israel/hamas war. msnbc special coverage continues now with katy tur. >> good to be with you, i'm katy tur. an extensive attack against military targets in gaza strip is underway. thousands upon thousands of leaflets dropped by the israeli military warning everyone in the north to get out. the flyers telling the people there, according to a translation by reuters, gaza city has turned into a battlefield, for your safety and the safety of your families, evacuate your homes immediately and head to the south. but how do you get 1.1 million people to evacuate, and to do it quickly. and thousand do you do it amid the rubble of an already destroyed city? and how can you do it when the group governing them, hamas, is telling them to stay put, that israel is conducting psychological warfare in an attempt to displace them from their homes? or when that same group uses civilians as human shields that is reportedly blocking the path out, according to secretary of state antony blinken. the u.n. is now basically begging israel to reconsider, pleading for the government to transform what they say is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation. we keep reporting the situation in gaza is dire. you can see it from these images, and yet, by every hour, it gets even worse. one palestinian surgeon tells nbc news all hospitals are now trauma centers, and that she can't even comprehend the number of patients she has had, and many of them have no chance to have living. she expects, she herself will soon be a victim. >> no one can leave gaza. no one can enter gaza. there's no crossing borders, nothing left for anyone to do. it's a huge, big cage that we are trapped inside. whole neighborhoods have been wiped out from the map, and whole families have been wiped out from the history, and that's not fair. >> if hospitals are forced to move, the world health organization says it will be a quote, death sentence, for those on life support in those hospitals. for its part, the idf acknowledges the evacuation will take time, and says there is no firm deadline. still, though, the amassing on the border continues. the strikes are just beginning, suggest thag something big is going to happen big soon and news from the idf that at least some soldier are already on the ground inside gaza. they say they are conducting raids and looking for hostages. joining us now from northern israel is nbc news foreign correspondent josh lederman. thanks for being with us. i know the situation down to the south where a lot of our reporters have been is getting quite hairy, what can you tell us about what's happening inside the country? >> reporter: we just learned about these raids. these are raids that the israeli military say they conducted on the ground in the gaza strip in the last 24 hours. the military says that they went in to try to root out the threat of terrorists as well as weapons in the gaza strip, but they also say that part of this was about those hostages there, katy. they say that the israeli troops were able to search for and obtain evidence that will be useful in trying to free those hostages in the future. now, as far as we know, during the course of these raids, they did not free any hostages. if they did, they did not disclose that as of now. this is the first instance that we know about that the israeli military has gone in on the ground into the gaza strip since this began. there's obviously been air strikes, but now we know they have been on the ground in the gaza strip as we're anticipating this much broader ground incursion with the palestinians in the northern gaza strip haven't been given that 24-hour notice to evacuate to the south. that deadline is set to expire about three hours from now, midnight local, about 5:00 p.m. in new york. >> josh, the government of israel said it can't live alongside hamas any longer, it's not possible. they're trying to root out everybody who's involved in hamas, everybody who's involved in planning these attacks, coordinating these attacks, perpetrating these attacks. they want them gone. they don't want them governing gaza any longer. they're asking gazans to move south, which we said is extremely difficult. the u.n. is begging israel to reconsider. the world health organization is talking about how it's a death sentence to those barely surviving already in hospitals. what is the israeli government saying publicly about this right now? >> reporter: to your point, they're trying to eliminate the entirety of the threat from hamas, while minimizing civilian casualties, that's incredibly difficult to do because of how enmeshed hamas is in the civilian population there. in the notice to civilians in northern gaza to go south, there are tunnels that hamas is using underneath residences. there are buildings that civilians are inhabiting that hamas is using for its own activities. that makes it very difficult to distinguish, to do a pinpoint operation where you go in there and try to deal with this hamas threat, eliminate it off the face of the earth as prime minister netanyahu has said, without inflicting a significant number of civilian casualties, and so that is what the israeli government is bracing for. they say they're doing everything