staff to evacuate gaza. >> our coverage continues now in the 11th hour with stephanie ruhle. >> good evening, once again, i'm stephanie ruhle. there is a major news break out of congress today, where steve scalise has dropped out of the race for speaker after being nominated by his fellow republicans. we'll have much more on the chaos in the house in just a moment. but first, let's begin our broadcast with israel. who is continuing its she siege on got a. launch more airstrikes six days after the hamas terror attacks. the bombing is intensifying, as israel is building up its military forces along the border with gaza for a potential ground invasion. at least 1300 people have been killed in israel, and at least 1500 have been killed in gaza. today, secretary of state antony blinken was in israel meeting with both prime minister netanyahu and israelis who survived the terror attacks. we get more from my colleague, lester holt, in tel aviv. >> tonight, israeli airstrikes relentlessly bombarding gaza with a potential ground invasion blue main. tensions escalated here for six days now. this newly released body camera video from saturday shows israeli forces firing at militants, and freeing hostages during hamas's attack. but perhaps the most disturbing images of this war so far were released today by israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu on social media. photos of babies so horrifying that we will not show you. >> hamas has shown itself to be an enemy of civilization. >> netanyahu sharing those images with secretary of state antony blinken, who traveled to israel in a show of support from the u.s.. >> it's simply depravity in the worst imaginable way. >> and secretary blinken had this emotional a moment with a survivor from a music festival. >> were strong here, we're powerful here in this place now. in tel aviv and everywhere. [applause] >> i sat down with him soon after. is there a risk, a greater risk, a regional war at this point? >> we're determined that they're not the. we deployed the largest aircraft carrier group that we have, the gerald r ford, to the region. we've taken other steps to make it very clear to anyone who might think of taking advantage of this moment, that that would be a big mistake. >> israeli forces say they have already dropped more than 6000 bombs on gaza, with power cut off, hospitals are chaotic and overwhelmed. israel vowing no humanitarian aid will be allowed into gaza until all hostages are released. >> meanwhile, the united nations and other international groups are sounding the alarm about the grave situation in gaza tonight. nbc's richard engel has more on that, and israel's air campaign against hamas. >> there is an air war in gaza tonight, with hamas firing barrages of rockets toward israel to little effect. israel's iron dome missile defense system launching tiny projectiles at supersonic speed, intercepting and destroying nearly all of them. israel's airstrikes are not been stopped. they are slamming into gaza. where there are no air defenses. the united nations is sounding the alarm of a growing humanitarian crisis. human rights groups are calling for civilians to be allowed to leave and for aid to enter the 139 square mile territory that's home to 2 million palestinians. 40% of them under 15. israel says it will keep attacking gaza until hamas is destroyed. the israeli military says it only targets hamas. israel's military is amassing tanks and troops along the border with gaza. >> its chief of staff saying, now it is time for war. and at the head of hamas and all of those who operate under him deserve to die. 22-year-old -- lives in gaza. >> the media is barely covering any news because of the situation. there was no electricity, there is no connection. the israelis are literally bombing everywhere. nowhere is safe. >> the gaza strip is bordered by israel, the mediterranean sea, and egypt. all exits are closed and locked. refugees are not screaming out. this isn't ukraine. no one is taking in the people of gaza. >> the united nations now says at least 12 of its own aid workers, including a doctor, have been killed in gaza. earlier on, this network, one u.s. describe the conditions there. >> on the ground are huge. we are running out of supplies. we do not have any access. we are not able to bring in any supplies inside the gaza strip. we have people on the ground who continue to respond, but they themselves have been impacted. -- the largest agency working in the gaza strip. we have 13,000 staff. these are teachers, doctors, nurses, sanitation workers, emergency personnel, but they also are terrified. they're exhausted already. they are terrified. they told me yesterday that this could be the end for all of us here in gaza. >> with that, i want to bring in msnbc chief correspondent, my dear friend ali velshi, joining us live from tel aviv, where it is just after six i am in the morning. ali, the situation in gaza is getting worse by the day. what do we need to know? >> probably by the hour, even by the minute, at this point, i spent all of the day about two and a half miles from the gaza border and towards the end of the day, the overnight hours, the pounding that you could hear only two and a half miles away, a missile lands, was just increasing. we would count