today. more than 1,000 have died. all signs point to a ground invasion from israel becoming imminent. president biden announcing the american death toll has risen to 14 and confirming that americans are among the hostages. >> as president, i have no higher priority than the safety of americans being held hostage around the world. secretary austin today reinforcing the president's message. >> the united states continues to stand firm with israel and the israeli people. we will continue to ensure that israel has what it needs to keep itself and its citizens safe. ♪♪ good day, everyone. i'm andrea mitchell in washington. president biden spoke by phone with israel's prime minister netanyahu this morning again and will meet with jewish american community leaders at the white house this afternoon after promising to stand by israel following the vicious hamas terror attack. the first resupply of u.s. weapons did arrive overnight. pentagon officials are confirming the "uss gerald ford" led by an aircraft carrier the newest in the fleet, has arrived in the eastern mediterranean with another departing on a pre-scheduled deployment later this week. there's an american team of technical experts in hostage recovery heading to the country to assist in any future operations. white house homeland security advisor elizabeth randall saying the administration is considering sending up commercial charter flights to get americans who want out of the country. in gaza, there'sitarian crisis. hundreds of israeli tanks and armored vehicles are amassing near the gaza border ahead of an expected major ground offensive. president biden is about to speak in the rose garden. let's go there. >> this morning and i will speak about this this afternoon during my meeting with the jewish american leaders. this attack has brought to the surface a painful memory and scars left by genocide against the jewish people. this moment we have to be crystal clear, there's no justification for terrorism. no excuse. the type of terrorism exhibited here is beyond the pale. as i said yesterday, my commitment to israel's security and safety of the jewish people is unshakable. the united states has israel's back. we're going to be working on this all through the day and beyond. again, i apologize for keeping you waiting. thank you, becky, for that introduction. for sharing your story. that's familiar to so many families. this gets down to a basic problem, a basic circumstance. >> joining me now is john kirby. john, i want to start by playing more of the strong statements that we heard from the president yesterday. i'm sorry, we will get that keyed up in a second. he said that there's no way to describe the evil. he said we stand with israel. today, benjamin netanyahu has done something that was previously unthinkable. he reached out to the former defense minister, former opponent, to form a wartime coalition government. will this help add needed expertise to the israeli military? >> i mean, obviously, he has a long history in the israeli defense forces and in government as a civilian leader. i think i will let prime minister netanyahu speak to his plans for a unity government. that's an internal issue for them. we want to make sure that they know that the united states will support and will be maintaitain and you heard the president talk about that. whatever government forms in israel, we want that government and the leaders in the government to know that the united states will be with them. >> there's reporting the president did, in their conversations -- he has had many conversations with the prime minister -- urge to be aware of the risks involved in civilian deaths in gaza. you have a densely populated, very small area. >> yep. >> what are your concerns about that? >> nobody wants to see any more innocent life taken. it's been deadly enough. it's incredible the scope of the butchery there. nobody wants to see more innocent lives lost or hurt or family grieving and suffering. hamas does not speak for the palestinian people. they are putting the palestinian people in gaza at greater risk by setting up their command centers in hospitals and schools. you heard the president talk about this yesterday. one of the great things about this relationship with israel is we have a lot of shared interests, respect for life, the rule of law and the law of war. we know we can rely on that respect going forward. >> on the charter, lizabeth randall said there was a plan afoot to get commercial charters, to have them add flights for americans in israel, american citizens, maybe students and others, there are many there, who may want to leave given the war could spread. what is the progress on that? >> i don't want to get ahead of where we are in the decision making process. we are obviously, as you would expect, in touch with american citizens in israel making sure we have a sense of how many want to go and when they might want to go and looking at and examining options to facilitate that travel out of israel. there are some commercial carriers flying out of the airport. there are viral land routes available. we understand that that may not suit everybody. we are working on this very hard. i think we will have more to say about that in coming days. >> would this be american citizens and those with dual citizenship? >> a dual national is an american in our book. it's an american in our book. we don't make that distinction. >> what are your concerns about the casualties in gaza? obviously, there are a lot of innocent palestinians, not connected to the hamas regime, who have in fact been exploited in the past and on a daily basis by the hamas government. >> that's a strong point. probably i didn't make it well enough in my last answer. hamas doesn't represent the aspirations of the palestinian people. hamas is deliberately placing them at greater risk by sheltering themselves in hospitals and residences and schools. we call