what he says is ahead for them. plus, the images that we've seen out of the west bank as crowds gather to welcome home palestinian prisoners who have just been freed, all while aid trucks continue to move into gaza. our nbc team is covering all angles of this story, and i want to begin with nbc's chief international correspondent, keir simmons, who's in qatar where a lot of work was done to get the truce extended. what more can you tell us about this new deal? >> reporter: well, chris, we're waiting right now for the last tranche, if you like, of the last deal, which is, we understand, likely to be 11 hostages released, 33 palestinian prisoners released from israeli jails. that is set to happen in the coming hours. and if it does, in just these coming hours, it's now 10:00 at night here. that would be a little bit earlier than saturday night, when there were some real challenges. didn't happen until midnight. but later than on other occasions, there have been some issues today over who is on those lists being disputed by hamas. we're waiting for that. and then the news in the past few hours that the truce will be extended by two days, and on each of those days, ten more hostages will be released and 30 palestinian prisoners, so it's an extension of the agreement, which for every hostage release, three palestinian prisoners are released and that's something that the qataris in doha, the u.s. administration have been pushing for, as well as the egyptians, and we got the impression through the day that the israelis and hamas were interested in this idea from the israeli side, trying to get as many hostages out as possible, is attractive, given that they were already in this state of pause, this temporary truce. >> keir simmons, thank you for that. i want to bring in professor hagai levine, the head of the medical team for the hostages and missing families forum, which was formed by families after the hamas kidnappings. thank you for being with us, professor. let me get reaction to the news over the last couple of hours that the cease fire has indeed been extended by a few days. >> of course the families that i'm escorting as a physician and a head of the medical team, they are very emotional. they are on an emotional roller coaster, and of course it's good news. we hope as many as possible hostages will be released soon, and yes, it's good that it's continuing. at the same time, we are extremely worried about those that are not released yet. >> let's talk about those who have been. it has been incredibly moving and emotional, even from afar. watching videos of freed hostages. we saw a photo of abigail, and her grandparents. . we also saw a mother with her girls, 8-year-old ella, and they were held with the rest of them for 15 days. yoni asher with his two little girls who say they dreamed at night of coming home. remarkable to watch. what can you tell us about these freed hostages, how they're doing, and what experience tells you they may face in the days and weeks and months to come? >> well, each one i was in a meeting with the red cross weeks ago together with the mother, as we just saw, and i was so happy for her to see again her daughters. also in the meeting were the children of elma and tali, and uhi. and brought the medications that are urgently needed for elma, and he told the red cross, my mother may be dying at the moment without the medication. unfortunately, this was fulfilled last night, and i was there with them to witness how the mother was brought in a situation that no human being should suffer. she was neglected for weeks. she came, without complete conscious. she is ventilated. she had lice and wounds all over her. probably happened when she was drugged somehow, like a sack of potatoes. that's something that no one should suffer. and if she would have been treated properly, as before the abduction, she was a happy grandmother, self-independent woman with some medical needs that were okay when treated. so that's something that is a great worry for all of us about what's going on with the other children. we hope for speedy recovery, the physical recovery may be quicker, the mental recovery will take a long, long time. >> we are getting more details about how -- what the situation was as theyerbeing held captive. karen munder who was released on friday, told a family member eyere fed bread and rice, but even that wasn't a regular occurrence. that relative told "the new york times" that they had lost 13 to 17 pounds in captivity. they had spent their time sleeping on chairs that were pushed together to form a bench. what more are you hearing about the conditions they were held in and what kinds of medical needs are presenting themselves. obviously at the very least, many of them have been under fed, dehydrated, and as you say, even in that condition, with lice and other problems that result from being held in those tunnels. >> so each one of them was in different conditions. they were kept in different places as groups, and we know that. now, i can tell you that some had injuries, like she was supposedly treated but didn't get the right treatment. now she was operated yesterday, and she now continues in recovery. we know that regarding the stress, you know, under stress, some were in better condition, some worse, but they do want to show the lights that they were heroic and solidarity between the people that were abducted. they split the feed between them. they helped each other to the extent they could. one of hostages requested that another person would be released before her, because she thinks she is in a poorer condition. imagine what kind of, you know, to be so noble. you're in captivity and to offer such a thing for someone else, and we see between the families, such solidarity, and all of the families of the