Weave. You know what the weave is? i'll talk about like nine different things and they all come back brilliantly together, and it's like, and friends of mine that are like english professors, they say, the most brilliant thing i have ever seen. But the fake news, you know what they say? he rambled inthat's not rambling. It's the weave. It's the weave. Trump rambling about how he doesn't ramble, it's the weave. Despite the clear problems with his campaign, america's oldest ever presidential candidate took labor day off to golf and chill while vice president kamala harris and her running mate had a very busy long weekend with momentum on their side. Also tonight, j. D. Vance's close ties to the manosphere and his absolute obsession with getting women out of the workplace and back into the kitchen raising the many, many babies he and trump and their project 2025 pals would force them to have. Plus, his name was wally howard jr. , a murdered syracuse police officer. Strangely, one of howard's killers was set free by donald trump in the final hours of his presidency. And went on to strangle his wife. So why is no one held trump accountable for any of this? but we begin tonight with the beginning of the final sprint toward november. Happy back to school day if you're a parent of youngins or college kids and if you're not a mom who birthed children out of your body without using fertility treatments or adopting or becoming a stepmom, jd vance would like to have a word with you. Seriously, we're three days from the start of early voting in north carolina. We are just 63 days until the final voting day, november 5th. Monday was labor day, a holiday to celebrate the american labor movement and american workers, and the two presidential campaigns spent it in markedly different ways. Vice president kamala harris and her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, held labor day events in michigan and wisconsin. Vice president harris later joined president joe biden in pittsburgh talking about the contributions of working people. You tell me who in wisconsin is sitting around saying damn, i wish they would give billionaires tax cuts and screw me over. I wish they would make my job more difficult and dangerous and make me work until i'm 75 years old. No one is saying that. No one is asking for that agenda. Wall street did not build america. The middle class built america, and unions built the middle class. That's a fact. Everywhere i go, i tell people, you may not be a union member, but you better thank unions for that fiveday work week. When unions are strong, america is strong. The harris/walz campaign is continuing to build on its momentum, shoring up support with voters in key states on key issues. Surrogates for the democratic campaign kicked off the fighting for reproductive freedom bus tour in palm beach county, florida, today. Palm beach county, of course, is also the home of the republican presidential nominee, donald trump. And where was he on labor day? holed up in his maralago resort, presumably golfing, of course. Whatever he was doing, he was definitely missing in action from the campaign trail and he's actually serious about running for president, he might want to work harder for his own sake. Hello prison and many fines. Meanwhile, a republican official will, quote, no longer have any involvement with the trump campaign after he sent an email sunday saying new hampshire was no longer a battleground state, and trump was sure to lose by an even higher margin that in 2016 and 2020. It is yet another sign that the map is shrinking for donald trump ahead of his first debate with vice president harris in philadelphia just one week from today. A series of battleground state polls from bloomberg found vice president harris and donald trump essentially tied in north carolina and arizona. And the vice president leading within the margin of error in georgia, michigan, nevada, and pennsylvania. In wisconsin, harris leads trump outside the margin of error. Nationally, a usa today suffolk university poll found vice president harris with a fivepoint lead over trump among likely voters in a multicandidate field within the margin of error. Meanwhile, the last time trump actually did work for his campaign, it was just more fearmongering and demagogging to maga voters at a moms for liberty event on friday. Our country is being poisoned, poisoned, and your schools and your children are suffering greatly because they're going into the classrooms, they're taking the seats, and they don't even speak english. The transgender thing is incredible. Think of it, your kid goes to school. And comes home a few days later with an operation. The school decides what's going to happen with your child. And you know, many of these childs 15 years later say what the hell happened? who did t to me? okay, first, donald, that's a lie. Full stop. And a dangerous and ridiculous lie. There is no school in america where a child has gone into a clooszroom and come out having surgery to alter their gender. There are literally no schools or teachers deciding what's going to happen with any child in any classroom except what's on the lesson plan for the day. So let's just be crystal clear about that, donald. Like that's just weird and a lie. But it is yet another reminder of how absolutely unhinged and cognitively impaired the 78yearold republican candidate is. In fact, if any other candidate spoke that incoherently about anything, we would say they should be committed. If joe biden said anything close to that, every major newspaper in america would be demanding that he resign or have the 25th amendment applied stat. But it's trump so you know, it's tuesday. And you would think his campaign would at least try to do something to stop him from drooling into his verbal oatmeal. But you know, maybe they're a bit distracted with their own things and laying out the groundwork for future careers outside of politics. In fact, here is what their republican national committee cochair lara trump, donald trump's daughterinlaw, has been up to. ♪ we're out of luck ♪ ♪ no this can't be denied ♪ ♪ you gotta be special ♪ ♪ takes a lot to put everybody first ♪ ooh, taylor swift, look out. I want to read this to you. Actually, do you want to comment on the music video? i want to pray for lara trump. I mean, if her future is certainly not going to be in the white house, she certainly shouldn't be in the studio either. We have to find something for her, bless her heart. I love people who have a dream. I am not knocking her having a dream. I'm saying simon cowell used to tell folks on american idol this might not be your dream. You can have a dream, but this might not be the appropriate dream for you. It might be a nightmare, and probably, though, when she looks at how their campaign is unraveling, and donald trump, her candidate and relative has become unhinged, you said it right. We would be demanding the 25th amendment if joe biden said anything remotely as unhinged and just totally incoherent as that. But he's going around still high in some polls, not where he was because kamala harris has certainly unseated him as the front runner, but he's certainly still being able to for other reasons have this grip on a lot of voters that think this is the only way to bring america back to the days before women had rights and blacks and browns and other people of color had rights. And now he's imagining, hallucinating that children are being made to change their gender. In school. In school, with the instruction of their teachers. We're acting