As expected President Biden easily won the state on the democratic side. The only real opposition he faced came from voters protesting his handling of the israelhamas war with more than 100,000 people casting ballots for uncommitted. You see now the total about 13 . The votes are still being counted. Meanwhile, on the republican side donald trump racked up another large victory over nikki haley. But the former u. N. Ambassador still received a significant share of the vote. Its done somewhat in michigan, 26. 5 . Still more than 30 of republicans did not cast their ballot for trump, and the gop primary only 16 of the statess 55 delegates were up for grabs yesterday. The 39 others will be decided saturday at state part convention. A reminder the state Republican Party of michigan a kploot mess. Now, despite her loss, haley has vowed to stay in the race through Super Tuesday, thats next week when 16 states will cast their ballots. Among them is minnesota where haley made her pitch to voters there in a local Radio Interview yesterday. The democrats are salivating. Because they know they can defeat him. They defeated him in 2018. They defeated him in 2020. They defeated him in 2022, and they know theyre going to defeat him again in 2024. Joe biden is not going to be the candidate. Youre going to find the democrats still put someone younger in, and were going to be stuck with another loss and a president Kamala Harris. That is what will happen if donald trump is the nominee. How much of the hate and the divisiveness in the country right now do you think is because of the tone that was set when donald trump was the president and the tone that continues today. Completely. I mean it is continuing to be a toxic situation for republicans. And all thats doing is helping the democrats. You know, her team has said she has said shell be in through Super Tuesday now six days away bhch until then she continues to play an Important Role here. Shes delivering these attacks on trump to audiences that normally wouldnt hear them. But do we think next week is the end of the line . Republicans you speak to, haley advisers to they think after Super Tuesday assuming she doesnt stun us with a bunch of victories, will that be the end . Well, look, i think that the future of haleys campaign is becoming a little bit more cloudy right now. Im sure both of us know as she gets further away from the early primary states where Retail Politics can really change the game for her, its looking more difficult to see a path forward, any type of victory for haleys campaign right now. I mean its really difficult to see how she can move forward in this race past Super Tuesday. I mean a lot of the Super Tuesday states are a winners takes all approach to the delegate count, and coming close to donald trump is not enough. And we saw last night that she did not even come close to donald trump, so its really difficult to see a path forward of victory for nikki haley postSuper Tuesday next week. Yeah, and some of her top donors have started to abandon her. Shes still got money. She can stick around for a while, but even that will change at some point, but perhaps shell choose to stay in just in case something happens with trump and his legal maturs or something else. Lets switch to it democrats. Obviously we all know it would be an easy win for President Biden last night and it was. Its really about the uncommitted campaign, people putting a protest vote out there to object to how the president has handled the situation in gaza as weve been chronicling for a while now. They put up 13 , which is substantial but certainly not overwhelming. Its well north of the 10,000 they had asked for. It was about 100,000. Whats the reaction youre hearing from democrats as to that number . Well, last nights results for democrats were certainly a warning sign for President Biden and his campaign. And, look, i think if biden didnt see it before he realizes it now that hes running in a big ten party. Youngers voters, progressive voters, voters of color, Arab Americans are really concerned of his handling of this conflict, but i think its also very important for us to realize that today is very far away from november, and things can change with the conflict. But also a lot of these voters were simply sending a message to president joe biden. I mean we dont know what they will do in november. We dont know if they will vote for donald trump. We dont know if they will sit out completely in november. So its important not to read too deeply into the results of last night. But it also shows that there is a lot of concerns from a key constituency of joe bidens ahead of november. And he cannot afford to lose them. A lot of these voters will have a decisive role in novembers outcome. We should note the last time a democratic president ran for reelection, that was barack obama in 2012, in michigan the vote was 20 . Lets start with the place where there seem to bood be some consensus, the effort to avoid a Government Shutdown. Everyone said they wanted to do that, but walk us through what needs to happen to prevent it, and do you think it will . Its an interesting shift in strategy by Speaker Mike Johnson. Hes now basically saying without saying it that he wants to have another shortterm extension to try to find a larger agreement for continuing resolution and kind of shifting those dates past Super Tuesday, past President Bidens state of the union, so there wouldnt be a Government Shutdown here. But the big question