released hostages are saying we will not rest until the last is released. i think that today, what we should focus globally is the fact that there are people still there that could be dying because of lack of proper medical care and all of us should call upon the world leaders, the iclc, you must get the red cross to enter now and to give them the proper treatment or just listen. because such an event as we saw, that's something that should never happen. we are with the families. i must say it's also very difficult for the families that every day they don't know if they will get good news or don't get any news, and we are -- our teams, the resilience team, the psychologists, with them all the time, and the conditions, again, it's -- you know, it's also for each one of them, it depends what is most important in life. some miss the sunlight, and some miss their family. some of them didn't know whether or not their loved ones were killed or survived. they had all kinds of thought, and how you deliver the news to them that maybe some of them, their house were burned, their family members were murdered. it's very very difficult, and many of them cannot really start the recovery process because still, like their family members are inside. so imagine how difficult this is. >> that story will stay with me of the person who thought that someone else should go first, not knowing what the consequences would be of making that decision. truly extraordinary how none of us knows how we would react in that situation, but that is an exceptional act of selflessness. professor hagai levine, thank you so much, and we appreciate the work that you and your organization is doing for the hostages (vo) make the switch. it's your business. it's your verizon. ♪ shelves. shelves smart enough to see, sense, react, restock. so caramel swirl is always there for the taking. as you are urgent humanitarian aids makes its way into gaza a fourth exchange is expected today. hamas says three women and 30 children are on the list of prisoners expected to be released by israel. yesterday, crowds celebrated their release of 39 prisoners, six women and 33 minors. but some have reported already and been rearrested. the commission for the affairs of prisoners and ex-prisoners and the palestinian prisoners club said this morning that since yesterday evening israeli forces have arrested a total of 60 people, and that includes former prisoners from the west bank. nbc's david noriega is in tel aviv. what is the latest, david, on the prisoner release? >> reporter: chris, we expect 33 prisoners to be released today in the west bank. i was in the occupied west bank reporting on this question. and here's what you need to understand. israel calls these prisoners terrorists. they say they were arrested and imprisoned because they are dangerous, and in fact several of them were convicted in israeli military courts of violent offenses, including attempted murder. many were not convicted and many were held under administrative detention, a practice in which israeli authorities can detain people, sometimes indefinitely, without charge or trial. from the perspective of the palestinians living in the occupied west bank, this is all happening in the context of what they call an illegal military occupation. we interviewed a prominent palestinian human rights activist in the west bank. this is what he had to say about the practice. >> what is administrative detention? >> thank you from home. put you in a prison. you don't know why, how, no evidence and they can bring you that indefinitely. >> without charges. without trial, without anything. >> i can't defend myself, for instance, if i have no evidence, if i have no accusations, specific. >> and this happens regularly to children, to minors? >> yeah, yeah. >> chris, it's because palestinians view these arrested and detentions in this light that we have seen such large crowds of people celebrating the release of these prisoners whom they perceive as heroes. we know that israeli authorities have told palestinians not to publicly celebrate the release of prisoners. as you can see from pictures, a lot of people are defying the orders, chris. >> david, we just got in some video from moments ago. we saw a group of people wearing the red cross logo, walk into the prison in the west bank. this is of course where palestinian prisoners are being released by israel under their truce agreement with hamas. we don't have any word on when there might be additional releases today, but obviously we're watching this scene there closely. what can you tell us about that prison, david? >> this is an israeli military prison, right? as i explained, the arrests and detentions happen in the military. several of the prisoners, including some we interviewed were being held in the prison. that's where we were serving the course of their administrative detention. others have been brought to the prison as a staging ground. we were there on friday the first night of the cease fire. red cross personnel entered the prison, gathered the prisoners. that's when we typically see big scenes of crowds celebrating their arrival. >> david noriega, thank you so much. let's bring in retired u.s. army colonel jack jacobs and an msnbc military analyst. colonel, i guess now there's potentially some breathing room with the truce extended by two days. then what? what does restarting this war look like? >> well, it's interesting, there are so many different pressures on netanyahu and the idf. there are some inside and outside israel who would like to see the cease fire continue, and that the primary objective is to get the prisoners back. there are others who would much prefer the war to continue, the offensive to continue, and the destruction of hamas, which was the original objective, for