Weekend. Here the weeks top stories. Standing before congress and from of the same people who aided and abetted donald trump in trying to overturn the 2020 election the very Scene Of The Crime that is the january 6th insurrection, President Biden on thursday night, painted a picture of a Republican Party that has fallen so far that it no longer respects or adheres to the very basic norms of our democracy. Many of you are here on the darkest of days, we all saw with their own eyes the insurrectionists were not patriots, they have come to stop the peaceful transfer of st power. January 6th lies about the 2020 election and the plots to steal the election pose the greatest threat to you as democracy since the civil war. My predecessor and some of you here seek to bury the truth about january 6th. I will not do that. This is a moment to speak the truth and to bury the lies. Heres the simple truth. You cant love your country only when you win. Remember your oath of office, re defending to all threats, foreign and domestic. Respect free and fair hr elections. Make clear Political Violence has no place, no place in america, zero place. My lifetime has taught me to embrace freedom and democracy. A future based on core values, that defined america. I see a future where defending democracy, you dont diminish it. I see a future where you restore the right to our freedoms, not take them away. Ee i will always be president for all americans, because i believe in america. The president , speaking about things that used to not make it into spaces like this, because everybody agreed. Trump was mentioned 13 times in the speech, referred to simply as my predecessor but make no mistake, trump and the threat that he poses to democracy, looms large over just about every line of the speech. Er the New York Times describing the president s State Of The Union, unused unleashed and unyielding, mr. Biden seemed to relish the showdown. He made no aspiration to lofty rhetorical flourishes. He mentioned only in passing his unity agenda in a speech with almost no unity in it. Instead he conveyed the impression of a candidate itching for a fight. We will not walk away mr. Biden said early in his address. We will not bow down. He was speaking at that moment specifically of the fight against putin and russia but he seemed to also intended for the fight for his own presidency. President joe biden came out swinging against donald trump and the gop in a speech that laid out in the Blood Test Terms to date, the stakes in the upcoming election for our democracy and freedom at home and abroad, thats where we start today. I made a list of the first things he talked about, first he mentions is putin, nato, january 6th, Political Violence and mentioned abortion. Starting with putin, its a 90 10 90 of americans do not approve of putin. January 6th, again, among the general public, high 60s, low 70s in terms of people who dont approve what they saw, Political Violence was interesting. 60 of republicans or high 50s,r think it can be acceptable in some situations but as a general issue is another 60 to 70 of americans who oppose Political Violence. This was a speech designed to grab back the center of the country and say, this guy right here, you dont want to do that, folks. Its interesting, because as unpopular in some ways as joe biden is, a lot of the concerns about his age have dominated you know, the new cycle now for months but what he did last night was really important because he turned the tables and actually focused on the democratic agenda compared to the republican agenda and the reality is that on the issue, the democrats are winning on every issue. They have the agenda at the moment, that really represents many more americans, americans want guncontrol, americans dont want to have metheir righ taken away, they are against the overturning of roe v wade. So down the line, you know, the democrats have the more popular agenda, so joe biden reminded americans of that last night and he really comes off as someone who is empathetic and not a megalomaniac which is helpful because what he said last night is this isnt about me. This is about you, this is about american democracy. And we are going to fight for it and fight for the issues that you care about their going to improve your lives. And i think that actually is a winning message, compared to the doom and the gloom that we saw from republicans even though they are snickering last night, it came off as cynical me and small. It just invigorated him, i was so glad that they were la interactive, he just fed off it and i thought oh god, this is going on, but whatever he did, they just juiced him. We saw a fighter and americans are looking for a fighter. I think democrats had to see that. He needs to be doing this almost every day. He needs to be out there much more and theres no reason for him not to be if this is what hes going to look like, bring it on. I dont know how many of the old adages of politics still hold but at least when i worked on campaigns, if you are an incumbent, you need to the in election to be a choice, if its a referendum, its a no brainer. He laid out the choice expertly. I think thats right. I dont want to, you know, the states of the union, they have a couple of different audiences, theres the audience which is the