ma'am, where are you at? >> she was on a cell phone somewhere on the outskirts of town. >> she is pinging on county road and she's extremely out of breath. it sounds like she's running and she's crying saying she needs a police. >> seconds later, the call dropped out. >> hello? ma'am, are you there? >> what was she running from? and what had happened on this texas country road? those questions would be answered quickly. >> all i could do was cry because i thought oh, my god, this cannot be true. >> it was the y and the secrets at answer dragged out of the darkness that were so much harder to comprehend. when you get a call, what is it usually? >> like any other warrants, thefts. reckless drivers. >> not that night. not on september 9, 2016. according to the running gasping woman on the phone, someone had been shot. it was happening in royse city, texas, 31 miles from dallas. >> somebody shot is a major call. >> the officer of the pd rushed to the scene. his dash cam rolling. >> what's going on? >> my husband has been shot in the head. >> the woman's name was chacey poynter. he took me to the road where he found her. >> she seemed frantic. she said her husband had been shot. i put her in the back of my car. >> have ac. have ac. stay here. >> the shooter could be out here somewhere? >> yes. up auteur in the safety of my car and ran down the road to find the victim. >> he and issues deputy who pulled up at the same time ran half a mile down kelly road 2595. >> that's a long way on foot in the dark. you have no idea whether the shooter is behind one of these trees are waiting for you are running away? >> halfway down the road an abandon pickup truck. we kept going. >> we continue running down the road. we can see headlights through the tree line. we come around the curve. our duty weapons are drawn in giving the orders let me see your hands. headlights in our eyes. what is inside the vehicle is unclear until we get closer. once we get closer to the vehicle and saw nobody around it, suspect-wise, we saw victim inside a car. >> a man slumped over in the drivers seat. he had been shot in the head. >> it was evident he was d.c.'s. >> his partner was also called to the scene by a dispatcher. >> i made a joke to her, said, what you have, a murder? she said i think so. oh, i got to go. it doesn't happen that often. >> the last murder was years ago. >> i knew i had to respond pretty rapidly not knowing what we had. >> he called for backup because the shooter or shooters remained on the loose. >> everybody was on point as far as keeping their heads on a swivel. we didn't know who or how many were out there. >> while he waited for their loan detective to arrive, he took chacey to paramedics who responded to the scene. >> calm down. breathe slow. was anyone else out there with you? >> it made my blood boil. i think i was shaking when i heard this stuff. >> bob's family said the defense case bore no resemblance to reality. prosecutors agreed. is there any credible evidence at all that chacey poynter was abused by her husband? >> no. >> no er visit? >> no. >> there is nobody else who has ever said they saw bob even get mad. he has been described as a big teddy bear. >> they did find plenty of evidence that chacey wanted bob gone. >> she's kind of fishing around for multiple men to commit this murder for her. >> that is right. it turned out michael garza wasn't her only lover. in the months leading to the murder, she had been juggling three other boyfriends. detective burke brought them in for questioning. >> well, it's a lot of it was for sex. >> along with frequent meet ups for sex, two over lovers told police she shared the story of abuse that she claimed to have suffered at the hands of bob poynter. >> she did tell me that he had hurt her a lot. there was a lot of abuse going on. he never would leave marks because he did not want a trace. >> she would meet these guys and they would be interested in she would immediately start playing -- >> the victim. >> my husband is beating me. i'm in this terrible marriage. maybe there is something here with you and me? >> exactly she plays the victim and manipulates. >> among her stable of men were a couple of firefighters. they were not, however, from her husband my ski fire company. that was apparently where chacey drew the line. to one of his firefighters, a man named danny, she texted this about her husband. i wish he'd run out of air in a fire. to another named sean she texted, i only have one way out of this and it's not going to happen anytime soon. minutes later he texted, yeah, not an option. then this exchange. i hate him so much she texted shawn.'s response? shoot him. she replied, i don't look good in orange. >> chacey was looking for somebody beside the three she had been involved in and michael garza was a perfect guy who comes along. >> looking for somebody to do her dirty work. >> absolutely. >> the same day she was traveling home with bob from mexico, she texted garza. me more than anyone wants him gone.'s reply? well, it can happen. before the trip to mexico, bob had already suspected that chacey was unfaithful. >> he would say chacey is losing weight but he slipped one day and said but she's not doing it for me. >> that is not a good sign. it's when they return from the trip that he started taking steps to end their marriage. he contacted his attorney via facebook. not divorce hopefully? it's looking like it. i have tried and tried but i think i want to file first and keep custody. do you think she's seeing someone as? kind of do think so but a lot of lies lately and i am tired of it. prosecutors said divorce was the last thing chacey wanted because the couple had a prenuptial agreement. bob had insisted on it and so chacey believed she would not get a dime if they split. >> he has over a six figure income as a fire captain. he works a lot of side jobs. there is no way she can support herself. >> that ruled out divorce. >> on the other hand, bob suddenly died, chacey would be flush with cash, just months before the murder. she had convince bob to maker the beneficiary of his life insurance policy. >> $680,000 in a lump sum. >> you think robert essentially signed his death certificate the day changed his insurance? >> absolutely. >> they believe when chacey found out he made contact with the attorney, she knew she had to act quickly. >> she had been planning -- >> the divorce caused her to put her foot on the accelerator. >> right. >> they say the murder was chacey idea not garza and all about the money. that is wide, just before trial, they raised the charge against her again to capitol murder. now, the jury had to decide. if they found she had killed bob for money, the sentence would be life without parole. if they believed any of chacey's varied stories , they could set her free. when the verdict is announced, are you looking at her? >> we all were. >> what did she do? >> she was looking down. the firemen were all there. we clenched our hands. >> guilty of murder but crucially, the jury did not find that chacey did it for the money which could mean a much lighter sentence. >> my heart dropped. >> mine too. >> i thought it was clear she did it for money. i was petrified she would get like 10 years. >> the jury sentenced chacey to life in prison with the possibility of parole. she will be at least 59 before she can be released. >> if she's one of those people who doesn't have remorse, i don't know. >> you will live with it. >> it took me a long time to get over his phone calls that were not coming through. >> her phone still rings, but now it's a firefighters who work with her son. >> he always told me, if something happens to me, you will have a second family. i said really?
