april. >> donald trump's full strategies delay, delay, delay. >> i think all the cases should be dealt with before november. because after that, should he become president, i don't think anything is going to get hurt. >> the two front-runners traveling to the southern border making dueling appearances. >> i plan -- stop playing politics, how about we get together and get it done? >> this is a biden invasion over the past three years. >> one man actually wants to work with republicans to get something done on the border, one man wants to keep an issue alive. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> good evening once again, i'm stephanie ruhle. it is just 249 days until the election. and there is one word to sum up this last week, delay. delay of the criminal court case against donald trump. delay as congress kicks the can again to fund the government. and delay on taking real action to fix our southern border. so let's get smarter and bring in our nightcap. nbc legal analyst and criminal defense attorney, danny cevallos is here. dan nathan with cnbc's fast money. bezels, michael gadamer credit strategist and former executive director of the new york state democratic party. and comedian jon few goal. all right, gentlemen. let's start with the many, many, many cases against donald trump. john, i turn to you first. the supreme court is now going to take up this immunity case for trump. >> yes. >> which no matter how they decide, they are getting more delays. right? >> yes. >> delay, delay, delay. has already won one given where we are? >> no. what? watch >> his best offense has been slow play this and that's exactly what's happening. >> these delays will all be forgotten. there is no way he wins this race with parma. look, the supreme court, i have to, say i'm convinced, they're the best court money could buy. seriously. bribed back better. bribed back better. he's gonna get everything he wants from them. when you look at this court, delaying, this trying as hard as they can -- and i have no problem with this case. this election interference case is the biggest case in the history of this country. i mean, 220 odd years of peaceful transfer of power until this. it's huge. if it starts right before the election, i'm fine with that. i'm fine with voting during a commercial break. but people have got to look at this and realize how rigged this is. and these six justices, you've got two of them appointed by george w. bush with the majority of americans voted against when you got to the white house. three of them appointed by donald trump with the majority of americans voted against twice. and the sixth, clarence thomas, by george h. w. bush who oppose this 64 civil rights act. americans don't choose the justices who choose our laws for us. and that's highlights that. >> dang. danny, can we talk about what the supreme court is looking at? they could make a decision that says, a u.s. citizen can operate above the law with no consequence. if they do side with donald trump, where does that leave us? >> it would be monumental. on the one hand, the mere fact that they are taking this case up speaks volumes because the very easily could've, and many people predicted they might just say, look, the district court issued an opinion, it was well reasoned. the d. c. circuit court of appeals issued a well reasoned opinion. there's not a whole lot of debate here. everybody seems to be an abuse agreement. they could've denied the request even hear the case in the first place. but you are absolutely right and that the real goal here, and it's strange because none of the lawyers will put on the papers and the judges don't really talk about it, but the unspoken mission here is delay and avoidance of delay. and i will say this, stuff, in 2023, i was saying some of these trials will not start until 2025. and, john, everybody laughed at me. and now here we are. here we are! all these former federal prosecutors who are much smarter than me, there were on here saying, no way. and they are right in a sense. in federal court, federal court moves very quickly. in a ordinary case, you could expect to go on trial very quickly. bush v. gore is a great example of the supreme court moving quickly when it wants to, john. you're exactly right. but with these cases, knowing that there would be such monumental legal issues, presidential immunity is, just one of many that this case would take a long time. all four criminal cases would take a long time. and i couldn't point to any specific thing is to say that things happen. or in latin, think this happiness -- it's a legal principle. things have happened and here we are. this happened, delay is happening. we should be that surprised. and i stand by what is it in 2023, some of these trends aren't going forward until 2025. save the tape, but don't save the tape. just remember i said tonight and that's it. >> dan, a lot of democrats are furious, they're no panicked about it. but do you really think is voters out there that are actually saying, i think he's guilty. i think he's corrupt, i think maybe he was involved in election interference. however, i need a court decision to help me to decide how i am going to vote. i am not familiar with any of those voters. how about you? >> i'm not either. and i think don trump has kind of embrace this. when