israeli airstrikes have hit targets in gaza during the night and into daybreak after prime minister benjamin netanyahu vowed mighty vengeance for yesterday's attack by hamas. at least 250 people have been killed in israel making it the country's deadliest attack in decades. the palestinian health ministry says more than 230 people have died in israeli strikes on gaza. israel says it's cutting of gaza supplies of electricity, fuel and the goods and the military says full ground operations are now imminent. the prime minister rishi sunak said he will work with the partners over the next 24 hours to coordinate support for israel as calls of condemnation and restraint come from capitals around the world. while in lebanon's palestinian refugee camps, hundreds have taken to the streets to celebrate the assault by hamas. >> good morning and welcome to sky news breakfasts live from jerusalem, israeli forces have spent the night striking back from the sky and on the ground after hamas launched the deadliest day of violence in israel for some 50 years. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu vowed mighty vengeance while hamas leader ismail kenya has warned the assault that began and gaza will spread to the west bank and he says to here in jerusalem. israel retaliated with its own counter offensive launching a series of airstrikes across the gaza strip, which have continued into this morning. almost 250 people have been killed in israel since hamas launched a barrage of rockets and sent fighters bursting through the gaza barrier fence, just over 24 hours ago. and more than 230 in gaza have been killed in israel's retaliatory strike, which troops are battling communist gunman in southern israel still this morning and the israeli defense forces say the situation is not fully under control. first this morning our middle east correspondent alistair bonds begins the coverage with this report. >> overnight the israeli military have been hitting targets inside the gaza strip. in revenge for yesterday's attack by hamas. in term, hamas has continued to fire rockets into israel. the boom and flash from the iron dome defense system intercepting it lit up the dark sky and could be heard across israel through the night. this morning israeli security forces are still fighting to regain full control of southern israel after hamas militants invaded yesterday. this was a police station in the israeli town of surat which had been taken by hamas. hamas fighters initially used a bulldozer and explosives to open the security fence which surrounds gaza. some pickup trucks, of there on bikes, entered nearby israeli towns and villages. the israeli defense force was taken completely by surprise. >> our first goal is to cleanse the area of the enemy forces that have infiltrated it. i call on all citizens of israel to unite, to achieve our highest goal, victory in the war. >> the israeli death toll is high, and an unknown number of israelis have been kidnapped and taken into gaza. israel's focus will now be on rescuing them, whilst at the same time exacting revenge on hamas. it will be an extremely tricky operation. israel says it's turning of electricity and fuel into the gaza strip and has warned gazans to leave any building that might be hiding hamas fighters. these really defense minister warned that live in gaza will never be the same again. it is only into its second day that this shows every sign of being a long and difficult war ahead. alasdair bunkall, sky news. >> rishi sunak has denounced the attack by hamas as cowardly and depraved, adding that israel has an absolute right to defend itself. joining us now is sky correspondent matthew thompson. matthew, condemnation from across the west, what more has rishi sunak been saying? >> yes right across the west and also read across the political spectrum here in the united kingdom, first of prime minister rishi sunak was quick off the mark to condemn the attack. he wrote on twitter, as the barbarity of today's atrocity become clearer, we stand unequivocally with industrial. this attack by a moscow ugly and depraved. we've expressed our full solidarity to netanyahu, that's of course the israeli prime minister and we will work with partners in the next few hours to coordinate support. there's been condemnation from the foreign secretary, but across the political secretary, the leader of the labour party has said in no uncertain terms that israel has a right to defend itself. but also here, domestically, some concern as the metropolitan police have said it is stepping up patrols across london after some video footage began circulating last night on social media of people seemingly celebrating the attacks in israel. waving palestinian flags and dancing in the streets, clips were shared. they urged metropolitan police to step in. they tweeted a response i remain in close contact with senior leadership at the met and communities across our cities. londoners will see an additional police presence, let me be clear, he said, hate crime in london will not be tolerated. >> thank you very much indeed, our international affairs has more from southern israel. >> as you say this is more than 24 hours after hamas launched this unprecedented attack on the territory. they still don't have their own territory under control. there are two i think austin choo choo a shuns they're most worried about, involving at least 50 hostages each, reportedly one in the kibbutz area, outside gaza the other way off king, four doesn't -- the israelis are reeling in shock from what is an unimaginable nightmare. and a horror. they've seen the palestinian launched an attack that they have never seen anyone perform. the