trump did not blame him for the losses. no republican on that debate stage on wednesday dared to really take on the albatross named donald trump, not in front of an audience of republican voters. so that is hopeless. good people who like things like respecting election results and rule of law and not attempting coups, now had to assume that republicans cannot or more likely will not step out the threat of trumpism in their party [interpreter] . a red wave never materialized for republicans, which is good news for democracy in the 2022 midterms and republicans really did get trounced this week, which is even more good news for democracy. the leader of the republican party has recently been posting memes of the u.s. capital on fire with the words, i am coming back to clean up the mess. that actually, happened as the fbi was in the midst of a manhunt today for a capitol rioter, former new jersey national guard police sergeant, who is accused of pepper spraying officers at the capitol on january six. nbc reports that gregory yasmin was identified in early 2022 but online sleuths who go by the name, sedition hunters, a group that has aided in the arrest of hundreds of capitol rioters. the online sleuths said that yetman was seen unloading a canister of chemical weapons from behind a police line, as officers came under attack on january six, 2021. that image of yetman was featured in a wanted poster released by the fbi on thursday before he finally surrendered. now, trump hyping memes of a burning capital building, while one of his followers were literally put in handcuffs today for allegedly attacking him, that halting was met with crickets from republicans. they can't, or more likely, they won't, stand up to him. as for the proverbial dumpster fire happening in the republican-controlled house of representatives, which has seven days to go before another government shutdown, the associated press reports, quote, house lawmakers left washington from the weekend without a plan in hand, after several setbacks. speaker mike johnson is still sounding support among republicans about what to do and is expected to unveil funding at the station over the weekend, according to republicans granted eminent and immunity to discuss internal deliberations. whether the government has done in a week is now in the hands of speaker mike johnson, we may remember, that a group of republicans in the filing a brief in a lawsuit that was aimed at overturning joe biden 's 2020 presidential victory. on tuesday, voters in kentucky, virginia, ohio and pennsylvania went to the polls. they overwhelmingly rejected republicans and their policies. so while republicans are unwilling to take on trumpism, democrats are proving that the best way to take on trumpism is to vote. in virginia, voters dashed any hope that republican governor glenn youngkin had four full control over that states legislator and probably his presidential aspirations to. the new york times reports that clyburn or you can, quote, poured millions of dollars and his political capital and to expanding power for his party in the legislator, but voters in virginia galvanized by glen oak and proposed abortion ban helped democrats maintain control of the state senate and flip the state house. in ohio, more than 56% of ohio voters approved a ballot referendum and shining reproductive rights into the states constitution. the emit one in 18 suburban and rural counties that voted for donald trump in 2020. in pennsylvania, where i spent a lifetime, which became ground zero for don trump anti-democratic movement in 2020, the democrat, dan mccaffrey, one and open see on pennsylvania supreme court. now, democrat three ran against caroline carluccio, a conservative judge who was backed by anti-abortion groups. with democrats win, democrats now hold a 52 majority on pennsylvania supreme court, providing a protected buffer for next year's presidential election. this week's election proved once again that the best way to fight trumpism is to show up and vote and when. joining us now is pennsylvania speaker, joanna mick then. speaker joanna mcclinton, thank you for joining us. i have met so many people who talked about the fact that they were going to go out to vote, not in the traditional way that people talk about the fact that it's election day, and i am going to vote, but because they felt that they were participating in democracy in a way that they have not felt say ten years ago or 15 years ago. people went out and voted, particularly in judicial elections, not that people talk about it all that much, because they felt that they were doing for the right for democracy. >> that's right, ali. it's good to be back tonight. here in the commonwealth of pennsylvania, voters made it clear that they do not want the cynicism -- cynicism and our rights to be mailed back in anyway, because they went with intentionality and purpose to ensure that justice elect dan mccaffrey won that race, and it was very clear that his opponent was not talking about the 2020 election, and the alleged fraud that occurred with voters. his opponent was not clear on where she stood on women's rights to reproductive health. however, it was very clear that our state supreme court makes all at the very important decisions to double down on our rights and freedoms in pierre. >> look, a lot goes into michigan and georgia and