Morning And Welcome
to
Way Too Early
on this friday, september 6th. Im jonathan lemire, and thanks for starting your day with us. We have a lot to get to this morning, and well begin with the latest developments surrounding that deadly shooting at a
High School
in georgia. Authorities have now arrested the father of the 14yearold suspect. A man named
Colin Gray
was taken into custody yesterday. He faces charges for second degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and cruelty to children. Police did not offer many details other than to say that grays charges are directly connected with the actions of his son and allowing him to possess a weapon. Two
Law Enforcement
sources, however, tell
Nbc News
that gray bought his son an
Ar15style Rifle
as a gift. Its not known exactly when it was given to him, but sources say it was after police interviewed the teen last year about online threats. The teen had denied making those threats, and no arrest was made at the time. Grays son is accused of shooting and killing four people at apalachee
High School
on wednesday. He faces four counts of
Felony Murder
and is set to appear in court later this morning. Two senior
Law Enforcement
officials say they have discovered evidence of the
Suspects Interest
in mass shootings, particularly the 2018 attack in parkland, florida. So republican
Senator And Vice
president ial
Nominee J.
D. Vance responding to what happened in georgia says that
School Shooting
s are a, quote, fact of life. He made the comment during a
Campaign Event
in
Phoenix Yesterday
after a reporter asked vance about that shooting in georgia. The senator called the incident a tragedy but argued that guns are not the problem. Take a listen. Youve got some states with very strict
Gun Laws
, and youve got some states that dont have strict
Gun Laws
at all. And the states with strict
Gun Laws
, they have a lot of
School Shooting
s. And the states without strict
Gun Laws
, some of them have
School Shooting
s, too. So clearly strict
Gun Laws
is not the thing thats going to solve this problem. What is going to solve this problem and i really do believe this is, look, i dont like to admit. I dont like this is a fact of life, but if you are a psycho and you want to make headlines you realize that our schools are soft targets. And we have got to bolster security at our schools so that a person who walks through the front
Door Weve
got to bolster security so that if a psycho wants to walk through the front door and kill a bunch of children, theyre not able to. The
Harris Campaign
seized upon those remarks and posted a clip on social media. Governor
Tim Walz
then reposted it writing this. This is pathetic. We cant quit on our kids. They deserve better. Meanwhile, vance is also being criticized for his proposal to tackle the high cost of
Child Care
. He was asked about it wednesday at a conservative conference in arizona and told the crowd that families should simply get more help from relatives. One of the ways that you might be able to relieve a little bit of pressure on people who are paying so much for
Day Care
is make it so maybe
Grandma Or Grandpa
wants to help out a little bit more or maybe theres an
Aunt Or Uncle
who wants to help out a little bit more. If that happens you relieve of some of the pressure and resources were spending on
Day Care
. Then yesterday
Donald Trump
was asked on specifics on how his administration would make
Child Care
more affordable. Heres was his rambling response. Can you commit to prioritizing legislation to make
Child Care
affordable . And if so what specific piece of legislation will you advance . Well, i would do that, and were sitting down i was with somebody. We had
Senator Marco Rubio
and my daughter ivanka was so impactful on that issue. Its a very important issue, but i think when you talk about the kind of numbers that im talking about, that because
Child Care
is
Child Care
. You know, its something you have to have it. In this country you have to have it. But when you talk about those numbers compare today the kind of numbers that im talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that theyre not used to, but theyll get used to it very quickly. And its not going to stop them from doing business with us, but theyll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country. Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers were talking about including
Child Care
. Rambling bear begins to describe that. Not only does trump have no familiarity with the policy at all, but if
President Biden
had offer adnonsensical answer like that, thered be a lot of questions raised and headlines written about it. Meanwhile the harriswalz campaign, the dnc, and joint fundraising groups raised a whopping
361 Million
last month. According to the campaign the
August Haul
was the best grass
Roots Fundraising Month
in president ial history. The latest number nearly triples the amount raised by trump in that same period. Harris has seen record breaking fundraising numbers ever since taking over for biden as the democratic nominee. Meanwhile, ahead of next
Weeks President
ial debate, the
Harris Campaign
is planning a weekend of action to focus on what it describes as the dangers of a second
Trump Term
and project 2025. Campaign officials who first shared the plans with
Nbc News
say this will be their biggest action to date. It will include more than 2,000 events and expects to reach more than
1 Million
voters. Nbc news also reports the efforts are aimed at appealing to swing voters who may be drawn in by the recent endorsements of harris by republicans like