on hamas to stop this violence, release the hostages and immediately stop these attacks. you are right, they are placing the palestinian people at greater risk. >> are you hoping some of the governments like egypt and qatar, who have relationships with hamas, can influence hamas to release the hostages, israelis and americans? >> we obviously call on the immediate release. short of that happening, what i can tell you is that we're going to stay in touch with the families. the families have been an incredible source of information in terms of telling us what they know about when their loved ones might have been abducted and taken away and where and that kind of thing. that's been a terrific line of communication. we will keep that open. keep the lines open with israeli officials. we offered expertise, hostage recovery expertise coming from federal law enforcement, u.s. military, intel community. the israelis have a sophisticated hostage recovery capability. we will stay lashed up with them. there's no greater priority for president biden than the safety and security of american citizens overseas, particularly those who have been detained or held hostage. we will do everything we can, everything possible to get them back with their families where they belong. >> can you clarify when the president talked about a hostage special operations unit or rescue teams, is this sending in more expertise, or are we talking about the people who are already in the embassy on a regular basis? >> it's the latter. there's a small cell, liaison cell of u.s. special operations troops that are perpetually in israel, particularly in this case were there for exercises we were planning to do. they are still there. they do have some of the expertise that i talked about, that military expertise. they are available, as the secretary of defense said, available to provide that support should the israelis want to avail themselves of it. >> let me ask you about iran. we have been reporting that there is no credible evidence, as you have said, as other officials in government have said, no credible evidence that iran specifically planned and ordered this strike. that doesn't mean that iran hasn't been arming, training, you know, hamas for decades. as we have reported, there would be no hamas without iran. is there anything new on that front? is tehran sending you any signals specifically through third parties or otherwise that they were not involved in this? >> no, there's no updates to that situation. i think obviously as we have been saying for the last couple of days, we're going to keep picking apart at the intelligence that's out there. we're going to keep sifting through the streams that we know we have available to us. as you and i are speaking today, we haven't seen anything that shows specific support to these attacks. there's a degree of complicity. iran has supported hamas for so many years, resourcing, funding, capabilities, it's all there. hamas wouldn't be without the support that they get from iran. but we just haven't found anything that tells us that the iranians knew of this specific planning, were involved in this planning, resourced it or helped in any tangible way. >> the ayatollah, the supreme leader in iran, said yesterday that those who say that they were involved are wrong. then he went on to say, i kiss the hands of those who ordered the strike. i don't have the exact quote. he praised the strike. >> yeah, look, that's obviously reprehensible and repugnant. but it's to be expected coming from the supreme leader. given their support for terrorist networks in the region, including hezbollah. it's not like we were shocked to hear the supreme leader come out and say that. it's just another example of the malintent of iran in the region and the degree to which they are willing to go to spread violence and terrorism and fear and destabilize the region. all the more reason why it's important for us to continue our efforts in the middle east. today, we are focused squarely on supporting israel from a military perecve in terms of the support they need. obviously, we haven't forgotten how important it is to move -- continue to move forwards normalization between israel and saudi arabia, to continue to make sure that our military presence in the gulf and in the region is sufficient to the threat that iran poses, to continue to hold iran accountable economically for the support to russia, their support to terrorist networks, to interrupt shipping in the gulf. we are absolutely -- those comments are just all the more proof and underscore how important it is to hold iran countable and keep pressure on them. >> there's a fear of hezbollah from the north. they are warning israelis in the north to shelter in place, to be careful, to protect themselves. what do we know about that? >> yeah. i have seen those reports almost the same time you did. i can't independently verify they are accurate. i have no reason to dispute them. we have seen rocket fire coming from southern lebanon by hezbollah into northern israel. we are watching this with great concern. we don't want to see this conflict widen or expand. we don't believe it's in the idf's interest to be a second front they have to fight and defend against as they try to prosecute operations against hamas. we are watching this closely. it's worrisome. >> just yesterday admiral stavridis said if hezbollah fires missiles from the north and opens a second front that, quote, the jets will whistle off the deck of the "uss gerald ford." putting us in the middle of the action. what's your reaction? >> i won't speak for potential military operations, future military operations. i don't think that would be wise to do. we moved that carrier strike group primarily as a deterrent to send a strong signal. you heard the president say, we don't want any group, any organization, any nation state try to take advantage of the situation in israel and