larger, midsize, even smaller fishing boats that remain untouched. even to the right of your screens, there are other boats. and to the left. that are untouched. these two or three, kind of there where you see the plume of smoke, that's been the area that has been hit. and it's been hit consistently. and that's what we've been seeing for the better part of an hour now, as it is 6:01 p.m. in gaza. now, meanwhile, prime minister benjamin netanyahu has been saying that this is just the beginning. this video, from the last hour show the iron dome at work. intercepting rockets that were fired from gaza, over nbc's richard engel's position in southern israel. and now hundreds of thousands of israelis mobilized as the country rallies for war. raising questions about whether a ground invasion is imminent. plus, we have the desperate search for hostages. hamas, with a terrifying threat to execute hostages every time gaza civilians are hit without warning. and later, president biden set to deliver remarks in just about two hours on the terror attacks. what he plans to say to the world. ♪♪ we begin with the very latest on what's happening on the ground in the middle east. joining us now nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel in southern israel. he's on the phone, nbc news correspondent matt bradley, and richard, we've been speaking with you over the last hour, we've been really watching and witnessing by your side the most extraordinary images of missile after missile after missile being sent from the area there in gaza, into to where you are, over and over again. this iron dome, hitting them in arab. but some got through. >> reporter: some did get through. and we just left ashkelon to move to another area. the barrage seems to have stopped. or at least paused for now. so we're using that as an opportunity to change location. we -- there were some of the rockets that got through. we saw emergency response crews dealing with it. there are some images that have been captured showing fires on the streets in the port. and there are some casualties, but it was not what hamas has been promising. hamas was sending out text messages in hebrew to israelis telling people to evacuate the city, that ashkelon was going to be destroyed at 5:00, local time, on the dot. one hour ago. many rockets were launched. almost all of them were intercepted. and that's what we're seeing now. this, we've been talking about over and over again, this is not over. there's been another incident, another attempted infiltration into northern israel from lebanon. and i'm sure matt bradley can talk more about that. and there's still attempts in southern israel by the israeli army, ongoing efforts. with clear and search the communities along the border with gaza. and then, of course, there is this, for now, air campaign against the gaza strip. and we've spoken to many military analysts, generals, ex-generals, over the course of the last four days. i think they will all tell you, it is very difficult to achieve israel's military objectives by air strike alone. israel says it wants to get the regime change. destroy the regime, and find a replacement for it. but how is it going to destroy it by only bombing it from the air, when hamas still has plenty of rockets. there's another thing that we haven't said much is public opinion. we are talking about what it happening in israel. we are talking about the victims and the atrocities and the hostages. but if you watch channels, mostly they're focusing on the victims of gaza which are also in the hundreds. the civilians that are being killed in these strikes by hamas. >> and, richard, it's so important what you're mentioning, because the fact is that, you know, and we've said it over and over again, you know, gaza is one of the most densely populated areas on earth. more than 2 million people were crammed in there. with no way out, really. i mean, they can't go israel. >> reporter: no. >> out through egypt. and i'm thinking, richard, if israel decides, and, you know, the israeli prime minister is saying that the war against hamas is just beginning, if this next phase is one of a ground war in to gaza, the israelis were there before. but this was a different time. and certainly, it seems as though it would be of a -- such a difficult, intense nature, it's not fallujah, it's not even -- i mean, i'm thinking like the battle of leningrad. i mean, what would that be like? >> reporter: it would be an absolute nightmare. it's been a nightmare in the past when israeli rooms have troops have gone in. and it would be worse now. hamas has said it spent a year training for this operation. hamas, these people know what they're doing, they clearly have gotten better. ful they spent a year preparing for this assault, it's also logical to assume they would have spent time preparing for the consequences of it. so where israel has gone in the past, hamas booby traps, there are tunnels, there are land mines, and that's in years past before hamas had this level of sophistication. and this level of training. so if and when, if israeli troops go in, they will face a ground -- they will face a very tough fight. hamas will be dug in, ultimately. hamas, one would assume, will solution the conflict, with alarming force. but the people of gaza will suffer and huge consequences. they have -- they didn't vote in the hamas government. i've been to gaza, many, many times, there are many