Congressman Liz Cheney
and the late senator john mccain. Meanwhile, lawmakers are set to return to washington next week with a deadline to prevent another
Government Shutdown
looming and
House Republicans
are preparing for a spending battle. According to the
Hill House Speaker
Mike Johnson
is planning to pair a sixmonth
Continuing Resolution
with a trumpsupported bill to require proof of citizenship to register to vote. The move would give the
Freedom Caucus
some sort of political win, but its drawing doubts from some
Rank And File
republicans who are concerned it could damage the party electorally. Joining us now congressional reporter for
The Hill
and one of the authors of that piece mychael snell. To my mind the even greater consequences of shutting down the government just a month or two before the election . Yeah, thats exactly what
House Republicans
are toying with right now. You mention were back in this dilemma for
House Republicans
, really for congress once again were staring down a shutdown deadline,
September 30th
to face a
Government Shutdown
. So
Speaker Johnson
unveiled his
Opening Salvo
with as you mentioned a sixmonth
Continuing Resolution
paired with that legislation that would require individuals to show proof of citizenship to register to vote, something i would note its already not legal to vote unless youre a citizen of the united states. Something democrats have been very quick to point out. With johnson doing this, he was sort of throwing a bone to the house
Freedom Caucus
, to his right flank, to the conservatives in the conference. This something theyd been pushing for. Its a trumpbacked bill, but as you mention it is putting some moderates in a tough position. Because, a, if a shutdown does occur and this package is unlikely, it really definitely will not prevent a shutdown because democrats in the senate will not take it up, there could be a lot of concern among incumbents it could hurt them electorally. Congressman nick lolota, during a private
Conference Call
with
Gop Leadership
earlier this week he said theres a concern if theres a shutdown for about a dozen incumbents who are in these tough positions. Thats top of mind for members and its interesting to see when this fails in a shutdown because as i mentioned the senate is not going to take it up, how johnson will reverse to a shutdown in
The End
. Particularly trump, this election the economy was supposed to be a winning issue. A lot of the metrics are still good but a lot of americans suggesting prices are too high and they arent too happy with it. Trump delivers this nonsensical answer. Is there a lot of concern in the gop improving numbers paired with trumps inability to deliver the message could hurt them . I can tell you right now democrats are happy with how things are going. They pointed out the meandering responses from
Donald Trump
. Theyre riding this
Momentum Boost
from
Vice President
when that happened after she became the nomy, after the convention and the rollout with
Tim Walz
. Ive spoken to a lot of
House Republicans
about this harris
Momentum Boost
. They told me they think the number will recalibrate after labor day. Were officially in that time right now because right now harris still enjoying a
Riding High
on that momentum. You mentioned a clip of j. D. Vance. I have heard from a number of
House Republicans
after j. D. Vance was selected as trumps running mate, they did not think he was a great choice, they saw him as sort of a
Mirror Image
of former
President Trump
. Would it help trump expand the
Gop Base
to win the election . That is obviously when republicans were in a much better position with biden at the top of the ticket. So there are been concerns with the
Trumpvance Ticket
since vance was selected perhaps even before with former
President Trump
at the top of it. Perhaps with these answers and
Vice President
Kamala Harris
doing well with her
Momentum Boost
, sure the dinners are probably going to increase. I saw the
Texas Tribune Festival
a sitting republican said he believes the house is on track lose the house. Congressman
Tony Gonzalez
saying if he they lose the house, its going to be on the hands of republicans. Lets look at the past
Year And Half
theyve had. They took 15 rounds to elect
Speaker Kevin Mccarthy
last year, then they ousted
Speaker Kevin Mccarthy
. There was almost a default on u. S. Debts, almost a shutdown. It has been a topsyturvy winding road for
House Republicans
and for congress. Now what a lot of folks are saying behind the scenes and what democrats are thinking,
Tony Gonzalez
is saying out loud, that if perhaps republicans lose this year its because of their own doing over the past year and a half. Mychael, thanks for starting us off this morning. Next up well bring you the latest on the stalled

Surprise Move Hunter biden pleads guilty to federal tax charges on what was meant to be the first day of his trial in california. Well talk about that new development and what it could mean for the president s son when

Love Island . Welcome back to
Way Too Early. It is just after 5 30 a. M. Here on the east coast, 2 30 out west on this friday morning. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for being with us. The judge overseeing
Donald Trumps federal
Election Interference Case says that the 2024 campaign is not relevant in deciding the timeline of the criminal proceedings. So attorneys for the former president and special
Counsel Jack Smith were in