that to be the primary objective. for hamas, they would like to see the cease fire continue indefinitely. it's very difficult to envision how this all plays out. hamas has no motivation to release all the prisoners, and certainly not the last americans because that keeps pressure on the united states, who keeps pressure on israel, to continue the cease fire. it makes it extremely difficult to see what happens next. for those inside israel, and outside israel who see hamas destroyed, it's going to be hard to do that and figure out what the end game is. and so the likelihood is that for at least the time being, there will continue to be cease fires, but at some juncture, the pressure will be on the idf and netanyahu to continue the attack inside gaza and the united states and others will be pressuring israel not to do that, chris. >> let's talk about this concern by israel about hamas getting too much time, too much time to regroup, too much time to possibly set booby traps for its soldiers. does every passing day give them a larger tactical advantage? >> it does, and those of us who spent time in combat know this is true. if you're on the offense and engaging the enemy, you do not want the enemy to disengage because it gives the opportunity to do exactly what you're talking about, rearm, refuel, develop secondary and alternate positions, position people elsewhere to make life more difficult for the attackers who have a difficult task because you need at least a three to one ratio of attacker to defender in order to be successful, and even more in the environment of gaza with all the rubble there. increased communications among the sites and hamas, and generally to strengthen their defense. the longer the cease fire continues, the more difficult it will be for the idf to pick up where they left off and do what they say the objective is, and that is to destroy hamas. it will be far more costly, both to the idf and the people inside gaza if and when that happens. so disengaging and having a cease fire always serves the defender rather than the attacker. >> colonel jack jacobs, always good to see you, thank you. >> prime minister benjamin netanyahu making it clear the war is far from over. what will the u.s. do when the fighting resumes? >> reporter: yeah, chris, just in the last few minutes we received a new statement from president biden about the extension of the cease fire. he says that he has been and will continue to be deeply engaged in the negotiations and the conversations behind this deal that was brokered and sustained through, as he says, extensive u.s. mediation and diplomacy. he talks about the more than 50 hostages that have been released and returned to their families. he talks about how one is an american, abigail, who turned 4 years old on friday, while in captivity. he says he spoke with her family and that the u.s. is working very closely with israeli parnts partners to ensure all hostages get the care and support they need as they begin to recover from the trauma of their captivity. he talks about the benefits for all sides of this humanitarian pause, this extension. he says it will allow for more humanitarian aid to be allowed into gaza. that's something that white house spokesman john kirby talked about in today's briefing, the status of that extended humanitarian aid. he says that the u.s. is taking full advantage of the pause in fighting to be able to get more aid into gaza, and lastly, he thinkings the leaders of not only israel but also qatar and egypt, as he says the commitment to this process and reaching this agreement. he says, we will not stop until all of the hostages held by hamas terrorists are released, chris. >> allie raffa, thank you so much. we want to take a quick look at what is happening at the white house. this is the treaty room, and the person you're seeing standing next to the president, obviously pete buttigieg, the transportation secretary. we'll go to it when president biden begins speaking. israel is not the topic. it's about supply chains and lower costs for families, but there may be some comments on either israel, the fighting or perhaps even the conversations that he has had with israeli officials because prime minister netanyahu told "the times of israel," when he spoke to president biden, he made it clear there's no stopping plans for a continued ground offensive in gaza. the only question is how and when it will resume. this is the same message netanyahu conveyed to a group of israeli troops when he made an unannounced visit inside the gaza strip yesterday. the prime minister saying israel will continue until hamas is eliminated and the hostages are freed. joining me, ambassador alon pinkas, in new york, and israeli political commentator. i'm joined also by "washington post" foreign affairs columnist and msnbc contributor, david ignatius. good to have you both. mr. ambassador, if the truce's extension holds, perhaps, gets extended further, does it become harder for israel to reengage on the ground, and harder for the u.s. to support a renewed offensive. >> exponentially harder, chris. if you'll recall in our previous conversation on our show, we both alluded to the key date being the fifth day of the four-day cease fire. well, that's tomorrow, and it's already extended by two days, and there are increasing signs from israel, from qatar, from the egyptians, and, indeed, from the u.s. that there could be other deals which entail other cease fires. actually, the president in nantucket on friday said i could see dozens more being released in the next few days. that suggests more deals and more cease fires. now, the way it would affect israel is not necessarily in stopping any further operation, but in changing the parameters, or changing the dynamics or the scope and the scale, it