viewers and voters and you can make a case on your agenda, choice versus the referendum issue, and those are effective if they are prosecuted over the course of days and weeks and months into the future. Theres the other audience thfo the State Of The Union which is the filter, its us, and the mainstream media, the partisan media, democratic insiders, republican insiders and those people have one thing they were looking at last night, none of the rest of this mattered. It had become a speech about, is joe biden capable of doing this, and you can talk about why we got to that point but that was the thing. Its a binary thing, he was ever going to come out and people go yeah, okay, he can do this, or not. Republicans made a huge mistake they set the bar at you know, hes a corpse, hes going to dribble on his shirt, this guy, hes, hes, not only did he clear the low bar but soared way above it in terms of the energy, the aggression, the aggressiveness, the prosecutorial nature, the speed of it, did he stumble a few times, yes although i will say he should be doing this all the time. It just was like, what you got was, you know, the New York Post headline, hes alive. And that is not a small thing in this moment where democrats are panicking, republicans are licking their chops, to walk home and have everybody go, okay, the idea that this guy is just feeble and incapable and make an idiot of himself in the race, that, at least for this news cycle, that is now gone. And you can tell its gone because the way the republicans decided to attack him. The speech was too partisan, hes yelling too loud, nobodys saying, nobodys saying, boy, joe biden looked old and feeble. Didnt hear that from anyone, even the far right people. It was also very politically nimble. If you have been lost in space, for the last 20 years in the last Campaign You Saw was the mccain and biden 2008 campaign and when you plopped down yesterday in front of the tv, you will not have known necessarily that this was a democratic president. He started out quoting Ronald Reagan talking about the civil war and world war ii. He then went on, i thought it was an incredibly aggressive note to use reagans words no against the people sitting in the chamber saying, you know, tear down this wall, you got a guy that says come on in. I also thought the moment that wasnt scripted, not only didnt hurt him but might have helped him and im sure its not that popular among some democrats but when he was mo confronted by Marjorie Taylor greenes stunt, it was a moment that he handled it pretty deftly. So i think, i think it did all the things that you said it ha did, to the filter and the democrats, that hes also speaking directly to nikki haley supporters who are the newest sort of coalition of ne never trumpers. I think that is correct. I think that nikki haley crowd, but i also think he spoke to some of the constituents, that he was beginning to have polling lower in the democratic field, not only just a priority. The priority because of turnout which is why, yes, he spoke to the issues at the top that are 9010 but then he circled back around and reminded young voters what he did around College Debt Relief and it was blocked and he found a way to do it anyway. He talked to black voters about this is the anniversary of letty sunday were people were beaten for their right to vote. I supported the john lewis voting bill and we need to do that again. He went and got the edges after he had gotten what was in the middle. And i think that i agree that though the bar was lower in terms of saying, like he was some guy that couldnt function, and i think the two things that were done, by him being able to handle Marjorie Taylor greene, if i was on their side and im a veteran protester, i would not have given them that last night. To sit in a chamber that had been disrupted and be disruptive, you are playing the script wrong marjorie, you wanted to act like we are not that and she played right into the stereotype of what he said, that they desecrated this particular chamber, and he handled it well, which showed le that he was alert, astute and anything but old. The other thing that people are missing, he was almost the last person to leave the chamber. I mean Everybody Else was running to go to bed. He was up there, how are you doing, how was your wife. He blew out of it out of the water. They had to turn the lights off. Really, eventually the speaker set it down because it was n getting close to midnight, biden was still there. They eventually started to turny the lights, it was like at a party where they start to flash the lights, its time to go s home. They almost had to push him down the aisle to make him le speak. This is not a guy who is tired and old and cant make it. You know what this is like at the state of the unit, how many times did you tell george w. Bush, lets work in some ad libs, no one does that, doesnt matter how verbally dexterous a person is. The State Of The Union is a scripted speech. Biden went Office Script two dozen times, they were scripted off script moments, he n would looking for opportunities to engage with republicans, like it was question time in the british parliament. This is where im going to say this, and when they say this i will hit back. I thought, again, to your point, the notion