two things is really depend the most, they believe in their military and intelligence, but they've been taken by surprise by this. adding to that the palestinian enemy hamas seems to have transformed itself into a completely different kind of fighting force, able to launch the multipronged attack on land, sea and air front, but also penetrating through the very expensive, the security fence that surrounds gaza, 29 points the israeli says. through the -- thousands of fighters on motorbikes, jeeps and they went to the neighboring settlement around gaza and deep into israel. they massacred civilians, killing soldiers, taking armored vehicles, and also taking hostages. what's been happening overnight is an exchange of missile fire, rocket fire, we're hearing about a dozen miles north of gaza, fairly constant sound of guns firing missiles into gaza. in return, the palestinians have hit a number of sites in the towns of -- they hit a residential complex and a medical center says the israelis. they said the operation is underway and retaliation for what the palestinians have done and continue to do and a ground operation is eminent these. really prime minister saying that no hiding place will be left -- they will all be turned to rubble. he is saying to the gazans are they need to move out of gaza or across gaza to avoid the areas that the israelis will be striking with the olive chilly. the operation which is expected to go on for a long time will be, i think, in for the long haul, will be deeply complicated by the fact that the palestinians have taken 150 hostage's, it seems, civilians and soldiers. or the loss of any hostage or the taking of any hostage has been an agony in the past but it's been in one or twos to lose that many hostages is a tournament and something the israelis have never really had to go through in the past. the palestinians are releasing videos of these hostages being taken into gaza. videos yet unverified but distressing to his rallies but hiring for anyone to watch, we saw jewish boy being slapped around by palestinian kids. a number of israeli families being held by the palestinians, one of an old woman. the fears that the palestinians are really goading the israelis to do their worst, to launch something that would be so disproportionate if they may draw in as the actors and supporters of the region. very dangerous moments, mark. a. for the region, israel as we wait to see how israel will respond. >> dominic there in the southern israel. there has been universal condemnation from the west with president joe biden describing a massive assault as unconscionable. others including russia and saudi arabia have called for a cease-fire while in lebanon and iran, how glass has been celebrated and praised. u.s. correspondent mark stone has been looking at the global reaction. reaction >> the seriousness of this moment cannot be overstated. that represents a truly bloody turning point in this long conflict. and so from the back foot to the offensive. the consequence of saturdays terrorism against israel will be truly terrifying for the people of gaza. in washington, unequivocal support from israel's closest ally and biggest backer. >> today the people of israel are under attack, orchestrated by a terrorist organization, hamas. in this moment of tragedy, i want to say to them in the world, and terrorists everywhere, the united states stands with israel. we will not ever fail to have their back. we will make sure that they have the help their citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves. >> but, behind the unwavering support, he knows what israeli revenge looks like. he doesn't know how further huge bloodshed can now be avoided. the combination of thousands of rockets fired at israel and the breaking down of the gaza border fence suggests an operation that was months in the planning. a hamas military commander says this was not a hidden run operation, we started an all out battle, he says. that is true and we just don't know what happens next or how wide this could spread. american officials have said they hope it remains confined to gaza. maybe, but it's hard to see how. the security situation in the west bank with a palestinian leader -- 2023 has been the most violent year in two decades. it's boosted support here in the west bank for hamas and gaza and they celebrated saturday's attack. in lebanon they celebrated to, behind this is the militant group hezbollah, whose well rehearsed opportunist tactics -- on another front. lebanon's broken politics and economy make things more dangerous. the biggest unknown, iran, how will israel respond to their conviction that this is, in the end and iran problem, their influence stretches to syria, lebanon and down to gaza. just last month netanyahu was at the u.n. touting a possible peace deal with saudi arabia. he wants it, so do the saudis. now, not likely. this will be everyone's focus right now, gaza. israel told civilians to leave, but where to? they are closed in. watch how egypt response. they could open the southern border crossing and face nearly 1 million refugees. a long, long conflict that has been forgotten, ignored or tolerated by too many for too long. it took a grim new twist this weekend. mark stone, sky news. >> joining me now from tel aviv is the lawyer, he is also chief executive of the international legal forum. thank you for being with us. first of all, what are your thoughts about what is going on in your country right now? >> my thoughts before coming on to do this interview with you my first thought was to look at where i am in to make sure where is the fastest escape path in case of rocket comes. what we are seeing