they can that's possible. they say there still is time for civilians in the northern gaza strip to get to somewhere safe in the south, but that time is running out, and aid organizations, the u.n. and others who are working in the gaza strip say it's impossible to relocate 1.1 million people with infrastructure that has been nearly demolished in less than 24 hours without causing a mass disaster. >> we see people on foot. we see people where it's possible in their cars. a lot of people are on the back of, i don't want to call them carriages but, you know, flat beds drawn by horses. what you're looking at is the rubble of what's happening in gaza, that's a torturous image of a teddy bear there, it's gut wrenching. what you're looking at below is shot, the largest medical center in gaza. they say, again, yesterday they said they only had four more days of fuel for this hospital to power its generators, that would mean three more days as of today, if it still stands, meaning on sunday this whole system could fall apart, lots of people are flooding into hospitals, the compounds of hospitals hoping for some place to stay that will be safe. hoping these areas do not get bombed. josh, thank you very much. let's go now to nbc news foreign correspondent matt bradley who is at the israel-lebanon border where things have been heating up again. >> reporter: i'm here in southern lebanon, just on the border with israel. i'm just across the border with the northern most town of israel, matula, and this town, in just the past couple of hours, we heard from the israeli defense orders, they issued an order saying this town needed to be evacuated immediately, and we actually watched as israeli defense forces troops raced around the streets. they were basically scurrying around. it looked as though they were taking cover in certain places, clearly quite afraid that they might be taking sniper shots or some other shot from here across the border from lebanon where i'm standing now. now, off my right shoulder, there's been quite a lot of action over the past couple of hours. we have seen artillery being fired from lebanon, and into israel, at least one of those was intercepted and fell down in what looked like a wooded area. i'm not sure if you can see it, that sort of reddish, orange light over there, that was a fire that was started by what looked like that rocket that was felled by israeli anti-aircraft or antimissile fire. so that's a situation that is still ongoing right now. but this is a situation that really pales in comparison to what we have been seeing in southern israel or just over in gaza. it is much much much less violent, but it contains the seeds of what could become a major conflagration. if hezbollah joins the fight, with iran, which also backs hamas, we could see this war being internationalized, another country entering, another major militant group whose power exceeds that of hamas, it would split the military fight into two fronts. the israeli military is sending new reservists all the way up here to the border, and it would drag in possibly more actors into a situation that had been until now mostly contained within israel and the palestinian territories, so this is a situation that could become so much worse than it already is. so much violence, so much more violent, and that's why folks here in lebanon, whenever they think of this, their minds go back to 2006, the war that raged across the border and killed around 1,500 lebanese people and devastated the infrastructure here in southern lebanon. all of this contains the ingredients for something so much more worse than what we have already been seeing. >> you have what matt is reporting there about it heating up in the border between lebanon and israel to the north. again, at the top of the hour, reported that the idf is currently attack, they say, military targets of the hamas terrorist organization throughout the gaza strip in an extensive attack. that's what the idf says, they say more details will follow. we have gotten word from prime minister benjamin netanyahu's office saying he's about to speak. they're calling it a special unexpected statement. we'll tune into that when it begins. joining me now is msnbc news foreign correspondent, kelly cobiella in jerusalem. we're getting the details of him preparing to speak. what are you hearing in jerusalem? >> reporter: this could be an announcement, an explanation about what's been happening on the ground in gaza. we understand from the idf there have been israeli boots on the ground in gaza but the idf has said that is for specific targeted operations to go after hamas militants. that this is not part of a larger ground invasion. so, you know, are we going to hear about some sort of planning, some sort of announcement about the ground operation that all of us expect but hasn't been announced yet by the government? we just don't know. that could be one avenue. there has also been an awful lot of diplomacy going on throughout the day today, to talk about humanitarian corridors and of course those civilians in gaza who have been told to evacuate to the south. could it be something about humanitarian corridors? we don't really know that yet either. this