Court Yesterday for a hearing to determine how the case will proceed. Judge
Tanya Chutkan declined to set a new
Trial Date but did schedule a series of filings from both sides to assess the impact of several legal issues including the
Supreme Courts recent immunity ruling. Elsewhere on the legal front in a
Surprise Move Hunter biden pleaded guilty yesterday to all charges in the federal
Tax Case against him. The plea came just hours after
Jury Selection was supposed to begin in los angeles. The 54yearold was accused in a scheme to avoid paying at least 1. 4 million in taxes. The plea avoids a potentially embarrassing trial for the son of president
Joe Biden just months after his conviction in a separate gun case. Hunter biden issued a statement following the plea stating that his decision was meant to spare his family another painful and embarrassing criminal trial. The
Justice Department stated yesterday that
Hunter Biden faces a maximum of 17 years in prison but noted the sentences are typically less than the maximum. Sentencing is scheduled for this matter on december 16th. President biden had said previously he would not use his president ial power to pardon his
Son Nor Commute his sentence. That decision was reiterated yesterday by
White House
Press Secretary
Karine Jean Pierre who spoke to reporters aboard
Air Force one. Anthony, thanks for joining us this morning. Lets start with the
Hunter Biden matter. Obviously the political impact of this plea obviously far less than would have anticipated now that
President Biden is not seeking reelection, but of course a heavy personal toll on the president and his family. But what sort of sentence do you think
Hunter Biden should expect to receive . And does his previous conviction play any role at all . Yeah, it absolutely will play some type of role here. Its important to note here, jonathan, that
Sentencing Guidelines in this type of case are typically you know, you can expect a person to get like 28 months or so. That is average for guidelines, but judges typically sentence individuals like mr. Biden to around 16 months in this type of case. So lets turn now to the other significant legal news yesterday, which was
Judge Tanya Chutkan overseeing trumps
Election Interference Case. Said the 2024 campaign not relevant to deciding the
Time Line of criminal proceedings. But it is of note some of the dates that she did set for deadlines for these filings do come before the election, meaning this case will be the headlines. Voters will be reading and seeing it before they cast their ballots. What do you make of the timing of the case here . Well, ill start by saying that the defense walked into the courthouse yesterday, jonathan, with the wind at their back. They have been incredibly successful at slowing down this case, at trying to keep it from a jury before the election day. Theyve been successful there. Their one goal yesterday, their one goal was try to prevent any new information about
Donald Trumps efforts to steal the last election from reaching voters this election. Prosecutors for they are eager to get going here. They fully understand, jonathan, that whatever
Judge Tanya Chutkan decides thats official or nonofficial act, whatever is going to be included this case, they fully expect prosecutors in this case expect it to go back to the
Supreme Court before the trial can get started. And i think what you saw, what youre referencing, what we all saw yesterday in this case was
Judge Tanya Chutkan saying no more
Foot Dragging here. She is not going to be swayed by any external pressures about any external calenders. And so what we see coming forward by
September 26th if not before is prosecutors making their argument probably with new information using
Fbi Witness interviews, perhaps
Grand Jury testimony we havent seen to further strengthen their
Argument Donald Trump was acting as a candidate and not as president here. Jonathan, i will say the one reason this is important this week is just a couple days ago we heard the president for the very first time acknowledge what we all know to be true, which is that he lost the election to
Joe Biden. And this ruling comes just as that is in the public sphere, and were going to find out more of what he did to advance the big lie, which was also a big conspiracy that included multiple players and multiple states. We should also note on another legal matter the judge in new
York City expected to rule today whether or not hell be delaying trumps sentencing, which is scheduled for the middle of next month. We, of course, will have complete coverage of that as it happens. Msnbc justice and legal

Cnbcs Charlotte reed who joins us live from london. Good morning, charlotte. So
Wall Street is gearing up for one of the most important economic releases of the year, which is due out later this morning. Preview for us what were going to learn. Good morning, john. Were very much wait and see on the market. This morning some nervousness ahead of these
August Nonfarm payrolls. Now,
Wall Street is looking for new jobs to rise by 160,000. From recent data theres been some mixed signals on the u. S. Economy, particularly some weakening of the labor market, thats raising concern of a potential u. S. Recession, so markets are certain that the fed will start cutting rates later this month. But the question is by how much. And so thats why this
Data Today is so important. The higher than expected
Payroll Data means that the fed is more likely to cut less interest rates, around 25
Basis Points rather than a bigger cut at 50
