He has turned this, the state of the union, into an interactive speech. It was difficult to sit through. Spare me. These guys are complaining, there was no unity. Green was on the floor wearing a maggot hat. This was a happy war. He gave not only as good as he got, but better. They call it Super Tuesday for a reason. We like the rematch. And those beyond it who did not support him. We will take back our country. You cannot love your country only when you win. Good evening, i am Stephanie Ruhle. It has been quite a week. Donald trump is now the presumptive public a nominee. We saw a fiery state of the Union Address from President Biden. He touted his own accomplishment but also made it clear, he was warning us about his and assessors record. My predecessor, a former republican resident tells putin, quote, do whatever the you want. That is a quote. A former president actually said that. Bowing down to a russian leader. Some of you here seek to hide the truth about january 6th. This is a moment to speak the truth and bury the lies. You cannot love your country only when you win. My predecessor was determined to see roe v wade overturned and he was the reason and he brags about it. I know who we are as americans. And with that lets bring in our nightcap, a spectacular one. A vanities they are special coronet and host of the fast pollick tics eight i know you want to go first, molly. You are already taking notes. Like getting extra credit before we started. I will go to you, first. It was clearly a Big Night For The President last night. What was your take we. First of all i love to be right. For so long i was like the guy is good and you will be shocked. There was a moment where i was like if i am wrong, this will be embarrassing. I was really happy. I thought he did a great job and there were some lines that were really good. His delivery was really good. But there were things that stuck out. You cannot only love this country when you win. Which he said before but is a good line and the only republican clapping, mitt romney. Right . So many times we talked about things the republican most likely to endorse joe biden. And one of the few that believes that what we are supposed be doing in this country, larger democracy. I thought that was good. Also, he said if you dont want money for your districts we will take it back. A lot of things where i was looking at johnson, and he could not clap like taking the lead out of the lead pipes. He could not clap for lets have every thirdgrader in america reading. I am sure everyone could give that one a round of applause, especially if you are about family values. Maia, i know ahead of the speech he wanted the president to urge people to understand how important it is to protect democracy. Here he was in the room standing before congress where the insurrection happened three years ago. Did he bring that point home . Oh yes. I want to say, molly is always right and supported me from here. There you go. Just saying. Molly is right about how he delivered. To this point, he started with democracy in a interesting way and started with ukraine. I thought wait, what is he doing . Then it became very elegantly clear he was starting with a theme of democracy in the context of his sub theme, history. History not just history that we are in, in terms of our period but what history we will make. Also underscoring that i may be older but i will be wiser. He did that but he linked it and made it not just Foreign Policy issue. Which is why i was surprised. I felt that a bold move when most americans dont vote on Foreign Policy. He brings it into the insurrection and january 6th, which sets up his point about you cannot just love this country when you win. Not only differentiator but also what is at stake in terms of democracy. I will say is someone who also said i want to hear him say it, i want to hear him say it is about our right to vote. And i wanted to hear him say that john lewis voting advancement act, the freedom to vote act, the reason why we have big lies that are old lies in not even knew about fraud and that great seth meyers set up, before the state of the union when he reminds us of all of trumps indictments, but underneath that ms. The big lies to take an election. He is reminding us about that and the fundamentals of what lawmakers is and what leadership is and protecting democracy is and that it is all of us. When he looks at the Supreme Court and justices sitting there, okay . I was like he did not think you would get that out of joe biden . When he said yeah, Supreme Court, women are not without electoral power, no kidding . Also a message to talk about. Is what we need to do here. These are fundamentals, the first fundamental right we have ever had taken from us in the history of this country. That was what he made clear throughout. But he pulled it back to what it does for us on an everyday living point. Why does it change our lives . You mentioned the one, stephanie, that i was going to say, he talked about kids learning at school, things that democrats have dropped the ball on. Not making it about education for all of us but education can be a weapon to divide us and brought it back to government to do for us. He did talk a lot about the economy. You know i think he met people at their Kitchen Table. Last year when he talked about airline fees and hidden fees, that was last year and criticized a small ball. People feel terrible about the economy. Wall street is record highs and he never mentioned wall street. He is talking about Nickel And Dimed Americans and what his policies will do big picture and small picture. Tax policies and fairness, as he calls it. I think he reset the table on both the economy and overall agenda for the second term. I think he did well on the economy and also think that people are starting to feel less terrible about the economy. There is this big grand canyon that he has to kind of you know, navigate. Is not a needle and thread but a grand canyon of how people feel is really happening. Yesterday he reset the table for that. He took us to the Kitchen Table and reset it. I like that. He talked about