is an unexpected statement, so we're all kind of on tender hooks to hear what he has to say, katy. >> i know the country wants to hear about hostages. unclear if it will be about that either. kelly cobiella, thank you so much. speaking of hostages, joining me from the white house is nbc news correspondent gabe gutierrez, on the topic of hostages, the president spoke with the families of americans whose loved ones are being held in gaza. what do we know about that? >> reporter: the call lasted more than an hour. the president speaking remotely with families of 14 americans that are unaccounted for, and conveyed directly to these families that they have been in the administration's prayers, and in a clip just released this morning from "60 minutes," the president spoke about why it was so important for him to speak with these families. take a listen. >> why do you feel so strongly about speaking to these families personally on zoom? >> because i think they have to know that the president of the united states of america cares deeply about what's happening, deeply. we have to communicate to the world this is critical. this is not even human behavior. it's pure barbarism. and we're going to do everything in our power to get them home if we can find them. >> and according to the white house, those families also told the president specific information about their loved ones and spoke about the need to hopefully get them out safely. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. we also have the secretary of state antony blinken who is in qatar today saying he's working with regional allies to negotiate a release of the hostages and what the u.s. government is doing with those allies to get those hostages back but also to get the palestinian americans who are currently trapped in gaza somewhere between 500 to 600 of them, according to the state department. what is this country doing to make sure that they can get out? don't go anywhere. t go anywhere. building is shaking every minute or two minutes. i don't know if we are going to see another day. i hope my family is okay. >> the hospital system in gaza is on the verge of collapse. that was a surgeon from al shee fa medical center, the biggest hospital in gaza, and once again, yesterday, the director said there was only enough fuel to power the generators to fuel the hospital for four more days. sky news special correspondent diana magna has more. >> reporter: hamas will be crushed is what israel's prime minister has said, and this is the sound of israeli vengeance. who knows how many inside these body bags were hamas militants, and how many more were not, just palestinian civilians trying to live their lives, now trying to bury their dead, when the cemeteries are full to bursting. there is so much loss here already, and israel shows no sign of stopping. how can you console this kind of pain? a boy in gaza's hospital shaking like a tiny sparrow, no child should have to be broken like this to suffer on both sides from a conflict they had no part in creating. but because the bombs keep falling, the patients keep flooding in. this is chaos, a confusion stretches of injured everywhere you look, and remember, when the generators stop, and israel's total blockade of electricity, fuel and water, this will get even worse. >> translator: there were around 20 apartments, about 250 people living in them, all of them women, children, and old people like me. >> reporter: israel's air strikes are relentless, and people take shelter where they can. at the iron hotel in gaza city, the corridors are rammed. just one nurse to keep the wounded here with the hotel medical kit. we need paramedics, this woman says, but how would they get here? when the bombs outside keep falling, 100 meters or so away. her husband's clothes were torn from his body by the force of the blast. he's confused and unsteady. he checks to see where he was hit. tries to still the ringing in his ears. >> translator: a missile hit in the square. it was glass, metal, it was like doomsday. >> reporter: on alexa tv, run by hamas, and still operational, a call tr further resistance across the arab world. but hamas's terrible actions have resulted in this. >> joining me now is msnbc contributor, i want to get top line since we have never been able to discuss this, what your thoughts are, what you're looking for as this unfolds? >> reporter: i think my first thought is what is the end game for israel, the end game is the complete eradication of hamas. israel and its military has mounted two incursions in the last two years, once in 2009, once in 2014, that this would be certainly not the first war between hamas and israel. the goal of the blockade initially in 2007 was to prevent hamas from arming itself. that has not worked. it hasn't worked because as we saw just a few days ago, the deadliest hamas attack against israeli civilians took place, hamas fighters are better trained than they were a few years ago. they've established networks of tunnels, secret hiding places and ways to acquire arms. so if that is the goal using the same method that has been used over the last decade and a half, logic would dictate is not going to work. in other words, a purely