Basis Points. So its all at stake there with these numbers, so we wait for them at 8 30 eastern time. We certainly will have complete coverage of that jobs report when it happens. So switching gears now. A u. K. Regulator has launched an investigation into the sale of
Concert Tickets for next years upcoming
Reunion Tour by the band oasis. A lot of people excited about that. But whats going on here . Well, the u. K. Watchdog is concerned
Ticket Master didnt trade tickets fairly. Prices basically changing according to demand. Theyre studying whether this breached some
Consumer Protection laws there. The
European Commission is doing a similar probe as well for the rest of the european union. So this is a fresh headache for
Ticket Masters parent company, live nation, that is also under probe in the u. S. And could ask to break up the company. I have to admit, john, i was one of these people stuck in a virtual queue for hours
Saturday Morning and i didnt get a ticket. Youre certainly an interested party. I hope you can find your way into one of those shows some time next year, thats if the brothers are still speaking to
Each Other by then. Cnbcs charlotte reed, live from london. Thank you. Have a good weekend. Next up president

Joe Biden visited
Wisconsin Yesterday where he announced a
Government Investment of more than
7 Billion into affordable power and clean energy. These new federal investments come as democrats try to make in roads in rural communities. The administration says the funding will directly help lower costs for consumers and preview also how biden will be used on the
Campaign Trail going forward. Speaking in the midwest, speaking to rural voters, speaking to some older voters. Joining us now
White House
Press Secretary
Andrew Bates. Thank you for joining us this morning. So these investments in
Wisconsin Yesterday, talk to us how that funding will affect consumers. But also is this a preview what were going to see from the president also one eye towards his legacy. Spending the remaining few months of his term really trying to reiterate to americans this is what this administration has delivered . Jonathan, the president is going to have an aggressive
Travel Schedule for the remainder of his time in office, and he is going to be talking about these real world benefits that are coming online from what is the most significant legislative record of any modern presidency. And like you said, yesterday he made the biggest investment in
Rural Electrification since the new deal in the 1930s. That is going to benefit people in rural communities across 23 states. It is going to help up to 20 of our entire rural population. It is going to create over 20,000 new jobs, and i want to be clear about one thing. This is happening thanks to the inflation reduction act, of which
Vice President harris was a deciding vote. Congressional republicans or
Republican Officials have made clear that they want to repeal the inflation reduction act. They want to take away all of the life changing benefits that we are talking about now. And thats just one example because the inflation reduction act, of course, covers a great deal of ground. It is why medicare can now negotiate lower
Drug Costs with big pharma. It is why manufacturing is coming back from overseas. But the radical project 2025 agenda that
Republican Officials support would erase all of these benefits and take all of these away. But, yes, to your other question the president is going to be traveling the country and highlighting what he and the
Vice President are doing for working people because its transforming communities all over this country. Andrew, yes, we played sound earlier in the show. Donald trump, of course, the
Gop Nominee was asked yesterday about his plan to lower
Child Care costs. And in his rambling answer he seemed to point to tariffs as the solution. What is the
White House saying in response to that . Well, jonathan, if you have any idea what the hell that answer means youre a better detective than i am because these tariffs that he wants to apply across the board would amount to a 4,000
Tax Increase on working families, and that is something authorities across the private sector are warning would be devastating for our economy and depress economic growth whether its
Goldman Sachs or moodys its been clear this would worsen inflation, would raise costs on basic items every family needs including items that are fundamental for
Child Care. If youre buying a crib, if youre of products that every single american family needs. At the same time, maganomics means giant
Tax Giveaways for billionaires and big corporations. Instead, what we need to do, what the president and what
Vice President harris want to do, is cut taxes for working people and pass an expanded child tax credit. Thats what we need to do. Andrew, in our last remaining moments, very briefly, we heard from prime
Minister Netanyahu Yesterday suggest a deal was not close, its been further apart than it has been in a while to get a
Ceasefire Agreement to get the hostages out. Whats the
White House response to that . The president is working very hard every day, as is the
Vice President and every member of the national security team, to secure an agreement that would bring the hostages home. There is no higher priority than getting the american hostages taken by hamas during their brutal
October 7th
Terrorist Attack home. Were working on that every day. We are working with the parties involved, including with egypt and qatar. But it is essential that we get a deal done to bring those hostages home and end the fighting in gaza as soon as possible. And i want to say