here in israel in the last 24 hours is harrowing, you have people grieving, a nation that is in absolute shock. i would ask you to put yourself and your listeners in your search in the situation if you were sleeping on a sunday morning in london and all of a sudden, there's a mass infiltration of ices like terrorists. this is what we are dealing with. these iranian-backed hamas terrorist infiltrated into israel, they came to our homes, they took children. they took the elderly by their will chair, they took women, they violated them, shot them in cold blood. innocent people. >> sorry to interrupt you, i'm just asking how could it have happened? israel prides itself on intelligence services, security, defense. how could this have happened? >> i don't have the answer to that. there's a time in place for everything, there will be a time and place for political recriminations, assessments and understanding what happened and how to prevent it from ever happening again. that will come in due course, i can assure you that. right now the primary concern is to secure the situation. to repel the terrorist will have infiltrated and retrieve those who are kept. >> there is widespread condemnation as we have been hearing of hamas and this attack and the infiltration and hostage taking, but there is also those in the west and certainly among puritan emperors here who say that the actions of this government have in some ways contributed to the tensions which have now exploded like never before. >> i think that is irrelevant, we have to remember who were dealing with, hamas is not the salvation army, hamas is a bloodthirsty i iranian-backed group. who wants israel's destruction. they parade women, they kidnapped children. this is not a humane force. what we are dealing with. this is not a battle between israel and hamas, this is a battle between good and evil. between those who seek freedom and those who deny freedom. those who want to seek peace and those who are barbarians. we will do anything necessary to defend ourselves irrespective of what they might say. >> but isn't it difficult to say it's irrelevant when as mark stone was reporting this is the most right-wing government ever in israel and has been the most violent year for two decades in israel? it's difficult to say that it is irrelevant. it's difficult to say that the claims of the palestinians are irrelevant and all of this. >> hamas has been around for 20 something plus years, we've had every kind of government here in israel, left wing, right-wing, center, and everything in between. there've been offers, and offers about peace, the one constant has been palestinian terror, and rejection. you don't negotiate with a group like hamas. they are a bloodthirsty islamic terrorist organization. there are not a rational actor, you can't negotiate with them. they are wanting to destroy and annihilate the state of israel. the united kingdom would not negotiate with ices, nor will we negotiate with hamas. >> thank you very much indeed. thank you. now from jerusalem, let's go back to sky acaf is in the report. >> the party conference here in opens later on this morning with a speech from angela range focus on the importance of affordable housing. really this is an opportunity for labor to flush out some of the broader policy areas and explain to voters what it will mean to elect a labor governor which we are expecting next year. we're told that there are focused on economic growth. they have two big announcements overnight towards that. the first is to create an extra 2 million nhs appointments, which is meant to get people out of waiting list and back into work. their funding this from 1.1 billion pounds, they are doing this by abolishing the dom tax status. they will pay existing nhs doctors and nurses to do overtime on the weekends, and in the evenings to run additional clinics, to provide those extra appointments. clearly the issue of long nhs waiting list is something that resonates with voters, that's what's one of the key priorities, trying to cut the waiting list down, that hasn't gone particularly well for the prime minister so far. this is a new idea from labor but clearly we know that is the nhs workforces -- they are really struggling to cover the average that they have so that will be the questionnaires with this idea the other suggestion is a technical colleges who are told that young adults will be trained in specific skills that local businesses have identified as a shortage of in the individual areas, suggestions including cloud computing, lab technicians, green energy kind of specialists which is another idea they say will help boost the economy. that's not to say that's not criticism coming into labor this conference, where graham from the ninth union the biggest donor to labor have accused apart of being too timid. >> trevor phillips on sundays coming up shortly, his guests include israeli ambassador and you will be speaking to the key players at the labor conference. among them shadow homestead terry. that is declared a state of war. i don't yesterday hamas fired hundreds of rockets, and evaded southern israel. the israelis are fighting fire with even more fire. rashid sunak says israel has an absolute right to defend itself, and they have condemned the attacks as an act of terror. here on this side the polls look good for labor, it's not over yet, the voters still want to know what the man who could be our next prime minister stands for. we will hear direct from israel, the ambassador to london's life. the shadow hole secretary aims to reform the health service. we will try to discover how in what could be their last jamboree before a general