military solution to this issue is not going to be effective. so that being said, there has to be a political and diplomatic solution in the immediate sort of future here, looking at countries in the region that have influence, qatar, egypt, turkey as well, in the immediate next few weeks to prevent a complete calamitous catastrophe is something i would be looking for. further, of course, down the line, some sort of negotiation that leads to a more permanent solution, rather than just kind of removing the military threat of violence, and then just kind of putting a band-aid on it for it to explode in a few years, katy. >> i think that's a valid concern. again, look at what we did with eradicating al qaeda. left a vacuum open for isis to come up. there has to be concerns, what takes its place. let me ask you about the palestinian people. i think that what they want in all of this, especially the people of gaza isn't so clear. who do they want ruling them? i know that there was a public opinion poll, if you can trust it, out of the strip, but a few years ago, that said about 30% of the people there support hamas. can you give us an idea of who they want governing them, what sort of i don't want to say state, obviously, but what sort of region, what sort of living conditions do they desire? >> i think it's very difficult to tell. there haven't been elections since hamas took over, some 15 years ago. knowing gazans, being in touch with people inside of gaza, i can tell you that their concern is a lot less political. a lot less about which party or which political system they support a lot more about just being able to live normal lives, about having some freedom of movement. you know, 80% of the gaza strip lives in poverty. there's about 50% unemployment. this latest round of air strikes is going to create a situation especially if one-half of the gaza strip from the densely populated urban side has to kind of internally displace itself to the south, then you're really looking potentially at a strip of land made up of tents. it will just become a big strip of tents because most of the big buildings, israel will target in order to try to get to hamas and its stockpile of weapons, and its leadership will have been destroyed. when you speak to people in gaza now, it's more about i want to survive, and if i can't survive, some people are basically posting on social media, this may be the end and if this is the end, that's that. leaving the strip is much less a desire because there's concern they may not be able to return, so just getting back to your question, what is the degree of support, i don't think it's high but there's no way to measure there. there hasn't been an election. i think it's more about just trying to live a normal life. >> hamas is telling, you know, reportedly telling, or they are telling the palestinians in the north of gaza not to leave. warning them that it's going to be another forced evacuation, they're not able to come back, and then israel wants to take over that land. that's what they're saying to the palestinians which obviously historically resonates. thank you so much for joining us. stick around if you can, we're waiting for benjamin netanyahu to speak. we're going there if he does. we're going to take a quick break and go for a moment to capitol hill. there's big news happening in the speaker's race. don't go anywhere. ker's race don't agonywhere. i have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. i know hamas has said that 13 have died in israeli bombings. nbc news can't confirm that, and the israelis have said it's not true. are you surprised there hasn't been any concrete news? >> the numbers are coming out slowly. israel is looking at casualties. the families haven't been notified. i get told soon after that, they're not accurate, they're changing as we speak. this is, i don't want to say unprecedented but we have a degree of chaos out there, people looking in multiple theaters, at the same time, simultaneously, and this might continue for a while, the operation itself, and the lack of clarity. >> there's so much heat here given the scale of the atrocity we saw perpetrated on saturday and the images have been coming out by the day, and hurting the country more than it's already hurting, the awful images, i love to describe and the fact that so many in the country have direct relatives or know somebody who's serving in the israeli army. i know that you have a family member of yours that is currently serving. how does that change the way that israel responds to this, and how does it change the way the population feels about what israel does next? >> yeah, sure, and i have more than one family member. i'm not aware of anybody in israel or the broadish community, people have been wounded, killed, serving, we haven't seen anything of the scope like this right now. in practical terms, this translates into the wind at israel's back, with the international support coming from the white house, the administration, other countries as well, and a whole string of solidarity visits from foreign leaders. you know, this is everybody said repeatedly, this will not be a short operation. this can't go back to what it was in the first