arizona because of all of the shenanigans that are going on. and pennsylvania, it was right in the midst of it. the midterm election showed that a lot of republicans and pennsylvania came out and supported democratic candidates, because they simply cannot be associated with this anti-democracy message that republicans are involved in in places like pennsylvania. how do you think that this bodes for next year and what democrats need to be talking about in terms of preserving democracy? >> it shows us one thing, and first and foremost, voters are paying attention. we were not able to cruise control for a lot of hot here elections, where there were municipal decisions being made. district attorney mayor, and our courts here npi, but since the united states supreme court ruled back the rights of women almost 50 years of protections, pennsylvanians voted to stand up. the only reason i became the face woman speaker in pennsylvania how speaker, why i had to gavel, while democrats have a one seat majority in our chamber, because they recognize that just last year, republicans, when they control the house, they were trying to push a constitutional amendment, get this, to ban abortion and require restrictive voter i. d. here in our state. >> let me ask you about that, because they at the state, the support for abortion rights outweighs opponents of abortion rights, but more people are supporting abortion rights and votes like the one that you talked about in pennsylvania in votes like what we saw on tuesday, in these referendum, no matter who puts them in the courts forward. this seems to be into the fence of rights and democracy, as opposed to just a fight about abortion. >> that's right, because the question is what wright is next? in 2020, we saw pennsylvania is a part of ground zero for our former president, and his claim that there was election fraud. he says something like bad things were going to happen in philadelphia, when in fact, philadelphians came out in record numbers to defeat him electorally. so we recognize not only are our rights to healti would say e he bu theorists, people prom the biggest lie on the hi score of our land. ur former president would also do every court, trying to be able to undo the outcome of pennsylvania voters. >> was the impeachment manager in the second impeachment trial of president donald trump. he was a plaintiff in the civil suit of donald trump for his role in inciting the attack on the capitol on january six. thank you for joining us. i want to pick up on that conversation, because this does seem to be a thing. question, it's pl locks for liberty peop, across this country, it against my rights? >> it's a freedom agenda that democrats are running on, and we have never done this before. if you go back and look at the presidents reelection launchpad, which really focused on freedom, so it's financial freedom, affordability and breathing room, into personal finances, it's personal freedom. and freedom over your body and for your kids, it's freedom for what they read in schools, and also, the freedom for them to come home from school to be safe and free from gun violence, have that vote counted. the freedom to breathe, clean air, so these freedoms are at the core of what this is about. you see the difference between republicans and democrats are now on those freedoms, is that democrats want to govern and expand freedom, and republicans want to rule and limit and contract. >> let me ask you about the conversation that was having with the speaker joanna mcclinton with democrat fee, who won the judicial race. it was believed that $20 million was poured into that race, erekat for a traditional race. traditional campaign, much of it from jeffrey asked, who is not to be the richest man in pennsylvania, who was supporting the republican candidate. how does this happen. at this point, where it becomes either about freedom or rights or democracy, what happens with these big dollars that are continuing to go at republicans. at some point, are these republican donors before the 2024 election, going to have to confront the fact that there are supporting people who are just not preserving democratic rights there? >> they're lighting their money on fire, because it is not working. but to your point, they are continuing to invest in the undermining of our democracy and attempting to take a wrecking ball to the rule of law, but the hero of this week, the hero in this story, and the hero next year's at the voter, the everyday voter who recognize that their rights are at stake, and that the greater good democracy just has to live long enough through the election next year, and we can give it a shot. i am more inspired and optimistic that good guys are going to win, and we are going to see that, we will renew and redeem democracy and write a new and better chapter next year. >> i will be having a conversation in a few moments with a mother who had had it with the book banners, and the overtaking of the school board. on some levels, i sort of joked at that groups like that, these so-called groundswell groups that are involved in culture wars, have done isn't a favor. it has brought us into democracy in a way that allows us to be the footsoldiers of democracy, allowed regular, everyday people to say, i can do something to put a stop to this. >> it allows regular people to recognize that they are not