election. their tails are up after crushing by election victories in scotland. but it isn't a labor party if there isn't a quarrel brewing. this time it's about whether labor leader should be bolder and weather has enough time to convince the voter that he has what it takes. but before we get into all that, let's turn to the grim news from israel. the ambassador to the uk joins us from good match mail now. good morning, ambassador. >> good morning, trevor. >> i can't hear you. >> if you can hear me, can you bring us up to date on what you understand to be happening on the ground right now? >> well, trevor, let's start with what happened yesterday. yesterday morning we woke up here in israel to a nightmare. london is a city that is experienced with terror attacks, london bridge attack manchester arena attack, but multiply all those terror attacks to the big numbers that create over 1000 israelis in hospitals. 300 israelis brutally, barbara klieman murdered, in cold blood by hamas terrorists. that planned in the most calculated way to invade israel from the air, from the landing from the sea. they created the hardest day israelis ever experienced in their lifetime. i was there. i experienced many terror attacks, this is not another terror attack. this is a situation where people couldn't be safe in their own homes. cities were invaded. we're talking about tourist going from one house to another one and brutally targeting children. we're talking about young children being taken away from their parents to gaza. young women, we saw the videos, trevor i don't know how much you've seen from all those clips being on social media yesterday from older people, people will dementia, were hijacked taking hostage to gaza by hamas terrorists. this is the reality that israelis woke up to yesterday. this is the time of every country to defend itself, and to the international community to support israel's right to defend its children, women and elderly, that were targeted yesterday by hamas. >> we have indeed been watching some of what we've been able to show, as you might imagine, we haven't been able to show everything that has been seen by skies reporters. but, it is indeed horrific. we understand, this morning, that rockets have been fired at the other end of israel by hezbollah. what do you think is happening there? it is coordinated? is there a new front? >> first of all, we are ready in the north front. yesterday both the prime minister and the defense minister were preparing our army troops to be ready to have both fronts of israel protected. but at the moment, the main war is with hamas. hamas sponsored and being a proxy of iran made a big mistake by getting into israeli villages, taking 100 people, hijack to gaza strip. and the main responsibility is to bring back the people alive. most of them are young kids. some of them are elderly people as i mentioned before. we are talking about people whose families are torn apart from this horrific event yesterday. one of the things i wanted to say is that israel's duty here is to defend its people. it's something that all international communities must respect. we've seen prime minister sunak support israel yesterday. president biden's declaration that the u.s. stands with israel. we need to make sure that no matter how long this war takes, the international community understands that israel doesn't have another choice. we need to defend our children and people. >> how to come to the international news in the moment, i want to ask you about israel's immediate response today. can we expect, i know you can't talk to us about the military details, but can we expect to see israeli defense forces, troops in gaza, which i think would be the first time in nearly a decade that that has happened? >> i'm not getting into the military tactics, i would like to say the main aims of this war. it's a war, you need to understand many people are saying the israelis are fighting again. no, it's at a new level. it's another scale, we never experienced a situation where main citizens of israel, south part of israel, think about bristol being taken over by terrorists. they are walking from one house to another, i've seen sites i've never seen yesterday. mothers crying when their children are being taken away from them. i've seen this father that lost connection to his wife and his daughter and realized by calling and identifying his phone that it has been hijacked and taken to gaza. we are talking about a situation where a terrorist walk into the living room of people in israel and started targeting families one by one. those families were being butchered by these hamas tourists. this is the situation where we need to make sure it will never happen again. the infrastructure in of hamas will be totally destroyed. >> ambassador, when you say you are at war, this suggests something more than a policing action. what exactly will that mean? what would be your war aims here? is this the end of the arrangement between israel and gaza, and gaza self governing proposition? >> from 2005 israel left gaza strip. the palestinians got their hundred percent possibility to control the gaza strip. unfortunately, instead of using all the international support to build a flourishing city, we've seen hamas terror organization fusing and abusing all the support to create a terrorist city. to create an evil city. to create a place where the only thing they want to achieve is to destroy israel and to kill innocent people in israel. this is the reason why our first aim is to bring back those people that have been taken hostage. we're talking over 100 people that are hostage, at the moment, in gaza strip, and israeli