perpetuate their hostility by widening this conflict. we put that strike group there for a deterrent purpose. i probably should leave it right there. >> finally, prime minister netanyahu said this is a time to decapitate hamas, to remove hamas. he is joined by other members of the previous opposition, united behind saying enough is enough, we cannot go through this every few years and nothing like this has ever happened from hamas before. tom freedman was warning today, are they thinking through -- are we thinking through what happens the day after the day after? in other words, we don't want to repeat the mistakes made in iraq where we removed the army and what followed was ten years of civil war. >> look, we all in the national security world, we have to think about the day after the day after. every decision you make has repercussions. every decision you don't make, inaction, has consequences you have to think about. i don't think the israeli people can be blamed. i think they can be forgiven for wanting to decapitate hamas. think about how we felt about al qaeda after 9/11. this is just as significant to the israeli people as our 9/11. we wanted to decapitate al qaeda. we got bin laden. you can't blame the israeli people for wanting to make sure that they don't have to face this kind of a threat from that particular terrorist group in the future. >> john kirby, i know it's a very busy day. a lot of moving parts. thank you so much for being with us today. >> good to be with you. the full house gathered this morning for a classified briefing on israel. the chamber is paralyzed until republicans elect a speaker. those efforts are now underway. joining us, the chair and vice chair of the house intelligence committee, mike turner and jim himes. first of all, it's wonderful to see a bipartisan interview. it doesn't always happen. your committee is unusual. we are grateful for that. mr. chairman, can you tell us what you have learned that you can disclose about the situation in the north where there's now an alert from the idf and concerns that the hezbollah could open a second front from lebanon? >> sure. you are correct on the aspect of bipartisanship. not only do we work together, jim and i on a bipartisan basis, there's overwhelming bipartisan support for israel in congress. that was evident today as we had the briefing. members voicing their support for israel. the concern everyone has is to what extent was iran directly involved? the thing that we should never lose perspective of is hamas is a franchise of iran. they fund them. they provide them rockets. they provide them munitions. they train them. the question really is perfunctory as to whether they directly were participating. we know that they are an arm of iran. this does reflect on iran's involvement and its affect against israel. >> the president confirmed, congressman himes, that there are american citizens among the hostages. what do we know about how many? 20 americans were reportedly missing. do you know how many are actually being held, or could this be more people tragically have been killed? >> yeah, of course, that's first and foremost on a lot of people's minds. there's multiple objectives. number one, aid has begun to arrive to make sure we are doing all we can to support the israelis in defending themselves against this attack. behind that, of course, is making sure we know where, how many, and how we might free the american hostages who are undoubtedly inside gaza right now. we don't have a great number. that number is likely to be a dozen, two dozen, maybe more. we heard in the briefing today that not only are people thinking about it but assets are being moved into place to do the very, very hard work of both developing contingencies to free the hostages or there are obviously allies of ours or friends of ours like the turks, like qatar, who maintain a dialogue with hamas that we will be using to make it clear we expect the hostages not to be harmed. >> have you heard, chairman turner, any progress on that front? any communications from qatar, from egypt to try to pressure hamas to release the americans and the israelis? >> the discussions are ongoing. i hope with the administration is being successful. this is a dire situation. hamas knew exactly what it was doing. this was well planned out. these are not unintended consequences. these are intended consequences. as we see the brutality and murderousness and atrocities of what's occurred, that, too, reflects both what hamas' intention is, their hatred for the israeli people, but also how we as the united states need to have the resolve of supporting israel against this clear evil. >> mr. chairman, do you think there's prospect for a rescue operation in that context where we see the tanks now amassing at the gaza border and a ground invasion seems imminent? >> it's a complicated environment. i know our military is working very, very closely with the israelis at this point on trying to assess what is known and where these individuals might be held. it's certainly going to be a difficult environment going forward. >> have you heard anything more about this alert from the idf about what's happening in hezbollah -- or from hezbollah in the north, congressman himes? >> well, obviously, as the chairman alluded, all eyes are on iran. hezbollah is a client state of the iranian regime, as people know. we have moved significant naval assets into the region, air assets to send the signal it's not a conflict anybody should consider widening. it's not just the iranians and hezbollah, whether syrians or elements in the west bank, the administration and all of us are working very hard to make sure we have seen the worst of this and that it doesn't get expanded into a conflict in the north or this is a moment taken advantage of by other bad actors in the region because they believe israel is vulnerable. our presence there, everything we are doing