helpless, that they have agency. not just in registering or voting, but also showing up in the town square, at a town hall. that is your power. you showed that you carried, showed up, and this past week, showed up made a difference. >> we don't want to forget that you are an important member of congress. i need you all to pass and thing that allows us not to shut down the government in the next seven days, what is the likelihood of that happening? >> these guys seem responsible, right? i am very worried that these are the failures that they have failed to come together among themselves to even a pass appropriation bills among themselves that will bring affordability to my constituents, and that will keep a safer in the world, so this is just a lesson, and democrats stand ready to govern, will deliver the votes to keep the government open, and we will over the next year, show that the american people deserve confidence, rather than chaos. >> focus, meant to see, as always, thank you for joining us. change your life forever. abortion stance was not the only big loser from republicans on election night. republican candidates who are pushing culture wars issues over gender, sexuality and race last in local races across the country, from pennsylvania to virginia, to iowa, republicans bet big on the culture wars, targeting school board elections in swing districts. their extremist agenda in race after race was sold under the guise of parental rights, with the help of well funded, far-right groups like moms for liberty. we've seen this play book before. it's created panic that schools are trying to groom children, instead of teaching diversity and inclusivity, they tried to limit the diversity program, banning pride flags, banning books, banning transgender citizen playing sports, even changing school curricula to forbid discussion of certain issues, and they called that parental rights. where i come from, we call that bs. apparently, so do a lot of my fellow voters. lauren place that the extremism lost big on tuesday night's deep enrich school district in bucks county, pennsylvania, north of philadelphia. it was part of the group called a rich network. our next guest, jane cramer, helped elect democratic parents in the school board who would prevent -- protect students rights and promote education for all students. jane cramer started a tiktok campaign to explain how the republican school board policies were targeted lgbtq+ riddance and students of color, and she documented it, while protesting at a liberty event. and on tuesday night, democrats swept all five open seats on the school board, taking control of the school board away from republicans. this is what democracy looks like. joining me now is jane cramer, a parent from bucks county, pennsylvania, who helped lead the fight to remove moms for liberty from her school board. jane, thank you, thank you behalf of democracy, on behalf of the children and on behalf of the parents, because parental rights is pacific air right to decide what your child consumes at school and not handing that right to the state. >> absolutely, ali thank you for having me on. the parental rights top is so disingenuous because, parents in pen rich came out in numbers to plead with the board to do the right thing, it can to cut the culture wars and, especially, to our curriculum. and they did not care. they ignored us, they ignored our emails. they ignored our public comments and mocked us, scared us with our cell phones, they didn't. kara >> let's talk about for a moment, this group, moms for liberty. there has been an effort to make book banning and things that have happened at school seem like this organic thing. parents who are concerned coming forward. it is not that, and i know that. you have experienced directly that is an organized movement, and the only way to overcome it is with a level of organization. >> absolutely, absolutely, the majority of the people that came out to school board meetings and expressed concern about books were not people that had children and it issue. either their kids, they home schooled, their children or in private school, or they did not have children and the district. their kids were grown, or they don't have kids. it made no sense that there was all of this moral outrage about sexualized content in books, when their children, they did not even have kids in the school. why were they so obsessed with it. we know now why, because moms for liberty delivered that playbook directly to the pen rich gop. >> one of the things that i think what's so interesting about this election and things like what you did is you motivated people to come out, in some cases, for elections that most people don't pay any attention to, school boards in pennsylvania, we had a supreme court judicial election, these are things that most people don't pay attention to, and yet, they have come out. tell me about the sense of empowerment that you encountered, when you and your fellow organizers and voters understood that they could actually make a difference to this deterioration of democracy that we are all waiting for? >> it's overwhelming. when we learned that we won the election, and that we won all five seats, we're still smiling. >> you should be. >> it's pretty amazing that as a group, we pulled it out. we had an amazing group of people. there were probably 50 people, i would