Something Else here, which is, i know that yesterday, hamas took the disgusting step of releasing the video of
Hersh Goldberg polins murder. I want to reiterate what the president and the
Vice President said after the tragic news of his death, which is, this is absolutely unacceptable. It is inhuman. It highlights why we have to stand together and work hard against this kind of brutality and spend every moment that we can trying to bring these hostages home. That is what we are doing. White house senior
Press Secretary
Andrew Bates, thank you for joining us this morning. Up next here on
Way Too Early,
Donald Trump is giving us some insight on his
Debate Strategy ahead of next
Weeks Faceoff with
Vice President
Kamala Harris. Well show you what trump says he plans to do this time around. Then, coming up on morning joe, the latest from the
Police Investigation in georgia, as the father of the high
School Shooting suspect is arrested. Also ahead, democratic nominee for u. S. Senate in the state of texas,
Congressman Colin allred will be our guest to talk about his bid to unseat gop senator cruz. Morning joe will be moments away. When i had biden, you and i had the same discussion. Yeah. I let him talk. Im going to let her talk. A debate is interesting. You can go in with all the strategy you want, but you have to sort of feel it out as the debate is taking place. Ive seen it. You go in there and have a strategy. Mike tyson did the same thing. Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face. Its true. It was a brilliant statement. Its a brilliant statement. I can tell sean exactly what im going to do, but things change. It depends a lot on abc. Will they be fair or not . If theyre not going to be fair, im going to be a little different than if they are. I hope theyre going to be fair. That was former
President Trump weighing in on next
Weeks Debate against
Vice President
Kamala Harris. He did so during part of a
Fox News Town
Hall Broadcast on that network. Joining us now, author of the book how the right lost its mind, our friend charlie sykes. This is a muchanticipated debate. Give us your sense of expectations there. Do you think the muted microphones will play any role . How do you expect each candidate to comport themselves . Ive been a
Debate Skeptic in the past but, of course, the pivotal event of 2024 was the first debate. Obviously, expectations are very, very high. The stakes are very high. Kamala harris is going to try to get under
Donald Trumps skin without letting him get under hers. The muted microphone i dont think is going to have that much of an effect, but it is interesting that
Donald Trump wants a muted microphone. Kamala harris would like to have an open microphone. Shed like to
Let Trump be trump. Let trumps, you know, insults, his rambling, his interjections be heard by the audience. But i think if anybody is expecting this to be a serious or substantive debate on policy, i think theyre going to be disappointed. This will not be confused with the lincoln douglas debate. Donald
Trump Isnt interested in debating on substance. His
Performance Yesterday when he was asked how hed reduce
Child Care costs is a pretty good example of the way his mind is working these days. It is as devoid of information as it is of any sort of intellectual discipline. Its going to be a fascinating faceoff between two people who never met
Each Other and obviously despise
Each Other. I think itll come through during the debate. Theyve never met, of course, because trump skipped
Bidens Inauguration in 2021. Harris was there, of course. Youre right, to highlight his comments yesterday, that wasnt the weave. That was pure nonsense. Gibberish. We come into this debate, charlie, where, you know, polls very close. Harris slight leads but marginal tie. She has momentum in terms of the money. Her camcampaign,
Democrats Rais more than three times what trump did last month. With a cash advantage, that frees her up going forward. She doesnt have to fundraise as much and can focus on campaigning. Well, she can also do
Something Else thats very, very unusual, which is shes giving money away. Shes giving money to down ticket races, which is really rather extraordinary. Look, this race is still very, very close. Donald trump still has an advantage when it comes to the electoral college. Its going to come down, not to the popular vote nationally, but to what happens in georgia and pennsylvania and michigan and wisconsin. All of those states are really on the
Razors Edge right now. Thats the audience for the debate next week. Yeah, youre certainly right to highlight pennsylvania. Thats where harris is doing her
Debate Prep in the coming days. She can camp out there and do campaigning while she preps. Charlie sykes, thank you. Stick around. Well talk again on morning joe. Thanks to all of you for getting up
Way Too Early on this friday morning. Have a good weekend, everyone. Well see you monday. Morning joe starts right now. Trump also reached back a ways to criticize how the democrats ran their primaries. New hampshire was so badly treated by the
Democrat Party and by
Joe Biden and her, i cant imagine
New Hampshire voting for him. Yeah, i cant imagine anybody in
New Hampshire voting for biden. You know why . Because hes not on the ballot anymore [ applause ] i cant these people get it. These folks know. President biden will not be on the
Debate Stage in four days. Vice president