place, the sort of repeated every couple of years, to have a squirmish, one degree or another to hamas. saying that hamas will not survive this, almost notwithstanding consequences, that has to happen, and i think we're looking at something that's qualitatively different than before. >> you say that obviously it's going to be fueled by the grief and the anger that is currently on display in israel. it's going to be delicate because what we saw today and hala, you can speak to this, what we saw today across the middle east were giant, large-scale protests in support of palestinians. sometimes in the face of their governments seeking normalization, you know, so what sort of -- how careful and maybe that's not the right way to ask it, but i will. how careful does israel need to be in the way that it reacts next? >> there are always multiple -- >> hala, go ahead, and shalom, i want to get you quickly. >> reporter: just a word or two on the regional aspect. the government said to enter into normalization talks with israel, without taking into account or requiring or demanding some sort of diplomatic solution or an ultimate frame work that involves the palestinians will not have -- they will have frustrated their own populations because their own populations saw these abraham accords with arab country that is don't have really much political or diplomatic relationship with israel, anyway, as having bypassed the palestinian cause, if you will, now the palestinian cause in the eyes of arab populations, not their leadership, is something that has to be taken into account front and center, and one thing, katy, briefly i want to add. in 2006, when the war, the hezbollah, israel war took place, very soon after that very short war, i went to syria, which is a majority sunni country. there wasn't a street without a hezbollah flag flying. in the arab world, when an army or militant group is seen as taking on the mighty army of israel, usually there will be a public opinion siding with the group that is fighting israel. that is, if you will, on the streets of the arab world, which would explain in some ways why there's this, you know, ground swell of emotion in favor of palestinians in arab capitals and elsewhere in the region? >> getting a sunni population to support a shia population is a big thing. shalom, i want you to answer that question before i've got to get to the other big news on capitol hill. >> sure. obviously, this is an all hands on deck situation. there are myriad levels of complexity to this. as you said earlier, the hostage piece, how do you manage an operation with that. the regional aspect is a big deal too. one thing we know, despite, not despite, the one thing we know about how this will play out, outcome will have a huge impact and reverberate if israel's able to protect its strength, and if america's support remains strong, americana is restored and, you know, people have confidence and continue engagement in the region, conceivably the trust toward normalization will get on track as well. that takes time. there will be casualties along the way, i think we're all going to be watching to see how this unfolds, and that will be a compass towards where we go next. >> shalom lip ner and hala gorani, thank you very much. republicans are holding a secret ballot after steve scalise dropped out of the speaker's race. if steve scalise can't forge a plan, who can. joining me now is "punchbowl news" and political analyst, jake sherman, and ryan nobles, thank you very much for waiting. i understand there's a vote happening right now? >> reporter: that's what we believe is happening behind closed doors behind us, between two men, jim jordan, the runner up in the first nominating contest and fell short, but after steve scalise dropped out, he reenergized his campaign for speaker, but he does have a challenger in the form of congressman austin scott of georgia, which did come as a surprise to many. scott is not a well known member of congress but someone who was a kevin mccarthy ally and someone who has been very concerned about the way this whole process has played itself out, and would like to see the conference get back to some level of governance. there's nobody standing outside the room that believes austin scott will be successful in this endeavor. he does serve as a proxy for the anti-jordan group, which there is a sizable number of in that room. the margin of victory for jim jordan in that room is going to tell us a lot about whether or not he will then encourage speaker patrick mchenry to take the race to the house floor. there has been talk among republicans that that should be the next step. even if they don't have 217 volts guaranteed, they should take it to the floor, go through the process. force them to vote on the record, put them on the pressure of being under the bright lights of public on the house floor and go through the series of votes we saw with kevin mccarthy until a speaker is chosen. we don't know yet if that's the plan. probably going to depend a lot on what the margin of victory is for jim jordan. we're waiting to get a result of the vote which could be happening as we speak. >> jake, when i think of you and your reporting in congress, i