people there who don't support hamas. who feel totally oppressed by this notorious infamous government that they did not elect. hamas threw out the opposition, the political party. but the people who are there, i don't want to say they're hostages, but in many ways they're also hostages to this government of hamas. they can't leave, because israel, for reasons all too obvious in the last four days does not open the border. egypt doesn't open the border, so the people there, if you're born in gaza, you stay in gaza, you can't leave. and you are governed by hamas. which every few years attacks israel because it wants to destroy the fate of israel. it wants to achieve the leadership position in the arab world. for all of its different motivations and bring this kind of horrible reprisal onto the entire strip where 2 million people live in very poor and very densely populated areas. r. >> so important. and if you would richard, stay with us, but i want to go to matt who is there in lebanon. you were hearing explosions the last time we spoke. what's going on now? >> reporter: well, jose, we are still hearing explosions. and in fact, these are outgoing attacks by what we understand to be rockets. most likely fired by hezbollah. outgoing, very far in the distance over my left shoulder here. we've also seen streaks of smoke to indicate that this is outgoing. and we've also heard from security forces and from local media that the israelis are returning fire with artillery. so this is kind of ratcheting up. and hezbollah, just over the weekend, ago knowledged they have lost three of their fighters. now, we can say this is a major escalation, and it is, but the fact of the matter is this is a very choreographed situation. over the past decades we've seen this warfare, this style, between hezbollah and israel. it's choreographed. nobody seeping to be deviating even with the appalling violence going on where my colleague richard engel is at the moment. and not like 2006 where the israelis launched an attack that brought hezbollah to its knees. they don't want to see this escalate and hezbollah, and the entire nation of lebanon, honestly, you'll remember that explosion a couple years ago in beirut, this country is economically ravaged and nobody wants to see a massive war. despite the fact there are a lot of sympathy in lebanon for the palestinians. as i said before, jose, that could change at anytime, hezbollah like hamas is backed by iran. they could be getting input. they could be getting actual direction from iran, tehran, deciding what they're going to be doing. and we just heard from the ayatollah of iran coming out today and saying iran want behind this attack. right now on this border, we're not seeing quite yet an internationalization of the conflict. if we do, that would be a really big crisis, an even bigger crisis for the entire region. if we start bringing in other militant groups, hezbollah has more access to weapons, more access to power here in lebanon than even hamas does. so that would be a disaster for israel and the people of lebanon. jose. >> yeah, and i thank you for that, matt. richard, you know, it's an area you know so well, as does matt. but just the possibility and the fear of this expanding which, you know, hezbollah is different than hamas, in so many ways, including the fact that hezbollah has actually had essentially a working government in lebanon. in the past. i remember, boy, maybe 25 years ago, visiting lebanon, and you couldn't go from beirut to betadine or beirut without being stopped three, four times without hezbollah checkpoints. and, richard, your experience with syria, with the wagner group that has been supporting assad and his son's family there, this is a very dangerous group and this is a very wide area that could be, if it gets involved, really change a lot of things. richard. >> reporter: oh, hezbollah is a much more powerful organization than hamas. hamas runs what is effectively a very large penile colony in the gaza strip. and it rules it by force. hezbollah runs a country. they control the airports. they control international ports. they have access to the finance system. the leaders can travel freely in and out of the country. it is a very different -- different scenario. they're also far better equipped. they have tremendous military skills that they honed from years -- decades actually, fighting against the israeli military. with hezbollah entered into this conflict in a series way, we would be seeing a different kind of war. there would be ships -- american ships coming in to evacuate citizens from the region. we would see massive oil fluctuations. oil price fluctuations. it would be a different scale of conflict. it still could come. and what i think is a key factor, as i was talking to you about earlier, it's really public opinion. hamas launched this war under the name of pretending -- protecting the al aqua mosque in jerusalem. it's the third holiest site in all of islam. for muslims around the world, it's deeply sensitive. the israeli government has been allowing right-wing extremists to enter into the al aqsa mosque, with provocative action, giving them a great deal of latitude. hamas is claiming that its murderous kidnapping rampage, when it ripped old women and children from their homes and brought them over the border is being carried out in the name of al aqsa mosque to satisfy the muslim world. it's a narrative that