Tonight, republicans talk about Upholding A Second Vote on new speaker. As late as in the 4 00, 4 30 p. M. Hour. Now i can tell you the republican Officials Say the plan is off, but there are reports that republican fire brand jim jordan will get another shot at another floor vote. Here he was walking out after he lost the first vote today. He failed to get enough votes. So we have more on this later in the broadcast where were going to break down what happened in the very important race for speaker and someone whos tied to all sorts of january 6th efforts potentially becoming your new speaker of the house and what we think could come down the pike tomorrow. Thats a fluid governing situation. We begin, though, with the war in the middle east. President biden you see here, this is just moments ago, getting ready to head off to israel tonight, where he will meet with Benjamin Netanyahu tomorrow local time. Bidens visit comes amidst one of the deadliest strikes in this early war to date. A hospital in gaza hit. Some of the images that we are going to show you, because they are screened and vetted through our process and are part of the reality of the war on the ground, are, we warn you before they come and im give thug warning before you see them, are extremely graphic. According to palestinian authorities, hundred worse killed there and hundreds more injured. The cause as of this hour remains highly disputed. A gaza official saying this was caused by an israeli air strike. Tonight, israel is formally arguing their intelligence shows the blast was caused by what was essentially a misplaced palestinian rocket. The Military Vernacular is friendly fire, if that were the case. The account is contested and well update as we get more information. Theres also protests as you can see here in the west bank. This is of course outside of gaza. This is a different area that is considered occuied by the United Nations according to their view of the conflick, and these are protesters in an anger or solidarity regarding whats happened. Back to gaza, the humanitarian crisis is getting worse. Water, power, food, medicine, all in short supply. This follows up on the reporting last night where it is a life and death situation for people, children in these hospitals in gaza. The death toll there up to 3,000 with other 12,000 injured. In israel, the death toll is 1,400 with 4,000 injured. Israeli families worried about the fate of the nearly 200 hostages taken by hamas, which has now claimed they would release all hostage, they say, if israel stopped the gaza air strikes. Theres also the kidnapped. Posters seeking any help or information about people like you see on your screen. Hamas released video of this individual, which we are not showing according to our standards tonight. But we are telling you about the information. A 21yearold israeli french woman who is according to hamas and the information we have, now in their custody as one of the many civilian hostages. Were also sharing instead of the hamas video some new testimonial account. This is from her mother who spoke with nbcs lester holt. I sit and i watch the video and i wanted to die, because i saw my baby so scared and so i mean, this is the Worst Nightmare for every mother in the world. Were joined by the new yorkers Susan Glasser and hala gorani. Susan, what do you see there in the ongoing humanitarian crisis we just showed, both whats happening on the ground in gaza, including dueling accounts about the most recent strike . Last night we were covering what was defined as israeli air strikes, that it affected so many. And this sort of slow dribble of information about these civilian hostage held by hamas . Yeah, i mean, look, its another terrible, terrible day. While we have conflicting claims of responsibility, the bottom line is that hundred of people have been killed today in this gaza hospital attack. Its a terrible thing, and we are likely in store for more of it in this war, and that is a terrible reality. Its unfortunately foreign correspondents learn very quickly that first reports from an attack like this are very rarely fully accurate, so its important to take a deep breath, especially in this age of misinformation and disinformation and, you know, try to understand what really did occur there. But, you know, our empathy and horror for the victims is not dependent upon who ultimately fired that rocket. This war is going to be terrible. I am struck by the scene of the president of the United States flying into this uncertainty, departing right now at this hour for the middle east, for this visit to israel at a moment in time when the stakes could not be higher for him politically or for the region. The reports the arab leaders he was supposed to meet with are refusing to participate in summit. Jordan has canceled it. So well see if its back on by the time the president of the United States gets there, but its its as volatile and uncertain a trip as ive ever seen a president take. Hmm. Well pull this up in full and rerack it here. This is out of our control rooms, the president climbing the step there is. This is just moments ago, and as susan says were watching so much, many with heavy hearts, but this is the president of the United States boarding this aircraft to enter a very hot war zone, where things are very close together. Hala, im sure you can speak to us. Moments ago, the president getting ready to depart for israel. This is an area, hala, where things are very close together. The danger to civilians as weve discussed in many areas, but the president will be on the ground in this war zone. Right, and you were showing demonstrators in ramallah. They were protesting the president. He really doesnt control much of the west bank. It is pretty much in terms of its borders with the state of israel, its occupied, there are check points everywhere, settlements everywhere. And when you say that things are very close together, they absolutely are. The distances are small, but the ability to travel from one place to the other is very limited. The distances are also small regionally, because there have been increasing skirmishes between hezbollah and the Israeli Military in Northern Israel and southern lebanon. But as far as the hospital is concerned, it is already igniting widespread rage in the arab world. Hezbollah that i just mentioned, is calling for a day of rage tomorrow, and what susan has said is true ultimately its the deaths, the images of the palestinians in that hospital that are circulating already widely and that are igniting passions all around the arab world as well as in some western capitals where