Snickers Bars and you could see the snack machine. Besides saying he was speaking too loud and argued he could make this so partisan and political, wow, i think was Michael Steele that said, green was in full Campaign Gear and the last time donald trump gave a state of the Union Address, he literally gave a metal to rush limbaugh. So those are the arguments about President Bidens speech that republicans are giving, is that been conceding . He got that one. Lets be clear, not that he did something new here, he accepted the terms of the speech. Over the past decade the speech has changed. When i was growing up you sat there, like going to church. Right . That is not what it is like right now. Some guy will get up and call you a liar, Marjorie Taylor green will get up and wear her hat. That is what the state of the unions, political performance. That is important to talk about. We need to linger on how people were feeling a before the speech. Nervous. We were feeling this is someone older, also a rerun. We have been here before. Simultaneously dread and boredom. That is what we were going into this with. Dread, boredom, lack of enthusiasm. While mary, he set up for a great night. I think that performance was really important. He used the foils of the republican party. And stepped up to them. That was really important. I feel before the speech i was thinking about this election, kind of the way like i need to reset how i think about elections. I am used to falling in love with candidates. Maybe i need to think about this more like how the Wall Street Journal talks about marriage. Like we need to make a decision and except the tax benefit. Someone else spoke last night and whether she had a high bar or lobar, i think it is safe to say she did not clear it. Republican response. Alabama senator katie britt. The True Unvarnished state of our union begins and ends with this, our families are hurting. Our country can do better. I am almost afraid to continue because molly will set herself on fire. Her remarks were widely panned but her fellow alabama senator Tommy Turberville who said, saying she did a good job and picked as a housewife, not just a senator. Someone who sees it from a different perspective. First lets say this, there is nothing wrong with being a housewife, she is not a housewife. She is a u. S. Senator. But how telling is this, that this is where republicans want to leave us to. Lets go back to the kitchen where the mother is, the woman is, she should be flanked by children. Is that the message they were trying to send us last night . They are a mess, everything not trump in this party is a mess. You think he is not . He is a mess but at least he is a thing. Everything else is not trump but still trump why. They liked her because she was young and a woman and did not seem crazy. You cannot put Marjorie Taylor green there, there are not a ton of choices and and a lot of his republicans are retiring. I thought it was about twice to begin with because alabama has this ivf stuff, it still says that embryos are people. Completely crazy but it indemnifies you if you want to kill them because ivf is good business. Is so crazy. I think she was the only choice that they could find and she overacted. This republican state of the Union Response is cursed. From bobby tyndall, to marco rubio, never do it right. But this was next level. One group of voters that trump and biden need to focus on is nikki haley voters, centrist voters. Tb within the first two minutes of his remarks last night referenced ronald reagan. You look at his remarks in katie britt, who did a better job appealing. To those voters . The president speech was talking to democrats last night. He really was talking to democrats. Do nikki haley voters looking for something find it . I dont know. They dont think they have an end Donald Trumps land, at this moment. What changes the needle for those in the Middle Of The Road . I dont know if anything changed for them. They may still be in the wilderness. I think that is true about who the president was speaking to last night and what nikki haley voters are thinking. I have a different analysis of it, this is a turnout election. A turnout election, 2020 was a turnout election, 2016 was a turnout election. This was a question about who has a desire to show up, and who can show up. And i am saying both those things with intention. Because one of the things that the president needed to do that night, last night, his really energize his base. He needed to energize his base and i think he advanced the ball, if that is the Playing Field he was on. I think he was. The flipside is about who can, the fact we have already seen this. We know that Voter Suppression laws have been working and have been working on the very voters who are reliably democratic. It is an intentional strategy that is often, as we know and all these Court Rulings that we have been seeing, including this ideological Supreme Court, saying yes, we cannot let that stand. It is discriminatory. Is undermining. The center has said that 14 million call voters of color, would have voted. If the president did his job and trump keeps performing the way he is performing, more likely some of these folks dont turnout for the republican party. Not just whether they vote for trump but whether they vote. I think it is huge. This week i had on my show and i was shocked at how bracingly honest she was. She was like this reminds me of 2016. By the way i am behind joe biden 100 . And i was like how are you squaring this my spidey sense is tingling in this is looking bad. It is because of turnout, energizing young people. This whole time the pandit industrial complex, Mainstream Media, the new york times, they ran 57 pieces about how joe biden is old. I was like this guy a sharp. I see what theyre doing. I think you sharpen everyone is like no, you are a partisan. I was in a Staff Meeting where i was like he seemed sharp to me. When he went sharp i was like hello. He a sharp. A lot of this is a narrative that the gop brilliantly got the Mainstream Media to run with. The enthusiasm factor, why i did think there was two things. He does have a jens the issue. The historic turnout in 22, a success story, but i will say this, we should not blame them. We have to be careful about the narrative. It is the job of people running for office to win voters and their votes. I think of big part of what he was doing was saying look, i am going to deliver some things you care about and i think you he communicated that. Nobody is going anywhere. When we go back republicans keep talking about The Good Old Days of p President Trump. A lot of americans believe that things were better four years ago. Four years ago next week, before i came to office, the country was hit by the worst pandemic and economic crisis in a century. Remember the fear . Four years may not seem that long but in politics it is long enough to forget a lot of things. 