does appeal to many. it's a narrative that i think deems traction. if the israelis go into the gaza strip. and suddenly, there are thousands, tens of thousands of palestinian casualties, the idea that hamas is defending islam could resonate. and that could trigger, i think, hezbollah to enter into conflict. if the arab world -- if the muslim world feels engagement. but as matt was saying, they don't really want to do this right now. the country is bankrupt. they've had a currency collapse. if hezbollah goes into this war, israel will respond and destroy the country. destroy the infrastructure. and it is very possible hezbollah would be blamed for that. but hezbollah would also be blamed if thousands of palestinians are being killed and they do nothing. >> richard engel and matt bradley, thank you both very much. i want to bring in ruby chen, he's in -- his son is missing, israeli defense force soldier. dual israeli american citizen itay chen. i thank you very much for being with us. i really appreciate it. i don't even know how you are able to be this extraordinarily strong. what is it that you and your family are doing? and i know that this -- your son's unknown is -- what do you want us to know? >> well, i was listening to richard talking before. all of that macro politics and international affairs, like i want to talk about something basic. i want to talk about family. okay. we just completed a press conference that similar families like myself, dual citizens, u.s. citizens as well. we have about ten of us identified here in israel where family members either are in hostage or missing. and like any family, listening to us now, i'm sure the basic thing that you want is to be together with your family. and be there on those special moments. our family, this saturday, is intending to celebrate its bar mitzvah of my youngest son. itay stayed at his base, the previous weekend in order to be home this weekend with us and celebrate. that's what we want. we want to be able to be together, whole, as a family. celebrating, you know, our special moment, and special occasions, like any family that is listening to us now. >> yeah, take me back to last saturday. when is it that you last heard from him? and since? >> so, itay last communicated with us saturday morning. sending a message saying that there are missiles and his base, which is on the border of gaza, is being attacked. and we know that he was out there and he lost communication with other people shortly after. what we know from official idf representatives that talked to us is that itay is defined as missing in action. what does that mean missing in action? it means that since saturday morning, there's no one that has seen him, identified him and saying that he is next to him. he has not been found in a hospital. he has not been identified as deceased. and, basically, it's a war zone that, you know, they're still trying to find where he is. that's the kind of situation that we are at. >> yeah. and, ruby, you know, we were showing a picture of your son who is just like all of your other children, the pride and joy of any father or any mother. 19 years old. what is it you think, ruby, that, first of all, we should know about your son? and then what is it that anyone, we, or anybody else, could do to help you? >> yeah. so, my background, i'm a new yorker. grew up in flatbush. it's a tough neighborhood. but it gives you the dna that prepares you for life. i like to say i'm a proud outcome of the new york public education system. you know, we got to be able to get along with a lot of people. different places, different religions. and that's the type of values and culture that i tried to provide to my son. as a new yorker, you could guess, avid sports fan, new york knicks fan. of course, my child, a really avid basketball, nba fan as well. but he decided to be a lakers fan and kobe bryant. but i guess that's what all kids do to us, doesn't it, jose? >> yeah. well, there are some things that we can't control. in our children, i guess. ruby. but i've got to tell you, you know, there is -- and i was really speaking earlier to an extraordinary mother who is praying and hoping that her daughter is -- can come home, too. and i'm just thinking, ruby, you know, what is it that you want us to know? and what is it that we can do to help? >> yes. so, president biden, we support very much, and he's been saying all of the correct things. you know, we're dealing with an organization that does not act as innocent lives weigh in nations outright. it's a different animal. i don't even know how to call it when you have a representative of that organization taking holocaust survivors and small children as hostages. and massacring, you know, kids, that have a festival of music. so, we applaud president biden, secretary of state for the words and support that they have given so far. but speaking on behalf of myself and my family, we urge president biden not to take a back seat here. and take the lead, only dealing with this situation. and especially, with u.s. citizens that their location is not known at the moment. we urge president biden, with the power that the united states has, both politically as well as other capabilities that the u.s. has, to take an active role in talking to the hamas. and the minimum is acting according to the riyadh rules and the international law and any soldier or civilian that is held hostage, regardless if it's an