four, five, six at a time. as you know, stephanie, from talking about this all week, the air force would take four hours, the navy would take four hours, they are pounding that. they're completely ready. the israelis are completely ready for a ground incursion. what's stopping them? a couple of things. one is they're trying to get as many civilians out of the way as they can. they've been dropping these leaflets, because there's no power, the phones are losing, charge this very bad cell service if you've got power. they're trying to get people to move away from the occupied parts of gaza. the way they have the gaza strip organize that when you see it on a map, it's a sort of a little thing like that, but the part near israel is the most populated. when you cross into gaza, within a couple of miles, here in gaza city. that's where most of the people live. 700,000 of the 2. 2 million people are right there. they want to move those people down south into where they would like most of them to go. we have displaced people that are in the hundreds of thousands of now, people who either left because their homes have been destroyed or because they expect their homes to be destroyed. so that's that part of things. as you, know they've run out of fuel, they're running the medication, and water, and food. on the israeli side of things, more and more images continue to be released to that show the depravity of what happened on saturday. it is hardening people in israel who are calling for the movement to wipe out hamas in gaza. i have to tell you, with each passing day, generally speaking, the more people i speak to want this to be done and done for good. the strategic question, of course, is how does that happen? there are many times that his real has tried to get rid of hamas or deal with these kinds of challenges. and it hasn't worked in the past, staff. >> i know you also talk to family members of some hostages, and these days must be excruciating as they're waiting in silence. what do they tell you? >> well, i spoke to the son of a 74 year old woman from winnipeg. her name is vivian silver. she has spent her adult life on this kibbutz next to the gaza strip, but she was a piece activist. she was a woman who interacted with palestinian women, tried to come to reconciliation. and pieces sometimes abstract in this part of the world. she actually talked about it as reconciliation. the other thing she did is in gaza, there is difficulty and getting advanced medical treatment, especially for cancer. because i can't get the radiation equipment, it's the kind of thing that can be used for weaponry. you have to leave gaza, which is fairly complicated process, and come into israel for cancer treatment. she's the one -- to try to take you for the treatment. she got taken. that family has not been told by the government that she is officially one of the hostages. they don't have complete evidence that she's been taken. i asked kherson about it. >> have you heard anything about your mother? >> not from the authorities. not so ever. but, only yesterday after four days, my father-in-law was able to get inside her house. we have strong assumptions that she is being held in gaza. she was obsessed with piece, you know. violence was always wrong in her mind, so she would say, now, even though our communities are wiped out, all my friends lost. i lost my friends, or they lost their parents, she would say we don't need more dead babies. we need to stop the violence now. vengeance it is not a strategy. we need to negotiate and we need to get the captives out. that's what i'm sane. i call on everybody, theto put pressure on both sides to negotiate and to get the captives out. >> stephanie, can you imagine that? his mother has been taken hostage, he believes. he hopes she's been taken hostage. he hopes that he's not going to get a call saying that she found in her body. and that's her his take on it. it's very hard. the degree of emotion that that man and the family of so of them. is impossible to comprehend. >> waiting in silence. they don't even know what to pray for. ali, thank you so much. stay safe where you are. let's bring in our lead off panel this evening. retired four star u.s. army general, barry mccaffrey, joins us. i desecrated combat veteran of vietnam and former battlefield commander in the gulf, jeremy bash is here. former chief of staff at the cia and the pentagon, general, can you give us a reality check here? a ground invasion in gaza as well as how does one even think about hostage rescue? what is the israeli military facing? >> it's a devastating situation, obviously. there are probably some 30,000 hamas fighters ensconced in the middle of a giant urban area of 2. 