weve seen demonstrations as well against israeli actions in gaza. I want to play a little bit of a different interview. We showed lester holt, our colleague whos on the ground there reporting, as are many people from our teams. But he also spoke tea Hostage Negotiator about where this all goes. Lets take a listen. What is the potential bad news for families of ohio state okay. S . Is there a potential a deal doesnt get done . Theres a very big possibility a deal doesnt get done, and the Ground Invasion begins and theyre focused on uing intelligence to find them. The hope that the will leave their post and desert the hostages. Suz susan . Its been nine plus days they have been under the control of whoever took them, hamas or possibly just individual actors. We dont really even know. Weve received little confirmation. Israel said about 200 captives are there. We know they have been a focus of intense diplomacy by Antony Blinken as hes traveled around looking for countries that have an open line to hamas, have a dialogue. What concerns me is we have very little indication of any real diplomatic movement at this point, and time is running short. Many of the people were injured who were taken. Weve all seen videos that suggest you know, its hard to imagine theyre getting much in fact way of care in capitaltivity. Were talking about babies who are Ohio Statages and old people. I think its a grim situation as far as the hostages go, and thats an important factor here as well, because thats shaping what israels plans are for its Military Response to this. We dont know what those plans are, but a Ground Invasion would, as your interview pointed out, really limit the options available for getting them out without further harm. What else on the Foreign Policy front, susan, do you think the president President Biden wants to convey in the act of going there and in what he says tomorrow . Well, a number of things. First of all, there is the immediate concern of the potential expansion of this conflict, the possibility of a wider war is one that i think really alarms american officials as well as all in the region. Hala made the point i think its an excellent point hezbollah has not yet joined in a full way, but there has been skirmishing up at the northern border. I think its a key reason the u. S. Has sent not once, but two Battle Carrier Groups to the region and has the real possibility of pulling the United States even more directly into the conflict. So thats number one. And then the other point i think that youre going to hear from President Biden privately certainly the israelis will hear it and well hear some of it publicly as well what is israels plan for the day after . People dont doubt that militarily they can go into gaza and take physical control of it, but to what end . What kind of government do they envision in gaza after they eliminate hamas militarily as they say they are going to do. I think biden wants to discuss that and possibly to urge, as he did publicly the other day in his interview, that israel not contemplate a reoccupation of gaza. Yeah, and the last point you make overlaps with what hala mentioned as well regarding the civilian population in west bank and how all these things are interconnected. If you do in fact physically, operationally basically bar limit, Decapitate Hamas leadership, you still have all the people and you also have people who are agitating for responses to what theyre seeing there, even some of it, as we were careful to note, is contested tonight. All of that is very difficult. Thanks to both of you for your time. Well be coming back to you i expect in the days ahead. Later tonight, we will hear from a veteran of peace talks like you see on your screen, a veteran of military operations, a diplomat, an Individual Whools who also was one of the prime rivals to bee bee netanyahu. It was two weeks ago exactly when he was ousted as a small number of republicans joined with democrats for what amounted to a no confidence vote. Today was the first full house vote since that all began, and it began with a push to put in someone who is, if this is possible, basically more hardline than trump ally Kevin Mccarthy, and that is Maga Conservative Fire Brand jim jordan, who failed on the first ballot. 20 republicans broke from jordan in that first round. He was seen there walking out today, characteristically holding the jacket, not wearing it. Now, if you think about this, heres what we learned today. Jim jordan can go anywhere with this. He could become speaker. But this vote shows that essentially he had double the number of republicans opposing him as those who broke with mccarthy two weeks ago. Remember, if youre doing the math because these are usually party line votes. You dont have to think about the congress when we count typical votes. Were counting a party position, so mccarthy was negative eight. Thats enough to force him out because its such a thin majority. Mccarthy today was seen taking it all in, because minus eight to him looked pretty good to what jordan went through. Jordans vote count today was more than minus eight, which means as of this moment, jim jordan, who might be the fire brand in all of this, has proven as of todays vote less popular in the Republican Party than what they sometimes call the jello vote, the minus eight for mccarthy. This could change tomorrow. Its just a reminder of what it means to govern in this party at this time with the open incriminations, large and frankly, quite small. There have been now two weeks building of this kind of infighting, the dysfunction on display. I think some of the Pressure Campaigns have backfired, they have not worked. I am concerned that congressman jordan has not agreed to say that donald trump lost the election and joe biden won the election. Theyre trying couples counciling for people who want to kill each other. I cannot overstate how angry some republican members are. If it doesnt work, then were kind of back to, all right, maybe we got to look at Kevin Mccarthy again. Is that where this all ends . Going back to Kevin Mccarthy . And could he really get back to votes from those people who famously ousted him . This is whats in public. Ill remind you, we do our calls, or producers, team of journalists. Sometimes what you get off the record and not off tv is more intensive. Just imagine how tense these angry back and forths are getting. Tomorrow will be a second rebounded of voting. Nobody knows if jim jordan is going up or down from there. Ive heard both side os that argument today, and if not him, then who . I dont have the answer for you. But Jackie Al Mayny might.