american, german, israeli, to allow representatives of the red cross, to visit them, to get medical care, and to know what the status is. that, i think, is the minimum requirement. and, two, of course, is ending this as quickly as possible. the picture you see in the background is us in front of the u.s. embassy. so, we have communicated with the state department. and the embassy. besides just getting confirmation that they are aware of the situation. we have not heard anything clear from the state department, what they've done so far. or what they've planned to do going forward. as part of the additional members of the press release that was about an hour ago, all of us, ten families of u.s./israel dual citizens would highly request to have a formal representative sit with us and explain what they know and what they're doing in order to support us. >> and, ruby, you know, as parents, all our life is essentially a series of life lessons and life experiences. that we give our children. many times, those children don't see those life lessons in much later in their own life. but there are some seeds that we plant in our children. and there are roots that take hold in their souls. and i'm just wondering, ruby, what's the message that you want your son, if he were listening to you, about what he must do now? what do you want to tell him? >> i grew up on the streets of new york. we have a new york dna. we know how to get things done when things are tough. he also played basketball. you know, with larger players, more physical players. he never stood down. he knew how to take care of himself. regardless of the situation. and i know, you know, at the age of 19, that's still a young age, jose. >> yeah, it is. >> hopefully, one of the things that we taught him as parents will help him in the very, very unfortunate situation he's in now. >> ruby chen, i can't thank you enough for being with us. i really appreciate it. and, you know, there's hope. and i just want you to know that we're thinking of you. and if there's anything you think that we can do to get your thoughts, your prayers, your concerns, anything out there. >> i thank you for saying that. i just want to share with your audience, please do not think of me or people like us as the headline. you know, we're people, family. at the end of the day, jose, on the weekend, you want to be with your family and have the celebrations, you know, as a giant family. that's what we're asking as well, and asking president biden and secretary of state to be as active as possible to let us go back to our lives. >> indeed, ruby chen, thank you. appreciate it. coming up, the president is actually set to address the attacks in israel in less than two hours. new details about what the u.s. is now sending to israel. plus, new reporting on benjamin netanyahu's warning to biden that israel must go in to gaza. what would a full-scale ground invasion look like? we're watching special coverage of the war in israel on msnbc. and these are us on radio, we've been kind of focused, our cameras have been, on the port of gaza. very important part of the city. where for the better part of an hour and a half, israeli air strikes have been pinpointing and targeting a midsize could look like a fishing village. but let's go to raf sanchez in ashkelon. raf, what's the latest? >> reporter: jose, as you can probably see, we're inside the air raid shelter now. you may be able to hear the booms overhead. and this is part of what has been just the relentless, relentless barrage. you can see here in here with a total stranger. do you want to come further in? come further in. jose, we basically are inside of a large freight container size bunker. there is reinforced concrete here. and this is one of these just a real experience of this war, we're in here now with total strangers, people we don't know, people we may never see again, but there is a weird intimacy, that we're all in this together, as these rockets boom overhead. as the israel iron dome interceptors bring them down. the sirens have stopped now. but it's not a great idea to run out of here immediately, because for minutes after these rocket strikes, shrapnel can be falling from the sky. shrapnel from both the rockets and from the missile interceptors. and what you don't want to do is be walking around as that metallic rain of jag ed metal is coming down. this has been the experience of people here since exactly 5:00 p.m. hamas said earlier today that it was going to fire a punishing barrage of rockets at ashkelon at 5:00 p.m. no one really knew whether it was rhetoric. whether they were just sort of talking up their position. but at the stroke of 5:00 p.m., this barrage of rockets began. and it has been relentless since, jose. >> so, raf, if you would, and i don't want you to move from where you are, not even a centimeter. but describe for us, this is in an area, there are other people, as you were saying, you don't know that came in on it. we can certainly feel the fear on that person. >> reporter: yeah. >> they're going back out. where is this? and what's the process, in other words, when the sirens go off? just describe the whole thing for us. >> reporter: yeah, exactly, well, jose, let's walk back out now, we've given it a moment for the shrapnel to come down. so, we're back out in ashkelon, on any other day, the sun is setting beautifully over the mediterranean. we're actually in the parking lots of