you think of his tactics over the last, call it years since the cases have been bubbling up. he's happy to sit in a courtroom, he's happy to walk outside the courtroom until the narrative that he wants. >> all our cameras are there. we don't get to his rallies, we go to court. >> listen, aside from this fact, e. jean carroll -- that many, i think that really freaked him out. he's gotta put a bond up or whatever, however -- that victim out. that pitch to the core of who he is and we will see how that plays out over the time. but these are the ones, obviously the one in d. c., that's the one that sends him to jail. the other stuff is kind of like, it's going on in florida is a bit of a sideshow, what's going on in new york is a bit of a sideshow. and a lot of folks said, let's focus on the really important one to john's point, the one that really is actually 200 of years of history in the making and might be in the next hundred years how we operate in our democracy. again, i will side with you, sadly, 2025. >> hold on! don't they want us to believe that the hush money case is a sideshow? it sounds like it, right? you're paying off a porn star. but the reason stormy daniels was paid off to withhold information, not from donald trump's wife but from the american voter. >> someone's already going to prison for it. it's not a sideshow, donald trump is an unindicted coconspirator, and a lot of guys outrage now had no outrage when michael cohen did the time for the exact same crime. >> and i think the important part here is that we have to make sure he's being held accountable. for everything that he's done. i agree that the majority of voters are probably not weeding through all the legalese that is now going to be extended for another several weeks and months. there will be more motivated about the ivf decision in alabama than they will be likely but this. however, holding him accountable so that future presidents can do exactly what he's doing is incredibly important. and also at this point, it strikes me as ironic and problematic that the folks who were out there on january 6th, many of them had been indicted and sent to prison. yet, donald trump is still out. the ringleaders have not been tried and convicted but all of this so-called footsoldiers have been. i have no sympathy for them. but it really does go to show you the difference in how he acts in the privilege that he has versus all the folks that he sends out to do his dirty work. that has made especially true when he was in front of a crowd and talks about how african americans should completely understand the position that he isn't because he's being persecuted in a way that [inaudible] is being persecuted. if nothing else shows you how different that circumstances, it's today. because he, because of everything you said about who was appointed the supreme court justices, he knows exactly what he's doing, he knows exactly how to play the system. and he's doing it in front of our face. so whoever -- >> you'll never say that to the black voters. it's passed the black voters. >> the objectification of us. so if there's no other example of just how rigged this system is -- how rigged the system is, and how much he is rigging it, is what we are seeing unfold right now. >> do you think you will be held accountable in georgia? i do remember the last time we were talking about election interference on his part or the 20 odd other codefendants for weeks now. it is all about when fani willis and a fellow prosecutor potentially started dating. the final day of the hearing was today. we haven't talked about trump in weeks. >> a month ago if you asked me what the georgia case meant to trump, i'd say a real threat. i always thought the federal cases are real legal threat because 90% of federal cases and up in a guilty threat. but -- now, i'm not so sure. i think the law on the hole is on the side of georgia prosecutors. i think they end up avoiding being disqualified. but that doesn't mean that the case hasn't been fatally injured. there are many -- i'll give you several reasons. >> how does it affect the r. i. c. o. charges? >> how does it affect the recultured's? let me say this, it doesn't affect the substantive charges one iota. if you're talking about does it affect whether or not the defendants are guilty or not guilty, it doesn't. and never has. but practically speaking, this case, this motion, could be the end of the georgia prosecution. let me game it out for you. for example -- >> oh my -- >> fanduel isn't a fun way are disqualified. fani willis. she is the arctic type of this case. who's gonna take it up? then they're gonna have to find prosecutors interested in taking this long -- >> and a judge chooses. it >> is going to be the republican attorney general in georgia? i think not. now you have a political reason why this case dies a slow death. or, for example, maybe it just hangs in limbo while they find someone to take on the case. >> you're telling me the kraken lady the effect from nothing, is that what you're saying? >> exactly right. some of the defendants are wondering why did we flip so early. some defendants have pleaded guilty in the georgia case. let me tell, you the laws on the prosecutors side. the facts are on the defensive side. because the facts are salacious. but, here's the theory. and