possibly return to the white house despite in impeached and indicted and convicted of a crime. immediately after the jury delivered the verdict on thursday, the former president began his disinformation campaign for might outside the courtroom. he has sought to undermine the conviction by proclaiming the real verdict will be on november 5th by the people. trump speeches are short on substance. sometimes they can be revealing of his mental state, especially after big moments like this. the morning after the jury convicted him, he gave remarks from trump tower. but instead of beginning with comments about the trial, he opened with the xenophobia claim. >> when you look at our country what is happening where millions and millions of people are flowing in from all parts of the world, not just south america, from africa and asia and the middle east, and they are coming in from jails and prisons and they are coming in from mental institutions and insane asylum's. >> this has been part of his playbook from the beginning. when he deflects from his own problems, he uses immigrants as a scapegoat. and when he's really feeling political pressure, he escalates the rhetoric more as he did later. >> you have china with in the last few months, 29,000 people came, and i looked at them and they look like perfect soldiers. there almost all male from 19 to 25. it looks like a recruiting exercise. they have propane stoves and cell phones, the best you can buy. i said what's going on, it looks like they're building an army in our country.>> the asians have the best cell phones. his anti-asian statements are irresponsible and as we saw, they are dangerous. but more disturbing are claims that he is seeing these tens of thousands of people coming in and suggests that they pose a danger to the country. during the speech he escalated the rhetoric about judge merchan. >> you saw what happened to some of the witnesses that were on our side. they were literally crucified by this man, who looks like an angel, but he's really a devil. he looks so nice and soft. he always seems like a nice man. unless you saw him in action.>> the judge has been the target of many baseless conspiracies that are fueling a round of threats. and trump supporters are launching an assault against the anonymous jurors who convicted the former president. to say this is unbecoming of a leading presidential candidate would be an understatement. it's worth reminding people how unhinged and self-serving donald trump is. joining me now is molly jong- fast and jennifer rubin. both women are msnbc political analysts. i don't know where to start. we just played a select few of those clips. i think you do have to play them from time to time to remind people that the he comes out and talks about 29,000 chinese soldiers and cell phones and the judge. he's not a normal person. >> the question is, is there selective amnesia when it comes to trump. are we truly the united states of amnesia as gore vidal used to say. to some extent, if you believe these polls, there's a certain amount of amnesia. i was glad they covered some of that press conference the next day and the day after. but it was interesting and so many lies were blatant. the idea that there is an army of chinese soldiers coming from mexico. it's important to unpack the lies. but you have to constantly fact check him otherwise this information goes on and on and his supporters repeat it. they have been desperately trying to spin this verdict in all different ways. they say it helps them and then the speaker of the house, number two to the president thing the supreme court should come in and overrule this verdict. it shows that they are panicked.>> if one is a low information voter, we've seen so many examples of repetition. people will say things that they hear them say. but we are talking about the speaker of the house and the brigade of politicians and everyone who wants to be his vice president. some very influential people who parrot exactly the lines about how it's a banana republic and a witch hunt and this was a political prosecution. >> let me first say that it's malpractice for the journalistic troops not to begin asking questions about his sanity. his mental and emotional sanity. he sounds nuts. maybe he's just an angry person, but he did not sound this disjointed five years ago, 10 years ago or even a year ago. he is emotionally unwinding, and the fact that the press does not cover him for any period of time where the average person can watch him and they don't raise those issues is inexcusable. as for these other people like congressman johnson, it's reprehensible. they are attacking a judge and a jury with no basis whatsoever. they are seeking to undermine and delegitimize the entire justice system because that is what fascists do. they undermined the rule of law and any source of power in any source of independent information that could block their leader from taking power. so when he does this, when marco rubio or all the troops that go on fox news say it's rigged and corrupt and the kangaroo court, they are assaulting average americans. the 12 people who sat on that jury who are now being threatened and living in fear of their lives for some period of time. for a judge, who by all accounts, was extremely measured. he could have thrown trump in jail for contempt. he withheld that through the motions that he did not go with the prosecution. this attack is not simply evidence of a cult, but it is something more pernicious and that is the attack on the entire concept of the rule of law. we had a former president had to sit in court and put himself at the mercy of the jury and was found guilty. that is what the rule of law is about and it is magnificent. because he got treated probably better, but no worse than anyone else. and that is the lesson we should take from this mp very suspicious of people who want to tear that down. >> we just heard from stormy daniels who thinks that trump should be sentenced to jail and should be performing community service. you wrote in a piece for msnbc that now that we have a verdict, there's a good chance he will play it as what he expected or wanted. and this morning he said he's okay with house arrest or jail time. so he's doing what he does. he spins it with, i'm good with that and we were talking this morning that he's tough and he can go to jail. he's not nelson mandela or martin luther king.