president bidden and his former boss at a fundraiser last night. sounding off on the supreme court. i will ask about all of the ways in which the rules of law is in crisis right now. later on this father's day, thoughts from me about the aftermath of hunter biden's conviction and what it is telling us. okay. here is a really important thing to remember. donald trump can not take a wrecking ball to american democracy all by himself. he will need lots of help to do it. he will need help from people in power that don't care about anything other than policing him. right now we can see how much help he will have if he manages to get back to the white house. this week, just a couple days ago, trump made his first trip back to capitol hill since his supporters mob today on january 6th. stormed the place and how do you think they welcomed him back, the impeached and convicted felon that put their lives in dangerous? well, obviously, birthday cake, candles and all and fonding, groveling and praise for him. >> he said very complementary things about all of us. we sustained applause. he said i am doing a good job. we are grateful for that >> saw me. i was sitting back a little ways, saw me, hello, marjorie, he is always so sweet and recognizes me. >> he is so sweet? congresswoman he sent an angry violent mob to your place of work, not that long ago. they had to run for their lives and hide with gas masks on. then the guy that sent the mob there came back to the scene of the crime and ranted also about hannibal elector and taylor twist. trashed the home city of the republican convention and their only reaction from all of these members was "he noticed me," "he said i did i good job, he is so sweet." we know they know he is responsible but now it is like none of it happen flood there is no question, none president trump is practical and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. >> we shook hands a few times and he took questions from the audience and he was entirely positive session. >> trump and i, we had a hell of a journey. i hated it to end this way. all i can say is count me out. enough is enough. >> he was the team captain. we were glad he was leading us. it was the single best meeting i ever seen between the united states republican senators and president trump. >> i mean, when you watch it like that, side to side these are the same people. their evolution is still pretty shocking. all of that valid outrage you saw from them and other members turned into a handshake and a soft smile and, of course, blindly following their team captain towards the november election. as former congresswoman cheney put it, mcconnell knows he is a danger and yet he continues to enable him. but, here is the thing. they long enabled him. long, the scary thing this time around is most republicans are not just enabling him by rolling their eyes or looking the other way at this bad behavior. this time they are actively trying to weaponize the system on his behalf. according to the "new york times," house republicans vowing to fight harder to protect trump from various prosecutors. pledging subpoenas and cut funding for law enforcement that investigate them. florida representative, gatz, that guy -- gaetz, yes, that guy, the house of the representative has a critical role to utilize power. he will be the head of that. >> trump has been obsessed in recent weeks with empowering the powers of all of his behalf and johnson following him. y husband we have to overturn this. johnson, surprise, surprise, reportedly sympathized with trump's frustration. look. i don't have illusions nor should you about what this party has become. too many of them seem to be willingly to ignore and excuse anything, even violent insurrection, this time they are not just ignoring and excusing and explaining away. this time they are actively putting their hands up and telling them that they are ready and willing to help him. joining me now is cory booker from new jersey. senator, thank you for joining me. this week, trump made his first trip to capitol hill since the insurrection which is startling, i think, for a lot of us. and i can't really get the image out of my head of mitch mcconnell who, said trump committed a disgraceful dereliction of duty during january 6th and also the others who seem to be embracing him who had similar sentiments at the moment. i wanted to ask you how you digested that especially given how many senators felt around january 6th. >> it is interesting you saying this public national forum but in the private conversations of senators we all remember how dark that day was. that the world's deliberative body in that space had to be chased out, running f their lives to avoid a mob that was chanting murderous chants that ultimately led to the death of multiple police officers and the person who incited it all, don't take my words for it, again, take republican time after time condemning what donald trump did. he was on trial for it. he was impeached, ultimately numbers of republicans voted to convict him for what he did andshowed back up on the scene of the crime and people who spoke very passionately about the president of the united states really wanting to undermined the dignity of the office showed back up. to the capitol. it was, it brought a lot of that pain back. and talking to some capitol police officers who went through hell on that day. who showed the greatest of honor willing to put it on the line. trump being the person who they are escorting, it was painful. >> yeah. i am sure it was. and as you said it, i am sure it brought back so many memories to so many people who witness that and were there for january 6th. there was a lot that happened this week, you lived it. i am sure you are aware of the controversy that broke out over comments that he made about milwaukee, of course hosting the republican convention coming up later this summer. he called him a horrible city. not a new thing for him. he called washington and filthy and crime-ridden embarrassment, called baltimore a disgusting rat and rodent infested mess. these are america's cities. what do you make of his comments and what is driving it? >> reporter: this is the spirit of the man. we got to understand this. a person who does not love america. he demeans and degrades some of our most precious beloved places. when he does that he de means and degrades the people that live there, teaching in our schools, firefighters, the police officers, the civic engineers, so many. i was the mayor of one. decades of losing population and investment. there are cities all over america that are standing back up, having investment come in, businesses moving back, exciting cities of promises. we don't need a president that divides us. it is disheartening to see one of our major political parties elevating someone who does not celebrate america. i mean the rhetoric of ronald reagan, george bush sr. they were about celebrating this country, lifting this country up, seeing it for what it is. when i came to new york i moved to a -- newark it was challenging, they said boy, you need to understand something, the world you see outside of you is a reflection of what you have inside of you and she really challenged me to open my eyes and see the potential and the possibility, the hope and the dignity of the people. and i will never forget that. trump is really telling the story of who he is, not the story of who milwaukee is. >> such a good point. it is a reminder. one of the thing that is challenging about the politics, senator, there is a lot to run against here. i wanted to ask you about trump's conviction and the politics surrounding that as well. illinois governor said this about the