it either flies or doesn't. the theory is that the prosecutors were corrupt. because she, fani willis, had a relationship that predated the appointment of nathan wade. she pointed nathan wade because he was her boyfriend, and therefore, the money that went to nathan wade, which came back to her in the form of vacations, constitutes not necessarily an actual conflict, but the appearance of impropriety. and that was a major argument today. the legal standard to be applied. they don't even know because this is never come up in this context. so they don't know what legal standard will actually apply. it's all up to judge mcafee and ultimately, you're right. does it affect the substantive guilt or not guilty of the defendants? no. but, is it a real problem to this prosecution? yes. >> this is why i do worry about what the voters are thinking and how they are interpreting all of this, right? because it's incumbent upon us, in the party, to actually get them to follow this in a way that we are all doing to understand what donald trump is doing, that his goal really was to embarrass them, right? to take them in some way, shape, or form. they're waiting for an outcome. they're waiting for an outcome. but in the meantime, sheamus, ruby freeman. have stood in front of the dragon. and stood up for democracy. ruby freeman saying she can't even use her name anymore. you know? >> those are two patriots -- and john, the other thing is, what you're one of those two other prosecutors, you are simply feeling like, come on, we needed to be flawless. we are going up against a six headed monster in donald trump. that he is using every dirty trick in the book. and i'm not saying both sides need to be equal, but in order to take this beast down, you need to be flawless. and the fact that there was this issue, even if it's salacious, even if it's a sideshow, there is a very good chance they are feeling like, are you kidding me? this is -- i'm not saying it's a federal crime, but they could feel like this is an unforced error of the most consequential, one of the most consequential at least for these prosecutors that they were going to work on. >> of course, and i don't see how fani willis's relationship erases a tape of -- cheating and committing fraud in the election. of course, she is a woman. and that terrifies him. two things donald trump is afraid of, a strong woman and a strong wind. i don't actually see how this is necessarily in the gate in after the disastrous testimony of some of the witnesses earlier in the week. it's not only about taking him down, it's about serving the law and punishing those who are guilty. >> we are going to take a quick break. no one's going anywhere. when we return, joe biden and donald trump facing off at the southern border as immigration has become a hot topic of 2024. and later, are straight days from the right school the only route to the corner office? how we are redefining success in 2024. and nightcap on the 11th hour just getting started on this friday night. friday night. whoa, how did you defeat them? with a little kung fu strength and by connecting my devices to the most powerful force of all. skadoosh. hah, huh? cool right? amazing. harness the power of xfinity internet and stay connected to the things you love. ah, they'll be like this for hours. hello dad, hello dad, hello da. uh-oh. good bunnies. ahh! >> it was a showdown in texas this week with president biden and donald trump holding dual events along the border. dan, you are a new yorker, but for your from upstate new york. >> yes. >> let's talk about this issue because the way donald trump and president biden approach it are totally different. president biden was not talking about it much the first -- the last three years. now, he is focused. he's putting forth legislation. republicans are blocking him. donald trump is all gut and anger. but for voters, things like immigration are -- is an emotional issue. and trump, until now, has been doing very well with that messaging. how do you think voters take this? and is it too late for joe biden to change the narrative? >> it really is a question of politics versus policy. and joe biden joined the politics gain and -- a little too late. it's not something he's been pulling well at all, right? so trump has really had the strongman sort of role. it's kind of the whole thing he's done going back to 2015. really trying to scare americans about immigration. i think the democrats have focused on the policy. they had this bipartisan plan. yes, it's about security, but it's also about fixing the immigration system. i don't think any maga politician is trying to focus on fixing the immigration system that we need. if you look around the world, and you look at the demographic problems that china, that germany, that japan are facing, we are doing a little bit better but not that much better. so a fix for the immigration system makes a lot of sense. jumping into the politics game right now? that's pretty important here. if you just look at new york state, if you look at the special election that we just had here for that house seat, it was important. the messaging was important. so i think maybe the biden administration, the biden campaign, is moving to a place where they can actually kind of rebalance the scales a little bit with trump's