>> his allies tried to pass this idea that he was like nelson mandela. asa hutchinson, john bullock, and larry hogan have said this is the rule of law. at least a few have said that this is what we need to do and this is how the american justice system works. but he's going to spin this. we know what he does because he's been doing the same thing for 8 years. >> one thing that is interesting is he does turn up the volume. when you think there's no more shock to be had, he says something more shocking. it's like the press conference he did. he brings up outrageous things and we don't how to make sense of. on one hand i don't want to be a people who says ignore him. on the other hand, how do you deal with the fact that he starts talking about 29,000 chinese soldiers with cell phones taking over the country. how to have reasonable conversations around why it's dangerous. we've seen a few more billionaires say they are backing donald trump. >> i would like every newspaper and every outlet in the mainstream media to employ two people. one an expert on fascism and a psychologist. because those people have experience in dealing with people like this. and first of all, someone is emotionally unbalanced and someone who aspires to be a strongman like mussolini or vladimir putin. all of these people have the same trademark signs. they have these rambling speeches. they threaten to and bluster and identify an outsider that's a threat to them. and this is a personal sign of his degeneration. and a sign that he realizes this is it. if he does not win and tear down this entire system of justice, he personally is washed up and his party is in deep trouble. so this air of desperation gets worse and worse as the water is circling in the drain. it is a telltale sign. and now we do have some polling. but it is reflecting what people think currently. and half of the independent voters in key should drop out. this is not evidence that it is improving him. when someone like mitt romney, god bless him, who said he stronger now, it's ridiculous. common sense would tell you that. and what was the one word that people who are those disengaged voters heard on thursday and friday? guilty. convicted. felon. and that is what is important. he's not stronger than god. he's a convict and a loser. it's weakness and injury. he cannot defend america. he cannot defend himself. and that's the message that the democrats have to get out. >> what you want is you want to debunk the lies, say the lies. and say there's not an army of chinese soldiers coming through mexico. and then use the quote in the middle and then you can talk about the autocratic trope that is being used. but you have to be careful. and tech companies have no regulation. they do whatever they want. but the more we can link to real sources and news, the more we can try to debunk the lies and that's the idea of a truth sandwich. >> we will have to provide all of that context you cannot take it out of context. thank you to both of you. both women are political analysts. still ahead, trump did not turn the republican party away from governing in hensley, but he turned it into his cult. i will talk about whether it can be turned back into a legitimate political party. and mexico is set to elect their first women president. and the truth about immigration. i will talk to the man who wrote the book on why successful sinusitis societies welcome newcomers. a slow went on, america found a scapegoat in immigrants blaming them for taking jobs and not assimilating into american culture. before the spill was enacted, this was published in the new york times in 1924. ameri, of the melting pot comes to an end. and then, hundred years ago, the president signed the immigration act of 1924. it banned immigration from asia and had low quotas limiting the number of people allowed from each country and limiting all immigrants except those from western and northern europe. the impact of the bill was extreme. the u.s. saw a sharp decline in immigration, which lasted for the next 40 years. as a professor wrote recently, communities that lost immigrants because of the 1920 quotas received significantly less investment capital from the countries where the immigrants would've come from and businesses invest less abroad as a result. the lack of investment equals fewer jobs. the 1924 quotas led america to lose out on thousands of foreign scientists. as a result native born scientists became 60% less likely to patent and companies suffered at decline in patenting. the architects of this claimed to be protecting american workers but it actually accomplish the opposite. at the height of the great depression politicians worried that american workers were being harmed by mexicans so the government repatriated one third of mexicans living in the u.s. that effort backfired resulting in fewer and lower paying jobs for american workers. 