families don't know where they are. i've seen the horrible photographs and videos coming from those people being taken to gaza. this is our duty to our people. the second thing, of course, is to make sure hamas will never commit those crimes again. >> ambassador, it wouldn't just be that leaders of hamas who would say what i am about to put to you, they would say of course 2005, there's been formal if you'd like autonomy for gaza, but in truth, access to and from gaza trade in and out of gaza hasn't hardly been controlled by israel itself. it isn't a separate independent thing. when you say they failed to build something flourishing, i think some people would ask actually it's not entirely their own failure. their own failure. >> absolutely 100 percent are failing. we're talking here about a place that had massive support from the international community. they built tunnels underneath gaza, they used all the money to build tunnels to make sure that israel would be under attack. those rockets being fired, over 3000 rockets, this is what hamas has done with the power the international community gave them. i must say again, israel doesn't want war. but we are in the necessity of a war because we need to protect our children. i must tell you as a mother that my daughter was asking yesterday, why do they want to kill us? my answer was, you're right, you are a child, it doesn't make sense. the truth and the reality is those barbaric terrorist want to kill children. we need to protect them. >> ambassador, one last point, quickly. do you detect the hand of iran in this? >> absolutely! iran is backing up hamas. iran's destabilizing all the region through its proxies both hamas and as bola. i think the prime minister statement issued it was clear. we are willing to take a fighting hand to defend our people, but we need to make sure anyone will have any motivation to do that again. because israel's -- >> may i ask you one question, may ask you one last question, this will be important to our viewers. one of our viewers will have found that -- if you have any information about the position of british nationals, whether they've been swept up in this in any way? >> there is one british citizen that is in gaza at the moment. i know that israel is doing everything to make sure all the people being kept hostage at the moment at the hands of hamas will be released. it's a long and complicated war, this is what we mean when we say we need your support to make sure every civilian that has been taken will be brought back to israel, where they belong. and those horrible war crimes were created yesterday by hamas by killing and listen to people, that this thing will be as interns that this will never happen again. this is my message for you today. >> ambassador, thank you very much. >> yes, thank you very. much >> let's get some immediate reaction from labor he had the conference in liverpool. hundreds are dead, thousands are injured, what is your reaction to this assault on israel by hamas? >> there can be no justification, whatsoever for the bar buried behavior we've seen unfold on our televisions and social media feeds. i cannot imagine what people in israel are going through. like i can't imagine, i mean i literally can't imagine it. the murder, with violence, the kidnappings. the parents having to explain to their children what is going on and why they are fleeing for safety. and that is why it has to be unequivocally condemned. why we unequivocally condemns the violence. and, you know, i think, for the future both israelis and palestinians, there is no future that involves this violence, this bloodshed. i think for our country, other democracies in the world, it's important that we stand with israel. israel's right to defend itself and hope that in the aftermath of the bloodshed and violence we're seeing unfold on our television screens, there might still be some hope of a way through that sees both israelis and palestinians living with peace and security and freedom. that future feels a long way away from what we're seeing now. >> i know you know israel i believe you spent a week studying the health service. how much do you think this has set back any progress towards peace in the middle east? >> it's the early days, let's see how things unfold. it is hard to see how, off the back of this you get to our think we ought to be which is a piece initiative, ideally one that is led by the hour league to bring together israelis and palestinians are on the table to negotiate what i believe is the only solution to this conflict which is the two state solution. it's hard to see what we're seeing unfolding on our television screens doesn't setback that calls, holds, prospects for peaceful solution were both israelis and palestinians can live with the freedom, the security that any of us would want to enjoy. and the hope of a better future. >> we shall see how this rather incredibly grim scenario unfolds, i'm sure we will be reporting on it for days. of course, you have your responsibilities here and you will be talking to the labor conference about your plan for health service, before we get into that, i spoke to laborers i guess because union donor or the head of the biggest union donor sharon grim the boss of that unite union i want to show you what she said about you, really. >> okay. >> i'm gonna keep labours feet to the fire of course i want a labor government, i want a labor government of course, but i want to labor government that is going to make real change to peoples lives, i think adult moment labor is being too timid. >> so, how do you respond to that suggestion that you are too timid? >> let me just take the nhs as an