3 million civilians. they've got to go in on the ground and the armored forces, special forces. they've got to dominate the streets and then they have to go underground with tunnel rats and try and recover their hostages. it's unlikely that that's going to work very well. it will obviously be devastating consequences for the civilians. although the idf will make every effort to target the enemy force and not collateral damage the civilian communities. i don't know any other way to go about this. it's impossible to believe. stephanie, can you imagine if we had lost 30,000 murdered by hamas, what would we be doing? i think the israelis have got to go in and try and exterminate hamas. they'll stay as long as they have to, and they're going to suffer some considerable casualties in the process, i'm sure. >> jeremy, how do you see the calculus for israeli military leaders right now? >> i largely agree with general mccaffrey. i think the idea of his left with worse options and worse options. but of course, their number one responsibility is to protect the civilian population of israel and to protect the security of israel. and right now, israel continues to be under fire. they continue to be under fire from rocket artillery and mortar positions operated by hamas. as long as those hamas terrorists are able to operate with impunity and rain fire down on the israeli population, israel has no choice but to go and try to protect their own civilians. so some people in the media are calling this vengeance, retaliation, it's neither of those things. it's strictly self-defense. it's the very same thing we would do if somebody wore on our border, let's say, in mexico, raining down artillery and mortar pieces in texas. we would absolutely go in and try and take out those terrorist hideouts. now, the civilian populations are going to have to be on the move. they're going to have to get out of harm's way. the israelis are shocking to the u. n., they're talking to the egyptians, they're talking to the qataris. secretary blinken is in the region. nobody wants to see civilian loss of life. but hamas are the ones to blame for this because they use the civilians as human shields. >> general, on a scale of 1 to 10, how complicated is this whole situation for israel? >> it's a ten. unfortunately, so far, that magnificent secretary of state blinken has managed to achieve is to keep the rest of the region out of the war. obviously, in my mind, the iranians were 100% involved in this whole effort. now just funding, but probably also training, and may well have organized the operational security that made this attack so devastating. hezbollah, maybe 100,000 fighters, probably 120,000 rockets, now menacing israel from the north. and obviously we have to take into account, in addition, the jordanian army moved up in a frontier earlier today. and the syrian army has also, looking at being engaged in this war. so, we've got to try and prevent wiping of the war, step number one. but we are going to have to stand behind the idf as they go in there and try to exterminate how moss. i do not believe the israelis will ever be able to negotiate with how moss. they need a long term strategy, i would argue, of engaging the palestinian people in a positive way, a ten-year effort that hamas needs to be destroyed. >> israel has one of the most sophisticated intelligence operations in the world. jeremy, how could this have happened? >> i think this appears to have been a systemic failure on multiple fronts. not only a failure of intelligence collection, but probably also analysis, and probably also warning, tactical and strategic warning. quick reaction, force posture. there's a concentration of idf forces on one military base. there were breakdowns in coastal defense and air defense and uncivil defense. so, i think when the history of this is written, we are going to see a comprehensive, systemic failure. the other point i want to make is i think the point that general mccaffrey was echoing, which is that this was a highly trained force. this was not -- the hamas terrorists, they want some ragtag bunch joking jumping on the back of motorcycles with ak-47s. they had flak jackets, they had technology with him. bedrooms they were able to take out cameras with. -- they operated silently. they clearly trained a very long time for this mission, and they clearly got some training beyond the leadership of hamas. so, i think this investigation is going to have to also reveal who is behind us this? was this done by the irgc? with this done by the quds force -- 1200 civilians and soldiers, operated this. this was not just some merry band of -- on the move? >> general, do you agree? >> absolutely. people talk about what was hasse's objective. from a political viewpoint, it was a disaster. they are going to destroy a good bit of their own gaza infrastructure, what is their. they have already lost probably more than 1000 killed in action inside israel, never mind the in suing ground invasion of the populated areas. it was simply an expression of sheer rage, of murderous rage. the israelis will not forget this for 1000 years, though, the people now have to find some way to defend their interests. and the option, as jeremy bash said -- there was intra units going into an area of combat, they are going to lose 30, 50% casualties during the fighting. but i think there won't be an endgame, an exit strategy, until the israelis are convinced it will not happen again. >> wage is exactly why people stateside are scared tonight. jeremy, a former hamas leader has called for a day of anger tomorrow. and we have got cities around the u.s. bracing themselves. what do you think we are in for? >> yeah, it's hard to know what to make of this. because, on some level, you don't want to just heed anybody who is just spouting off on social media about threats to jewish