to make sure assets are there, is designed to make sure that other bad actors don't seek to take advantage of this moment. >> if that were to happen, if there were a major assault from the north, would the f-35s from "gerald ford" take off? would we get involved from the air? >> we have a pledge and agreement with israel. it's known in the region of our intent to support israel if they should come under significant attack. certainly, i think everyone in the region needs to take that into consideration. i think hopefully, that will have a deescalating affect on the region. >> congressman himes, would there be any congressional opposition? >> i don't think so. i'm very happy to say that as the chairman said, the feeling in the room this morning where we had most of the house of representatives was unanimous around support for israel, about being appalled by the brutal loss of life that hamas visited upon the israeli people and, obviously, some concern. the israelis have the right of self-defense. they are going to rightly make sure that they don't face this threat from hamas ever again. as the chairman pointed out, in gaza, you have 2 million people in very close quarters. that's going to be an excruciatingly difficult operation. just as we decry the loss of innocent israeli life, we hope that there is no or minimal loss of palestinian life. people sometimes forget in these moments that the palestinians are also victims of this murderous terrorist group hamas. again, all of our efforts are designed right now to secure the state of israel and to hope that we have really seen the worst of this conflict. >> very briefly, i know you have to go vote, chairman turner, you were part of the republican conference meeting today. apparently, they tabled a motion and are proceeding towards a simple majority. does that help steve scalise? where do you see this? are we closer to having a speaker? >> i don't think it helps either candidate. i think the real issue is trying to get the work of the republican caucus done while we are sitting together behind closed doors before we are once again down on the house floor. efforts are underway to accomplish that. i hope we are successful today. >> you are backing? >> jim jordan. my fellow ohioan. we have our fingered crossed for jim. he is fighting hard. he has the endorsement of trump. >> thank you so much. thank you both. i know you have to run. >> thank you. the israeli military has video of some of the air strikes inside gaza on what the idf says are hamas targets. a look at the military buildup coming next. first, this from the streets of ashkelon, not far from gaza. residents search for cover while rockets fall nearby. the fighting continuing. that's next on "andrea mitchell reports." you are watching msnbc. hi, i'm jason and i've lost 202 pounds on golo. so the first time i ever seen a golo advertisement, i said, "yeah, whatever. there's no way this works like this." and threw it to the side. a couple weeks later, i seen it again after getting not so pleasant news from my physician. i was 424 pounds, and my doctor was recommending weight loss surgery. to avoid the surgery, i had to make a change. so i decided to go with golo and it's changed my life. when i first started golo and taking release, my cravings, they went away. and i was so surprised. you feel that your body is working and functioning the way it should be and you feel energized. golo has improved my life in so many ways. i'm able to stand and actually make dinner. i'm able to clean my house. i'm able to do just simple tasks that a lot of people call simple, but when you're extremely heavy they're not so simple. golo is real and when you take release and follow the plan, it works. we have breaking news from israel. tragically, we are learning from the state department, 22 americans have been killed in the israeli gaza conflict. just yesterday, it was only 14. there were so many people missing. joining us now, matt bradley in lebanon. matt, we were hearing warnings from the idf, the israeli defense force, to residents in northern israel of an intrusion in the air and that they should stay -- shelter in place. >> reporter: yeah. we just saw just over my right shoulder right here, there were three or four flares that we saw gradually descending over the border between lebanon and -- we shot video. they are no longer there. they are normally used to illuminate some kind of event on the ground. that is distinct from the style of fighting that we have been hearing and seeing literally seeing over my left shoulder and that border between israel and lebanon that's been characterized by drones, by air strikes on the part of the israelis, guided missiles launched by both sides. there have been infiltrators, usually the israeli term. these have been palestinian islamic jihad fighters who crossed the border from here in lebanon into israel. two of them were killed. several hamas -- excuse me, hezbollah fighters, four of them, have been killed so far. we attended the funeral just yesterday of two of them. we heard a lot of them describing how hezbollah was determined to defeat the zionist enemy. this is threatening language. we had more of that today in a statement from hezbollah where they basically condemned the speech, the emotional speech that president joe biden delivered where he pledged support for israel. the comments, the statement said that hezbollah and lebanon are not afraid of the naval aspects in the eastern mediterranean sea. they said, we heard this before, that lebanon and hezbollah were determined to fight against israel and that they had martyrs and they were willing to sacrifice to do that. what they didn't say was whether hezbollah would or would not enter the fight. our understanding based on conversations with people affiliated with hezbollah, we have not been able to get a direct interview with anybody who is part of hezbollah, they have said that they