scare tactics. >> listen, joe biden has issued more executive orders on immigration than donald trump has because there is an intention around fixing it. when i think republicans have done is, you can't use reproductive rights, you can take a victory lap on that. so let's bring in immigration. and it was used very heavily in york. i don't think it worked there, quantity ended up winning. but they'll end up coming back to it. as the child of immigrants, this angers me to know and. i remember, i don't remember, i wasn't born, but i was told countless times how my family was supported and how by catholic chaired these back. then to me, if there is intentionality to help and surround markets, we would do it. the nonprofits but come together in conjunction with government to actually make it happen. but now, i've got to see migrant families living in furniture stores in new york. that is heartbreaking, right? so, yes, i think ultimately something should be done. i do think in many ways democrats and republicans have failed immigrants in this country. but if i were to actually gain this out, i would say ultimately joe biden will be able to bring the narrative back for democrats. it's going to be difficult and will take some actual intention on the part of my party to do so. but right now, this is a frustrating, frustrating issue that, you, know is not going to go away anytime soon. >> here's the problem with the narrative, not enough people see the truth. we talk about it here. truth matters but only if you hear it. i want to share just a little bit of what we heard this week. watch this. migrant crime is starting to spiral out of control -- >> there is a migrant crime spree killing americans -- >> the migrant crime wave -- >> the migrant cry -- >> the immigrant crime crisis. >> every day, there is a story about some sort of migrant crime -- >> let's fact check. crime and migrant crime is not rising, it's down. it's down in the big cities that received the most migrants. crime is down. if that was not enough, while donald trump is at the border, remember, you had mike johnson saying -- joe biden was there for a photo op, when it was trump, who sat down for primetime interview. i want to share this little kicker that he threw. and >> i also think that the radicals, they will kill the babies in eight months, nine months under roe v. wade. they have the right to kill the baby after birth. literally after birth in some cases. >> he's been saying that line for years and never challenges them on it. we have to remember, of all the people running for president, donald trump is the only one who has hired undocumented immigrants to avoid paying a living wage to american workers into different centuries. polish illegal immigrants from trump tower. >> because i'm a smart businessman -- >> because he's a smart businessman. but let's go back to the fact that if you believe this bible, the only -- the new testament is the commitment to welcome the stranger. greg abbott heard that and thought, razor wire in the rio grande. at the end of the day, the biggest scandal of all of this, the greatest hypocrisy of all this is, i've never heard fox news call a wide law breaker and illegal in my life. but there is no wall they can build that is high enough to hide the gigantic help wanted sign at our southern border. if the republican purdue wanted border crossings to, and it could happen in a month. you start locking up those white employers who dangle those jobs, they'll stop crossing the border, supply and demand. they can do it if they wanted. they don't. greg abbott will weighed the meat processing plants that arrest all the illegals, not the guys counting money at the back. they know that if you actually ended on immigration, a solid would cost $400. dominant doesn't eat a lot of solid so maybe he does not think about it too -- much >> me to -- >> anyone talking about illegals but doesn't want to talk about people doing the hiring is lying to you. >> absolutely right. back in the 80s, even ronna reagan was talking about amnesty. and i'm not siding with reagan or the republicans on this issue, but my point is, same what i had before. if there's an interest in cooperating individuals into this country, and at that time, a lot of central and south americans, because there was this design to say, yes, we will provide some kind of amnesty, we will create sanctuary cities. we will get the christian evangelical community, we'll get the government to be supportive, and the goal is, hey, by the way, here's a republican party who's done this for you. come on over. and i'm not saying that it should be democratic or republican, but what i am saying is one of parties interested in actually bringing folks into -- democrats did it too way back with residents in the early 1900s. it's done and it's doable. but the point is that this juncture, when you conflate ethnic nationalism and economic nationalism, layer christian nationalism on top of that, there is this, after a certain shade, we don't want you. and that's where we are. >> reagan said open borders. he said go back then -- go back home when you're done here. >> danny, mastication, militarizing the border, the draconian things trump talks of, are they even legal? >> that's a really good question. we saw early on donald trump tried several