will be much less of a wide scale offensive. you know, notwithstanding mr. netanyahu's usual bravado, and declarations. they're meant for domestic consumption, not that anyone trusts him too much. but you're absolutely right. if there is a series of successive cease fires, whether two days, four days, six days, three days, so on and so forth, it limits the scope of israel's latitude, and it makes it increasingly harder for the u.s. mr. netanyahu was quoted today as bragging to a bunch of political operatives that he defied the u.s. and that the u.s. objected to a ground operation. the one that took place in the last two, three weeks in the north of gaza. but that he's steadfast and continuing, as you mentioned in your opening remarks. so i see this either changing in terms of the dynamics of the war or leading to an open rift between the u.s. and china. >> david, you were in qatar, what, two and a half weeks ago? you have been following the negotiations obviously very closely. nbc learned that the administration has been actively working to get the latest extension. you have also talked about, and in fact, you wrote over the weekend a column with the headline, a fraught battle space awaits israel after the pause. what are you watching in the coming hours and days? >> so, chris, first, as your guests said, it's hard to restart a war after a pause. israeli officials were telling me over the weekend that they intended to return to what they called high intensity conflict in both north and south gaza. after this series of pauses and hostage release was over. that will be very difficult to do. i think in terms of what we can expect from releases, the israelis always believe that there were 50 hostages, women and children hostages, that hamas could easily locate and release. we have now seen them go out. they said there were another 20 that hamas could quickly get ahold of, and so what're seeing, i think, is that additional 20 in two days, ten a day, has now been set. there are 30 more women and children that probably could be obtained by hamas. but it would not be easy. some of them are held by other groups. so you could imagine, another three days of ten each, but then you get to the real difficult plight of male hostages and soldiers is. maybe israel thinks hamas would be under so much pressure would begin to release them. there's a lot of doubt about that. on the question of what kind of conflict will happen after the pauses are over, i agree with the ambassador and all of your guests, it's going to look different. it's going to be, i think, more targeted. more intelligence driven. less aerial bombardment certainly. i think israel know knows that after this pause and humanitarian assistance has gone in, it's going to be hard for people to accept going back to large-scale civilian casualties. i think that phase of the war may have ended already. >> ambassador, it is easy for folks, even who are not schooled in all of this, to understand why hamas would continue to hold israeli soldiers. but do you think that they would want to make at least some american hostages among the last released in hopes that the u.s. would then keep the pressure on israel to keep extending the pause? >> if they're smart, they would do exactly as you suggest, chris. but i don't know about the decision making process and the chain of commands in hamas these days. i don't know if it's still in tact. i don't know if it's been disrupted or interrupted. i don't know if decisions are made on a -- you know, with a broad perspective or with the very local perspective. look, this boils down to a very fundamental question, israel and hamas have a completely, you know, a definition of what constitutes a win. obliterating hamas, eliminating hamas. toppling hamas, and however many other synonyms you can find. for hamas, a win would be just to stand on their feet. standing on their feet could also manifest through their negotiations, through an ongoing process of negotiations. direct, via egypt, via qatar. through the u.s. i think they will keep them for as long as possible in order to generate the exact pressure that you were talking about from the u.s. and israel. >> so, david, when the ambassador talks about who's running the show for hamas, who's making the decisions for hamas, i'm wondering what your sources are telling you about the level of intelligence. we know a top commander, for example, in northern gaza died in an israeli air strike. hamas has confirmed that. what do we know about the command structure of hamas right now. and what do we even know about where several dozen hostages or by whom they might be held. >> so first on the command structure, i'm told that some senior hamas political leadership in gaza, as opposed to the political leaders in qatar were killed. you can't get underground and do dna tests. there is sufficient command and control that hamas is able to respond to qatari mediators, and answer specific questions. we know that much. israel will demand details of the identities of people who were to be released, and those details are supplied. there is ar of hostages that are disbursed that were taken by other groups when the gazans burst through the fence on october 7. not all of them were hamas people, and there's talk that hostages were sold, just some dreadful things happened in that violent, chaotic day. where are they now? can hamas get them? would deals have to be made with some of these smaller groups? i think the israelis are struggling to find information, but i'd be surprised if they have all of it. the leverage that israel has is to say, if you don't keep releasing hostages we're going back to war. the americans may not like it. the world may not like it. we're going to do it anyway, and that's a strong incentive for hamas, which has