that he not only so that he had energy and verve but thats a High Wire Act. When you start having the interactive thing on Live Television at this level, thats a High Wire Act for any politician and he held it fine. D he handled it fine because thats more comfortable for him. He is more of a you know, prime ministers questioning, then he is, you know, a teleprompter speech. And a creature of that chamber. Somebody who is comfortable in that room. So i hope there is something there about otrs or i know jen psaki was saying, he loved it when the members were on air force one, most president s let me say this, that is not a sentence that most would say. You know, my shift ended at the end of the speech so when he was a half hour late i was like youve got to be kidding me. But they should put those people in and they werent all democrats, he was just as juiced with the republicans that hes no long time. I was watching and i was trying not to look at social media because you can get pulled down a rabbit hole, but i was trying to watch the republicans, and there was something so tragic about, i was gone for four months and always screw up his name, mike johnson, thats who a we are on . And Lindsey Graham by the end, it was like he was watching mccain, he was defying, it was like a chuckle and a look of, he was truly amused, so to see the republicans i wont even say capitulate because they just, you can tell from their faces that again, im sure they were back to attacking him by other by the 11 00 hour but it was clear that everybody knew that this was a good speech and a good moment for the president. They also know ntmany of the are engaged in line, daily. They are sitting there thinking , oh yeah, he is speaking the truth, we are not going to say that but we will sit there like disgruntled schoolchildren in the back of the room, snickering and then there was the bizarre moment where langford is sitting there, you know. Because ttits true. Its true as President Biden talks about the Immigration Bill that he worked for months a to secure, you know, the most Conservative Bill in years, that the republicans are now jeering, so kind of the surreal moment was astounding and it mo reminded me of that moment many years ago when i think it was joe wilson saying to barack obama, you lie this was almost an inversion of that. You have langford sitting there, saying, you know, its true. He speaks the truth. Occasionally you will see of runaway game at the nba, and its a 20 point game and you will see you the other team, when like lebron james does an incredible dunk the other team they all like to be applauding, theres a little bit how, we are not going to win this game and we will get them tomorrow but that was an incredible dunk. Im not comparing joe biden to P Lebron James but with Lindsey Graham there was a little bit like, this was not our night, as this is his night, he beat us, we will get him tomorrow but theres a little bit of that appreciative sense of like okay, we will fight this tomorrow, not today. Primetime weekend to continues. Ahead with my colleague joy reed. President biden called out model republicans hailing the violence from january 6th as heroes, to real heroes join me next, stay with us. Have Heart Failure with unresolved symptoms . Ahh during last nights State Of The Union address, President Biden did not shy away from calling out republicans on the need to defend democracy at home and abroad, he highlighted the events of january 6th which took place in that very chamber where as the president described it, Trump Supporters placed a dagger to the heart of american democracy and then biden took trump and barret republicans to task for whitewashing those events. Lets be honest the threat to democracy must be defended. My predecessor and some of you here seek to bury the truth about january 6th. I will not do that. This is a moment to speak the truth and bury the lies. Heres the simple truth, you cant love your country only when you win. Joining me are two of the heroes of january 6th, former d. C. Officer Michael Fanone and former Capital Police officer harry dunn, who, by the way, is running for congress in maryland. Thank you for being here. Michael, we have talked a lot about just, you having to process kind of the events of that day, in real time as things are still happening in the chamber and i wonder, if you watched the State Of The Union, what you made of it, if you watched it, seeing President Biden call out those members to their faces . Obviously, i thought the president s words were appropriate. Im glad to see that his Reelection Team is starting to take the threat of democracy seriously. And that they are allotting appropriate time for the president to address that threat to the American People. Unfortunately, i feel as though many of the institutions that are in place in this country to detect this from an insurrectionist, like the former president , they are failing us, or simply not in position to save us from ourselves. I think eventually, its just going to come down to the American People at the ballot box, voting to place President Biden in office again, and keep donald trump out of office. Theres a consensus that you are absolutely correct. We had the same conversation. How about you because you worked in that space. When