gaza city and destroy the enclaves current leadership. they're also saying the idf will soon invade the gaza strip with tens of thousands of soldiers. >> secretary of state anthony blinken is now in cairo, egypt. he is expected to speak with the president of egypt later this hour. this comes as the rafah crossing point between egypt and gaza remains closed this morning as egyptian authorities continue their negotiations with israel and the united states over allowing u.s. citizens safe passage into egypt. >> meanwhile, the u.s. embassy in israel's offer americans and immediate relatives evacuation by sea from haifa to cyprus on monday at 8 am local time. it is on a space limited basis. the embassy says chartered flights are also being arranged. >> according to the israeli defense forces, over 1300 people have been killed in israel since the fighting began with the gaza health minister reporting more than 2300 people have been killed in gaza. joining me now, nbc news correspondent from the israeli lebanon border. josh. >> hey there, good morning. as the tensions continue to escalate on the border with gaza, here on the northern border with lebanon, there is also a heightened state of alert. we are right here on the border, just behind me this is lebanon. you can see the tower here, right on the border between israel and lebanon where just a few hours ago, israel's military declared this entire area a closed military zone, extended about two and a half miles into israel. the public is being kept out of this area for their own safety. israel says that it is also restricting access to gps, basically location based apps on your phone because they are calling it active combat. this follows a fatal attack from lebanon into israel in the past several hours. there have been other cross border clashes. there are real concerns here about a second front opening in this war with hezbollah, the military here now amassing troops, tanks, armored personnel carriers, establishing checkpoints to ensure they have the northern border under control. >> nbc news correspondent, josh lederman, please stay safe. thanks for the story. >> joining me now, jeremy bash. former chief of staff at the cia and the pentagon during the obama administration. jeremy, thank you very much for being here. the new york times is reporting that the idf goal is to eliminate the political and military leadership of hamas. is that even possible? >> it's going to be difficult, jonathan. i think unfortunately as necessary because we have seen just a week ago the largest slaughter, the largest massacre of jews since the holocaust. take that in for one second. with a democracy like israel, what has to contend with. it's a catch 22. it's a horrible predicament that the leaders of hamas of putts the people of israel, and also the people of gaza in. using the people of gaza as human shields, telling the civilians to stay put even as the hamas leadership cuts in, robinson takes care of their own families. i mean, the israeli defense forces are going to try to go in and take out specific commanding control notes. if you look at a terrain map of gaza city, it's not a bulldoze operation with tanks, as is sometimes portrayed. it's an intelligence driven, specific, targeted ground operation. it's a combined arms operation with ground and air, and naval assets. unmanned systems, another long range fires, diego specifically after targets that are specifically linked to hamas. i think that's appropriate, we do the same thing. that's the number for 40,000 of our citizens, if we had hundreds of people held hostage. >> jeremy, how much of a challenge will that caused a tunnel network before the idf. not just in terms of destroying, hamas, but also in terms of rescuing the more than 150 hostages believed to be held in gaza? >> it's extraordinarily difficult, jonathan. unfortunately, i don't think anyone has a playbook for how to go into hostage rescue. we're talking about this large number of hostages, including not just, you know, well bought, able bodied adults, but children. we're talking about the elderly. we're talking about the disabled. you know, as you mentioned quite rightly, hamas is built-in underground city of tunnels to store their weapons, store their rockets, use that to move around the gaza strip, smuggle author of their people, and their vehicles, and their weapons. if they have the hostages done in the tunnels, it's going to be the most difficult fighting the idf has ever had to encounter. >> let me ask you a question, i asked a previous guest in the previous hour, at that, is we know that the tunnel system exists under gaza. but does the idf have an actual map of that tunnel system? or, as the previous guest said, the idf knows where the entrances and exits are, but it's a mystery what's in between? >> my sense is that it's an impartial map, yes. i agree with that analysis, which is that several of the entry points are probably well-known to the idf, but the exact place sane underground of different weapons caches, and different rooms, in different places where you can hold hostages, it's probably not fully known to the idf. that's, jonathan, it complicates things. as you reference in your setup here, the idf is going to have to go in and look for specific hamas leaders, go in and look for specific hamas places, vehicles, weapons catch, as walker factories. the people of gaza are being victimized. i don't think we should sugarcoat. that that's why the idf said leave. that's why they said we do not want to target you. the people of southern israel, you know, those are hundreds of thousands of people. they're also on the move as well. they're under rocket fire from hamas even at this hour, as you've reported here on the show. this is affecting civilian populations of both sides of the border. that is a tragedy that lay squarely at the hands of terrorist leaders. >> so jeremy, the big question is, what next? if israel is successful in destroying