individuals and institutions. that said, there are rising antisemitism, threats against jewish schools in -- but tomorrow night is the sabbath. i expect the synagogue pews to be filled with people not just praying but also expressing solidarity for israel. i think if we all stay home because someone is on social media saying they are going to kill all the jews -- i don't think any one in our country want that to happen. >> jeremy bash, and general mccaffrey, thank you both very much. very serious, important conversation tonight. when we come bac new reporting on the music festival festival where hamas terrorists massacred over 250 people. plus -- steve scalise is officially out of the speaker race. we will ask peter baker how it will end. underway on a thursday night. why didn't they stop this? what do you tell those families? >> i tell them, it's the responsibility of the army. it's the responsibility of the army, for the intelligence. it is our responsibility to guard the people of israel. we failed on saturday. it is our responsibility. but now we are fighting. >> just think, some of those concert goers thought the paragliders were part of the show. they were terrorists coming to hunt them down. yaakov katz, joins us now, fellow at the nieman foundation a former editor of "the jerusalem post". his daughter is a member of the idf, and she is stationed in the south of israel. yaakov katz, i can unimagined a week you are having. i want to start ask off by asking you about your daughter. -- how is she doing? >> thank, you stephanie. she is in one of the cities that was attacked just last saturday with those hamas infiltrators and terrorists. she's down there with her unit and she's in the middle of idf officers training. but like everything in the military today, she was on her way to becoming an idf officer. that's all changed. now, they took those cadets, give them some more combat training over the past few days, and set them down with full battle gear to these cities another have taken up security positions, patrolling, doing whatever they can to help the civilians. that's what she has been doing. >> you are so relaxed and composed. how scared are you for her safety? for what she is in for? >> you know, look. last night, for example, i got a push notification that there was a fear or concern of a terrorist infiltration right near that city. to tell you that i was not scared -- of course i was. but i also recognize that this is what israel needs to do right now. this is what the israeli military needs to do right now. i am not unique that i have my daughter, i have a brother up north of the lebanese border. i have three nephews who are in significant elite combat units were preparing to go into the gaza strip with that force. but my story is like every other israeli story. we are a country of not a lot of people. we are a country of people who served in the military. and when called upon to defend our country, as we need to after that abhorrent, unimaginable massacre last week, this is the moment that we are in. and unfortunately, we still have to fight for our survival. >> i am so taken by your strength right now. we spoke about this in the last segment. you are just talking about an elite military unit. when i think of elite, it is elite intelligence capabilities. that is what israel is known for. how do you think this happened? >> look, stephanie, this was a strategic failure on levels that we still do not understand. and it will have to be a commission of inquiry. they will have to be a day of reckoning for israel that will have to come after this war. and people have to be held accountable. but i think that what happened, it was a two layer, a double layered failure. on the one hand, hamas put israel to sleep. hamas was telling israel we do not want to conflict, we want economic incentives. we are -- not looking for a larger scale confrontation. yes, we will have an occasional cycle of violence on the ground that will last today a day, two or three. and israel -- they also normalized coming close to the border. every weekend, the last couple of weeks, they would hold protests. so, israel, that used to -- people close to the border where they should not have been. and the second layer was the planning of this operation, which took a long time. thousands of hamas terrorists involved. so, how could they have done it without israel knowing? the basic bottom line is what they did was, they divided. they compartmentalize. only a handful of people must have known what was happening. and the second part was they did not use any of these. there was no electronic communication. israel, since it pulled out of gaza, stephanie, in 2005, it doesn't have boots on the ground in gaza. it doesn't have a lot of human assets, human agents. what it relies on's electronics eavesdropping, signal intelligence. and the moment that they do not use that it is going to be very hard to pick up on what is happening. >> the israeli military, as we all know, is preparing for this potential ground invasion in gaza. what do people in israel think about this? what happened here? he wanted the job to go. >> yeah, he still wants a job, he just recognize that he's not going to get there, and one of the republican congressman went to -- today telling one of