i was watching i had an eerie feeling seeing regular business being done at essentially the Scene Of The Crime. I want to know what you thought about President Bidens remarks. Its good to be here with you, this is the first in in the 15 years that i havent been working in a Law Enforcement capacity in a State Of The Union. So to watch it, let me jump back, you talk about the trump surrender never surrender, hes former Law Enforcement, its gross to policing but i think the speech by biden was right on the money and not letting people forget about what happened and thats part of the reason why im running for congress right now, harry dunn for congress, we need people to continue not just the president , but for people to stand up and push back against the lies that are continually, three years later being spread about what happened that day, i applied Michael Fanone, im encouraged by the work that he is doing, sergeant canal, so many people are still showing up and not letting this go away, Michael Fanone testified last week before the Weaponization Committees and we need to continue to show up and its not about these institutions, but they are run by the people and the Supreme Court, what they are rolling about in colorado clearly shows that its going to be on us American People to save democracy. Primetime weekend continues again with my colleague, chris hayes. Chris hayes. Its the only medication that can a migra when it strikes and prevent migraine attacks. Treat and prevent, all in one. Dont take breztri more than prescribed. Breztri may increase your risk of thrush, pneumonia, and osteoporosis. Call your doctor if worsened breathing, chest pain, mouth or tongue swelling, problems urinating, vision changes, or eye pain occur. Cant afford your medication . Astrazeneca may be able to help. Ask your doctor about breztri. Are you better off today than you were four years ago . The answer for hardWorking Americans across the country is a resounding, now. No, its a resounding, yes and itll be more resounding each day we go forward in this year. Its a resounding yes because we are not entering the pandemic phase of covid with a negligent president was more interested in saving his poll numbers than his issuance lives. Trumps entire Election Strategy depends on completely, what happened four years ago, annihilating 2020 from public memory and he is helped in that strategy by the fact that we all want to forget what a disaster 2020 was because it was a disaster and it worsened many ways by donald trump. That moment four years ago today would only be the beginning of the most incompetent mismanagement of a crisis since huber hoover and the great depression. A year that was shot through with nothing but chaos and turmoil, illness and death donald trump tweeted while the country burned. Lets just go back there for a second. Thats why joe biden won the 2020 election. The promise was that democrats would restore someone to leadership who thinks about what is best for the country. Who would restore the economy by investing and Working Americans and rebuilding things from the middle out. And President Biden managed the return to public life. Our economy is stronger now than almost any expert predicted it would be. Thats thanks to the Stimulus Spending on things like public infrastructure, as biden promised during the campaign, sometimes on a partyline vote. Republicans cannot run against any of that so instead, they are trying a Campaign Slogan of Make America 2019 again. Listen to tim scott celebrating trumps win last night. President trump spoke to the voters today across our country, republicans, democrats and independent voters about the future, we have to go back to that future, 2017 to 2020. No, its not a threeyear term, trump was president from 2017 to 2020 2021. I promise you i was there. They want you to chop an entire year off of trumps term as if he gets his political modem for the catastrophe that was the end of his presidency. The Freezer Trucks packed full of bodies and they want you to ignore the final months of 2020 when he attempted the first two in our countrys history culminated in the deadly insurrection. Trump is now running to finish the job he started on january 6th and if he is elected, he will pick right back up where he left off. Hes not going to govern like its 2019. He will govern like its january 7th, 2021. My good friend is with me, alex wagner and rachel maddow. Its great to have you here. I truly lost it when Elise Stefanik said that. I thought are they really going to do this and are they confident enough that they can pull off the are you better, because it seems like even if you dont blame trump for the worst of the pandemic, like yeah we are all better off. Even if trump had never been president , under joe biden right now youve got the best job market since the 1960s, unemployment below 4 , youve got the best covid economic recovery in the world, youve got more people with Health Insurance than ever before in american history. Youve got Violent Crime at a 50 year low. If trump was still running as the former host of the apprentice, right now, telling people like oh these biden years have been awful, havent they . Thats a weird sell to a country that is experiencing life under joe biden that has all of the right economic metrics. So, you have to tell people, dont remember 2020. I think covid walloped everyone, but i went back and looked at my coverage for years ago when i saw that you flagged this, and when i was talking about four years ago was Mick Mulvaney at cpac Telling Everybody that the liberal media had a up something about Covid To Make Trump look bad. We can do that again, sure. Put him back in there. I feel like you really hit on something that is not talked about enough, which is, the way in which we as a country have not dealt with the trauma of covid. 