conviction heed quote this is also what i believe about what is most important to americans particularly those in the middle that are going to decide this election. i raise that because there is a lot to run against. do you share that belief that trump being a convicted felon could be one of the most important factors at this point? >> reporter: i am not sure, i am looking at focus group details and the evidence that moves people the most is the achievements of the biden administration that most americans are not aware of, what he accomplished. there is a president that has a pathway. i will be one of those guys, campaigning all over this country. not only speaking to the bright light and positive accomplishments of this president but i am going to try to remind people of who donald trump is in his own words or his own actions. and yeah, not only has he had 34 felony convictions he is a convicted felon, but he has two pending federal felony indictments. both for interfering with an election as well as how he has handled classified documents that endanger our national security. he has a state felony conviction in georgia. that is not all. this guy has also been found by the new york supreme court, him and his organization have been found liable and fined $450 million. despicable and disgusting things he did to carroll. he has been fined tens of millions of dollars. even as activities were exposed by a judge to have been corrupt and for his own personal benefit. he was forced to disban his activities. everything he has done, every aspect of his life. business, charity has been by federal, criminal and civil courts has been resoundingly condemned and he has had to pay out millions of dollars of fines. it is a pattern and practice of who he is. bringing shame to our country. the only time our capitol has been taken over by mob or violence was in 1814, due to the war under 1812. to me it is both. under stating the truth and successes of a president that served under one of the most difficult times to service, took over our country when it was on the brink after trump's precedency and the pan demic and brought us some of the greatest successes relative to other nations, peers, best economy on the globe right now and compared to what trump was and what donald trump has done in every area of his life. >> you said, senator, you have a lot going on, fair to say. you sit on the judiciary committee. i wanted to ask you about the supreme court. it seems like every week and it is growing in recent weeks a new scandal, there is is alito and the flags, there were the tapes are released of alito, sounds partisan i think it is fair to say. your committee report thursday week that clarence thomas took more trips that than we knew about on private plane. i can go on but i will stop there. it feels like a crisis to me. should the senate, would you like to hear the senate hear from the justices directly? would you be open to subpoenaing them if necessary? not a lot of precedent for that but we are in unprecedented times. >> a lot of these billionaires and activists to capture our courts and have been obviously successful in influencing them, these billionaires who are taking people on these trips, folks like crowe and others we have been trying to call them before the senate. the fact that it has fallen into the traditional partisan left/right divide is outrageous. it is not about partisanship t is the fact that the highest court in the land should have the highest ethical standards, not the lowest. the fact that senators and congress have higher ethical standards on our behavior than the supreme court which literally the whole idea of avoiding appearances is literally written in ethics the fact that now we have had people like clarence thomas receiving millions of dollars worth of perks and benefits from billionaires who have strong right bends. it is absolutely unacceptable. it should be condemned by all americans. this is a crisis of our institution. and the justices involved who are not even willing to recuse themselves in the case of alitot. is shameful. we are going to continue to speak out about this, we are going to continue to call out the truth and try to use the committee ultimately to bring about the change that all americans on both sides of aisle really do want. that is that the highest court in the land should have the highest standards and judges that abide by it. >> to your point, they continue, they are continuing to hand down opinions, right? as this ethic's crisis unfolds. friday overturned a ban on bump stocks which are used, for those that are not aware, help guns fire more quickly. there is a credibility crisis and extremism crisis, what is your reaction? you have done so much and spoken out about gun violence that decision on bump stocks. >> the worst mass shooting in american history, all of our country's history was a man with a bump stock that over 11 minutes fired over 1,000 rounds. that bump stock allowed him to convert his weapon into a mas firing others multiple-round shooting gun that wounded over 500 people killing 58. it was, it was a horrific incident. my mom lives in vegas and the terror and the horror of that incident compelled president trump to call for the ban of bump stocks. i think sotomayor was right, it talks like a duck, it walks like a duck, it is a duck. it is effectively a machine gun. this is startling, a supreme court so out of step with our country. this is not controversial. the people on the left and the right a republican president called for the end of these devices in the wake of the worst mass shooting in our country. the horrors that it brought about, this t should not be allowed in our nation. >> you know, every day i am scared when our kids are sent off to school. given how available these guns are and bump stocks across the country. i want to ask you about ivf. this is an issue that has unfortunately, not controversial, popular, so many women are able to have children because of it, introducing a bill. protections that got a vote this week. it failed. i think it is important to restate how popular it is to make people be parents all but two republicans voted against it. for people wondering out there, what the heck is going on. why would anyone oppose this. why would the republicans oppose the bill? >> reporter: republicans, democrats all agree, this erosion of reproductive rights is up acceptable. majority of americans believe in roe v. wade, and access to mifepristone, 90%, say we should have access to ivf. our legislation was very basic. it said number one we need to protect these rights at a time we saw in alabama, extremist groups and legislatures are trying to take them away. number 2. ivf. it is very expensive. the miracle having children should not be accessible to those that are wealthy or pay the $10,000, more insurance carriers should cover that and finally, in a way that should of compelled more people to stand up and support it. that military folks often exposing themselves to conditions or injuries that could prevent them from having children should support our military personnel to freeze their sperm or their eggs and have access to this treatment that can enable them and their families. often family that have two, three, four, five generations of military service, allow them to access the dream of having children should they need ivf. a basic bill. this would stop in its tracks d not get a debate in congress by republicans that do not represent it. so, we near a crisis in this country. we are going to continue to stand up and fight for women's reproductive rights. it is going to play out in this election. what kind of people are we going to elect?