my colleagues i have a 2% chance that they would get a speaker that was probably overstating it. in this case, obviously, they did not get one a day and it's very hard to see other get one tomorrow. jim jordan will continue to run. but it is hard to see if he can get to the 270 that votes that they need on the floor as well. now, maybe you can pull it together. but right now this is a caucus, a conference, as you saw, indeed view you just play, that is in disarray. it is in chaos. it does not know what it once or how to govern. and i think that it is a remarkable moment in the history of washington. >> okay. but let's talk about the governing on doing their day job. because until republicans agree on a speaker, what are they doing all day? right? we have got aid to israel to worry about. we've got a potential shutdown happening. where are we going? >> well, without a speaker of the house, it cannot do any business on the floor. and until they get this resolved that means things like this government shutdown come looming pretty closely, pretty quickly. that means that there is no new aid for ukraine. that means there is no new aid for israel. it means there is no new warning for the border which a lot of republicans would like, to pass. and there is basically a complete impasse at this point. now, they can act pretty quickly if they want to, once they get things together. but they have not shown the evidence that they are capable of doing at that at this point. and i think that is what worries a lot of people on the white house and in capitol hill, and in foreign capitals that are watching this with, i think, a certain degree of concern. but what it says about american leadership on the world stage right now. >> what is the white house saying about this? >> they are keeping out of the distance, of course. they want nothing to do at this stage. they say it is congress's business to take care of, as karine jean-pierre said yesterday, it's not our chaos to fix. if the republicans, as a matter of sheer politics, obviously. the democrats attitude is basically, you know, the old saying don't get in the way if your enemy is busy shooting himself in the foot. but you also have to matter as a matter of getting things done for the country -- this chaos and what it means for the middle east for right now, they could even pass a symbolic bipartisan resolution soliciting that is what israel in this time of crisis. they cannot even do the bare minimum at this point. so, i think the frustration is pretty high on both sides of the aisle. >> let's talk about israel. because secretary of state antony blinken is there. earlier today he sat down with my colleague lester holt. i want to share a bit of their conversation. >> what we have seen here is something, to most of us, that is almost unimaginable. i think there is both an absolute revulsion at what we have seen and also a determination to stand strongly against. so, we stand with israel. it has not only a right but i think an obligation to take the steps necessary to defend itself. and also, to ensure to the best of its ability that this cannot happen again. >> you ever discuss any red lines with prime minister netanyahu? >> we are talking to them about their plans, how they intend to proceed. but i'm not going to get into any operational details, and again, we are determined to support them. >> what sticks out to you about his visit today? what is your reaction? >> well, a couple of things. first of all, when he landed, there one of the first things he did was say that he was there as a proud jew. he's a jewish secretary of state. -- personal blow for him. i was in the state dining room earlier this week in the white house when the secretary stood behind president biden when president biden was making that very angry speech about what had happened, very outraged speech. and you can see it on antony blinken's face. his face was very grim. his lips were pursed, he was very, i, think affected by this. i think you saw that today again in israel when he landed there. so, it is a personal thing for him as it is for a lot of americans. and i think that -- i think it comes of policy, in terms of going forward, leicester asked some really important questions that the secretary tried to jack, which is, okay, we stand with israel. but what does that mean in terms of how far israel should go at this point? because a lot of palestinian civilians are now facing a lot of hardship, a lot of danger. and they did not do anything. they are not part of hamas. where is the line that israel should draw on this? and the united states, under the president right now does not want to draw the lines of public. he wants to simply stick with the line, we have israel's back, period, full stop. >> let's talk about the president. because you mentioned that speech he gave earlier this week. a very powerful speech, condemning terrorism with a lot of folks on the middle east. but you also have new reporting on the other things that the president is focused on this week, because he is actually getting a lot done domestically. >> yeah. i think, it's interesting. he had an event on wednesday, yesterday, on junk fees, combatting those sort of hidden charges that have a lot of companies put on consumers. he had a meeting today