100 . It was a seismic event, who would want to go back to the fear and the death and the disinfecting groceries. Its a textbook trauma response. I made a photo album of the year, im going to want to forget this and i need to remember that we were masking outdoors. And in that same time, Joe Biden Ran for president. We also cant forget that because the lessons from that campaign are totally different lessons than the needs than the one he needs to apply in this. I was on the Campaign Trail with joe biden, there were a lot of mediocre events and then there were none. Thats a good point. He is not a great campaigner. Hes been a really effective president. And the distance between those two things need to be reconciled, in a year when, hes got to be kind of good at campaigning and hes got to do something that is incredibly complicated which is to get america to remember what life was like in the rearview. We are not good at that in this country. Nikki haley, her campaign for all its faults, one of the things she did was cut montages of trumps presidency to remind people what it was like. Thats something they can steal from her because she has tried to remind people about what the chaos candidate was like. Instagram reels, of trump telling people to drink bleach and the cdc heads, shaking their heads quietly in the press room. Its staggering the mismanagement of one of the most, you know, seismically dramatic events in modern america. When we come back, a look at the economy and what the white house is doing to lower costs for everyday consumers. Evu e s meet the jennifers. Jen x. Jen y. And jen z. President biden is doing what he, as the president can do to improve the economy for everyone and making a lot of progress negotiating drug prices, drilling more oil than ever before. Those are fact that i just gave you. His latest target, credit card late fees. This week the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced a cap on fees for late payments, they say they will bring the average fee from 32 bucks down to Eight Dollars and it would save americans more than 10 billion a year. The president does not have the ability to wave a magic wand and make the economy better but weve made extraordinary economic strides since the pandemic. Weve had a recovery better than any other developed country in the world. But lets talk about what the president is doing. Things like this crusade against junk fees. You already quantified it, its tens of billions of dollars is already canceled. People dont realize the magnitude of that. He cant wave a magic wand and stop certain things from happening. The average credit card Interest Rate in the united states, its about 24 . Thats usurious. Youve already lost us with you serious and high yields, heres the question. You and i both know what the president has done. How does he communicate it to the American People. Open up my credit card bill, great, my fees are lower than they have been. How will i know the president did that . They have to bang the drum. They have to flood the zone and they have to start now. I would not be waiting until we get closer to the election. The Unemployment Rate is under 4 for the longest stretch since the 1960s. We have not seen anything quite like this. Minority and implement at record lows, female and implement at record at record lows china is probably growing more slowly than we are. I think they have to hit this hard, from a political perspective if i were giving them advice, i would do it every day with a wide variety of Administration Members and not let up. Lets talk about high Grocery Prices because that is one lingering and challenging thing for people that they face every day. What are the president s options here, he really cannot do much. I think thats right, i think you know, to really backup, if you think about where americans are feeling it, Grocery Prices are the most salient because most people go to the Grocery Store at least once a week and Grocery Prices are up by 25 pay thats a lot. Things are expensive. My friends text me and say they feel it. You know one thing that has gone super underrated that this administration has done is that for the 40 million americans who received food stamps or snap, those benefits have actually on average, increased by more than double the rate of the increase in Grocery Prices. And thats not talked about enough. I think the Biden Administration hasnt said enough about it. Into your point, they have to be out there saying this, thats a huge thing, for 40 million people. Primetime weekend continues ahead, with my colleague, lawrence odonnell. Otezla is also approved to treat psoriatic arthritis. Dont use otezla if youre allergic to it. Newly elected senators can often feel intimidated, the first