guess, that worked for the past six months, ten, 20 hours a week, between research, social media, working on the campaign. we had a great team running the campaign for school board candidates. the candidates themselves. we had teachers come out and write a pets. we had parents right abets. it was really a full court press for the past six months, because we all saw that this pen rich gop and the school board were basically trying to use our kids as guinea pigs in the social experiment of trying to create hills they'll 1776 curriculum and to a public school. as far as i know, where the first public school in the country, where this was attempted, and it was attended and sarasota, florida, but they shut things down a lot quicker than we did. it took us longer. >> but you are regular people, jane. this is the thing. this is the thing happening and also to push across the country, and there are lots of people like you, parents, who think that they can't do this. this is not your profession. i think it's important for the country to know, jane, who is jane kramer? who are you, and what can you tell other people in this country about the role that they can play in preserving democracy? >> i think parents, everyone in this country, absolutely can make a difference. i am a social worker, so i do have a little bit of, you know, orientation towards advocacy and speaking out against things that are wrong for the community. you know, it's scary to go into a school board meeting and stand in front of the board, be on camera and have hundreds of people sitting in the audience. that is overwhelming, but parent after parent, teacher after a teacher, student after student came out because they saw, how wrong it was. we had to stop it, and, we did. >> well, says jane cramer on the screen, but what people are looking at is courage. thank you for you did, we appreciate it. >> thank you. jane cramer. joining us now is erin reed, a journalist that tracks lgbtq+ legislation and d that estates. aaron, good to have you here. thank you for being with us. tell me about this. what did you see on tuesday, when you saw some of the successes motivated, not all the same as what jane cramer was doing, but by citizens who said, i think i have had enough with this nonsense? >> yeah, tuesday was such a fascinating example of the importance of local politics, and we have seen over the last three years, the targeting of -- lgbtq people, trans people, not only in schools but workplaces, everyday life. and in 2023, this election just on tuesday was the biggest field test of the. it was going to be -- the test this whether or not this issue would be a political winner for the republican party, and we saw, not just in bucks county, where obviously, big things happen and bucks county, the central new york school district and lakemoor school district and iowa. it happened in school board races across the united states. it did not only even happen in school boards. it happened in other races. we saw even in the governor chair selection. they spent $2 million in advertisements targeting lgbtq people in schools, trans people and queer people. it was a fascinating event that happened on thursday. >> what i am fascinated by is who told conservatives that this is a good idea? because it consistently ranks as nonexistent to most american voters. this is not a thing to most people. there are real things in society that they need to deal with, and this fear of what is happening to your kids, people turning your kids gay and trans is not really a thing to most people. it does not rank, and it's doing the opposite. it appears to be moderate people who otherwise would not fill in some of the races to actually come out and vote and organize. >> absolutely, i can't remember the last time that there was such energy among progressive voters in local races. this is something that i think people have struggled to get progressive voters out to the polls for. but you are right, we have seen certain strategist on the right. we have seen various social media influencers claimed that this is going to be the issue of our time, the big issue. in fact, right now, in national legislation, we see in the budget fight, which you are just talking about, there are 14 provisions in these bills, where they target trans people in schools or trans people with medical care, where they defund children hospitals. this is a major issue or now, and now we'll see if they take lessons from what happened on tuesday into 2024. >> i guess the danger is, most voters are not concerned with these things, but the fact that they are happening means that most voters do have to become good with the legislation and do have to act on it. >> absolutely, because at the end of the day, whether you're concerned about it or not, if they shut down the government, then it has effect on us all. likewise, in your local school districts, if they spent the majority of the time focused on a trans person, one single trans person using the bathroom instead of improving for killam articulate tension, is thi th te fact that news, board of directors the actors union has overwhelmingly approved the deal that was reached with the status of their 118 days on strike. one at the most contentious issues in the always be chasing something but never quite get it. >> here is what sag-aftra's national executive director and chief