with corporate executives talking about biden economics. he had that speech in philadelphia tomorrow talking about job creation and the green energy climate. and i think he understands the lessons of history in the lessons of history are that presidents spend a lot of time and a lot of focus on international affairs. but when it comes to winning a second term, which we would like to do next year, americans really care about what you are doing for them at home. but what their pocketbook issues are -- and he is trying to address those at the time when his poll numbers are not very good on the economy. so i think it was a show that he is not going to forget what americans are concerned about even as he has to manage this war in the middle east and an ongoing war in ukraine. >> peter, thank you so much for joining me tonight. i appreciate it. when we come, back the backlash. some elite colleges are facing over accusations of not speaking out forcefully enough against antisemitism. some are saying these elite schools are nothing short of awful. when "the 11th hour" continues. you deserve better than that. i'm hungry, i'm in a hurry, i don't have time to make anything healthy. you could if you had a blendjet. blendjet? why do you think there are so many young people conflating this or, for some insane reason, supporting a known terror group? >> obviously, there is no great answer for that. i have -- i can't tell you. i will tell you, though, that as long as it is happening on college campuses, it does not help when they are our guests invited onto network newscasts. i know not yours. but cable newscasts -- just earlier today, on your network, giving voice to someone who comes on and describes hamas as a nonviolent resistance, as a -- political party -- saying they are being portrayed as fanatical terrorists, when obviously, they are not, that doesn't help either. they are fanatical terrorists. committed heinous crimes. -- you have done such a good job giving voice, stephanie, two israeli families who have lost loved ones, whose loved ones who are missing, who are paying every month for them to return. families who have multiple generations signing up to be reserved to defend their country to take on these while terrorists and make sure that gaza no longer serves as the terror base from which these kinds of awful, brutal attacks are launched. it is important for everyone to recognize that this is not a time for either or, either israel or hamas. this is a time for everyone to stand on the side of what is, right on the side of humanity, and to stand firmly against terrorism. there is no good reason, zero, for anyone to support that. and in fact what is really frustrating is that hamas, the suggestion is that this is somehow about peace. hamas does not care about peace. they care about war. they are charter says that they exist to make war, to get rid of israel, to slaughter jews. they take the poor palestinians in gaza and put them in harm's way intentionally because they think the deaths of palestinians will help their cause. it is a sick terror group that nobody should support. that is why everyone who is so concerned about universities, they are seeing student groups that support this horrific terror. >> let's talk about what is happening tomorrow. a former hamas leader called for a day of anger. how worried are you about that? >> of course, of course we are worried. the fact that today on over 20 college campuses around the country, as i said, we saw these kinds of protests in support of hamas, in support of terrorists. and they did so using all of the language that terrorists use, all of the hamas language that is being used as hamas leaders talk about tomorrow, and what they are calling for. look, the jewish community will be vigilant. fortunately, law enforcement is monitoring the situation very carefully. the government is committed, law enforcement is committed, decent people around the country, which is the overwhelming majority of us, are committed to making sure that there is safety in this country and safety for the jewish community, and safety overall. because remember, hamas doesn't -- when they talk about the kinds of actions they are taking, it puts the community, not just the jewish community, but the broader community at risk. and so, we are all working together. we are making sure that we are taking it seriously and making sure that the community is going to stay safe. but it's awful, for 2023, the combination of groups who are supporting terrorists in america and outside america making threats leads to some synagogues across the country considering whether or not they can open for weekly shabbat services. that is an awful, awful statement. that's why we all need to continue to come together and support one another and support from the broader community, for the jewish community has never been more important than it is at this moment. >> and a reminder, as you head into the weekend, if someone says to you, this is about failed israeli policies, you can talk about failed israeli policies in a week, in two weeks, in three weeks. hamas has had in their charter for decades that it is a goal to eradicate jews. please remember that. >> 35 years. 35 years in writing, that is why they exist. how can anybody a support?
