the Trump Campaign has done specifically for communities of color and women, the outreach that hes done to his base i think his average demonstrates he thinks little of those individuals, because voters in my opinion not only want, but they deserve a high Level Conversation on the issues that are confronting them, which is why i start with the piece about childcare. Its a huge issue for people across this country when folks are in the polling saying when you see these poll the economy is going in the wrong direction when you break it down and look at the Cross Tabs or focus groups and have these conversations what people are saying affordability, housing, the ability to not have to work so many jobs or extra long hours to enjoy the things they want with their family. They are talking about childcare, because its too expensive, the rent is too high, so, they want policies to do something, unless you talk to them, and are doing actual outreach. And my notes i brought with me i dont like the polls. I dont like national polls, i definitely im not here for polls, but registered voters. I dont even like polls of likely voters, because the Voter Registration Boom that happened since The Switch, is 38 different states with data thats been uploaded let me get you some of the numbers okay . Young people are surging, during the week so we are talking about a week, about a month ago, during a month ago in 2020 voters under 30 28 . During that same week in 2024 increased to 57 . Okay . Like, thats crazy thats crazy. Hispanic Women Numbers are going off the charts for women under the age of 30, the more than quadrupled in louisiana and maryland, in iowa, in vermont, north carolina, and nebraska, these numbers will make a difference. If these people are getting registered to vote in this short amount of time to me that says they are primed and ready to participate. Thank you all so much. Thank you. Good to see you. We need to get the big chairs for the show. He was comfy. He was having a time. I loved it. Stuck at the dmv, and i think im late on my car insurance. Every person in this country deserves to be financially secure, socially free, physically safe, and we have a chance to talk about the american dream, because every american certainly deserves to pursue the american dream. Weve seen the polling, the economy seems to be the number one issue in every single day. Latest Jobs Report came out wasnt the best, wasnt the worst where did you see the state of the Economy Today . Its always about the economy, right . People say they vote with their Pocket Book millions of americans love to say im not a money person, i dont want to talk or think about money, but we need to, because it is hugely important. And how is the economy right now . We are a country of 330 Million people. There is not one economy, your entire Family Isnt facing the same picture, but we are pretty good. You know when the Human Body forgets what its like to give birth . We forgot what its like to live during coverage. Weve had an extraordinary recovery. Businesses have been built, we are still out there hiring, wages are up, it has been a great recovery. Compare the United States to every other developed Country Weve had a better canonic recovery, inflation is real, and i can tell you look wages are up, but when you get a raise you credit yourself with that, you got a raise, because a great at your job, but when everything costs more you blame the government. Thats just human nature, and the problem with inflation is we see it in every element of her life. For young people renting, for people trying to buy their first home its been brutal. Because the Jobs Picture is slowing, we are not in a bad situation, but its slowing, we will get that Interest Rate Cut which will relieve things, but the problem politically with inflation is that if you and i went out to dinner right now, and we got a burger and two beers you drink beer . You definitely [ laughter ] our bill might be 90, and we would talk about for the next 15 minutes is our problem, and thats why merchants dont feel good about the economy. Vice president harris put out an economic proposal with a lot of stuff that was popular. Is sitting grant for startup businesses. But it seems like she was penalized for her specifically where as Donald Trump can say i will Cut Taxes, and thats it. Price controls, and it will be a socialist takeover, it seems like everyone ran with that narrative. Its very hard for immigrants to speak about that, because the more they put out the more they get attacked. Democrats need to stop apologizing. [ cheers and applause ] and just own it. But, the media needs to do a significantly better job at how we are covering it. I dont have a political background, i have a business background. I would love nothing more than for both parties to put out actual policy proposals. And heres whats stunning. Her plan is more probusiness, is more centrist than President Bidens, but was truly twisted is that people arent taking the time to see that, and we see people say she is super progressive. What they are saying is shes a black woman, because thats the only thing they are saying. And they are assuming that because she is a black woman shes going to want xy, nz. And because shes an a black woman at the top thats amazing, but everyone should take a look, because Donald Trump says i will be here to Cut Taxes. The greatest Tax Hike we will see is if we have unilateral tariffs on everything. Last time we saw his tariffs in place we ended up needing a Farm Aid Package because farmers are suffering. Lets talk about vp harris, because i think you are speaking to something interesting. She is different from President Biden, she has strong elections with silicon valley, and it seems Wall Street is more open to her than perhaps resident biden. 