example, we've committed to the biggest expansion of an inch of staff in history to give the nhs the staff it needs to treat patients on time. we've committed to having dedicated -- >> i want to come to that -- >> but this is important, trevor. >> i will come back on the detail but just outlined the anticipation, school counselors in every -- community mental health -- a plan that will create 2 million more appointments a year to get the backlogs down which we've announced this weekend doubling the amount of cte scans, and mri scans to get people diagnosed in their four treated faster. a plan to create 7000 extra dentistry appointments this year. if we delivered just one of those policies it would be transformation in terms of peoples experience of health care in this country. taken together, they form the basis of a serious plan to grip the worst crisis in the nhs history and build and nhs that is fit for the future. we have the ambition, the plan, we have the team and now we have to make our case so that people can vote for it. >> i can't exactly channel sharon graham but what she would say is that yes, that's all very fine, but actually, the big thing right now is energy, cost of living, you're not doing very much on that, would you really need to do is nationalize the electricity and gas industry. we are not hearing anything from labor on that scale. >> we have one better to deliver will change for people which is we've committed to a real windfall tax. that would deliver real help to families in terms of cost of living. and, the ambitious plan through gb energy into the enormous expansion of both new nuclear and new renewables to create energy security, the jobs -- that's an ambitious plan, it's a credible plan. a plan we are going to make our case to the british people. >> you are not bothered by the reports that her view is actually shared, the view that you're basically a bit wet a shared by some old people. >> i don't think that's a fair characterization of their views. you can read what they said in the newspaper yesterday. >> and you look at where the labour party was when he became the leader of the labour party an existential crisis, will labor ever win again is what people would say? he has taken the labour party from the ashes of our worst defeat since 1935, drag the labour party back to the mainstream and has built a team and a platform that can give britain the future back and is building public support on the scale of labor price has never seen since its last heading towards government. >> nobody is going to argue i think about the case that the labour party has been straightened out, that things you were criticized for have now been solved. what we are talking about today for the possibility of a labor government, but i think people want to know is what does that mean? you've put some flesh on the bones this weekend. you announced that you spent 171 million pounds on your scanners, for the nhs, so we can get ahead of cancer rather like the one you yourself suffer from, we're hearing a billion and a half to pay for over time said the scanners can actually be used. now, the nhs has a budget of 2 million pounds, a staff of 1.3 million pounds. this doesn't really match the scale of the disaster that you've been telling us for a year. that the tories have brought up. this is a mouse compared to what you said is a terrible, terrible the destruction of the nhs. >> as i am going to be outlining in my speech conference on wednesday, the way we made the nhs fit for the future is not just investment, it's reform, i would argue reform is even more important than investment, in the sense that if you just keep on point every increasing amount of taxpayer money into a system that is failing, it's wasteful in every sense. >> what's the reform? what's the big reform? when >> i compared the nhs to other health care systems around the world and i look out what your outcomes are so much poor, it's because effectively we do late diagnosis which means more expensive, less effective treatment. we have been and they tested is effectively a hospital base sickness service. we need to wire the nhs so we do far more primary care and care in the community faster diagnosis, faster access to general practice. more caring people's homes. >> i don't want -- >> so there are four argument, will you do just put more money -- >> but i don't -- >> spend more money. >> what you just said about social care, let's just stay with what you said you wanted to do. because i wonder if it really matches up to the task and whether you can do it. were you said you will spend this billion billion and a half on overtime, we can working and so on. we looked at the nhs own staff's, and he was with the staff say, 35%, one in three nhs workers say they often feel burned out because of their work. 31%, one and three say they feel exhausted and thought of another day's work. you are not going to get people to get overtime. this is wishful thinking. >> the reassurance i can offer people's -- >> how are you going to -- the people who are going to do -- >> well give me a chance to say it? the reassurance i can offer is firstly, this is not compulsion this is voluntary, staff will be -- >> i'm not asking about that, i'm asking how are you going to get people to man the scanners? >> the second reassurances that the reason we've adopted this approach is because it's an approach that has been shown to be working in some london hospitals. i want to take the best performance in the nhs the extraordinary performance and make it the everyday experience, the ordinary performance of the country, we can't just have an nhs that's performing well in london, it has