100 years later we find ourselves with a or debate about immigration. trump and the allies are stoking anti-immigrant sentiment using dehumanizing language and pushing the idea that immigration is the reason the u.s. is a nation in decline. as hernandez pointed out, the most progressive among us often have that positive view based on personal morals or an ethical obligation to help those in need and except the poor huddled masses. but even that point if you gets it wrong. supporting a increase in legal immigration is not -- immigration actively improves american society and their is tons of data to back it up. hernandez says, immigrants foster investment, create jobs, make us more innovative, reduce crime and successfully integrate culturally. yes, people want to emigrate to our country because of the possibility of a better life and social safety, but we should not just tolerate the idea of immigration as an act of altruism. we should embrace it it's integral to our position as a global leader in imitation and it's necessary for us to continue as a healthy and prosperous country. immigration and what we should do to change the broken system is at the front and center of the upcoming election. i will dive deeper into why this election will be so pivotal for immigration and the economic health of our country. i will be joined by this professor. seek hernandez. why successful society welcomed newcomers he will join me next. you caly, you'll also receive 15% off your entire hernandez, a professor at the wharton school. and the author of this book. the book comes out on tuesday, which is why we had to book for this. but then trump came out and made this speech on friday morning and after having been convicted, you would think he would give priority to discussing himself and his guilt or innocence. he started carrying on about 29,000 chinese people. the demonization of immigration has become -- in his worst moment that is what he does. >> yeah, i think what you are talking about is it's always been politically expedient to categorize immigrants as villains who steal jobs and threaten security or who are not assimilated. and that is common. even 100 years ago, as you mentioned, the interesting part to me is even those who are in favor of immigration don't have a good counterargument. they pose the victim narrative. the idea that immigrants are these poor huddled masses who need compassion and that will cost us a lot, it's the morally right thing to do. i've been researching this for 20 years and the evidence says that immigrants are neither villains or victims and in our own self-interest they are positive contributors to everything you want for economic prosperous community and a socially prosperous immunity and country. so we don't need to be afraid nor do we need to just have a moral argument. >> i want to separate those. to me the social benefit of immigration is interesting. i lean into the economic argument because that's where i'm from. you published a great op-ed and you say that democrats are losing some of the battle on this. but you also write that the number of visas we hand out is below what the country needs for economic humanitarian and other purposes. we don't replace the 700,000 working age people who died let alone allow the people needed to power and expanding and more complex economy. let's talk about this. this is facing most of the developed world. america has the ability to bring in lots of people because a lot of people want to come here.>> yeah. like i said, it's a hard nose self-interested argument. you want economic prosperous country and you want for immigration. think about what makes your local community prosperous. think of what your wish list could be. you want investment because those create jobs. you want innovation in terms of products and you want something culturally interesting. you want entrepreneurship. people starting new businesses and talented people. the evidence shows that they contribute positively to all of those. immigrants are 80% more likely than natives to start businesses. and those businesses create jobs. they settle here and firms invest. a simple example. one of the fastest growing restaurant change is a company from central america. super popular. they came to the u.s. to sell food to the central american immigrant community and they've created thousands of jobs not just for immigrants but natives and they've introduced new ideas and recipes and products that make our lives better. we have not even scratched the surface of innovation and other things.>> if we were talking about this in silicon valley, how do you counter the argument with trump and republicans it's not just the dehumanizing and language, but it's the idea that they are dangerous and criminal and that trickles down and people latch onto those things. is there a specific thing democrats should argue to counter that? >> about the criminality? yes. i mean, of all of the facts about immigrants that we have cut the clearest one by far the most unambiguous is it's not just immigrants don't commit crimes. they commit fewer crimes than natives. the group that has the lowest rate of crime of any type of drugs are property are undocumented immigrants. it is a myth. this is the political season so you're likely to see an ad about an undocumented immigrant who murdered or someone. but that is a huge exception. if we did the same thing for other people, we would have a lot more ads about people who are not immigrants.