are going to be silent except for the official statements, one of which i'm quoting now, we haven't heard whether they have made a decision. we can take that on face value. they are deciding whether or not to enter the fight. they can be based on a couple of different factors. the number one factor is going to be what happens when israel eventually launches this muscular, ferocious invasion of gaza we can expect to happen in the coming days, maybe in the coming hours, we don't know. >> matt bradley, thank you so much. we will see you in the next hour of our special coverage. thanks so much for being up there in lebanon. joining us is admiral james stavridis. you told me yesterday that the "uss gerald ford" strike force is there to show deterrence but to restrain hezbollah in the north. you says if missiles start raining down on israel, we will see jets off the deck. how likely is this to happen? would that be in accordance with the security agreement between the u.s. and israel if it's a major invasion? >> the good news is, it would entirely be within the framework of our general alliance structure with israel. the additional good news is, i think it's a relatively low chance as things are structured this minute. they can change in the next hour, as you know. i think it's a relatively low chance that hezbollah starts pouring missiles south. the reason is, because "gerald ford" is parked right there. hezbollah is well aware of the fire power and capability of that carrier. if they had any doubt, there's a second one on the way, "uss eisenhower." i think president ford and president eisenhower would feel good to see their namesake carriers in position off the coast and ready to help defend a u.s. ally. i want to conclude by saying something in disagreement with the president of turkey, erdogan, who recently said that that carrier was there to massacre in gaza. that's absolutely not correct. the carrier is there specifically to show our solidarity with israel, to deter hezbollah. the target set, if there is one, will be hezbollah to the north. >> that is alarming, because, of course, erdogan, as the president of turkey, is one of the countries we were hoping that we would hope could be willing to pressure hamas to release our hostages, to stand down. as secretary blinken is about to depart on a trip to israel. >> indeed. frankly, at this moment, i think unfortunately, the chances of any kind of diplomacy, any kind of mediation, are extremely low because of the horrific nature of the acts that have occurred in the last two to three days. these hamas soldiers, as they categorize themselves, they are, of course, terrorists. they slaughtered children, beheading babies, attacking women, raping women. let's see how they fare when the israeli defense force enters gaza. it will be a very different scenario for hamas at that point. >> nbc's richard engel has been reporting he is seeing hundreds of tanks and other armored vehicles along the gaza border. they are clearly amassing for a ground invasion. what does that look like? >> it will be begin and it's occurring right now with the precision guided air strikes you see to take out hamas command and control, decapitate senior members of the regime. it will be followed by closer in fire from tanks and surface-to-surface missiles that will crash through barriers. they will be followed by shock troops. the elite of the israeli defense forces. all of that will move forward. flanking it will be special forces who will be targeting finding the hostages and doing everything they can to try to secure them and protect them. it will be a combined arms assault. i would suspect there will also be something coming from the sea. the israeli version of the navy seals are very good. you saw a number of gaza vessels destroyed yesterday. that opens the harbor and creates another avenue of attack for israel. these plans have been laid a long time. i think israel will execute them very well. they have their forces coming forward. as we heard president biden say yesterday, no one outside of israel should make the mistake of trying to broaden this conflict. that's why "gerald ford" is there. that's why "eisenhower" is joining. i'm confident this will stay contained to gaza. let's hope it does. that's a snapshot of what this assault will look like. >> admiral stavridis, thank you so much. appreciate it. now, there's a horrifying story about an elderly israeli couple. raf sanchez has details. >> reporter: we are at the home of an elderly israeli couple. they were held hostage for 20 hours by hamas gunmen. i want to show you the scene of devastation in here. you can see bullet holes all over the walls, against the stairs more gunfire. this is the truly extraordinary part of this story. this grandmother, she actually fed the men holding her hostage. you can see some of the cans of tuna here that she fed to them. she sang to them. the entire time, she was trying to buy time for israeli forces to gather. her son is a policeman. at some point, he came to the door to conduct negotiations. she sent him a secret signal. she put her hand over her face like this to signal there were five gunmen inside. i want to take you upstairs. i want to warn, it's graphic up here. as i said, the walls riddled with bullets. there's blood on the stairs. there's more blood as you go up. the couple were held hostage mainly up here on this upper floor. the group of gunmen were gathered here. you can actually see some of the food that she served to them. they were held over in this corner. all the while, israeli special forces outside were preparing to storm the building. they did eventually come bursting in through this window. they killed at least one of the terrorists here. i don't know if you can see this. these are family photographs. this looks like a picture of a little girl in a pool of blood. the israeli forces came bursting through this door, back out into