been underground and facing enormous pressure to continue releasing what hostages it can locate. >> david ignatius, former ambassador alon pinkas, a power panel if there ever was one. thank you for your insights. appreciate it. new details about the suspect arrested for the shooting of three college students of palestinian descent. his chilling word to an agent that showed up at his door to arrest him. but i like this. get a light scent that lasts with no heavy perfumes or dyes. suspected of shooting three college student of palestinian descent who were in burlington, vermont, for thanksgiving break has plead not guilty to attempted murder. but the investigation continues including into whether this was a hate crime. nbc news has learned that when an atf agent showed up at the suspect's door to arrest him, he replied, i have been waiting for you. and this is what one of the victim's uncles told reporters just last hour. >> it seems like it's a hate crime to me. it seems like that way to all the family and everyone else that's involved. but, again, we're letting due process take its course. the family strongly believes this was motivated by hate. >> nbc shaquille brewster is live at brown university, where one of the victims went to school. shaq, i wonder what you're hearing from brown university students. they go back to class today right after thanksgiving break. >> reporter: here at the university, the topic of the israeli, hamas war has been in focus. there have been demonstrations, a lot of activity in response to that. news that one of the classmates was impacted in the shooting over the course of the weekend is really just trickling out. people are learning and understanding exactly what happened. the university's president released a statement last night saying that they sent personnel up to burlington, that they're in contact with tahseen's family. and they will be hosting a video later today. those who saw the news online or through social media, you're hearing words like frustration, anger and fear. i want you to listen to what some students have been telling me today. >> i was shocked but also not surprised because there have been other acts of violence that are isolated from this event. i guess it really hit close to home. >> especially after this shooting that just happened, i definitely feel like i would need to, you know, be cautious about how i wear any kafida. >> reporter: she told me her fear is this could happen to anyone. one of the community groups. one of the student groups on campus, they're launching a new program, a safe walking program for palestinian students who are fearing walking home or walking back to their dorms after class or after an on-campus event, where they call a number, and they will have a buddy, essentially, to escort them back to their house. that shows you the sense of fear on campus, even as authorities in burlington, vermont, and federal authorities still work to confirm whether or not this was a true hate crime. many of them saying, many students here saying, this is clearly an act of hate, whether or not it gets that designation, chris. >> shaquille brewster, thank you. as police search for a motive in the vermont shootings, concerns about religious discrimination have been escalating throughout the war. as the "wall street journal" puts it, creating fissures in a divided american electorate that could shape the presidential election. there's a poll from the journal that finds among democrats and democratic-leaning voters, 56% see prejudice as a major problem for muslims, compared to 46% who see it as a major problem for jewish people. among republicans, it's the opposite, with more seeing discrimination as a bigger problem for jewish people. 31% to 22%. joining me is brendan buck, former aide to house speaker john boehner and paul ryan, msnbc political analyst. good to see you, brendan. to what extent do you think passionate views about the war could face the 2024 election? is it more about a general feeling in the electorate that the world fears, like a scary place? is it about this israel, what people see as an israel, palestinian divide? what do you see? >> well, certainly heightened tensions can have an enormous impact in the election. fear is a powerful motivator. the challenge for president biden and his reelection is this is an issue that firmly divides his party. obviously muslim and arab-american voters were very important for him in a state like michigan. but obviously jewish voters as well are a large part of his voting bloc, and when both of those groups feel unsafe at home, that's not good. but you also as a whole, and they are more concerned about prejudice against muslims than jews. how unsettled do you think that younger vote is, and what are the implications for president biden? >> the challenge is this is a voting bloc that obviously is very important to any democratic candidate but one that has been slipping away from joe biden for a long time. younger democratic voters are much more anti-israeli government, much more anti-hostile, i should say, to prime minister netanyahu, and it's really, i think, in contrast to how the president has been so close to netanyahu. i don't think that there's an enormous risk that young progressive voters or even muslim or arab voters are going to flock to republicans. i don't think that donald trump, a person who called for a muslim ban, is going to win over this group. however, apathy is a huge problem. young people have been very apathetic in polls to joe biden. they don't feel energized, don't feel like he's delivering on promises. people staying at home, not being motivated to vote can have an impact. if your base does not feel excited, if your base feels like you're undermining positions they have, and have been passion about