to perform well for the rest of the country. it's a credible plan, it's going to create 2 million appointments per year and that will be game changing in terms of getting a waiting list downs. >> you're trying to sell it to me, polemical you with somebody else said about this, about the nhs's staff, looking at the fact that the labor said that they are doing 1 million hours overtime a year last year, the country in that after their sacrifice and commitment during the first wave of covid. but now we are -- in the nhs they are being asked to give even more. you know who said that? >> john ashworth. >> yes, your predecessor. he says we can't ask staff to do more. now you're turning up and saying by the way we want you to do even more, we want you to work weekends, evenings, how are you going to make that happen? >> as i say, trevor it would be voluntary for staff -- >> and they will say no! >> they would be paid fairly. >> some staff will not want to do it but they will be paid fairly. the plan to deliver to million appointments doesn't assume a majority of staff are going to be piling into do this. what matters is that we can't get the stuff we need every part of the country to help us deliver to million more appointments. of course, we also have to deal with the underlying pressures that staff are facing. that are leading them to walk out. the risk for the future of the nhs isn't simply they walk out from more strikes they walk out of the nhs altogether. we have retention challenge in the nhs. not just recruitment challenges. i get it but this is a serious plan to deliver 2 million more appointments. i think staff will be proud to deliver the appointments. patients will be grateful to receive. them >> i want to go back to a chair and said, you said this weekend, you're calling on these and conservatives to come to labor they have a home in labor to quote you. of course some people say that's what you really want which is to turn the party into a comfortable place for red tories they called you, about yourself. >> i'm very proud of the fact that the labour party is appealing to the country rat are than propelling people. my goodness that change could have come out of better, time when you look at the crack thoughts and conspiracy theories that have taken over the conservative party when you have cabinet ministers like mark on your program this morning peddling conspiracy theories, as if he's being doomed scrolling tiktok trying to find the most -- >> i will ask him about that. -- >> what are these people doing? and how on earth does this address the biggest crises in our country? the cost of living crisis, the nhs crisis, and here's the kicker, he can't be to change the country needs, because his government of 13 years has been part of the problem. only labor can give britain as a feature back. that's what the case were making here liverpool this week. >> we'll see how he reacts to being described as -- >> he should be apologizing and start behaving like us here is government with the time they've got left. >> thank you very much for your time this morning. >> thank you very much. >> now let's see what our panel this morning are going to make of what we've heard, both from israel and also just now from west reading. much of what we're discussing today is rather different to what we thought we'd be tackling on the first full day of a labor conference here in liverpool. i'm joined now by the former labor home secretary, jackie smith. the executive editor and the head of podcasting politico and mcilroy, and the former labor adviser and now broadcaster -- and great professionals, they have all got themselves into their seats. amazing speed. can i just start with the news from israel? we know that israel and palestine has always been a divisive issue. and the last time something like this happened, the response from labor was rather muted, let's put it that way, from jeremy kogan. do you think we're going to hear something different from later this week, jackie smith? >> we already have heard something very different from -- in terms of his unequivocal condemnation of what our terrorist attacks as we heard from wes's treating. and his support for israel's right to defend itself. i think that frankly is a world away from what jeremy corbyn would've said. >> is it a signal that we're in different territory? >> we're in very different territory, trevor. it's a sign of how quickly and -- clearly the decision-making was working very well. there were all out on one page. i don't think that's the end of the story, however, because i think, as israel hit back, once it will do with some force, the question will arise, and particularly in labor, and whether it's a disagreement between the left and the center about how far israel should go in response, and that is going to land right in the middle of this conference. and i think that will change the debate and the optics, and that's when the pressure will rise on -- to hold that line. and also, how does it going to do with people disagree with? it >> i will say the leadership seems to be indecisive. how is that going to fly on the floor of the conference? >> look, i think this sort of complexion of the labour party has changed a lot. when you think back to when we were gathering here in liverpool under jeremy corbyn, it was a very different type of conference. our panelists alluded to, the leadership have been so quick off the mark. contrasting jeremy corbyn's tweet yesterday compared with what senior figures like david lin e were sane. do you distance yourself? he said absolutely, this is -- you are right that there will be some people here that will have some sympathy for