hamas, how would you answer that question? >> honestly, i think the gaza, at the end of the day, has to become a demilitarized area. it has to have a protectorate status with egypt. egypt controls the gaza strip from the early 1950s until 1967. since 2005, one gaza has not been occupied by israel, but actually has been self governed, govern first by the palestinian authority and then a year later a coup held by hamas of the last 15 years, they've maintain good relations with egyptian government. the egyptians did not want gaza when israel tried to return closets egypt in 1977 as part of the accords. nevertheless, egypt will have to step up here. >> jeremy, the likelihood of iran getting involved, if indeed a ground invasion of gaza happens? >> i'm worried about this, jonathan. they have seen an opportunity on israel's northern border to use hezbollah and iran's hamas's main proxy. we'll have to see how things go. i think the u.s. deterrence posture, whether carrier strike group, sits pain and important role in saying to iran, don't think about it. >> jeremy bash, thank you very much for coming on the show this morning. >> thanks, jonathan. >> our special coverage of the israel-hamas war continues a heads. we'll discuss the rise of antisemitic attacks across the world. later in the hour, a religious roundtable delving into the spiritual aspects of what could quickly turn into a holy war. please stay with us. ease stay with us. this is american infrastructure, a prime target for cyberattacks. but the same ai-powered security that protects all of google also defends these services for everyone who lives here. ♪ are you sweating?! didn't you use old spice dry spray? how did these people fit into the equation? i think we have to take seriously the idea that jerusalem is incredibly important religious site, and you cannot kill in the name of peace. it seems counterintuitive, but i think we have to emphasize that. we can't take that religious illiteracy, this idea that, because someone else says it's a religious conflict, that we bring, that important back into the united states and say okay it has to be religious conflict here in the united states. i think this is something we have to keep in mind, there has to be a solution to peace, and the solution to pieces that come from not over determining the role of religion while taking the role of religion seriously. >> >> rob i stinson, this is katie phang. i wanted to ask, there's been -- and i even had this conversation with jonathan greenblatt from the adl before you guys came on the show. it's very easy to conflate this idea of being anti jewish and being anti israel, when this is going on, when you kind of forget that this is a terrorist group that is perpetrating death and this type of brutality on people in israel. is that something that your confronted with, rabbi, when you're trying to have conversations with members of your own congregation? when you're trying to find some rationalization of what's going on here? >> people are really hurting, because they're being called upon to be experts in a complicated geopolitical conflict. the idea that every individual jewish person is somehow, first of all, responsible for the actions of the israeli government, second of all, all knowledgeable when it comes to the israeli palestinian conflict, and third, our expert theologians, is an impossible responsibility, even for a rabbi to bear, much less the average person. so this is undue pressure placed on so many individual troops in the united states. and you add to this the campaign of intimidation and hate. the idea that the leader of hamas would call for a global day of rage, a global day of jihad, essentially, against jews all over the world, including the united states, has turned what could have been a very painful and complicated conflict in the middle east into a global anti-semitic campaign. and so, we need to do our best to separate the two with nuance and love. but there is a real conflation right now of hatred of israel and hatred of jews, and it shows the evident relationship between the two. and i do think the two are deeply connected, and that we need to work very, very hard to make sure that individual jews in israel and in the united states and around the world are not blamed for a terrible situation that is beyond the control of any governments, and any individual at this time. >> jonathan, do you mind -- >> reverend louis, i'm going to have you answer when we come back. we need to take a quick break, because both katie and i both want this very important conversation to continue and it will when we come back. will when we come back. my frequent heartburn had me taking antacid after antacid all day long but with prilosec otc just one pill a day blocks heartburn for a full 24 hours. for one and done heartburn relief, prilosec otc. one pill a day, 24 hours, zero heartburn. trelegy for copd. ♪ birds flyin' high, you know how i feel. ♪ ♪ breeze driftin' on... ♪ [coughing] ♪ ...by, you know how i feel. ♪ if you're tired of staring down your copd,... ♪ it's a new dawn, ♪ ♪ it's a new day... ♪ ...stop settling. ♪ ...and i'm feelin' good. ♪ start a new day with trelegy. no once-daily copd medicine has the power to treat copd in as many ways as trelegy. with three medicines in one inhaler, trelegy makes breathing easier for a full 24 hours, improves lung function, and helps prevent future flare-ups. trelegy won't replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure before taking it. do not take trelegy more than prescribed. trelegy may increase your risk of thrush, pneumonia, and osteoporosis. call your doctor if worsened breathing, chest pain, mouth or tongue swelling, problems urinating, vision changes, or eye pain occur. take a stand, and start a new day with trelegy. ask your doctor about once-daily trelegy, and save at trelegy.com [city ambience sounds] [car screech] [car door slam] [camera shutter sfx] introducing ned's plaque psoriasis.