like this is a serious candidate. Or like this is a serious threat to this country. I think that we are seeing a man absolutely becoming other than his best self and even his best self wasn't great. But he's lost the ability to even think while he's talking. It just comes out. It's like a baby just spitting up. And i think that because of that, even his most ardent followers have to scratch their head. You would think. And the fact he's even in the 40s is shocking given the stuff he says. And jemele, let me bring you in on this. I'm not even going to play it, i'm going to read it to you. The reason i wanted you on the show, you pointed out something that is a note for us in the media, that we need to start thinking about this. I'm going to read verbatim what donald trump said last week in lacrosse, wisconsin. Here's the yoet. And groceries, food has gone up at levels that nobody has ever seen before. We have never seen anything like it. 50, 60, 70%. You take a look at bacon and some of these products and some people don't eat bacon anymore and we're going to get these energy prices down when we get energy down. They want wind all over the place, but when it doesn't blow, we have a little problem. That's what he is saying is called the weave. Where he starts out talking about the price of food, he then goes to bacon, which is food, to be fair to donald trump, suddenly he gets into wind. And we have a terrible problem. There is no world in which a candidate speaking in that way would not be evaluated by the media as in serious cognitive design. This is what the media did to joe biden for a full year. And he didn't say anything like that. Why are we not having a serious conversation, just on a media side, about donald trump's brain and where it stands in terms of its health? i think part of it is that everyone is so used to him sounding nonsensical that it doesn't really read as anything particularly different. But i think it does. And i think if you actually compare trump of today, the trump of 2016, there is like a measurable decline. But also, i think it's important i think it's important to emphasize not for voters, for viewers, right, for readers that the job of being president is in a lot of ways just managing and prioritizing crises and urgent things. And here is someone who is evidently incapable of staying on a singular train of thought for more than 15 seconds. I was about to say 30 seconds, but that sounds quite generous. It's 15 seconds. You can call it a weave and describe it as like stream of consciousness, but no, it's just babbling. It's babbling and sort of word association that in the aggregate you can maybe divine some kind of meaning, but if you're just actually kind of watching it and then as you did, like reading it straightforwardly, like reading a transcript, it's word salad. And it's i think it's indicative of someone who literally is not capable of being president. I think that's something viewers and readers need to know. I totally agree. I'm going to bring you in, i promise, david. But i have to come back to rev because you know him and you have known him 30 years, you met him in the '80s. He obviously is not, does not have the mental acuity he had back then. It's clear. And he wasn't that bright then, but he at least was lucid. I mean, we're talking about somebody talking about bacon and wind. I mean, children don't talk like this. And i really think that if people around him that care for him, they would usher him off the stage because this is becoming more and more ridiculous, and he has 63 more days to election day. Who knows what he's going to do. He may come out with rattles and a diaper in a minute because this is as ludicrous as that is. And what is troubling, though, is the people that are supposedly serious, members of the u. S. Senate, republicans of the house, that are rallying behind him. What i think we are missing here is where are all of the republicans calling on him to step aside or at least take an acuity test when we saw leading democrats do that to joe biden who didn't do anything near this. Yeah, elon musk literally said that joe biden, and he at one point said donald trump are too old to be president. Let me bring you in david. Let me play another thing donald trump did. He admitted he committed a federal crime. Here he is talking about whether or not he interfered with the 2020 election. It's so crazy that my poll numbers go up. Whoever heard you get indicted for interfering with a presidential election where you have every right to do it, you get indicted, and your poll numbers go up. I don't even know what to do with that, david. So, look, i think all this conversation about incoherence is so true of donald trump. And sometimes we overlook the big picture. The big picture is donald trump is a terrible presidential candidate. Like, historically terrible. This is one of the worst nominations a major party has made in decades. He is incoherent, listless, off message, and now he's confessing to crimes on the record. Contrast that with vice president harris, who is out there with working class union voters on labor day, while donald trump is sitting back at a country club that he owns, not that he's a member of, but he owns. He's not just a terrible candidate which is why he has this ceiling in the mid40s, remarkable that high, he's lost every popular vote he's faced. He's also a terrible defendant. He's still indicted by jack smith for interfering in the 2020 election, and he just went out there and said, i had a right to do it. And those statements are admissible in the jack smith case. Donald trump's play all along, we know in his legal vulnerabilities has been win the presidency and have the trials dismissed. If he loses this thing, he's facing trial on what he just said there about his right to interfere will absolutely be admitted in his trial. Jemele, i feel like donald trump's protection has been twofold, it has been the courts, john roberts and the supreme court, and the members of the court he installed, and the media. He has gotten a pass that i have never seen a politician get from us. And even on things like that, he's admitting to crimes almost daily at this point. There's a phrase i really like from way back under george w. Bush. It's from a speech i believe he gave on education. A speech for no child left behind, and the phrase is the soft bigotry of low expectations. I think trump is just the greatest single beneficiary of the soft bigotry of low expectations. No one expects much from him, which is itself kind of crazy given that he's running for president, but no one expects much from him, so when he does something that is unusual or that is incoherent or deranged, it doesn't register as newsworthy in the way it might if a regular politician did. If ted cruz did something that donald trump did, that would be news. It would be reported on, a big deal because we recognize that ted cruz is, whether you agree or disagree with him, a normal politician with normal proclivities and behaves in normal ways. So the abnormality becomes newsworthy. In trump's case, it's almost as if what's newsworthy with him is when he behaves in a normal manner. Then it's worth commenting on. Otherwise, the abnormality is treated by standard, which i think it's not good. You should treat the abnormality as a big deal because, again, he's running to be the most powerful person on the planet. Exactly. And meanwhile, kamala harris is said to be evading questions when she won't answer an absurd question about donald trump said that you're not black.