imagine that harry potter, extendable ear device, that maybe you have those in all sorts of rooms because you have such great reporting on all of this. what are you hearing about this race and whether -- you can see some lawmakers -- who is that walking by right now, is that dusty johnson. >> dusty johnson, yes. >> i guess we'll see if he says anything. >> let us know, ryan, if you get anything. jake, talk while ryan is chasing. >> while ryan does he job, i'll talk to you. dusty johnson, a moderate republican who endorsed and nominated jim jordan for speaker of the house. now, what ryan said is right. if jim jordan had 99 votes against steve scalise, let's say he gets another 50, 140, he's still quite a ways away from becoming speaker, it's going to be challenging for jordan. i'll be honest with you, there's a lot of people. allies of kevin mccarthy and steve scalise who don't want jordan to be speaker. could he get there, yes, and what ryan is alluding to, if he takes this to the floor, it's going to be difficult for people to vote against him. why is it going to be difficult, because you can get a primary challenge. jordan is a favorite of the right. all of the dynamics in one bri, and people are sick of this. republicans understand they are a complete clown show, and then there's the practical aspect of this here, which is the government shuts down in 30-something days, and israel needs money, and they can't keep having these meetings over and over again, without electing a speaker. they look like idiots. there's that added dynamic, that is lingering in the background as well. >> is there going to be a vote today, jake? i tend not to think so, unless ryan has new information, which he looks like he might. i don't know. i don't think there will be a vote today, but i couldn't be sure. there's a lot of democrats out of town, and a lot of republicans out of town. when they began their morning session, there were 209 republicans. i imagine there's 212 or so. they need 218 for a quorum. i could see jordan wanting to do it. we reported, and i'll let you go back to ryan after this, if they elect a speaker, with not a lot of democrats present, the democrats will seek to vacate the new speaker next week and revote it next geek. >> geez, louise, when somebody nods their head really big, that's when they have news to tell us. ryan, what do you got? >> reporter: i don't want to over play this, it's not that exciting, but dusty johnson told us they haven't gotten to the voting session part of the meeting yet. they're still in the nominating part. the speeches are happening. they haven't gotten to the voting part yet. what he said was that kind of what we've all been alluding to here is that, you know, when they see t outcome of that vote, that will determine what the next step is, and there's concern about vacancies, people not being here, concern about the margin, a lot of things at play here, this could go in a million different directions between when they emerge and when there's a vote on the floor. there's no telling how long it will be before they are officially ready to vote in a new speaker of the house. >> we'll see. sounds like it might not be anytime in the near future, this afternoon at least. jake sherman, ryan nobles, gentlemen, kpim capitol hill is a mess right now. there's no speaker of the house, and the white house is trying to get an aid package on israel through congress. gentlemen, thank you. defense secretary austin is in israel. what he's telling his counter part in the idf, and is there a point where the u.s. would get american soldiers involved? and does it ever include american boots on the ground? joining us now is pentagon correspondent courtney kube. when lloyd austin says total support, what does that mean? >> reporter: the u.s. is already sending a bunch of resources in, in fact, another plane load went in today. secretary austin was there to greet the plane of ammunition. this includes things like intercepters for the iron dome, air defense system. that's been critical over the last few days, and last few years, for israel defending against rockets, short range ammunition, and mortars. in addition to that, the u.s. is providing other ammunition, including dpcims, which you and i may call cluster bombs, and some kits, they call them jdm conversion kits. what that means in english is it takes a bomb, and turns it from a dumb bomb to a smart bomb, meaning its guided. these could be critical for the israeli defense forces in the coming days and weeks in this ongoing fight, but as far as the idea of u.s. boots on the ground, there are some u.s. special operators, and troops on the ground, in israel right now. they were there before the assault started. more have gone in who were technical advisers, helping the israelis in their search for the potential for some sort of hostage rescue operations, but the idea, according to a number of u.s. officials who we've spoken with is not that the u.s. military would go into gaza, would be involved directly in those hostage rescues or in any of the fighting in gaza, it's more that the u.s. is supporting the israelis, also with intelligence support. we heard a little bit more from secretary of