remains, can they get a deal on these Spending Deals . None of the dynamics have changed, and if you remember House Republicans are going to be coming into washington today, and speaker johnson is going to have to present this new plan to them and get them onboard because they are still pushing extremely hard for a lot of Conservative Policy Writers that are kind of nonstarters with full house democrats, senate democrats, and the white house. While some agreement on the need to keep the government open seemed to be very conteng s over the issue of ukraine, we just played that sound from senator schumer saying its one of the most if tense meeting hes ever been a part of there in the oval yesterday. It seems like johnson was on an island with paris and biden and schumer and even mcconnell saying, hey, we need to get this done. Whats your sense as to what needs to happen next . Was johnson persuaded . Rg i think the most notable thing in that meeting to me was how vocal Senate Minority leader mcconnell was. Hes obviously been passionate, pushing for ukraine aid for a long time trying to get his republican colleagues onboard for that. But not only privately, very aggressive to speaker johnson it is time to move on this now but also publicly afterward. So far the speaker seems unmoved. Of course the politics very different in the house. The reality is if speaker johnson decided to put this up for a vote on the house floor, it would pass, but it would pass the majority of democrats. And that would endanger potentially his speakership and future in that role. We should note, of course, he keeps saying the house should focus on the border. They had a chance to do so with the Senate Bipartisan bill, and he opted not to proceed. Lets ended with this and you mentioned it speaker johnson his future in doubt if he moves forward. Give us context here as to whats shaping his decision. Is he going to prioritize staying in the post over the legislation . Hes under tremendous pressure right now. He doesnt have a lot of good options. When you look at the House Freedom caucus and where they are trying to pressure him as much as possible to stay strong, to try to ride out this issue. Some even suggested it wouldnt be the worst idea for them to have a Government Shutdown. Hes trying to balance that with the idea he knows politically as do all republicans they will likely get blamed for any kind of a shutdown here. And so he is really dealt a difficult hand here. And i think what is really going to be something to watch this week is how does he lead . There has been a lot of paralysis around Decision Making in the speakers kind of nascent time in this role, and theres a lot of Republican Loll makers who want a decision and want him to put a flag in the sand and say, all right, this is where were going, its time to move in that direction. Well see if he actually does that and how successfully he is in convincing his conservative colleagues a shutdown is a bad idea. That deadline looms in a few days. We will be staying on it. Ahh we turn back to politics now, and House Republicans leading the Impeachment Inquiry into President Biden have subpoenaed the Justice Department for documents related to special counsel robert hurs investigation. The hur probe looked into President Bidens handling of classified documents and ultimately declined to seek criminal charges. House oversight and Judiciary Committee chairs james comer and jim jordan have been looking into to try to tie bidens family to their Impeachment Inquiry. They wrote this in their subpoena. The committees are concerned that President Biden may have retained sensitive documents related to specific countries involving his familys foreign business dealings. This comes just one week after the embarrassing revelation that an Fab Informant whose allegations were a focus of the impeachment case had been indicted for lying about the President Biden and hunter biden and may have been a russian asset all along. Its also worth noting hunter biden will appear before lawmakers and congressional investigators on capitol hill this morning for a private closed door deposition. Well keep you posted on that. You know, jonathan, for years weve described Donald Trumps super power as his shamelessness, his shamelessness as a super power. The House Republicans also have a complete they are also shameless but a complete inability to be embarrassed because if you just take five minutes to think about what happened to their investigation last week, this is an embarrassment instead of a fall. It blew up in the most spectacular manner possible. They had invested massive amounts of credibility and resources in this source who has now been indicted and as you point out may have been a russian asset, so, you know, after years and years, by the way, talk about the russia hoax, the russia hoax pretending nothing happened, were now seeing in realtime Russian Disinformation in the 2024 campaign, and instead of basically changing the subject, moving on, what are they doing . Theyre doubling down because thats what donald trump absolutely insists they do. Thats what he wants, and thats what theyre going to get. Another example of how trump has complete control over the Republican Party or nearly complete control, senator rick scott was on capitol hill yesterday and he went onto say he would support donald trump even if he was convicted of a crime. This is just further evidence theres simply no red line for a modern republican to end their support of