executive orders by fiat which were overturned relatively quickly. so donald trump's view of what he can do in terms of immigration is often not consistent with the law. for example, we have asylum laws that can't just be ignored or overturned by executive order. those laws, those federal laws require us to accept under certain conditions people applying for asylum. there's certain things that donald trump simply cannot do by executive order or by a wave of his hand. and we've known that since at least 2016, 2017 when he tried at the very beginning of his first presidency, maybe only presidency. but he's tried it before and he's wrong. but at this point, does anyone think he's right about the law? we just saw a clip of him saying they're trying to abort babies after they're born. i mean, that isn't even metaphysically possible. >> it's insane. donald trump loves to say that the republican party is unified. but look at these primaries? pick a week, nikki haley is getting 20, 40% of primary voters in congress, republicans can't even get their faction of congress in order. do people see this? we're heading into super tuesday. what do you want to see? because what donald trump is telling people at the podium is not what bearing out in reality. >> and i guess the margin of victory, as we get through these states on super tuesday, we're gonna be able to pick some stuff out. that's what we've seen in these primaries that he's been winning substantially, but maybe not by as much as some folks. nick i think it gets to the other way. when we get towards late spring and, let's say none of these cases, happen this is just politics, we know who the two players are, that sort of thing. who's gonna be endorsing them? is mitch mcconnell going to endorse -- is nikki haley going to endorse? i think it's almost more important when you think about how that party is going to vote. and then going back to the very first top pick that we talked, about it's really going to fall into independents and they probably don't need a guilty verdict to know that he's a scoundrel. we all know he's a scoundrel. it's just the ones who got the judges, who got the roe v. wade, who got all this stuff overturned, they are in it for the long haul no matter what he does. and that's why i think the math gets kind of hard for him, especially if biden is going to take the fight now. like going to the border and doing some of these things that i think has not had to do just yet. >> if joe biden, though, couldn't have cracked 60% in south carolina, the media would've never shut up about it. donald trump couldn't do it. and it was a decisive win over nikki haley. >> her point, let's talk about no labels. they had their big meeting coming up this week. they have gotten ballot access for themselves. basil, the issue is, who would their candidate be? it's not going to be larry hogan, it's not going to be joe manchin. nikki haley said today it is not her. what's their game plan here? >> i have no idea. but did -- it scares the hell out of me. because, look. i deal with students every day, and i have a lot of students that say they're not voting in this election. that really, really troubles me. and when i start to hear that more and more, and i start thinking about what no labels is doing or trying to do, i'm very nervous about the future. >> but we'll get those young people to vote? >> there is a range of issues that they're concerned about but they just don't like any of the candidates. and the reality -- >> we student loan debt -- >> a lot of students are concerned about genocide and they -- >> that is something that i want to add. the air drops into gaza, those are things that i think could change the narrative a little bit about. and i have young people in my household, we all do i think, these are things that they have a different relationship with the history of that -- of our relationship with israel over the last 50 years or so. and they're thinking about it differently. i think a lot of them would opt for a protest vote or don't vote at all. >> and the thing is, as this country becomes more and more diverse, you're gonna have more and more people that particularly with social media, that check on what's happening at home. they check on what's going on in their homeland. we've done historically vote on foreign affairs. you're going to see a lot more voters wanting to gauge that more and be more concerned about what's happening, what the president is doing in whatever country they're coming from because they're much more connected to them. we only used to talk about that in terms of cuban americans in this country. but now, many more populations i think, that's gonna be a factor. >> i think that's why the arab american vote in michigan was so inspiring. khalid tapper nick, when he gave his protest, he could've given the finger. he could've done something negative. but he genuflect it indifference. and those folks could've stayed home, they could've voted for republicans, they could've voted for dean. instead, they voted for and committed to, say president biden, we want to support you, you've got to show us that you are willing to use a word like war crimes or word like cease- fire. >> that's what's really important about their message. they're saying, look, look at all these young people voting against