65 of voters held a cbs news poll that the trump economy was good and 38 , good under President Biden. The reason trump is leading overall and some of those polls because americans have forgotten just how bad things were four years ago. President bidens economy is clearly outperforming donald trump. Why do you think it does not translate . I think covid19 stole our optimism. Four years ago today we were shutting things down and what we have lived through, it is stolen our ability to look at the bright side of things and we have been comfortable with discomfort. I can tell people the economy is strong and gdp is stronger and has been strong for 3d three years. We withstood a Banking Crisis and they say yes and give me a stink face. Nobody believes it, i am convinced covid19 stole our optimism and it will take time to heal. Republicans are playing up a contrast. Look back four years. Watch this. Are you better off today than you were four years ago . The answer for hardworking americans across the country is a resounding no. We have to go back to that 2017 to 2020, we want those four years, one more time. People remember how good things were when trump was president. People did better under trump than under biden. I do not need to rattle off the economic facts because i torture the audience. Four Years Ago School was closed, businesses were closed, the future seemed bleak. We have had a better economic recovery than any other country in the economic world. What do we think of this . Sadly it seems if you say a lie often enough people start to think it was true. I am not saying that is not because americans arent that is a brilliant way of saying it, we have lost so much of that optimism. But i think it is one thing President Biden did last night. Remind people of the amazing recovery we made. It was not just kids not in school and isolated at home. People were dying. Dying we were in a city that had Refrigeration Truck sitting on corners and to this day many of us still have the sound of sirens ringing in our ears because the sirens were ringing nonstop. Even when no one was in the streets. Because most people were too afraid to be in them. That is what we came back from. He also said when he talked about what was in the recovery, reducing Child Poverty by 40 . Like 40 . We were already the shame of the globe with our wealth and so many children going hungry. Keeping people in their homes because they were getting a check to make sure they were able to buy food and put it on the table. And make sure they did not become homeless. Those were things that we did. That is what we have to remind everyone. If you look ahead at what Donald Trumps proposed policies are, mass deportation, tariffs, inflationary. And then you look back and say what is it that people are so connected to . Corporate tax cuts, regulation, do people understand what he is looking to do from an economic standpoint . It will not help the everyday consumer. Most people see his strength that he projects and that is what they relate to. Honestly. I think something happened in the past four years with grocery prices, prices are 17 higher overall than they were in the beginning of 2020. Grocery of 25, gas prices are down, but groceries those cars are pretty fresh and that feeds into this feeling that things were better under trump. We didnt pay so much for ground beef and eggs. We can explain the reasons why and that inflation is moderating but that is not how every single time i am on the phone with my mother she is telling me the price of ground beef, eggs, chicken wings. Every time i talk to her. Not just the economy but think the chaos that ensued every single day that President Trump was in office. President biden has a warchest of Campaign Dollars behind him. If he spent the next 242 days using his social Media Outlets in every Media Outlets reminding the American People that donald trump said this and that, would that be the reminder people need . I think about tariffs, trump is promising to do that again. If you look at reports everyone agrees it led to unemployment. But then covid19 came in but biden kept them all on, too. The policy didnt change. He is promising to do more but we memory hold what happened because of it. Covid19 came in was a huge emergency. Eclairs the deck in your brain. You are not thinking about tariffs. Who did that before . You know . That is what is happening. Trump did a spectacularly bad job with covid19. And our death rate was significantly higher than it should have been. It is funny because i heard him give a speech where he said i didnt get any credit for covid 19. I am thinking you are lucky you did not get credit. There is more talk about what anthony felt she did or things we did wrong but you dont hear about a terrible job that the president did at the time. Evening knowledge we were going to pandemic. He could not have politicized it and said this is a pandemic and we dont know, a lot of stuff we do not know and learning as we go. Which was the truth. But instead he told his people that this was political. And they could take and not wear masks. These people were so taken advantage of. And many, many, Hundreds Of Thousands died. Also remember it was donald trump is a president who helped contribute to the rise of anti asian hate and violence. By calling it, associating it with