a hospital here. and part of the reason we're in this area is that the hospital has a massive underground bunker. the idea is that they want to be able to evacuate all of the patients from the different wards, from the emergency room, and get them down underground. so the hospital has a bunker. and there is -- that can be a source of comfort for people, knowing that above and beyond. i'll just show you, jose, this is what this bomb shelter looks like from the outside, you know, if you didn't know what you were looking at, you might think this is some kind of freight container or something. but these are absolutely everywhere in southern israel. just literally within this large parking lot, i can see a couple of them. and it is part of the grim daily routine here. that people run into these bomb shelters. you look into the faces of strangers. many of whom are very, very afraid. when the interceptions happen overhead, you feel a little thump, a kind of whoosh as the air pressure changes. you can feel it in your chest, we're obviously wearing body armor here. you're already constricted. and then after a few minutes, you walk about out into the air and you hope there haven't been direct hits. and you hope there won't be more rockets. jose, i think everyone understands there will be more rockets. i'll just close with this and say, on this side the border, people can run to these bomb shelters. a few miles down the coast in gaza, there are no bomb shelters. the palestinians in gaza have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide as the israel air strikes come down. israel says it only targets military facilities. but there are -- these are some of the most densely populated places on earth. and it is just inevitable, when heavy bombs are dropped in population centers like that, that civilians are going to get killed. and they are being killed today, jose. >> and, raf, i know you have spent so much time in all of the areas, but specifically, in some of the areas that are right now seeing the most intense part of the bombing in gaza. i'm just wondering, raf, it's almost as though, it's a -- it's a city, it's so densely populated. how does the authorities, intelligence, et cetera, differentiate between civilians and hamas, when many times, they're intertwined, as far as where they're living and where they're existing. and then, you know, i keep thinking about these hostages as well. just paint the picture of just how densely populated that area is. >> reporter: yeah, jose, it's such a good point. and it is true, that hamas and the civilian population are intermingled. that there are hamas facilities in residential neighborhoods. israel says that hamas uses the population of gaza as human shields, to try to, you know, shield themselves from israeli strikes by hiding behind civilians. there is a network of tunnels underneath gaza city, built by hamas. it's how they move military hardware around. and you can bet that those israeli hostages, those 150 or so people are likely in those tunnels. they're likely spread out across the network. as hamas tries to make it as difficult as possible for israel to rescue these hostages we're seeing as such valuable bargaining chips. in terms of how israel goes about reducing civilian casualties, they say that they use very precise intelligence before they strike any specific location. i've been inside gaza when israel has been bombing. and you meet palestinians who say that their phone rang, and on the other end of the line was an israeli military officer telling them in arabic, we're going to strike your apartment because there's hamas infrastructure, but we want you to go door by door to make sure nobody is in before we strike. in some cases it can be an hour before they bomb it making sure nobody is inside. and jose, when you drop high-powered explosives in a place highly populated that civilians will be killed. the death toll here is about 800, and here, it's about 900, south of the country, bodies of hamas gunmen, but also people killed in the intense wave of rocket fire. jose. >> hey, raf, i just told you this, just my admiration, my infinite admiration for you. you're really extraordinary. i thank you. and please send our best to or also extraordinary crew. appreciate it, raf. >> reporter: i will, some of the best in the business, thank you. >> they are, indeed, thanks. joining from us israel is msnbc ali velshi, ali, what's the latest where you are? >> reporter: i'm not too far north of where raf is right now. we're on our way, we were delayed because i went to the home of a woman who had escaped from a kibbutz when the attack had occurred friday night, saturday morning. her husband told her to run, they had a 1-month-old baby, so she ran, i went to her home to interview her, as i approached she was on a balcony screaming into her phone, she was screaming in hebrew, why are you phoning me to tell me this. it was the army telling her that her husband who she thought was taken hostage was actually found dead, shot in the head. she was distraught. an ambulance called to help her out. she's learned that, her husband's father didn't know about it, this woman's father phoned that man to invite him to come so far so she could tell him. that's the sort of situation that we're seeing over israel. the depth of the scale means that everybody was touched by it. even as i was standing out outside, as i planned to talk to this woman, i