joe biden. they actually use this moment to get his attention and say, our votes count, don't take us for granted. if you want to see november. >> i, mean it was brilliant. and it was a great use of democracy. it was really inspiring. i can guarantee you the white house heard. it's not a coincidence we're hearing about the airdrops of aid into gaza now. but it's got to be a lot more land that. i want to hear the word war crime. i want to hear the word sees crime. i know he's working at the scenes. but after what we saw this week, it's not making the people of israel safer. it's not making joe biden's job safer, what's going on. >> it's scaring young people. we have to acknowledge that. >> rfk, is he a candidate who is really going to pull from joe biden because when one thing that his delving into conspiracy theories, that takes you right to maga town. >> yeah, it does. but here's a thing, if you're megaton, you're never leaving the town limits. that's the only -- you like what i did there, john? i've got some -- i've got a couple of tops here. anyway, if you're in maga town, you're not leaving. but if you're a democrat, think about what basil just said, which by the way was terrifying, that his students are thinking about not voting. basil doesn't teach at eastham sandwich university. he teaches some of the smartest people in our country. >> they have good food and eastham sandwich. >> this is a really good point. we're not talking about bump pins here. you have highly educated students saying, i'd rather not vote. do they know what the consequences are? >> they do, but listen, in my, youth when i was there, age it was apartheid. right? and i wanted every institution, every college, every university, every elected official to come out against apartheid in south africa. so i know that energy. i absolutely understand that energy. and i can't say in the classroom, you have to vote for joe biden -- >> the white nationalist sent a christian nationalists, the all the guard's and fascists? >> what i, say and this is actually going to the point of no labels as well, elections have consequences. and we talk about what those consequences are. and if you don't like the specific individuals, let's just talk about agendas. i want to vote for someone who will increase and expand my right to vote, not shrink it. i want someone that cares about reproductive rights and black female health, maternal health. i want somebody who actually cares about that. i want somebody who actually cares about the pipeline of people that look like me being able to go to college. so i vote for that agenda, even if you don't like the individual. so i think they understand it from that point of view. and maybe we're getting closer to a problem in redirection and -- a direct vote for the president of the united states. but they are actively wrestling with this. and we have to go meet them where they are. >> the good thing is that they're engaged, we're gonna take a quick break. one comeback, unexpected week that started a bigger conversation about what we learned on what success means. when the 11th hour and the nightcap continues. nightcap continues. scout is protected by simparica tr 's in it to win it! simparica trio is the first chew with triple protection. whoa fleas! and ticks! (♪♪) intestinal worms! whoa! heartworm disease! no problem with simparica trio! this drug class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including seizures. use with caution in dogs with a history of these disorders. for winning protection— go with simparica trio. i launched our campaign at this union hall. use with caution in dogs with a history of these disorders. let's go win this thing! then we hit the road and never stopped. you shared with me your frustration at working harder to barely get by and afford a place to live. your fears for our democracy and freedoms and your dreams for yourself, your family, and the future. it is not too late to realize those dreams. i'm adam schiff, and i approve this message because together we can still get big things done. >> all right, this week, a surprising chain of events took place. last friday, on the show, i told you that i wrote an instagram post about what it's like to have dyslexia. and the only reason why a road it was because i knew my son was sitting in a classroom somewhere looking out the window wishing he wasn't in school. that post ended up with a lot more conversations, and i talked about it on the today show this week. and what ended up being extraordinary is this conversation made us realize that it connects to so many more people. and what i want to talk about here is education. because all of us grew up in school, for linear thinkers, where everything is, you must think a certain way, you must operate a certain way, you have to get straight days to get into the best colleges, to get into the best universities. are things changing now, that we're starting to say, you know what, maybe you can't get in the front door, but if you realize that you can get through the side door, you'll still get into the party. there's still a place for success. and i want to turn to you, basil. you have a degree education, you teach education and policy. do you think things have changed and now we're starting to see people, students as hold people? because i can