>> thank you for joining us. he's a professor at the wharton school and the author of the truth about immigration. this is an important book for people the violence against political candidates and those seeking office wants aspiring political candidates. the next president will have to deal with the issues of public safety. immigration will also be a big issue. back to you. still ahead. in 2016 trump said i could stand in the middle of fifth avenue and shoot someone and i would not lose any voters. since then he's been impeached twice, found liable for sexual abuse and convicted of 34 felonies. we will talk about the future of the republican party when we come back. we've talked about trump's takeover of the republican party and watched as republicans who once to criticize him reversed themselves. we saw them in 2020 skip writing a policy platform for their convention. the platform was then trump himself. and when he lost that election, we saw republicans support him to overturn the election. even after the insurrection republicans returned to his side and then, when he found himself on the wrong side of felony charges, republicans, elected republicans, including the speaker of the house, rushed to the courthouse to services mouthpiece. and now, the republican party is taking up his fight against the rule of law. the gop once called themselves the party of lincoln. but it wasn't about the leader. it was about their leadership. about what they did to change america. the party of trump is not a party of ideas. it is fealty to one-man. they spent the entire obama administration moving away from governing policy. trump arrived on the scene at the perfect time to exploit a moment of deep cynicism. but now that it is done and he's taken over, it's hard to see how they can ever become anything else again. joining me now is a political contributor. author of a book called the imposters. and senior advisor at the lincoln project and the author of conspiracy to and america. good morning to both of you and thank you for being with us. there is something that worries me. and that is we have this project 2025. it seems to be -- it paints trump as the useful idiot. while we carry on about how there's no republican party, the heritage foundation has policies they want implemented that are worrisome. >> one of the most difficult things to grasp, at least for me, is the republican party is not a democratic institution, american mainstream party. it is an autocratic movement and that is how we must look at a. we can't judge it by normal political standards. one of the realities -- >> we got you back. go ahead. >> one of the attributes -- they always tell us what they want to do. and we have to look at project 2025 that this is where they want to take america. part of the difficulty we have is the language. how do we not sound alarmist. but i believe with everything in my being, that if trump wins this next election, it will be the last election we have that will resemble a normal election. >> one of the things you point out as they did not go from being a political party to a cult overnight. they have been moving away from governance for a period of time. take us through some of the history. >> when you look back at the point at which george w. bush left the office, they had an opportunity to set a platform, and instead of taking governing seriously, they became a party that was committed to saying every democratic priority, even the ones that they agreed with, the moment obama said yes, they said, no. at that point we had eight years in which republicans abandoned the idea of a governing party and we saw trump exploit the opportunity and take the party in a more authoritarian direction. it's hard to be optimistic about the future.>> but we have to dig up optimism somewhere. we spent too much time talking about and how to resurrect it and how to get a phoenix from the ashes. but we don't have a multiparty system. we don't have an extra party. there are a lot of republicans or conservatives who would like a normal home. so how does that happen? does trump have to fully be defeated and that is where the phoenix arises? >> you made a point yesterday. but you have to have ashes. this is why we have to burn the party to the ground. the answer to the republican party is to vote for democrats. it's to vote for president biden and get him reelected with a crushing margin. pain is the only teacher in politics. when republicans realize they cannot win national elections, even with the electoral college, that they are alienating a new generation of voters and the average suburban voters, at some point survival will kick in and they will change. but as far as optimism, it would take a long time. you have to beat them again and again. >> part of the issue is that trump is super transactional and he's using that to his advantage. we know that trump makes everything that much more obvious. if you donate to me, and i win, i will make sure your taxes go down. and we've seen billionaire donors lineup. people who said they did not like him or he was damaging to the party they line back up and say, we are on board.>> you look back at 2016 there were a lot of people who said, but we like him is he's not going to be like that. he's going to be able to spurn those tactics, and yet here we are watching him go to big oil and say you give me $1 billion to get me elected and i will give you everything you want. let's not forget there still some people -- you cannot get more elite than meeting with oil executives and offering them an opportunity to buy a deal. it is challenging assumptions that they need to rethink. >> but these are not low information voters. these are some of the countries brightest and most successful and prosperous people who fall for it. the rational words that make sense, and you have a long history as a conservative. you fortune five presidential races and elect governors and senators. it seems obvious to. why is it not obvious to others? >> well, i think it's a turning point in american history. you look like at the ceo of blackstone. it convicted felon? the ceo of blackstone is going to send a signal with thousands of employees in new york -- they would not hire him to work for blackstone. there is this crazy notion that a lot of ceos have that somehow they don't have a good enough deal and america trump wants the system in russia and it's a choice. and they need to wake up and act more like americans. >> it is worth reading the red notice. don't wish for things that you don't want. good to see both and i appreciate it. stuart stevens. and a producer on the rachel maddow show. he's the