was talking to her neighbors, everybody has a picture on the phone, someone they knew who had died. there was a level of fear, even in places that are not ashkelon or israel. even in tel aviv. we started the day in tel aviv, there were several rocket interceptions that happened over us, as we packed up our gear, i counted six or seven alone. that is across the country. what raf is showing you is in many other places. it's highly concentrated in southern israel. israel has said, by the way, it has secured all of the villages and towns around gaza. now they have said in the words of one particular idf commander, we're going on the offensive. that doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as what benjamin netanyahu said, a ground offensive into gaza. it just means there are capabilities, we're focused on offensive capabilities. that's been happening since friday night, with helicopter and air attacks on gaza. the question becomes who are the hostages, how many of them are there and how do they get them out? as discussing with raf, gaza is super assumer dense, an apartment buildings. that's a very difficult situation. a few years ago, it is an impossible place, jose, to get into. while israel has a great deal of surveillance over, guys, there's always a drone overhead. they can see everything from the sky. what hamas knows that israel can't see is what is above the buildings and below the buildings. that's what america is thinking about right now, how do you get the hostages out without compromising their safety. >> you know, ali, when you're talking about this encounter that you had with this lady who, as you were approaching her just found out that her husband was dead, shot in the head. you know, it's almost as though, it's so important that we kind of step back and just realize that this is an unprecedented level. this massacre, is unprecedented. this morning on "morning joe," the israeli ambassador to the u.s. capita, this is as if the united states lost 30,000 people. 30,000 americans in a massacre in our own country. and, ali, you know, how do -- how are people processing this? there. >> reporter: it's -- so there's two things that are slightly different than what typically happens in israel. even for people who are sort of younger, than 40 or 50 years old who have no intention with israel's neighbors or with the palestinians their entire lives. there is a different level of fear. it's a personal trauma thing, in addition to fear. because, like 9/11, even in new york, there were people who knew people who worked at the company where somebody had died. or some some connection to them. it seems more personal, because of the mathematics of it, the way you describe it. in fact, we were working with somebody whose daughter had been invited to that party on friday night. and she was ready to go. she actually had -- she asked her parents, she was at her parents' house do you have a bottle of wine. she said there's an open bottle in the fridge. no, i'm going to a party i need a bottle of wine. she was securing the wine with her parents. her boyfriend said, let's go, her boyfriend left, went to the party and was killed. she stayed with her parents, she's alive. this mans were working with us. she's now in distress, the daughter is in distress. everybody where, everywhere you go, someone knows somebody directly and personally. that's created a level of personal trauma on top of the fear of is a rocket going to hit me. >> and, ali, i was just speaking to a mother that is praying and hoping that her daughter is alive. and you know, hasn't heard from her since saturday. but i just -- ali, you know, this really, it boils down to just the most basic level of human dignity. and human -- the desire of people to live. and we can't forget that, you know, this was in every way, an attack on civilians. and, yes, when we're talking about what may be going on in gaza, that we have to think about civilians. this attack, on saturday, was a massacre against civilians. >> reporter: yeah, and i think there's a distinction between what israel knows happens from gaza in the past which are these sort of somewhat ineffective rockets that they send up and most of them are intercepted by the iron dome system. and sometimes, one lands in a farm or somewhere else. and this, right, there's a personalization of what happened at that party and people in the kibbutzes who are shot at close range and taken away. the rockets have an impersonal nature. somebody who is a vague enemy targeting us, same thing as you see in ukraine. this was very personal. these are personal crimes. war crimes, crimes against humanity. so that's the distinction. as you said, there's a similar thing going none gaza, in which noncombatants, innocent, noncombatants will die. there are one things rules of war for combatants, people in wars meant to fight with each other. not for innocents. there's no army, no place in the world, where it is acceptable for innocents to die. innocents to die deliberately at the hands of combatants. you saw combatants go and kill innocent people. again, i have to tell you, we've got 138,000 people or more in gaza, outside of their homes. they're cut off from electricity and water and diesel is going to run out in a day or two. so you're going to have a humanitarian disaster there which involves people who are noncombatant, that have nothing to do with this. that's where the fear sinks