say, for me, i just counted the days, the minutes, the hours until i graduated school because i desperately hated everything. and people who felt like gym class and lunch for their favorite subjects were doomed to a life of loser dame. >> i understand, and to your very specific issue about dyslexia, to be heartened that the schools -- the new york city schools transfer have specifically implemented a program to work with children who are dyslexic in the new york city public school system. so he heard -- he heard the call. look, some, where i graduated high school in 1989. at that point of -- a high school diploma was enough. we quickly moved into a knowledge based economy, a skills based economy, where there was this push and people were being pushed to go to university. and we saw vocational learning dropping off a cliff. so when -- very specific skills, dropped off. so what did we do? we produced a generation or to have students who are, yes, have a lot of degrees but have a tremendous amount of student debt. and in many cases weren't able to find jobs to be able to pay off that debt. so now we're going back to, let's think about vocational education. maybe college is not the way to go. can we train and create a code or who does not have to get a bachelor's or master's degree? we're thinking about all those things. in addition to things like social and emotional learning. i have students that are doing research on trauma informed education where the teachers are able to spot trauma in children a lot earlier than they had been before. that's especially important at the time of covid and post covid. so i do think the pillars are in place. i do think the strategies are in place. we may have a little wobble before we can actually implemented across the board and across race and class. but it's there, and there is the conversation. >> dan, do you ever think about wall street, when you got into the business, banks recruited from four universities, that's it. if you didn't go to one of those four schools, you don't have a chance to get in. things have changed a lot in large part because of dei. and now, more students from different backgrounds, different schools, are being welcomed and educated into different industries. do you see that as a huge positive in terms of change and who gets to be successful today? >> i do see that, but i have to correct. do they also recruited lacrosse players. >> i know -- education is not just learning in the classroom. and i think that's what was really beautiful about your post. you're talking about how difficult it is for people who have these sorts of issues. but those same people can go out there and get some work experience. and learn, and get education about different careers and what it takes to do that job. and i think all of, us mentor lots of young people. and when i say to them, your grades are important and getting to the right schools is important, but also demonstrating your interest in doing something and then going above and beyond, when you think about the tools you said in 1989, when you graduated, i graduated around the same time, to find out, you had to find somebody, physically, who did a job and get their attention and have them to want to speak to you about that. now, you can become an expert on anything. pull-up perplexity a. i. or chatgpt, or something like that. you have all of these tools outside of just cool right now. i think that's what's most powerful about it. >> you have to stay in the game. if you do -- if you hate school, if you gain no confidence or self-worth from it and you say, this isn't for me, then you'll never get to that path. do you think one of the reasons there's so much pushback right now against diversity and inclusion is because there are lots of people that come from those old school four pillars and the four universities who wants us to just stick with that? they don't want all of these other entrants and cerebral thinkers. >> i think one of the reasons why there is a push back against dei's because the republican media complex discovered a new bogeyman, and it's dei, even for people who can't spell dei. i don't think it's based on any adherence to the old way of doing things. when my child was born, and i'll never forget, we said to the doctor don't care if it's a boy or girl, will he be able to write code? and the rules are changing from one we were younger. if i can go a little off weight, richard louis died this week. as a comedian example, i loved him, so good to me. and he was someone who actually took his neuroses, took everything that made him a freak, everything that was wrong with him, and turned it into gold. on a creative level, he made audiences feel less alone, and that's part of his genius. he didn't play the cool guy. he did what you're not supposed to do in the field, especially in the 70s and 80s, and took every neurotic bit of him and mind that to create a brand and product. and we're in an age of doing it yourself and changing all the rules. whatever made you a freak as a child will make you unique as an adult, and we are witnessing that in realtime and some very inspiring ways. >> not everybody needs to go to college, that was the case for a long time. some of my friends from high school went to college, they should've been hanging drive wall -- >> they might've