defense lloyd austin about his time, when everyone, you know, i'm sure remembers he was the head of u.s. central demand for three years. he worked with the israeli defense forces. he says he's known them for years. we heard a little bit more about his view of how the idf operates in situations like this. here's what he had to say. >> israel has a right to defend itself, and we will support israel's right to defend itself. we will continue to flow in security assistance, and i've worked with israeli forces over the years, over many years. as you know, i wore a uniform for 41 years. my experience in working with the israeli forces is they are professional. they are disciplined. and they are focused on the right things. >> reporter: katy, it's important to point out that that answer came in response to a question about the concern of civilian casualties in gaza, with these air strikes that have been ongoing, and also with what everyone expects to be a coming ground offensive. secretary austin saying multiple times, actually, during his visit to tel aviv earlier today. everyone needs to adhere to the law of war. he said it is important that both sides exercise restraint, and this is not about revenge here, but in addition to that, he praised the idf, israeli defense forces, saying they are a professional force, and he believes they will behave professionally going forward. >> courtney kube, thank you very much. let's bring in deputy commander of the united states european command, lieutenant general stephen twitty. thank you so much for joining us. how do you thread that needle if you were the israeli army? how do you do what they want to do which is root out hamas, without getting tens of thousands or thousands of civilians caught in the middle of it? we are already getting reports from the palestinian health ministry that three convoys, evacuees were just hit by israeli strikes. >> yeah, katy, good to be with you today. let me just say this, there are no good military options on the table here. none whatsoever. and so you heard the israeli defense forces talk about that they're going to eradicate hamas. to do that, obviously you have to get on the ground and extinguish every single hamas associated person in that 140 square mile block. and so they're going to own this. the israelis will have to own this, and if you think about it, when i say own this, after they go in as a ground force, there are going to be significant casualties on both sides, but more than that, there are going to be significant casualties on the civilian populous. they will have to own that. they will have to own the fact that there's no water, no food, no hospitals, and then have to own the fact that there's going to be a significant amount of displaced families in the south as well. and so this is going to be a tremendous undertaking. in the past, as i attack baghdad, we thought about the attack, but we didn't think about the after math. so think about the after math after this is done. if a humanitarian crisis is going to be more so, more significant, if i can say, than the actual attack itself, because the israelis will have to stay on the ground if they plan to eradicate. >> listen, we were just talking to a friend of the family of one of the guests we had on the other day. haneen, is there visiting family, she has three children, a newborn, her husband had gone home already to new jersey. she's a new jersey resident, a duel american-palestinian civilians or passport holder, and she right now, according to family members and friends is sleeping outside near the southern part of the border hoping that there's going to be a humanitarian path for her to get out, for palestinian americans to get out of gaza. again, there are 500 to 600 of them. it's dire for everybody down there. there's also a whole lot of anger in israel and grief and hurt over what happened now almost a week ago, and the losses that israel sustained, more death than any time since the holocaust. how as a nation, how do you justify? how do you hold those two things together? there's no good military option, but also you're screaming in pain from the slaughter of innocent civilians. when you're in the military, how do you hold those two things in your head at the same time? >> yeah, well, what i will tell you is it's extremely difficult. you have heard secretary austin, i used to work for secretary austin when we were in the army together. you heard him talk about now is not the time for revenge. if you're a professional military force, which i've served a lot of time, in a lot of operations with the israelis, i know many of the israelis that are out there fighting right now for the country. they are a professional force. when you're a professional force, you have to put the fact that something bad happened to your people and your country, and respect the rules of foreign conflict. and really do the right thing when you go in on the ground. it's all about humanity, and you have to protect the innocent people while still fighting the enemy. >> lieutenant general steph twitty. thank you very much for joining us. i appreciate your expertise. and what makes this conflict different than other wars israel has experienced?