80 ceos came out endorsing her. Right . And remember for Big Business out there they are not super political, they want to sell product. They dont want chaos, they want stability, and the unpredictability that we will get in a Donald Trump presidency is something the majority of Business People are not looking for. Theres a huge portion saying the world, this Country Isnt working for me i wont change, but if youre over here and it is all working, you are saying i want to keep things just as it is. Thats why we are seeing that, but when you hear people say im not so crazy about Donald Trump, but from a business economic perspective, no. From an economic perspective we are in a very strong position. Joe biden is presiding over a very good economy. And i invite you to take a look at this, the specific Business People backing Donald Trump. In my opinion it doesnt matter what you will do to the overall economy, but how can a Trump Presidency serve me in my business . Remember, regulation, and all regulation is good, but smart regulation is good. If you run a business and will get no regulation, and you get a Tax Cut thats like candy, that sounds great. You got to pay for it somewhere. I remind anyone out there when trump says legal Cut Taxes and i will extend that corporate Tax CutDonald Trump ballooned our deficit. He said im going to cut corporate taxes again. He has yet to articulate how he will pay for them, and at some Point Youve got to pay the bills. [ cheers and applause ] its been a very busy year of legal challenges for former president Donald Trump, four criminal cases being found guilty on 34 counts, with sentencing pending just delayed until november 26th, after the election. And there is a president ial election in the balance. Here to talk about all of that or the Stud Msnbc legal eagles , the host Ari Melber and the Professor And Cohost how are you doing . Look at this guy. Right . Thank you, guys. Wow, this is awesome. Have a seat. Thank you so much. How are you feeling, enter . I was waiting to do the mosh pit. Well we have some time later in the evening. I thought i would ask a question ive heard some of you ask us, which is how did you get here, andrew . What are you doing here . Hes very serious prosecutor. I will say even though we hear from andrew and our other great lawyers a lot they spend most of their careers avoiding any comment whatsoever. So you made a big jump, and many of you know, 50 Cent famously said really, this soon . I let my car, my Watch Talk for me, which meant he didnt have to say much, he let his success, or his work do the talking. Thats what andrew did through many years in government as a prosecutor in this Brooklyn District we are in. As General Counsel of the fbi and we would call in, check facts, we wouldnt get a comment from you and including andrew. How did you go from that quiet mode of work to what you do now . We used to say to our Press Person he had the best job ever. Being paid a full salary to say two words, no comment. So when i left the field and went into the private sector so many people tried to translate whats going on inside to an external audience, and having had that experience might be good at it, might be useful, and on a more personal level having having been vilified by the maga right i thought it might be useful for people to make their own judgments on who i actually am versus a caricature. How did you become interested in music and adept at quitting musical lyrics which we just saw . Respects. We have a couple questions from all of you we will get into. I went to jimi hendrixs high school. We are all really into hiphop, they had a big Marching Band Jazz band theres the Grunge And Rock scene. Ive always been interested in words as a writer. So it came to me very naturally. Ive always quoted lyrics in My Life, but for most of My Life it was seen as quirky, or annoying, and Guess What [ laughter ] maybe it still is. But, but back in the day i would do that in school, and i would be like its like tupac said. I do have friends who said we gave you a hard time, but that clearly didnt stop you. Now its a thing. When we had Senator Booker on once, and it was a relatively serious newsday, and at The End of the interview i said thank you for coming on, senator, because there are different moments. We dont always have to go be dead serious, but it was one of those days. At The End of the interview he was like no lyrics at all . So now i am turning us to law. Lets start with Donald Trump tried to overthrow and steal an election he lost and is running for office again, and we have seen the legal System Work in some ways and falter in others. If trump wins the election we all got the refresher about how a sitting president under doj rules. If he loses you expect him to go on Trial In Dc for the attempted coup . The Supreme Court where it was sort of 63, 54, Amy Coney Barrett is someone to keep your eye on, because she did not go with all the averages parts, in terms of good faith dealing with the issues the big issue that will remain is how much the Supreme Court continues to mess up that case. If Donald Trump does not win the case goes forward, it will go back to the Supreme Court, however, before there is a trial. There will be a second bite at the apple on that. With Judge Merchan i dont think he will dismiss the case on his own. No way. But, ultimately if he does that eventually Donald Trump will take that to the Supreme Court to evaluate. Now in a world where Donald Trump is lost you can only hope the Supreme Court, that there arent five justices to sort of continue doing what we are seeing. Not the only legal Analyst President ial immunity decision. I think people have felt a lot of passion, fear, anger, a lot of different questions about what kind of republic we are in the maga era. And my basic overview is its worse than you thought but better than it looks. A lot of key questions including Donald Trumps many efforts to overthrow the election in 2020 a similar court said no to all that and didnt want to go as far as actively stealing elections. They will apparently actively try to politically help him and some will enrich themselves and do grafting and take gifts, and all these problems, but they didnt go that far. So i get a lot of questions about this campaign season, and if its a close outcome you can expect a lot of the appeals and lawsuits you get. If either candidate wins by several states, biden won by three, the president would not suggest the Supreme Court will try to become a dictator court. And with five minutes left we have a couple more questions. One is from karen in seattle. Coming from a city like seattle, its a progressive place, she writes, how can we bridge the gap between so many polarized regions in our country .