been killing it now had they done -- >> had they gone the vocational avenue or some different avenue like that, they would probably be killing it. some of them are. some of them got into construction, and they're killing it. they're blowing it up. but i say that and i have to admit, i'm a hypocrite. i may say that but when it comes to my own daughters, i want them to go to college. and when the time comes, i will hand basil and an follow-up with a lot of cash to bribe him into getting them into college -- >> you're lying, you would not do -- that >> i just wanna talk about. it >> but people go to jail for that -- >> the point is -- >> it does happen. >> to some degree, i am being a hypocrite. but i also believe now that the traditional notions about higher education, going away to a college where they read these dusty books, arguably, all that colleges right here in the phone. we have access to it. who here in the last year hasn't gotten on at night and learn how to do something on you to? and learned it may be better than you could from a book? learning is changing. and look, every model, every old model of learning is going to have to change with it. it's gonna be close -- slow to catch up. the way we think about learning is changing every day. so things are going to change there gonna be people who like that and they're gonna be people who are firmlye nn entrenched who don't like it as much. >> first day in office, josh shapiro, governor of pennsylvania change the rules so that every government job in the state of pennsylvania, you didn't need a college degree for, it is change the lives of thousands of people. all right, when we come back, it is time for the mvps. they might be good, they might be bad, who had a very, die consequential week? >> i'm actually gonna follow you a little bit. here the permission structure for that is deede was really formed by mitch mcconnell. >> wow! >> mitch mcconnell stepping down as the leader of the senate of the republican party, don't let the door hit you on the way out -- when you just think about, in my lifetime, in my adult lifetime, was there somebody who was more destructive i think to the way of life here in america, for all the reasons that you just made? because if it wasn't for mitch mcconnell, if it wasn't for his cynicism, if it wasn't for the focus on the courts, and on the majority, and the things that he would do in such a hypocritical manner to set the stage for donald trump, then, when he had the death shot, after january 6th, with the impeachment, he could've taken him out and it could've been done. and that std -- some of them stick around like luggage, isn't that -- what used to say? this one could've been gone. we would have to deal with him anymore. mitch mcconnell, good riddance. >> danny? >> the mvp is, of course, the human embryo. literally. in an alabama supreme court -- >> you mean the person? >> in so many words, it is a valuable person. literally. a person that exists outside the womb. and now that threw ivf facilities into a state of utter chaos. that case is fascinating because the facts are, apparently some patient goes into a hospital goes into a refrigerator where the embryos are stored, just take them out, how they -- nothing out about that. how did that refrigerator, how is that available to patients? it doesn't matter. drops the embryos on the floor and the parents bring a wrongful death lawsuit against the hospital. now, the net effect of the alabama supreme court deciding that these embryos were persons and you can sue for wrongful death is that ivf facilities started freaking out that, oh my goodness, now if people slip on a banana peel in the hallway and drop an embryo, we are gonna be liable. i mean really raises the question, what if we -- what if the power goes out? and the embryos -- we're gonna be mass murderers. what happens next? there is legislation that will probably pass. but it doesn't overturn the alabama supreme court's decision. it only provides narrow immunity for these ivf facilities. it's one bipartisan issue that both sides are together on. but that is really only a band- aid. it doesn't address the fundamental issue of embryo personhood outside the womb. >> basil, sadly these mvps were so good you have 15 seconds for yours. >> that's fine because i will lighten the mood a little bit. my mvp is a friend and former neighbor, robert bobby garland, who is the new artistic director of the dance theater of harlem. and their season starts in april. he's a good brother, a good friend who's labored long, long to try -- to get to this point in his life and his career. and the dance theater in harlem, if you've never seen it, do yourself a favor. go check it out. it's a jewel, and he deserves all his accolades. >> and so are you. thank you all for being here. what a beautiful night. and thank you at home for watching because this weekend marks this team's two year anniversary as being part of the 11th hour. it's an honor and privilege to anchor this show every night. so thanks for staying up with us, i will see you again on monday. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ "overflowing with ideas and energy." that's the san francisco chronicle endorsing democrat katie porter for senate over all other options. porter is "easily the most impressive candidate."