negotiator, duncan battery said about a. i. protections in the deal. >> our background actors are protected in our a. i. provisions. we have a provision that requires the companies to get the consent of performers whose facial features are used as part of the creation of such a synthetic, even if it is more than one a performer, even if it is only a part of those recognizable facial features. number two, the companies are obligated to give us a notice anytime to use a generative a. i. to create a performer. we'll know about it. and number three, the union has the right to market competition on behalf of those people, in the event that the company creates any kind of synthetic performer. >> now, the contract, if approved, is good for two and a half years, and neither i or most americans could have imagined any of those provisions you just heard enumerated effuse ago. i don't know if we can imagine what the creative industry will look like for the next contract in 2026, so i am bringing in someone who's got a unique and relevant vantage point on this. joining us now is filmmaker and author justine bateman. she's got a degree in computer science and digital media management. she previously testified on capitol hill on the issue of neutrality. she is with us. >> hi, thank you. >> i think when this first came up, i remember talking to studio folks who said, nonstarter, the actors are not going to get what they want, rioters killed had similar concerns, not going to get what they want, a. i. is the future, it's hard to stay, and it is going to result in fewer workers. the union stuff to it. i think many people did not know than what it is about, and are still not sure what it is about. >> well, briefly, jenna truth a. i. is something like a blunder. it can function. if it did nothing on its own. needs to be fed a bunch of data. you write a book, you feed it millions of books. if you wanted to spit out a synthetic performer, which is just an a. i. that resembles a human, you feed hundreds of years of performances. that is one of the things that, apparently, based on what duncan said, because we have not seen the full agreement yet, that that is -- the union has given them permission to replace actors with synthetic performers, which is an amalgamation of 100 years of performances, and that means fewer to no sets, fewer to no crew, fewer to know drivers, the list goes on, and that is very bad for business if, you can imagine. >> so, what does, in your opinion, because i have studied this, i think more than the average person in the industry has, what in your opinion with success look like for the steal? >> i think it should have been, we're not talking about synthetic characters, we are a union that represents human beings, so if you want to negotiate about made up genotype a i objects, that is insultingly an amalgamation of all these past performances, you better take all of that out of the contract. we might as well be negotiated for non union actors, because the synthetic performers, these a. i. objects, are not going to pay dues, not going to pay pension and health, and they are going to take a job from a human actor. i would have put in there, one of the provisions that they got is a definition of what it character is and what a writer is. and funny enough, they had to say is a human, so they should have said, performer, screen actors guild, nonstarter, we are not doing anything until you agreed to this, it's a human. unless you are doing some fantastical character, good doing king kong or something, go duke it out with cpr guys, but if you are doing a human character, it has to be played by a human. that would have been one of the first things that would've set them. >> where are we now, there has been a deal, and it will go to the union membership now for ratification, i believe starting on tuesday, which means we'll probably see the deal over the weekend starting on monday? do you believe that this deal should be approved by the membership? >> if they don't want to work anymore, sure. if they want to be replaced by synthetic objects that are made from generative a. i., why not? >> i want to redo something, the hollywood reporter was quoting from crabtree -- it will cut the number of animated movies. this is interesting, because we're talking about non-human actors. and the good old days, it a 500 artist five years to make a world class animated movie. i don't think it will take 10% of that, three years out for now. so jeffrey katzenberg, and the cities are saying, the quiet part out loud. they are saying, a. i. cuts at the need for human labor, and they made the argument that that is the way, that will be the way at the future, like the industrial revolution? >> we'll, if you don't want to be in the phone business, that is the way that it goes for you. and the ceos are choosing to no longer be in the film and serious business. they are going to be, i think they sort of like to think of themselves as being tech barons, themselves or something. but doing projects that don't involve humans, it's not -- you're not in the film business anymore. my self as a filmmaker, i am never using generative a. i.. i like what people do as members of a crew, members of the rioters, the editors, the cinematographers, the actors,, look, people don't want to have any humans evolved, have never really been on a set. they don't