time they rise to speak in the senate chamber. Almost all of them do. When senator schiff does that next year, rises to speak in the senate chamber, it will not be his first time. He has betrayed our National Security and he will do so again. Hes compromised our elections and he will do so again. You will not change them, you cannot constrain him. He is who he is, truth matters little to him. Whats right matters even less and decency matters not at all. Leading off our discussion tonight is senator elect adam shiff, congressman shift, i know its premature but i also know, its california and i know its going to happen to steve garvey, and so, here we are. That moment, and those days, on the senate floor, as an Impeachment Prosecutor and Donald Trumps first Senate Impeachment trial. How much did that come up, when you were talking to voters in california because i remember thinking at the time, how powerfully you were delivering that prosecution and how prophetic it turned out to be, and how it must have been registering in the minds of people watching . Lawrence, i found on the Campaign Trail up and down the state, really, two things motivating voters. The first run first one was yesterday deep concern about the possibility of a return to the madness of donald trump and they wanted somebody in the senate who knew how to fight him and defend our remark to democracy, even if the worst came to the worst. So, steve garvey, your opponent, has admitted to voting for donald trump twice. What else to california voters and what else will they learn about steve garvey between now and november . A great deal. Hes been very unwilling to say too much about his views because he knows they are completely out of step with california but we know that he shares the maga views of the border crisis and demonizing immigrants, we know that he is not going to defend reproductive freedom or seek to restore it, notwithstanding his protestations to the contrary in this is someone who supported a constitutional amendment to ban abortion and we know hes not going to fight for common sense Gun Safety Legislation and we know hes epically happy with the minimum wage being seven dollars, doesnt want to see it raised. We know hes not going to fight for an economy that works for everyone. So the contrast will be sharp for california voters and we will do everything we can to make sure that california voters know this and while i appreciate your optimism, lawrence, my view has always been, run scared or run unopposed and im not running unopposed. I get it, i understand it. In the senate, you will and discussions with Chuck Schumer and some chairman, you will end up with Committee Assignments which it turns out are much more stable in the senate, they dont kick people off committees in a partisan way the way that they have done in the house of representatives. Would you want to go back to the Intelligence Committee in the senate where you served as chairman in the house . I would love to, but when i want to do also, lawrence, because of the phenomenon you mentioned which is as big and as important as californias, we get the same number of senators as every other state. I want to talk with Senator Padilla and compare what committees that he is sitting on and try and determine how i can add the most value for californians, if im lucky enough to emerge in november, successful. I want to make sure that im in a position to deliver for the country, but i certainly love the issues and the Intelligence Committee and am also a Senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee and want to play a role if i have the opportunity to make sure that we restructure the Supreme Court that we have term limits, that we have an enforceable code of ethics. So theres a lot i want to do. As the Biden Campaign looks at the country, california is a place where you go to raise money, its not a place where you have to go to campaign and its not a place where they have to spend any money on Tv Advertising because biden and harris will win california easily and all of those electoral votes, but what are the lessons of political concern in california that you think translates to other states that the Biden Harris Campaign should be thinking about and that other Senate Campaigns should be thinking about . Real qualityoflife issues, and youre right, in a normal world, someone with joe bidens record should be coasting to reelection. Hes done more than any president to address some fundamental inequities in our economy but nevertheless, there are some problems that have been decades in the making and which people continue to work harder than ever but any struggle to get by. And these very downtoearth issues, you know, how my going to afford a place to live, why do i have to commute two hours to work, isnt there a better way to do this on the Campaign Trail . I talked about my dad who was a traveling salesman, made 18,000 a year, and my folks bought our first home for 18,000. It shows you how much life has changed. No president has done more to try to address that but he has to acknowledge what hes done, and hes got a lot to brag about but also, the work ahead and how hes going to fight to make the economy work for everyone whereas donald trump, like we saw, will fight to make the economy work for donald trump.