china. He called it the china virus. All of that. What people experienced and felt an isolation and fear, all those things. For some folks it got turned completely into the most horrific way. Against you make me think back to four years ago. People are like i dont love joe biden i am not excited about joe biden. People were not excited four years ago. They were fighting against trump, fighting for competency, normalcy. Have we thought about that when we say joe is not exciting enough for me. We need to see more of joe that got elected in 2020. Policy makes good politics. He has got a lot of good policy. Right . You live in some of these states, they are building bridges. The chip stuff is boring but we have brought manufacturing back to america. That is a huge deal. I think there is a lot of good policy. If he gets out there and screams about it, i love the screaming and he should scream all the time. If he gets out and scream about it, that will go far. How does he balance . Looking forward and inspiring people. At the same time reminding them of where we were and what we had. You have got two incumbents running against one another. It is an unprecedented situation. It is an election with two incumbents, you know you have someone who has been running a race like trump against other people. Is he successful enough . All those things. I think what is interesting and we saw him giving that with the speech last night, something really important for us to Pay Attention to when it comes to the economy. There was an interesting article in the post a few weeks back when he said why cant democrats run the economy . They need to address the insecurity people are feeling. People see their groceries go up, the housing go up. Trying to buy a house is hard. He needs to get to fundamental insecurity. Trump does address that head on. He says title insurance. Fees. The white house thinks they can waive those without congress and save families 400 or 500 bucks. They use the levers, the levers of power without congress that will not help. They have to tell people they are doing it. When i dont have when my credit card fees are capped and i look at my bill, am i going to think joe biden did that for me . Like when i get a raise i say that is because i am so good at my job and not because of the government. They need to let him put his name on it and let them sign. He put his name on those checks then he gets credit for it but pelosi pushed it. People still feel pretty bad about inflation they live through. My dear fan friend Savannah Guthrie is out with an important book about faith. Is called mostly what god does. I sat down with her to talk about it. Watch this. I never thought i would be writing a book about anything. But certainly not faith. Even though faith is important to me and always has been and i grew up with faith. I have been in a relationship with god all these years. If you know me as you do, my friends and families and colleagues, everyone knows that about me. I was not looking to write a book about faith or religion but the opportunity came to me. I knew i had some thing good to say about god. It is a simple message, the book is called mostly what god does. And the rest of the sentence is god loves you. Is simple but not easy to believe but if you could believe it we would all be different. Everything would change. It is a love letter to god, this book. About the love letter he writes to us. People often put faith or religion in this separate category. Or think i am not a religious person. You say the opposite. Absolutely. Faith is for everyone and all of us who want to believe. Even if sometimes we come with a lot of doubt. I wrote a lot about that because i think faith and doubt are not opposites, they go hand inhand. Faith being exerted, advance, apathy and indifference are more polar opposite then faith in my opinion. I should give my disclaimer, i am no biblical scholar, i went to church camp and i dont think that counts. I am a regular person and not holding my life as any model to follow. Quite the opposite. This is about my mistakes and setbacks and disappointment and despair. But through it i found a relationship with god transcends that. You talk about god loves you, the way you love your children. And for people who do not have faith or people who are overwhelmed parents, they feel that they have no one and nothing. Is it that connection you hope people get to see. In that he is always here for you. It will be okay. I believe god is more about show intel then stone tablet from the mountain. Except for one time with moses. I think parenthood is the greatest show intel. The greatest metaphor god provided. There is no other relationship like it. The love is truly unconditional. The way we adore our kids, marvel at them, relish their accomplishments and delight in milestones. God feels that way about us. How do you know that . He says so. If you believe the bible. Is shot through the scriptures. The metaphor is fathered a child. Be joyous as Children Of God because that is exactly who you are. That is scripture. The point is that god takes great delight in us. Another word from scripture. When you think about how you love your child, and he let it in for a moment that god loves you that way, too. Not because he has to, he likes he. He enjoys you, adores you. If you could let that in for a moment, of course you would be changed. Not only that, stephanie, if you could really feel it, you could not keep it within, contain it. I know we have a broken world, there is a lot about this questions and doubt. I have those questions. By the way, there are no satisfactory answers on this life. One thing i realized is if we could really dip in and soak in and feel this love of god that is so profound and meaningful and specific to us, we couldnt contain it, we would spread it around. It would show up in our relationships. One by one maybe the world would change a little. Wow, my last question, because i think in this time of hopelessness, what is it that gives you faith . Well, faith is a leap. You know . I love to use my intellect and i do not think faith is anti intellectual.