in, i'm not part of this political whatever is going on dispute, i just want to live my life, and now people are dead. >> ali velshi, thank you very much. it's good to see you, my friend, appreciate it. this afternoon, president biden is scheduled to speak about the attacks 1:00 p.m. eastern. as we know, at least 11 americans were skilled in the massacre, violence there. joining us there is nbc news correspondent gabe gutierrez. what can we expect to hear from the president. >> reporter: as you said, the president expected to speak in less than an hour and a half. this morning, the president, as well as the vice president, have been meeting with the national security team. also before this remarks this afternoon, they're expected to speak with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. now, his remarks will certainly talk about standing solidly with israel. and also, an update, on perhaps the death toll, so far, as you said, 11 confirmed americans dead. an unknown number of hostages, potentially, although white house officials said there's no evidence exactly how many. or even if there are any american hostages. but yesterday, the president spent the day, part of the day, wi his national security team. and also put out a statement with european allies talking about support for israel. but also warning other actor information the region. enemies of israel, not to take advantage of this opportunity. in a perceived vulnerability on the part of israel. now, this morning, the national security council spokesperson said that there was also a security assistance on the way to israel, as well. and this comes after, jose, the u.s. has already sent that carrier strike force to the eastern mediterranean, not just agency a show of force, of power, but also to act as a deterrent and the concern is, here in the administration is to try to prevent this from escalating into a larger conflict. so, again, the president expected to speak at 1:00 this afternoon. we're awaiting his remarks, jose. this will be his second on-camera remarks since the fighting broke out. jose. >> and, gabe, you talk about, you know, clearly some of the things happening in the last 24, 48 hours, the american carrier group sent over is a message by the united states to the other actors. i'm just wondering what the biggest other actor could be is iran. is there anything that the white house is discussing about iran's possible involvement, or not? in detailed planning, et cetera, of what happened. >> reporter: well, at this point, jose, the posture of the white house and administration is that they have seen no direct evidence linking iran to the plotting of this attack. but there are have been wide reports and security and intelligence officials say there's a high likelihood that iran was somehow involved. and the administration has said that iran and hamas have had a long relationship here, but they're still investigating this. they're also investigating, jose, again, the number of potential hostages that may have been taken. so far, no information on that, jose. >> gabe gutierrez in washington. thank you so very much. israel says it's called up 300,000 reservists in response to saturday's attack. joining us the retired kernel, senior adviser at the center for strategic international studies. colonel, thank you very much for being with us. you know, we've just been discussing all morning about what it would take, and what it would look like if israel does indeed decide to go into gaza, and we're seeing, as at 6:48 p.m., there right now, one of those boats that have been hit consistently in the port of gaza. it is in flames. what, colonel, would be some of the considerations that the israelis would have to make? and what would a ground invasion look like? >> well, it's really sort of a signals of a ground invasion moving troops up to the border, it wok a very tough fight. as you noted gaza is very built up, israelis would have to capture it building by building. room by room, it would take a lot of infantry, also probably use a lot of precision munitions to take out individual buildings. the united states is already sending some to israel, they'll probably use a lot more. but it's going to take a lot of time. >> and when you're talking about infantry, about time and about destructive, you know, there's also the possibility that maybe 100 or more hostages that were taken from israel may be in some parts of gaza. would that -- how would that be taken into consideration? >> that's a huge issue for the israelis. they have teams that are very good at hostage rescue. my guess is that they will try to rescue the hostages sngs they can identify groups of them. it's going to be very difficult. the israelis have signalled they want to break hamas. they have to go in. >> it's so widespread, so densely populated. they may be in who knows how many different locations. i'm just wondering, what do you think we will witness in the next days or weeks? >> i think you will see a grinding campaign that goes block by block into the gaza strip as the israelis try to break hamas, as they locate groups of hostages. i think they will try to rescue them. wish them well. they are very good at it. the risks are huge. hamas is clearly very welling or -- well organized and very well trained. >> i thank you very much for being with us. i very much appreciate your time. up next, what's happening in israel could alter the war in ukraine.