trump. Yes, i think youre exactly right. There is no red line. Look, i remember what happened in milwaukee when the president ial candidates debated and they were asked to raise their hands, would you support donald trump if he was a convicted felon. And pretty much efrd except Chris Christie raised their hand and said they would. And Mitch Mcconnell is in back channel talks to endorse donald trump. Now, think about think about the personal, the ideological history between those two men. Mitch mcconnell obviously is not a man of deep principle, but that i think will mark its one of those things thats completely unsurprising Mitch Mcconnell will endorse the nominee of this party, but we ought to be shocked by it when he consider what Mitch Mcconnell saw on january 6th, what he said about january 6th and all the things that have happened since then but it doesnt make a difference. For President Biden easy win, but the uncommitted had a id say significant but not overwhelming showing there of about 13 , but enough to get the white houses attention. As far as Prpens Go Trump wins easily, but Warning Signs are still there. 30 of the republican vote didnt go to him. I think there are much more serious Warning Signs for donald trump. Nikki haley continues to sharpen her message, continues to get a substantial portion of the electorate. I think theres going to be a temptation to overanalyze the michigan results. I mean, remember in 2008 40 of democrats voted uncommitted. When barack obama was voting for reelection in 2012, 11 voted uncommitted, and of course obama rolled to victory in michigan. So i think you look at that top line, joe biden has some you know, obviously some challenges in michigan picking up more than 80 of the vote. I think we have to figure out a way to align our media narratives, because when donald trump got 60 of the vote in south carolina, think about all the outlets that immediately declared he was the winner and that he was romping with 60 . And now with 81 people aresayi, Warning Signs for joe biden. I think most candidates will be happy to get 81 of the vote. Agreed. Give us your read on both races an the analysis of some sharp political operatives youve been speaking to. Yeah, jonathan. Certainly good nights for biden and trump, on track to win their nominations, but there are still Warning Signs for President Biden in michigan when you have a large arab American Population voted uncommitted or voicing their discontent of the president s handle of the war in gaza. Thats a warning sign going into 2024 whether with arab American Voters or Younger Voters genz voters. It shows how the Foreign Policy issue is seeping into the domestic election, how it could impact biden and bidens every move in this war is going to be played out on the Campaign Trail in some way with voters. For former President Trump were continuing to see those Warning Signs with some more moderate republican voters, a minority of republican primary voters who are upset with the prospect of him winning the nomination. Now is it enough for former President Trump not to get the nomination . No. Hes on track to win that. However, whats slated to be a really tight election, every vote for both of these candidates matter. Any slip up or any issue with voters, with a voting block or voting group, is going to matter in the totally going into november, assuming they are both the protective party nominees. It seems telling out of the polling that a significant percentage of those who vote for haley say look, we simply wont vote for trump. Some of them may come home between now and november, but a lot wont. If they dont, how worrisome is that for the former president . It is worrisome. That being said a lot of republican operatives i speak to say look, once, you know, the its a done deal for both of these nominations, assuming its trump and biden and they are officially the nominees, that period between the conventions in july and august and november, it will start to sink in for voters and that they are going to see this choice, whether they like it or not, its between trump and President Biden, and they will have to make a decision and looking at the other side of the political spectrum, wherever they may be, if theyre forced to choose between these two men theyre going to choose. They seem to think that ultimately these republicans will come home, but for me, its not necessarily the republican primary voters. Its the independent swing voters in areas like the suburbs and the suburbs of philadelphia, for example, the suburbs of detroit, some of these big cities in the u. S. Where weve seen suburban voters, suburban independent women, really decide a lot of the recent elections and swung towards democrats recently, but, you know, depending on what happens Going Forward with the economy and a number of other issues, they could swing back towards republicans. And lets return to nikki haley, who opened this segment with the litany of losing thats followed republicans since donald trump became the force of their party. Super tuesday, she said shes staying in. Thats six days away. Quick twoparter. Do you think theres any states on Super Tuesday she can win and if the answer is no, does she stay in beyond that . Its hard to see her winning any of these states outright. If she does do particularly well in some of these states, maybe not exactly winning, you know, that could mean she stays in. It has to do with the funding and how much shes bringing in from fundraising or donors.