the main room. the gunmen were here. david threw his body over his wife to shield her from the bullets. the police came storming in. they were able to save this couple. they were unharmed. this is one of the rare, rare moments of good news that israelis are trying to draw inspiration from right now. >> a remarkable story. thanks to raf sanchez for that. one hopeful sign of a hostage rescue. as our special coverage continues, for the thousands who do not know the fate of their loved ones, caught in the hamas attack, like one one from california, the pain of not knowing that makes it all the more unbearable. >> these two bodies are in the house. there are four missing. it's the mom, the 17-year-old girl and two little boys. missing means dead, murdered, or kidnapped and taken to the gaza strip. we have no idea. i wish for the g new iphone 15 pro! >> i think there are some back channel efforts. some of this has been in the press, that qatar, the government has offered to be an intermediary between hamas and the israeli government. and it's not clear how many americans there are. i spoke to our colleague, one of our colleagues in the region today, have they heard from qatari sources, there's really no progress at this point. i think they are not going to release these prisoners soon. you know, viewers have probably heard this before, but hamas, you know, captured a single israeli soldier several years ago. he was held for five years in gaza, the israeli military could not find him and carry out a rescue raid for five years. that's how hard it is to find a hostage in gaza, and he was eventually freed for a thousand palestinian prisoners. so it's a very grim situation. israel has always had a founding principle of never leaving anyone behind, always going and getting their soldiers back, getting their hostages back, but in this instance, president netanyahu has said their prime goal is to eliminate the hamas leadership once and for all, and that would be keirly a ground invasion, richard engel is reporting they see the amassing of tanks and other armored vehicles. >> it does put the hostages at risk. you had mentioned my own experience, i was held by the taliban many years ago for seven months. it's the kidnappers that are at fault. it's the kidnappers who have chosen to take these unarmed civilians and put them in harm's way. i want every hostage to be released, but if there is a ground invasion and the god forbid some of these captives die, it is the fault of the kidnappers. >> you were held by the taliban in 2008, i believe, as you say for seven months. you managed to escape through incredible courage and grit, but in the dense gaza city, in the tunnels, in the high-rises, wherever they might be, that would be difficult if not impossible. >> it will be. it's a much more difficult situation that these folks face that are being held in gaza. i just -- you know, you you spoke to the husband earlier in the program, i have a bias about kidnapping, but kidnapping is a uniquely cowardly crime. again, i blame the perpetrators. what's so cruel is in some way it's harder on the families. you saw that with the mother and the grandmother, you know, that lester interviewed as well. it's almost like your loved one catches cancer. these families think they can save the lives of their loved ones if they just say the right thing to benjamin netanyahu, they say the right thing to joe biden, and it's a cruel thing to do to these families because they don't control whether their loved one's going to survive or not. so it's painful to see this many people kidnapped. it's painful to see this many families put in this impossible situation. this could last a very long time, given the track record, i don't see a quick negotiation. i don't think it's the fault of, you know, u.n. or israeli -- i'm sorry, u.s. or israeli officials if there's no sudden, quick deal. this is going to be a protracted negotiation. >> and earlier this hour, we heard from the u.n. secretary general about the humanitarian toll in gaza by the siege cutting off electricity, water, you know, food, let's watch. >> u.n. staff are working around the clock to support the people of gaza and i deeply regret that some of my colleagues have already paid the ultimate price. crucial life saving supplies including fuel, food and water must be allowed into gaza. we need rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access now. >> i understand the military tactic here, but could it backfire? could it just inflame the region, further inflame the region against israel? >> i think that's what hamas wants. i think they wanted to get israel, you know, to launch a ground invasion of gaza for a while, they're hoping, you know, as you're talking about, hezbollah may attack from the north. hopefully, again, this -- i hope it doesn't spread, and i hope civilians don't suffer because, you know, most palestinians i believe don't support hamas. most palestinians in gaza are scared to death, but again, what hamas did was terrorism, killing 260 people, you know, at a concert, kidnapping more than 100 civilians, so it's a horrible situation, but you have sort of extremists acting in ways that put many innocent civilians in danger. >> absolutely, david rohde, thank you very much for being with us. appreciate it. >> thank you. and this is a live look at the gaza strip right now, relatively quiet and now dark. we have a lot more coming up during our second hour of special coverage including the latest on secretary blinken's planned trip to israel later today. and a senior adviser to prime minister benjamin netanyahu will be joining us to speak to the new wartime coalition government that has been created today. you're watching "andrea mitchell reports." stay with us, you're watching msnbc. ing msnbc. because there's never been a reported ransomware attack on a chromebook. now they're focused on learning knowing that their data is secure.
